FREEFORM BATTLE
Josh had been paying attention to Shalin Nariya 's actions during the Hearteater raid. While she wasn't detrimental to the raid's success, there were a lot of mistakes he had noticed, particularly before the main boss herself. A lot of things she could have done more efficiently. She also didn't seem to have done her homework as well as Josh did. Had they not met each other at Laguna 's gathering in the Nexus, she could well have not survived with her entire team intact. She had told him about the trials of the Everworld and how bad they could get -- something she didn't want to go through again. He didn't want her to have to take a repeat trip down there like he eventually would for his Dewgong. Going down there for Ares was going to be bad enough.
Sighing, Josh typed up a message for the green-ette, the wildest Pokémon ride on UNOVR servers, inviting her to have a lengthy brawl with him and his team.
DIRECT MESSAGE> After what happened in Hearteater, it's clear that you haven't learned your way around battle much. Meet me in the Arena and bring six of your best Pokémon. I know we're friends, but we gotta get you toughened up.

DIRECT MESSAGE> Got it! Marking you as a destination. Shouldn't be long!
After watching the speed demon and master combatant dance around Hearteater with little trouble, Shalin was ready to learn from him. Clicking open a Poké Ball, the long-winged, white insect leaped outward, no longer under Hearteater's control. He lowered his wings to the ground and lifted Shalin onto one of them, the girl's peripheral disappearing into speed trails. The duo simply ignored obstacles by leaping over them, the graceful alien zipping across the world map to her friend's location.
Nymris tried to impress Josh by giving Shalin a short but powerful buzz, her model's resolution dropping as large, white pixels flew outward from her lower body. "Whee-hee-hee! That felt awesome!" she cried before sliding down from her nonsensical mount, withdrawing him for now. She called upon the two Pokémon she planned on using for the first part of the match: Rumble and Starr. The rock snake and trainer smiled at one another; unbeknownst to the racer, she had the perfect counter to his team.
"I'll be using these two to start with. Glad to help get some of your other team members caught up, too!" she chirped as the first soccer ball dropped from the sky...

Shalin's wild ride looked positively vomit-inducing. Was that what Beta Testers were capable of? Bending even physics itself to suit their whims? It seemed quite powerful for a Basic Class... perhaps the most powerful Basic Class of all. "How in the world do you even survive that? I've been meaning to ask you since the race," the confused young man remarked before lobbing Aslan's and Rime's Poké Balls into the air. "Now just because they're new doesn't mean they'll be holding back," the speed demon warned.
From the moment they emerged, they looked ready to ram and trample the Pokémon before him. "Aslan, Rime, charge!!" The big lion got up to speed, then lunged toward Starr with a mighty TAKE DOWN as the fairy fox pranced toward the rock-type, her cold tails on full blast. She squeezed all moisture out of the air around her, pouncing toward Rumble with the intent to FREEZE DRY him from the tail end first. If Shalin loved using vibration as a means of attack, then putting that tail on ice would surely disable it...

Shalin amiled when she saw Josh's speedy attacks right out of the gate. It was exactly what she was looking for. "Rumble, show him Seta's little present! TRICK ROOM!" the Beta Tester gleefully ordered.
The Onix raised his rattling tail behind him. Suddenly, it drastically slowed to the point where individual vibrations were clearly visible, as though the action were being viewed under a high speed camera. A strange space expanded from the tail, making Aslan and Rime slow to a crawl and greatly upsetting the timing of their hyper-speed attacks. Both had left glancing blows on the girl's Pokémon, the attacks the way they were used drawing all their power from speed. "I'm curious to see how you fight out of your element," Rumble taunted Josh despite frost forming over the part of his body the Ninetales managed to ice off.
Taking advantage of the snail's pace the Pyroar lunged at, Starr closed her eyes, divining FUTURE SIGHT of the match's outcome. While she could not get a direct answer, she forecast that the lion would fall to a psychic bomb from within!

Shalin's quip about "Seta's little present" caught Josh off guard as both of his Pokémon began moving incredibly slowly. Even the lion's basic attacks took an eternity to fire, and under the effects of TRICK ROOM, Rumble slithered fast. The speed-inverting dimension also came with an extremely trippy background that made the racer's head hurt. He was used to rapidly-flashing images from racing at ludicrous speeds, but these backgrounds were anywhere from mesmerizing to downright hypnotic.
Josh closed his eyes to a squint to try to keep an eye on the action while looking at as little of the strange field as he could. He needed to end this quickly... bue he didn't have a good answer to the Onix without sending himself into battle. It was something he really wanted to avoid... but he had little choice. "Aslan, CRUNCH!" Josh ordered, the Pyroar prancing in slow motion toward the meditating Espeon.
Taking advantage of his ESCAPE Core Ability he had purchased on every class, Josh withdrew Rime and took the battlefield himself... on foot. Drawing on his WATER TOME's power, an aquatic film surrounded his hands as he began casting a Mystic Knight's offensive spell. "Drown!" he cried as he thrust his hands toward the rock-type, pointing an AQUALAO torrent toward the Onix in an effort to recover his speed advantage.

The last thing Shalin expected was for Josh to battle on his own. He was just a child, yet he came charging at her with a magical sword capable of not only slashing, but being used as a spell focus. She was expecting fire or electricity, not a torrent of water. "Which one of us is the crazy one now?!" she shouted as her Onix took full advantage of Josh moving through the TRICK ROOM like he was running through a viscous liquid. An array of heat-seeking STEALTH ROCKS formed all around the racer and his squad before the AQUALAO geyser sent Shalin's precious snake packing.
The Pyroar's teeth cut into Starr, the damage they inflicted upon her massive. Even so, she remained strong, shrugging the blow off while maintaining her meditative stance. Shalin herself hurled Prower's Poké Ball in between the two felines, the Floatzel menacingly buzzing his tails to encourage Aslan to back off.

With the Onix gone, the TRICK ROOM he had maintained disappeared, but not before leaving behind a new hazard: a minefield of stones that would attack not only Pokémon that came too near them, but ones that came out of his Poké Balls. Vaulting onto Aslan's saddle, Josh slapped the lion's sides with his greaves. The Pyroar bellowed loudly from the harsh spurring, vigorously bouncing Josh in his seat as he held the Thunder Brand outward, making a passing slash on Prower with his steed belching FLAMETHROWER all over Starr.
No matter the severity of the hit, the moment of Aslan's demise that Starr foresaw came to fruition. A psychic bomb detonated beneath Aslan, sending both lion and rider high into the air. While the height limit prevented Josh from suffering a large amount of fall damage, the combination of the psychic blast and the resulting plunge dealt hundreds of damage to the fire-type, forcing him back into his Poké Ball.
With the Onix down, Josh felt comfortable sending Rime back out. Quickly climbing into the arctic fox's saddle and grabbing her reins, the two prepared themselves for the battle to escalate further.

Shalin knew Josh could be rash from when they had rescued one another from Ostellia's Invasive Species, but that he was willing to go into combat directly was nuts! For a child, he was really good with that sword, too, landing a solid hit on Prower. The Floatzel's eyes widened as his sword's electricity danced across and into the cuts that already looked like they hurt.
Foreseeing her own fiery demise, Starr raised her forked tail toward the sun, bathing Prower in healing sunlight. MORNING SUN that invigorated the Floatzel enough to use his ultimate attack against Ironsmith and rider.
Raising her Z-BRACELET to chest height, she moved her arms and hands in the rough shape of a sine wave, causing water to fly from between the Floatzel's tails. "You want fast, Josh?! You'll get fast! Prower, use your HYDRO VORTEX!" the Beta Tester shouted.
Tails that disappeared from sight completely, the only indicators of their presence being the engine-like noise they made from whirling at a totally invisible pace. The resulting waterspout would threaten to devour Josh and his icy steed in wind and water surely not even he could outrun! On top of that, the waterspout's air cone was so wide that it blew not one, but two soccer balls toward his goal!

There was no escaping the Z-MOVE: HYDRO VORTEX, the camera panning outward to capture the entire waterspout. Josh was thrown from the saddle as his Ninetales desperately writhed to get control inside the torrent of water. It was no use; both of them were trapped within its suction and hurled into the net behind him... along with both of the soccer balls bouncing around the field. Not one, but two loud horns sounded as large banner text appeared toward the end of the cutscene:
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!
A digital wheel spun above center field, its text too fast to read until it began slowing down. Coming to a stop on a yellow wedge with a thundercloud, both he and his Ninetales became subject to electric shocks. While his BOLTER class would normally help him resist such an attack, both he and Rime were positively soaked from the Z-Move, causing the Ninetales to drop and Josh himself to drop to roughly half health.
The PARALYZED boy shivered as the wheel spun again. He could not believe it when it came to a stop on the exact same wedge, a second powerful shock running not only through him, but his Shinx's Poké Ball. Blitz's electric typing made him immune to paralysis, but even being down a quarter of his health was huge.
Barely able to move and breathing heavily after having tumbled out of the net and landing on an arm he could no longer feel, Josh withdrew himself from combat to send out his Shinx and Rockruff. With how fast the water-type was and the paralyzed trainer unable to issue commands promptly, the lion cub took it upon himself to get the job done. With his head lowered, the young one rammed down his twin-tailed foe with a charging SPARK attack.

Not only had she turned the tide of battle with Prower's well-placed Z-Move, but she had scored two quick goals that resulted in effectively removing an additional Pokémon from battle. That Pokémon being Josh himself. "Hearteater toughened me up!" the Beta Tester bragged despite her Floatzel falling to the last-ditch SPARK attack.
She couldn't hold back any longer. With some of her strongest Pokémon out of commission, she had to call on an ace in the hole. As much as she knew Josh would remember Nymris, their strategy had changed quite a bit since their last meeting in the Surge Steppes. Last time, Shalin utilized the Ultra Beast's raw speed. This time, she had more devious plans. "Mop 'em up, both of you!" she cried as she also clicked open Sandy's Poké Ball. The Vibrava's and Pheromosa's wings both roared with such volume that the merged shockwaves threatened to blow even Josh's stout Pokémon off their feet!

The vibrations made Josh flinch, nearly blowing out the sound system attached to his WorldScreen. He could feel them much like one could a cranked car stereo, forcing him to quickly go into his UI and turn down environmental volume several steps. That Pheromosa's wings disappeared from going so fast? And she rode them? Just... how?
He couldn't be distracted by that, though; he had to focus all his efforts on taking the bug-type Ultra Beast down. A spinning kick would inflict colossal, perhaps even lethal, damage upon his Rockruff. Though Nymris was fast, he seemed to be putting all his efforts into rocking the air rather than a fighting-type move. "Hold strong, both of you! Sarulf, ROCK THROW!" That the move didn't fire even after several seconds as the confused-looking Pokémon stood still was a sign that Josh had forgotten a critical step in preparing his team.
He had not equipped the rock-type in a single Class, and he didn't have a single Rock-type move innate.
The shockwave rattled both the cat and dog, cosmetic cracks appearing on the Rockruff and red spots on the Shinx as visual indicators of how much damage they had been dealt. The two ignored the smaller Vibrava, charging Nymris in a cross formation with a standard TACKLE and an electrified one by way of SPARK, Josh crossing his fingers for the Pheromosa's muscles to start seizing from the shock.

Shalin braced herself for impact when she heard the command for a ROCK THROW, only to breathe a huge sigh of relief at a big mistake from the young blonde. Was he not taking this match as seriously as she thought? Rather than get complacent, she had to press her advantage. Josh was arguably the strongest character with an age of under one year on the entire server.
Nymris lifted one leg up and whirled around like a top with it outstretched. Using precise bursts of buzzing, he was able to steer himself toward Sarulf, threatening to TRIPLE KICK the Rockruff itself into the net. The weaker TACKLE barely grazed the Ultra Beast, but the SPARK attack reduced the alien creature's stability. Not enough to prevent the fighting-type attack from firing - if that white whirlwind touched the Rockruff, it was gonna hurt!
Sandy's wings were still roaring loudly, making verbal communication between trainer and Pokémon impossible. Taking off, the Vibrava loudly BUG BUZZED around the lion cub's head, trying to deplete the Shinx's senses one by one.

Though Josh could turn down his volume, his Pokémon could not. With how sensitive predators' hearing had to be, they were particularly vulnerable to sonic attacks. The young Shinx in particular had his acute senses used against him, the shrieking threatening to rupture his eardrum. He fought through it the best he could, only succumbing to crashing into Sarulf, who had been sent flying at great speed from the Pheromosa's nasty TRIPLE KICK.
Down to his final Pokémon, Josh sent Keleth out, refraining from sending himself into battle until the Rapidash had a moment to get him patched up. In the meantime, the support Pokémon still had strong offensive options against the bug-type. His horn glowed a hot pink, lifting the Ultra Beast off the ground with powerful PSYCHIC waves. Time was a luxury he didn't have against a Pokémon so powerful; if he wanted to bring the invasive Pokémon down, it has to be now.
