Hastily dismissing the prompts to train Twilight for riding, Josh rode down an ill-traveled side street in Briarbane's Western District. The Absol's fur was not solid white; black and red spots appeared and disappeared on occasion. It was a visual indicator that she had been Corrupted. It made her more difficult to control, the Pokémon less willing to listen to the boy's commands.
The boy had just barely enough control to make it to the agreed rendezvous point with Alicia Westfield : a secluded, but wide, alleyway between two rows of buildings. It was long enough for the Absol to get up to speed in order for Josh to finish the second half of the quest, yet hidden enough that few people would see the unsightly dark-type.

Alicia sighed softly, having managed to arrive at the meeting point first. It was unsurprising. With her first partner fully evolved, and still bearing future’s lightning, she could get anywhere she needed to in a flash. [tangent=“This is about the blond child, right? What was his name again?”] ”⏁⊑⟟⌇ ⟟⌇ ⏃⏚⍜⎍⏁ ⏁⊑⟒ ⏚⌰⍜⋏⎅ ☊⊑⟟⌰⎅, ⍀⟟☌⊑⏁? ⍙⊑⏃⏁ ⍙⏃⌇ ⊑⟟⌇ ⋏⏃⋔⟒ ⏃☌⏃⟟⋏?”[/tangent] Venex asked. Recently freed from Hearteater’s madness, he was no longer a victim of the bat’s haze. He could travel freely once more. It just so happened that, currently, his choice was to stand by his liberator. [tangent=“His name’s Josh, and he told me his Absol was effected by that storeroom just before we faced Hearteater. Or at least let me in on what you’re talking about.” Tikani insisted, her voice deeper than before with her final evolution. ”The topic in question is pulling up right now.” the pinkette replied to her starter, sliding off the nearly twelve foot tall dinosaur’s back. ”Great to see you… just wish it was for better reasons.””Am… Sorry.” Venex rasped. ”Was… part of… problem…” While the dragon bee had new understanding thanks to the events, he still found actually speaking in English difficult. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3]

Josh still did not understand a word between Alicia and Venex until they started speaking in plain, but broken, English. Perhaps it was a quirk of that new Contact class that Josh had yet to even read the UI description of. From the title alone, it sounded dangerous, and his BYTES were tied up mastering Ironsmith, and eventually Aviator. He already had Storm's growth covered with Bolter, but not Thunder's.
"I noticed some changes in Izoni and Apollo, too," Josh interrupted Alicia as Twilight passed by, refusing to stop at his command. "Come on, Twilight, behave! What's gotten into you?" The two swerved back and forth, narrowly avoiding Venex and Tikani until the game was satisfied enough to close the tutorial and let the boy ride where he wanted... or in this case, wherever she wanted. Shaking his head, he slid down from the back of his Absol and walked alongside her, reuniting with Alicia.
"Yes... about her..." he trailed off, black and red wisps concentrated around the dark-type's horn.

Alicia winced as she watched Twilight fuss and fume. She looked up at Josh with a small smile. ”It’s because we all took Hearteater down. As long as they stayed in Ostellia, the bat didn’t push as hard as she could have. But when they left, it was taken as them trying to flee the Lunala’s zone of influence, so it used its psychic powers to drive them insane until they returned. Grab a rank of Contact if you ever have the chance, they have a lot to say if you’re willing to listen… not that I need it myself. I think something happened when I communed with that Guzzlord late in the events. Something that… made their language start clicking in my head.”Honestly, she should probably be really concerned about that. But she didn’t notice anything bad as a result, per se… Focus, Alicia. The pinkette sighed as she focused on Twilight. This kind of irritability, disobedience, and even out right irrationality was concerning, even on its own. ”Josh… do you remember what I was like at the end of that Midas Corp run…?” Alicia asked softly. The despair and fury had been overwhelming… the Tome’s might a silent promise of power. A power that, sadly, was meaningless in the end given the Ultra Beasts appeared to be completely immune to Corruption and attacks or abilities derived from it. A price paid for nothing of value to be gained… Alicia held a hand out, carefully trying to pet Twilight if she would allow it. ”She got a heavy dose it looks like. It’s basically scrambling her mind…” Alicia mused softly, theorizing. ”I’m not sure what can be done though… just that my own experience is that strong emotion makes it flare up. I assume you’ve tried to take her to a Shrine already?”She thought back to her time in the Maze with Torino. What she’d… done there. It was a bad idea, but it might be worth considering… ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3]

Josh nodded upon hearing Alicia's friendly point of advice. "I would if I could, but my BYTES are tied up for a while," he answered in a regretful tone. "I've got to master Ironsmith to be able to equip another class, then I need to master Aviator for the little ones to grow up. Some thing that makes legendary Pokémon harder to raise. I love Thunder and Storm too much. As much as I'd love to talk to Izoni and Apollo, we're talking 2,200 BYTES for all of that." It was a huge slog -- one that took him months last time he had to come up with that kind of money to be able to change his avatar's age.
The conversation quickly shifted to Twilight, who would attempt to leave a paper cut-like mark on her hand when she attempted to pet her. Whether it was her personality, the Corruption, or a combination of both (she was a Creed Pokémon before this, after all), she was one moody Absol. "I have. It didn't do a thing. I even tried exposing her to radiation from the Crystal of Confidence. It did nothing."
There was clearly some kind of puzzle he had to piece together to stop the Corruption. "In the meantime, it makes her one hell of a combatant. How much research have you done into this... non-elemental typing, for the lack of a better term?"

Alicia decided to not mention that strictly speaking he could hot swap on the fly with the new changes. Not in all situations of course, but in most it was possible. But maybe the mechanics were a bit different on Josh’s end? ”Yeah, I figured. The shrine didn’t help in my case either.” the Pinkette mused. The Absol’s sudden move didn’t go unnoticed. Alicia snatched her hand back like lightning before the blade horn could cut her. ”I haven’t been able to do much. When Tikani saved me from a chunk of the Corruption down there, it seemed to settle purely within her vines.”At the unspoken prompting, the Meganium extended a corrupted vine. The void tether waved in the air at her mental command, looking like a glimpse into another realm’s starless night. ”As much as it freaks me out, I barely expend any energy manipulating these vines now. Like something… other is pouring liquid energy into them as I use them. I could keep up hits with this all day long. And when Alicia used the Ledger back when we were coloring Shalin’s Ponyta in, I felt a surge of some wicked energy propelling me along.”Alicia nodded at that. ”Whatever this corruptive power is deep down, it wants whatever it gets its claws into to survive as long as it can make it. I… hated having to ask her, but since players don’t have Types in the same way Pokemon do normally, I had to have her do the testing. I’d had some thoughts when I realized Tikani wasn’t expending energy when using her vines now.”Tikani picked up again after that. ”Fire, Ice, Sylvene’s winds, Venex’s poisons and stinger… beyond the usual ‘ow’ you’d expect, they didn’t have much effect. The rest of me’s still vulnerable though. We had to know and it wasn’t like there was someone else who could volunteer.””Nothing on how to eradicate it though. I thought of asking Venex since Hearteater used the Beasts to harvest it. But he couldn’t get a grip on the actual energy to pry it free or otherwise try to eat it. Not without hurting Tikani further…” Alicia added, huffing. ”… There’s only one thing I’ve tried that had any amount of success. But I don’t know how deeply interested it is in Twilight…”——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3]

For Josh, losing access to Player attacks was a bigger concern... not to mention how many fire-type and electric-type Pokémon were speed demons. Losing all that damage in Colossal Battles was a huge problem... not to mention the Mechanical Combat tournaments Josh would no doubt need to attend to continue to look good in his guildmaster's eyes.
"So what you're saying is those non-elemental attacks... more accurately, Corruption attacks, don't have a cost to them?" he asked. "That sounds... really broken." His evaluation practices had changed since joining the guild he did, something Alicia may have been able to pick up on. "But I'm not sure it's worth Twilight acting up like this. She was completely loyal to me before, and now she's... really hard to control." Twilight scowled at Josh and Alicia, but treated Tikani like a friend. A comrade in arms, standing next to her and gently bumping into her if she allowed it... like two humans would fist-bump.
Josh continued to listen to Tikani's explanation of how the power worked. "...Yeah, that's busted in half," he reiterated. "I want her to conquer it. But the Corruption is controlling her. Making her into a murder machine that wants to do nothing but fight. I expected her to be that way, coming from the competitive battling guild, but she was amicable until passing through that Corruption chamber in Hearteater's lair. Now, all I can get her to do is battle." As if to prove a point, Josh sat on the Absol's back again, only to get an even more acute reaction: a prompt buck-off that made him groan.
"What... is it?" Josh asked as he struggled to get to his feet.

Alicia sent a look Josh’s way, mentally cringing as she heard the slight changes. That Creed mindset was starting to get into him it looked like, valuing power above all. ”Hey, stay with me. Remember this is a different scenario than what we’re used to.” She chided softly. ”Though you’re right. For those willing to pursue power at any cost, the Corruption does offer incomparable boons…”Tikani glanced at Twilight, and let the Absol bump her. Wrapping a vine around her gently and patting her on the head with the tip. ”She seems to like me.” The Meganium noted. ”… Like Calls To Like…” Alicia mumbled, shaking her head. She went into her menu and rescinded her Contact ranks temporarily, suppressing the class entirely. She closed her eyes tight and shuddered as her own darkness swelled and surged to fill the metaphysical gap left behind. When she next opened her eyes, green orbs swam in black voids rather than the pristine white Josh was used to seeing in a person’s eyes. Tarry veins distended slightly on her arm, pulsing and roiling with Corruption. Showing that she herself was infected, though not as severely as Twilight. Not yet at least. ”I… can try linking the Corruption in me to hers. And… drawing it out of her through that channel.”She left it unsaid that such a move would leave Twilight’s Corruption no where to go but into the aspiring hero. Condensing it within a single soul. What she was offering was to burden herself further in order to relieve Twilight of the wicked power. And who knew what so much Corruption would do to her once she had taken it in. What she had already was… difficult to deal with. But she was willing to try if Josh wanted Twilight to be free of the Corruption badly enough. What would be unmistakable was the fact that Tikani tensed up significantly at the sound of the offer. Her eyes widened and her pupils shrank at the words. ”Alicia… please think of yourself…””I was planning to do the same for you, Tikani. Just give the word.” Alicia persisted, turning her corrupted gaze upon the Meganium in question. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Power, at any cost. It was the Creed's mantra, and it scared him the deeper he got into UNOVR's lore and mechanics. Was the way to advance in the guild really just a numbers game? He didn't want it to be. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. The number Josh wanted to see go up was miles per hour, not damage per second.
Josh looked confused as Twilight seemed more cordial with Tikani than her own trainer. He was more confused, and even terrified, when he saw the ichor seep through her arms, threatening to burst from beneath her skin. It already looked painful before drawing Twilight's and Tikani's Corruption into herself.
He couldn't allow his friend to suffer like this.
"No. Stop," the boy would attempt to halt her. "I know we're both willing to bend over backwards for one another. And I can't permit you to sacrifice yourself for me. We'll find another way." With how many hidden dungeons, crypts, castles, and Instances there were throughout UNOVR, doing enough of them would surely lead to a solution. "If you can get through to Venex and I can get through to Izoni, despite Hearteater's control, then I can get through to Twilight. It'll be like starting from square one. But I'm sure the means are there."
Alicia was about to enter a very dark era, wasn't she...?

As much as she was willing to assist Josh and his Pokemon at any cost, Alicia privately breathed a sigh of relief as Josh interrupted her. She stopped immediately, as he was right. Surely something had to be out there that could cure Twilight in the future. The only question was how much it would warp the Absol in the process of acquiring such an option. How much would she change from what she could have been if she’d never been corrupted? Alicia closed her eyes again, trying to reactivate Contact. It gave her some measure of defense against the corruption within herself. It helped ward away the motes of blackness. But it had trouble existing when that darkness was expressing itself. Josh might be able to make out the crease lines by her eyes as she focused hard. The wicked power slowly receded as she mentally shoved it back into the little ‘barn’ she’d carved out within her core to house it and keep it under control. And the pinkette heaved a sigh of relief, as if dropping a great weight, as she returned to normal. Looking at her first human friend with normal eyes once more. ”I wish you good luck and great fortune in your efforts. And if you need an extra helping hand from a fellow powerhouse, I’m just a message away more-or-less.”It still made her smile at times. Thinking back to how much of an impact she had had on the raid. How she managed to stand shoulder to shoulder with not just her friend who started before her but also veterans like Orion and Laguna and still stand out. How she’d made a difference despite so many being there… ”Helen…” Tikani suddenly began, putting emphasis on Alicia’s IRL name. The pinkette froze and slowly turned to look at her starter. The word ‘How’ was on Alicia’s lips but she couldn’t bring herself to actually utter it. ”He-… len…?” Venex rasped in confusion. He looked around as neither Trainer nor Meganium answered him right away. ”We care about you too.” The Meganium continued, tucking her legs in and reaching her head down to be eye level with her trainer. ”So please… think of us too when you go off on something that’s going to hurt you. I… don’t want to lose you… Like you lost me once.”Alicia gulped softly at that, looking down like the scolded child as she reach one hand across to grasp the opposite arm. ”… I’m… sorry… I just…” The shock of her starter knowing her real name despite her never saying it. The guilt of being shown just how much the saurian felt for her when she went off and put herself on the line. It… left her speechless. As dark as this era she was entering was going to be… perhaps it was reassuring that at least one person almost literally attached to Alicia at the hip was going to try and keep the sun shining bright. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

Being a Contact looked stressful on one's body; after seeing the class in action, Josh was happy to stick with Therian and Ironsmith, as he planned. Therian plans would have to wait, though. He couldn't bear his two Zapdos growing at different rates, and their final stage would be blockaded by mastery of the Aviator class. He already had it unlocked; it was just a matter of securing the funds. He might even need to roll Ironsmith back some... something he really didn't want to do. Barding up his Pokémon made them look even more heroic than they already were.
"Glad to have you as a friend I can depend on, Alicia," Josh answered her, feeling much the same way about the raid. Despite him being wet behind the ears, not yet celebrating a birthday in the game world, he had been a major contributor. He had not one, but two legendary Pokémon at his side.
Hearing Venex and Tikani's namedrop made Josh clam up. Had her Pokémon just doxxed her? How was that even possible? Was there a remnant of Hearteater somewhere within her? It made no sense. Someone as smart as her wouldn't put her real name out there. Josh wasn't so smart in that regard; he was an idealized version of his real world self, name and all.
"Alicia, can I get your ear in some place secluded? Not here, but sometime later. Preferably in a private room. Just with the two of us." To anyone else, that was a flag for a romantic interaction. Alicia knew that Josh was different; he was not interested in romance. What did he want?

If only he knew the truth… Alicia smiled at Josh for his friendly comment. But the apparent doxxing had prevented her from replying. There was only one explanation that made sense to her. Hearteater never got her mental fangs into the Meganium after all. … Perhaps there was the possibility it was still in herself, but Alicia strongly doubted that. ”The Everworld… my trial… that’s where you heard it. I thought when I heard your voice… that I was just imagining it.” Alicia muttered out, still stunned. Tikani’s only response was to nod, confirming Alicia’s suspicions. Seeing as words failed her and the Meganium was unwilling to speak further, the pinkette was left silent for a bit. Mulling Josh’s request over as she stood there. She nodded to him at last, a quiet agreement to his request. Even if it was about how Tikani knew her real name, she imagined he would want further context since the fact reared its head in such an abrupt and undeniable way. Maybe it would give him some context for his own upcoming trial. ——————————————————————— {Party}Tikani (Meganium) [4/5/4] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Fumar (Coalossal) [4/5/4] Pearl (G!Ponyta) [3/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [4/5/4] Shylla (Toedscool) [3/3/3] Josh Devlin

The silence after the Helen namedrop was the most awkward situation he had ever been in with the Gardener. "So it was in the Everworld?" Josh asked. That was concerning. Just what was Hydance doing? How long could this go on before the US government shut the game down over privacy concerns?
The silent nod showed what kind of mental state Alicia, and Helen by proxy, were both in. "I'll send you a DM in a few days so we can get this worked out. I know there's a lot of events coming up, and we'll both be really busy," the rider assured her out of consideration. "I think I have my answers with Twilight now... or all the answers I'll get. I think I just need to spend some time with her... and some time figuring out what's Corrupting her." With that, the boy gently scratched beneath Twilight's chin to placate her before saddling up and turning around. "And if you want to talk about it in a place where Hydance can't snoop around, my meatspace DMs are open, too."
