Music: A Land Bringing About Life
Josh had made it out of Hearteater alive, but at what cost? His strongest Pokémon was in Seta's clutches. All the resources he had put into Ares, gone. With Sarah Lee behind enemy lines, he was one of UNOVR's stronger forces, alongside Alicia Westfield and some of the other greats that had been around since Beta. Strong in terms of raw power, but lacking the knowledge that veterans had.
It was that lack of knowledge that led to the Charizard's demise. A similar lack of knowledge, and a pang of stubbornness that he shared with ARAVAN ESCHER, that had caused his rival's Nihilego to meet a similar fate. Both were PHANTOMS that wandered the Everworld indefinitely.
Even the stern oceanographer had been reduced to tears walking through Seta's red-and-gold halls. Josh put a hand on his friendly rival's shoulder as they slowly walked to the chamber's end, Thunder and Storm chirping in the boy's other arm. He squinted as the Galarian Zapdos' talon nearly pierced his skin. "Remember? I promised you that we would come here together and get our Pokémon back. I just wasn't expecting it would be Ares. Ulysses is on death's door right now, with ten maximum hit points. But it's Ares that needs my help now." With a heavy head and arm, he lifted it off Aravan's shoulder and relaxed; his height made him barely able to reach the taller man in the first place. "And remember, if only one of us can get our Pokémon back, it's you. You get priority. It's only fair because it was my Pokémon that--"
"No," the aquatic specialist interrupted him. "We're both getting out of here with our Pokémon. Both of us or neither of us. I haven't forgotten. I've seen you climbing the PVP ladder, too. Once we get our Pokémon back, you owe me a rematch."
"You'll get one," Josh answered. "But not until Ares and Enigma are both in our hands, rather than Phantoms wandering this place. We're doing this. Together."
Reaching the end of the hall where the amorphous Gatekeeper Seta watched over visitors, Josh approached them first. "Keeper of the Everworld, we come to you to request the spirits of Ares and Nihilego back. Ares lost his life inside Hearteater trying to save Kyukon , and wound up being able to save neither of us. Only Ruby made it out alive. When I came to back at the Shrine, he was... gone. Ares' life was taken through no fault of his own. He means... so much to me. I've known him longer than any other Pokémon. I owe a lot of my success to him. We may have just... got in over our heads in there." If Hearteater had a level recommendation associated with it, it felt way above his. With Sarah Lee pulling so much weight in combat, would the boy ever enter another raid or dungeon at anything less than a maxed tree?
He stepped forward to plead his case for Aravan's Pokémon, as well. "My friend and rival's Nihilego, Enigma, has also--"
Aravan raised his hand to Josh's mouth, hushing him. "I can tell them myself what happened," he said as he clicked open the Poké Ball containing his juvenile, half-size Kyogre, who greeted the Zapdos chicks with a crooked smile. "The two of us were trying to get stronger by battling one another on the shores of Ostellia. We didn't realize the lethality of combat there, and I pushed Enigma, my Nihilego, beyond his limits. Since then, Josh has realized how to restrain himself in combat, so that this does not happen again." Finding out about the dedicated PVP mode that kept Pokémon from being reduced below one hit point helped, too. "Just when we were understanding one another, this series of unfortunate events took him from me. I'd like to give her a second chance." The swimmer's KYOGRE silently floated behind him out of respect for Seta.
The boy scout took a step forward. "Please... let us see our Pokémon..." he begged of the Everworld's gatekeeper.

Seta stands before Josh Devlin and his Rival, gold mask betraying no emotion.
"Your words hold sincerity, but show a lack of understanding for what the Everworld is," Seta says. "This place is a refuge for souls that have fallen through the fault of those they trusted. It is not a punishment for the Pokemon, but a trial for those who put them in danger."
Seta's words ring through the vermilion halls, and they make no move to guide you deeper into the Everworld.
"It is not a second chance for your Pokemon," Seta says with a voice like Autumn wind, "it is a second chance for you."
"I ask once more: What makes you think your ghost wishes to return after what happened?"

Music: A Land Bringing About Life
Seta's words struck Aravan like a vicious lightning bolt and Josh like an earthen spire. An earthen spire that rung as loudly as Alicia Westfield 's words on the high seas of Ostellia's Drowned Harbor:
Those scathing words were exactly what came to be.
The boy broke down in tears, his Charizard in his eyes lost forever. All he saw was despair. And he would have to repeat this with his Dewgong. If he couldn't free the Pokémon he was closer to, then there was no hope for freeing Ulysses. "So you're saying that Ares... never truly liked me? And Ulysses, too? That they never want to see me again?" the emotionally charged boy cried, barely understandable through sniffing and moaning. Those emotions brought down the hearts of Thunder and Storm, weeping with him.
Aravan pondered Seta's words, too. All this time, he had blamed Josh for his Nihilego's passing. His eyes opened wide, a cutscene playing before him in black and white:
The fault wasn't with Josh for delivering the killing blow. The fault was his own. He could have accepted Josh's draw offer. He was the one that let the battle escalate to the lethal stakes that it did. He had the opportunity to stop it. And stop it he did not. The fault rested not with Josh, despite the insistence that he was the reason the Nihilego's spirit wandered the hellish realm's halls.
It rested with Aravan for not respecting Enigma's limits.
Aravan stood behind Josh, wound up, and slapped him on the cheek with all his might -- hard enough that it would have knocked a tooth loose were the Bolter's pain thresholds set to Realistic. "You oaf!" the aquatic specialist barked, even Poseidon scowling at him in anger. "That's not what the gatekeeper said or even implied at all. Pardon my French, but why the fuck do you always interpret others' remarks negatively? Why do you always self-deprecate? Why do you always take responsibility for things that aren't your fault?! Because you think it will make everyone around you happy?!"
Josh clammed up, curling into a ball of regret. Seta had already trapped him atop an earthen spire of misunderstanding. Now, his competitive yet wise Rival had stabbed him on a skewer of intense guilt, rotating and charring him above Ares' tail flame. Not a word escaped from his lips. Not a word that came to Josh's mind could, in his mind, move Seta from their blockade of Ares' ghost.
"Josh, grow the fuck up," Aravan scowled. "You may have the body of an eleven-year-old, but I saw you before you took on that body. You have a bright mind. Stop letting your emotions get in the way and use it. Think. Think about what you could have -- no, should have -- done differently for him."
A loud crackle of thunder echoed around Josh, exposed to a black-and-white cutscene of his own, depicting both the moment where he last saw Ares alive, flying Kyukon to what he believed was safety, as well as the moments just before he himself Whited Out inside Hearteater. During those last moments, images of Mistra's Corrupted landscape and Ulysses overlaid themselves over one another. Despite the haziness, he was able to see the critical mistake he made:
He had attempted to alter the fate of one who had already made up their mind. If he didn't take care of himself, too, he wouldn't be around to save anyone else.
While Josh continued to be lost in his tumultuous inner self, Aravan cleared his throat and answered Seta's question. "Pardon my partner's... indecision. If you didn't overhear what we said, I'll repeat myself. Josh here gave me a chance to call our battle off. And I didn't. My desire to one-up him was so strong that I failed to consider Enigma's condition and whether it was healthy to continue. I want to ask for their forgiveness... and swear to them that I will battle with more restraint. While we can't talk to one another... I'm sure they feel that way inside. That they listened to me despite the danger shows how much they feel a link with me. And not just a one-way link -- a two-way link."
The words "more restraint" echoed within Josh's mind, pushing him completely through the metaphorical skewer and to the other side. Though his midsection felt like it was on fire, he also felt like an enormous burden had been lifted from his shoulders. He shook his head and slowly rose to his feet, cuddling Thunder and Storm as tightly as he could -- up to where the flying-type babies felt comfortable.
"...You're right," Josh sighed before tilting his flushed head toward the Gatekeeper. "Ares' life was taken through no fault of his own; it was my lack of judgment that led to his grisly end. Seta... please let me see him. I want him to know that I'm so sorry for not listening to him. That he yelled at me so loudly before he flew to his end showed how much he cared about me. To help me reconsider. That he would obey such orders showed how much he loved me. And he paid the ultimate price for that misplaced trust. I'm sure I can speak for us both when I say we want to repair that broken bridge."

Seta nods slowly. "The first step to atonement is knowledge of your mistake," Seta says. "I will show you to your Pokemon, but I have no power to make them listen or forgive."
Seta moves down the hall beside Josh Devlin and his Rival, leading them to a door-shaped hole in the wall. Not a door, because that would require a barrier of some sort. Wood, a hinge. This is more like a taut black curtain strung up in a rectangular piece. The entrance is flanked by statues wearing golden masks of Charizard and Nihilego.
"Whether or not you have a second chance will become clear in time."
You pass through the darkness. It's as brief as blinking, and you find yourself in a new world.

Indeed, Seta was powerless to guarantee that he would be able to get his Pokémon back. Ultimately, it was up to Josh and Aravan to prove themselves to their Charizard and Nihilego. As the two stepped through the curtain of darkness, they heard sounds of their Pokémon bonking against something solid. By the time they could turn around, it was too late. They had already loaded into a new zone in the Everworld. A zone that constantly ticked with the sound of a timepiece's pendulum crossing a switch.
"Where are my Pokémon?" Josh asked, only to hear an error noise when attempting to pull up his Pokémon menu. A red UI message accompanied the sound effect:
Error> You cannot access the Menu at this time.
"I can't, either," Aravan replied, much more calmly. For having a legendary Pokémon in his possession, now stripped from him, he was incredibly professional. Far more so than his Rival. He turned around to see the other side of the loading zone he entered from, only to see a giant pendulum blocking it. "And it doesn't look like we can go back easily."
Before either could say any more, the camera panned down several flights of stairs, giant gears lining the walls and ceilings, turning like clockwork. An ominous title displayed across the center of their UIs:
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 1F "Any idea what that name means?" Josh asked. "Looks like Latin. I've played enough JRPGs to vaguely recognize the language. Memory to... I have no idea."
"Neither do I," the water specialist answered. "And we're not getting any farther by speculating. Let's go downstairs."
Before they could get much farther, flashes of red and blue light stopped them, much like a police car's lights prompting a driver to pull over. The two lost control of their bodies, stopped by another cutscene consisting primarily of text:
Once the two were done reading the text, unable to mash through it as it materialized at a fixed rate, the two regained control. "Alicia Westfield wasn't kidding when she said Seta's Trial was no joke. All we have to defend ourselves are our basic Player attacks. It almost feels like we're starting from scratch."
"Josh, this doesn't feel like a trial by combat to me," Aravan chided him. "This is about finding our Pokémon and making right for the wrongs we've done. Both to our own Pokémon, and to each others'." Ever the wise man, he was. He may not have been as strong as Josh was, but he had pearls the child could not wrap his head around until they were spelled out to him.
"Right. Now, let's head in." Leading the way down the next flight of stairs, the boy rubbed his eyes when he saw Ares standing on the other side of what appeared to be a wall composed of spinning gears. As the duo approached, a black and white video of their first battle played before them, its footage blurry. It was Ares as a Charmander battling against Aravan's Blitzle, a Pokémon his Rival had not only evolved into a Zebstrika, but had Type Modded into a Water-type recently. He watched Wolf carry him through the two-on-two with a high-level Type: Null, the small Fire-type collapsing from a series of Quick Attacks.
At the end of the cutscene, the Charizard spoke to him from beyond the gear-composed wall, the echo effect on his words making him somewhat challenging to understand:
"Josh, I fell in battle that day under your guidance and your trust. With the knowledge you have now, what could you have done to prevent this needless White Out from occurring?"
Within a few seconds, the dragon's trainer had his answer and delivered it with confidence. "Not immediately jumping into a battle against Aravan," he answered. "There are a ton of wild Pokémon in the tutorial area ideal for letting new players get used to the battle system."
The ocenographer broke his frown. "That's exactly why I tried to keep you off Route 8 that day," Aravan added after refreshing his memory watching Josh's flashback. "You weren't ready for it then. Obviously you're more than ready for it now, what with being one of the fastest-rising trainers out there. I didn't want to have to battle you to prove my point, but that's what it came down to."
"So what you're saying is I bit off more than I could chew, huh?"
"Exactly. Josh, learn to know your limits. Your capabilities. What you are comfortable doing. Don't be afraid to push that boundary, but don't be reckless. Size your opponents up, and don't be afraid to run away. You're the fastest Pokémon rider around. There's nothing you can't get away from. No encounter inescapable. Just remember that it's an option."
Holding his head down, Josh took another somber step toward the gear-wrought wall. "Did you hear all of that, Ares?" With a silent nod, the pseudo-dragon Pokémon disappeared into an orange and white glitter, the latter color expanding toward Josh. A UI message would inform him of his progress.
The gear blocking their way continued to turn. Opening his Equip menu, Josh saw that his Heat Blade and Thunder Buster were completely greyed out. "So types being sealed also disables elemental weapons..." he moaned, reduced to a single weapon he could use: the most basic Broadsword. The first weapon many Ironsmiths crafted. "This is as good as it's gonna get, isn't it?" The boy slashed at the brown and white gear, cleaving off one of its teeth. With a loud screech, the gear came to a halt... and despawned.
On the other side of the entryway was an enormous hall with seven passageways. The central one was covered with six gears: red, lavendar, hot pink, brown, and two different shades of purple. Those six gears covered the only entryway to a tower that stretched beyond what the area's draw distance would let them clearly see. The other six, scattered about the chamber like numbers on a clock, appeared to be gated by standard doors. Checking his map, Josh saw how tall the central tower stretched. "Dang, buddy. We've got out work cut out for us."

Drawing his basic Broadsword, it felt strange to Josh that he was wielding the most basic one-handed weapon an Ironsmith could use. He was almost better off using an unarmed attack, what with the reflective blade only raising his attack power by a few points. He tested the weapon against all six colored gears with a basic strike; none of them budged, turning rapidly and nearly flinging the blade out of his hand. "We need to take a look around and start piecing this place together, Aravan," Josh suggested. "Let's split up. You take the west side and I'll take the east."
"No," Aravan rebuked him. "Seta had us pass through the Everworld together. We have to stay together, solve these puzzles together, and meet with our Pokémon together." Josh shook his head; did his RIVAL have to reiterate the teamwork aspect of the Trial that much?
"Okay, but we still need to explore systematically." Opening the southwestmost door, a film of water was on the other side of it. As soon as he crossed to the other side of the film, an orange UI message reinforced his sudden inability to breathe:
Warning> You can't breathe underwater as you are currently equipped. If you start choking, equip yourself with the SWIMMER class or an item that lets you breathe underwater.
A timer appeared on the screen, showing him exactly how much oxygen he had left before he would presumably suffocate and white out. But he was already in the Everworld. What would happen if he were to white out in the middle of a Trial? Would the Trial reset? Would it be a failure, and he would have to come back later to request a new one? He didn't want to find out. He poked his head inside long enough to see that it was a much less spacious version of the Doortals... and a space that was quite different from the part of the Doortals he explored. The Dancing Dragon Dungeon and the door to Deep Mistra were nowhere in sight. Pushing the door open, Josh inhaled deeply as soon as he stood in the clockwork tower. "That... might be one you'll have to explore on your own," Josh shrugged. "Either that, or I'll have to go into the shop and buy Swimmer just for this Trial."
"I think you're better off doing the latter," Aravan deadpanned as they moved clockwise toward the next door. "Remember, Seta admitted us here together. We won't get far on our own." As soon as he twisted the gear-shaped doorknob and cracked the door open, their entire surroundings began to waver like a desert mirage. Aravan's body began to sweat profusely as another orange UI warning dropped from the top of the screen:
Warning> Your environment is unbearably hot. If you remain here too long, you will white out. If you need more time, equip yourself with the KINDLER class or an item that grants you heat resistance.
"Close that door, Josh!" Aravan coughed. "I... can't... breathe!" Without a word, he stepped through and closed it, barely feeling the heat radiating from its metallic knob. The place looked like Beta Island's volcano, the concrete and metallic floor giving way to what looked like a volcanic cavern. The only unnatural part of it appeared to be a gear-powered, maze-like platform. As soon as Josh took a step on it, it began to sink very slowly. He stepped off it and back onto solid ground.
Returning to Aravan's side and closing the door so he could breathe again, Josh asked him, "That was Beta Island's Brimstone Crater. Why would that show up here, though? Do you have some kind of connection to it?"
"Yes," the musician turned ocean expert answered, "but let's stay focused and figure out what's ahead of us first. Figure out what's on our plate, then make a plan."
"I suppose..." Josh trailed off before making his way to the north. Using his BROADSWORD, he sliced at the white gear inside the door frame, throwing it into motion and causing it to recede into the ceiling. Beyond was a long hallway with décor similar to the main hall they had come from. In the floor's center, there was a red gear covering a hole, the device spinning and radiating a lot of heat. While it was not so hot that their environment wavered, it was uncomfortable for his RIVAL.
On the right side, beyond an unbreakable glass wall, were a pair of strange masks sitting on the end of a conveyor belt. One was of a Charizard, and the other a Nihilego. The conveyor belt went beyond the current room, though with the door in front of them barred and shuttered, he could not progress. "Strange. What in the world is this place? And why are these masks here?" Josh asked.
"Couldn't tell you," Aravan snappily answered. "We can't dwell on it now. Let's head back."
The two headed to the next door on their clockwise path, only to find it under lock and key. "You're kidding me. We gotta find keys, too?" Josh moaned.
"Apparently," Aravan answered, doing his best to keep a positive attitude. "I'm sure if we're thorough, they won't be too hard to find. Haven't you been in a bunch of dungeons with similar mechanics?"
"I have. Four of them. Gnarled Root, Wing Dungeon, Moonlit Grotto, and Dancing Dragon. If these are like this, there should be a Compass somewhere that helps us find these keys. Until we have one, we can't do much about the lock. Anyway, moving on."
Continuing clockwise, beyond another Normal-type gear was a small section of the Fungal Fields of Briarbane, some out-of-place gears along its fences. Both immediately recognized its significance. "Josh, I think I know what this place's significance is. Memoria ad Stultitiam is also the Trial of Time, correct?" Aravan half-rhetorically asked.
"Correct," Josh answered.
"Everything the Trial has shown us has been from our past. I think that if we're going to see our Pokémon again, we'll need to reckon with our past. Learn from it. Show Ares and Enigma we won't repeat the same mistakes. A partner who makes a million mistakes has a far greater mind than a partner who makes the same mistake twice."
Aravan's wisdom left Josh in silence. Out of all the things he expected his RIVAL to be, a fatherly figure was not one of them. Why was he so much smarter than Josh was? What was Aravan's age? How had he experienced so much? Was Aravan secretly a PC? He had far too many questions as he pondered the meaning of every location he had seen so far...

Seeing the three Normal-type gears along the fence, Josh drew his sword and struck the nearest one of them with great force. It twirled with an appropriate amount of speed. Repeating the same process for the other two, he heard a rope snap near a familiar gate -- one leading back into what appeared to be Briarbane proper. "Hmm, I wonder if there's an order," Josh suggested as the sound of a dummy buzzer played and the puzzle reset, rope and all. He repeated the process for the other five possible combinations, attempting to brute-force the solution. All six led to similar outcomes, but not with the same rope breaking each time. "So it's not the order. What is it, then?"
"Think about what the Trial is trying to teach you," Aravan suggested. "And what it's trying to teach me. It wouldn't be a trial for us both unless we were both learning something."
"It's got to be trying to teach us something about our battle here." As if on cue, the beginning of their third match played before their eyes in black-and-white. A particular line echoed loudly, one that he repeated aloud. "While speed is a powerful tool, it is only one tool in your toolbox."
Aravan's stern facial expression rapidly turned into a beaming smile. "That's a good start. Now think on how that could be applied to this Trial's puzzle. What are you trying to accomplish here?"
Josh went into the tank to consider how his friend and RIVAL's wise words could apply here. It took him several minutes, but he came up with something. "I've got an idea. Stand back." With that, he struck each gear with a different amount of force, getting all three to spin in sync with one another. All three ropes they were connected to lifted the gate in sync, letting them pass through to Briarbane proper.
Beyond the wall was another gear-covered chamber, Ares' claws and arms seemingly phasing in and out among them as they shifted about. Though Josh was a little better at understanding the Charizard's echoing words, they were still difficult for him to understand:
"Josh, I fell in battle that day under your guidance and your trust. With the knowledge you have now, what could you have done to prevent this outcome from happening?"
Josh rolled his eyes at his past self. He had watched how Kyukon Whited Out during the Hearteater raid. Twice. He remembered how he, too, had Whited Out once in there. That second time, it easily could have been him. Taking out a foe before it was able to complete a charged attack was one way to deal with it, but it came at great risk and was not the only way. "Remembering the Dodge and Guard Core Abilities exist," he admitted.
With no response from Ares, the Charizard faded behind the wall of gears as it shifted, revealing an entrance to a small room with a red-and-blue glyph covering it. "You're on the right track," Aravan replied with a slow nod. "But it's going to take a lot more than a basic understanding of combat to earn your Charizard's trust back."
"...Let's go," Josh replied in a monotone voice. To others, it may have seemed like he was blowing his RIVAL off. From the child's body language, though, the aquatic specialist perceived his genuine understanding of both his own will and his lost Pokémon's will.
As the two stepped on the glyph, their vision turned to white other than a single intrusive pop-up in the center of their vision:
"That gives us a couple options," Josh mused as the two found themselves back in the clockwork tower's central hub.

With the powers of FIRE and WATER restored, Josh and Aravan could now cast some spells. More importantly, the HEAT BLADE in the child's inventory was no longer greyed out. He immediately equipped it, embers drifting from its red-hot blade after he drew it. "Before we get too much farther, let's take a look at that mess of gears blocking the central tower," Josh suggested.
With a silent nod and hands dripping water bubbles, Aravan joined him. They both tried hitting each of the colored gears; Josh with his burning weapon, and Aravan with casts of AQUA to conserve the resource powering his Player skills. The only attack that had any effect was the fire attack. The gear's pace accelerated until it caught fire, causing it to burn away. Seconds later, the two would hear a loud crash from behind the wall of gears, a single panel receding into the ground and revealing a staircase that disappeared into a blue zone line.
"I see how it works now," Josh surmised aloud. "So each of the gears corresponds to a different element. To get up the tower, we'll need to unlock the elements corresponding to the other five colored gears."
"Perceptive of you," Aravan answered. "And if that first passage we went through that took us to Briarbane seta a trend, each of the gears in the hall's perimeter is blocking the way to a short Trial. A Trial within a Trial." One that challenged them not to change the past, but learn from the past. Learn from the mistakes that got their Pokémon "killed" in the first place. While death existed in UNOVR, it wasn't as final as it was in meatspace. If the bond between loved ones was strong enough, Seta's Trial could enable that bond to overcome the game's version of death.
As the two circled the room to determine which way they would go next, the oceanographer raised a question. "Josh, do you still have your Swimmer class equipped? With Water unlocked, diving into that submerged room will be easy."
"I don't, but I can fix that real quick," Josh replied before pulling up the menu and highlighting the Shop. As he clicked on the icon, a two-note buzzer played as a red error message popped up in the center of his UI:
Error> You cannot access the Shop at this time.
With a pensive face, the young one huffed, "Guess not."
"This means we're going to have to, for better or worse, brave the elements," Aravan replied, his face turning pensive equally so. "My Swimmer class lets me hold my breath longer than most people, but I can't swim in air that hot without the Kindler class equipped... which I haven't put a single BYTE into."
"Then take a deep breath, and let's go."
Aravan inhaled as much as he comfortably could before Josh swung the door open, their environment again wavering back and forth with the effects of a heat mirage. As the temperature warning faded from their UIs, a timer appeared, showing how long they had to complete the room's puzzle. Stepping on the maze-like platform, he let it sink as much as he could before climbing onto the solid mortars bordering it, letting him study the path as it slowly rose back into place. He grabbed Aravan's sweaty arm and took him outside the room before closing the door again, the oceanographer breathing heavily.
"How you holding up?" Josh asked his RIVAL.
"It's like an oven in there!" the elder of the two replied. "Can't you just go in there alone?"
"I wish, but there are two blue switches in there. We need to both stand on them at the same time to open the door on the far end. Thankfully, I know the way through the maze now. Just follow me the best you can, and don't pass out on me, okay? I don't want to have to rescue you from the Everworld next."
"...Alright," Aravan conceded. "And you better be willing to do the same for me when we go swimming. Well, I'll be doing the swimming; you won't be able to even tread water in that armor of yours." As much of a jeer as it was, it hurt. He was right; without the Swimmer class equipped, the effects of his Ironsmith class would cause him to sink in water. Normally, he could saddle up a water Pokémon, but without access to his other Pokémon, he was on his own.
Without further hesitation, the two headed back through the sinking maze, Josh guiding Aravan through it at the fastest pace the struggling RIVAL could reach while keeping his breath held. The mesh at the platform's bottom began to heat up the closer it got to the lava, making the aquatic specialist wince with every step. Once they were across, Aravan stumbled onto his switch, his body shaking from overheating. Josh stepped onto the other one to open the iron bars blocking the door. Not a moment sooner did he grab Aravan and drag him through the door. Once he closed it behind them both, the blue-haired man exhaled, looking as dehydrated as he'd ever seen a Swimmer.
This room was very similar to the last one past the previous mini-Trial, a wall of colored gears with Ares the Charizard trapped behind it. Another part of his body, his tail, was filled in on top of the previous ones; the rest were translucent. "Ares!" Josh cried, reaching for his Charizard. As he did, a black-and-white cutscene played: one of a giant Hydrapple's seven syrpents pointing a unified FICKLE BEAM toward a Charmeleon in front of the eyes of both himself and Altair . Even with his mightiest FLAMETHROWER, he could not overpower the boss Pokémon's sevenfold might.
Aravan looked confused the entire time. He had heard several stories about Ares before, but nothing like this. Just what dungeons had Josh found himself in, and why hadn't they started exploring them together? They had worked with one another well so far in Seta's Trial. Why not elsewhere in UNOVR?
As the cutscene of the Charmeleon fainting faded to white, the dragon's voice boomed in Josh's and Aravan's ears for the third time.
"Josh, I fell in battle that day under your guidance and your trust. With the knowledge you have now, what could you have done to prevent this outcome from happening?"
Josh stood in front of his Pokémon's spirit, dumbfounded. He had seen Alicia Westfield 's Hydrapple before, but never using an attack like that. What could he have done?

Josh pondered the scenario that caused his Charmeleon's collapse alongside the Aviator's Pokémon, remembering how fiercely the two fought against the Hydrapple's seven-pronged breath weapons. Even with Alicia's Hydrapple to learn from, there was still too much he didn't know about the unfamiliar species. Clearing his throat, he addressed his Charizard.
"Nothing," he answered. Not with dejection, but with confidence.
Aravan stood next to the blonde, mouth agape. He had no words for Josh, neither for his response nor how he delivered it. And yet, the Charizard did nothing but smile, the rest of Ares' body except for his head becoming opaque.
"But that doesn't mean there's nothing that can't be learned from this. There is clearly a knowledge gap in my understanding of Pokémon. A knowledge gap that cab be fixed via more exposure. Laddering in PVP. Questing more. Even heading down to the guildhall to read and study more."
As the duo approached Ares, he faded behind the wall of gears, which changed colors to yellow and lavender. A pop-up would give them a clue how to interact with the gears:
"It seems that for every moment Seta's Trial challenges us with our past and overcome it, some of our powers are restored," Josh deduced, going into the menu and equipping his Thunder Brand. Slashing toward the yellow gear, it spun fast enough to grind its axle away, rolling into the opposite wall with a loud thud.
"Indeed," his wise RIVAL answered, taking advantage of his FLYING TOME to likewise decouple the other large gear with a casting of ZANDYNE. The blonde flinched when he saw the size of the twister, backing away when he felt it sucking him in even from a distance.
"Holy... that's powerful," Josh gasped. "Guess I need to pay up and upgrade my Player rarity if I want to keep up with you when we get out of here!"
"...Let's work on that 'getting out of here' part first," Aravan lightly jabbed at the kid before the two stepped through the door frame and onto a dais. Stepping onto it, their vision again faded to white, warping them back to the clockwork world's main hall.
"Time to make good on my promise," Josh reiterated as he led the way to the flooded room, opening the door for his friend and RIVAL. "After you. I don't want to slow you down." The two dove in, one after another. This time, there was no warning about the lack of breathable air; instead, a red timer counter down in the top left corner. To complicate matters further, once the two had sunken below a specific depth, a vortex swept them away. While it did not drag them toward its center, it did shove them around faster than either one of them could swim.
The timer began to produce a beeping noise when Josh was reduced to one minute of oxygen. He pointed to a series of chains attached to a metal plate. Grabbing onto one of them, the scout pointed toward another frantically as his timer wound down. The Swimmer, more adept than Josh was at traveling through water, got hold of another chain more easily. The two let the current carry them away. As soon as they made another lap around the large, flooded room, a plate the chains were attached to moved, the water draining through a fine grate at the bottom. Seeing the water drain, Josh let go of the chain and surfaced as quickly as his legs would carry him. He deeply inhaled, never happier to breathe stale air in his life.
As the water emptied out, a wooden treasure chest floated on top of the falling surface. It took quite a bit of time for the water to drain completely. For a speedster, Josh sure was patient, content to wait for the murky liquid to slowly drain. Once it had finished going down the grate, he opened the chest with a loud creak. While it was not a treasure he was looking for, the chest's contents would prove to be valuable: the DUNGEON MAP.
Information> You got the DUNGEON MAP! View it on the Map Subscreen. Areas you have explored will be blue. Your current location is the purple room. Move the cursor up and down to select a floor to view.
"Bet you can't wait to equip your Swimmer class again once this is over, huh?" the water specialist teased, to which he would receive only a side-eye.
"Let's just keep going." Even after Aravan apologized for being insensitive, he would not get a response from Josh; only the sound of a squeaky, metallic door opening at the bottom of the formerly-flooded chamber. It was then he realized there was no turning back. Whatever memory it threw at him, he had to come to grips with in a way that would satisfy Ares. On the other side of the door, though, it was not Ares trapped in the gears.
It was Enigma.
Another black-and-white scene would play, this one of Aravan battling a Corrupted monstrosity much like the Lord of the Flies that Josh had run into. Their environment looked positively disgusting, resembling a living sea creature's innards. Their foe looked nothing like a Pokémon; instead, looked like a warped piece of flesh that armored itself with Tentacruel linked to the main body via strong electrical currents. The foe was well-matched against Aravan's water-type Pokémon, knocking them down with ease. All except Enigma. The Ultra Beast fought valiantly, but ultimately fell, resulting in a GAME OVER for past Aravan.
Once the cutscene was over, a translucent Nihilego materialized behind a wall of gears of colors neither Josh nor Aravan had seen yet. Enigma spoke to the two of them in a language Josh could not understand.

Josh wanted to say something to Aravan, but he didn't. He wanted to talk about his own encounters with a Corrupted being. The one that got his Dewgong in a similar position as Ares. He would be back for the Dewgong later. But now. He needed to focus on retrieving his Pokémon from Seta's clutches, one at a time. There was little he could do; this was not just his trial, but his RIVAL's, as well. Aravan needed to answer to his own past, just like Josh did his.
Aravan spent a long time in the tank. He wasn't sure how he could have handled that boss differently. His Pokémon were spent. All he had left was Enigma to take on the electric, translucent monstrosity. Genuinely stumped, he came up with the most plausible alibi he could, weak as it was.
[tangent=""In battle itself, nothing. But with the resource management skills I have now, I could easily have more resources remaining, so that Enigma wouldn't have to fight on his own."]"⟟⋏ ⏚⏃⏁⏁⌰⟒ ⟟⏁⌇⟒⌰⎎, ⋏⍜⏁⊑⟟⋏☌. ⏚⎍⏁ ⍙⟟⏁⊑ ⏁⊑⟒ ⍀⟒⌇⍜⎍⍀☊⟒ ⋔⏃⋏⏃☌⟒⋔⟒⋏⏁ ⌇☍⟟⌰⌰⌇ ⟟ ⊑⏃⎐⟒ ⋏⍜⍙, ⟟ ☊⍜⎍⌰⎅ ⟒⏃⌇⟟⌰⊬ ⊑⏃⎐⟒ ⋔⍜⍀⟒ ⍀⟒⌇⍜⎍⍀☊⟒⌇ ⍀⟒⋔⏃⟟⋏⟟⋏☌, ⌇⍜ ⏁⊑⏃⏁ ⟒⋏⟟☌⋔⏃ ⍙⍜⎍⌰⎅⋏'⏁ ⊑⏃⎐⟒ ⏁⍜ ⎎⟟☌⊑⏁ ⍜⋏ ⊑⟟⌇ ⍜⍙⋏."[/tangent]
Josh was dumbfounded as Aravan spoke in Hearteater's language. Did he have to learn this language if he wanted to truly communicate with Izoni, his own Ultra Beast? He had heard this language from Alicia Westfield before. Maybe she could give him some lessons on how to at least translate it.
Without another word from Enigma, the rock-type faded behind some purple and tan gears as his tentacles appeared to become solid. More of their sealed abilities making themselves available was the only sign Josh got that Aravan's acknowledgment, whatever it was, was sufficient for Enigma to believe.
In addition to the normal gears covering the path to the dais, this room had an additional set of gears in the far corner. With a cast of POISMA from the oceanographer, the purple cogs receded into the floor, revealing a large treasure chest hidden behind them. He creaked it open, raising its contents above his head excitedly.
Information> You obtained the COMPASS! Now you can see the locations of many things hidden within the dungeon! This COMPASS has a new feature - a tone will play when a key is hidden nearby!
Seconds after Josh's map lit up with new icons, including a skull icon at the very top of the dungeon, he turned toward his RIVAL and applauded with genuine appreciation. "Great find, buddy! This will help us out a lot in searching for that missing key." With a nod, Aravan followed Josh back toward the dais. Once the two stood on it together, they found themselves teleported back to the Trial's central hall.
"One more to go..." Josh trailed off as he led the way to the southeastern section of the first floor.
"Not quite," Aravan corrected. "We still have to see what's beyond that locked door to the north, once we find the key."
"...Right..." Josh slowly acknowledged, having forgotten about the locked door to the north from among the myriad of other details he was expected to keep track of. Their questions would be answered as soon as they stepped through the door to the final wing of the bottom floor.
The COMPASS's audio signal played as they set foot on what appeared to be a giant chessboard. When he checked his map, he saw there were a lot of treasure chests showing in their current room. He creaked one of them open on impulse. "Wait, Josh!" Aravan cried. "Not so--"
WHRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOUUUUOOOOUUUUUOOOOUUUU!!!
A brutally cold wind surrounded the young boy, encasing him in ice and draining his health for several seconds before the ice shattered. He was shivering badly even after being freed from his arctic prison. "Hol-l-l-l-l-l-ly..." he clattered, falling onto his rump just from trying to take a big step.
He definitely wasn't expecting, of all things, an Ice Trap.
Josh shakily equipped his HEAT BLADE and held its glowing business end close to him to try to warm himself up as quickly and as safely as possible. Once he wasn't shivering anymore, he could think straight. Looking around the chessboard, there were four torches in the corners. He jogged around the room, slashing across the tops of each to light them. Once all four were lit, an additional treasure chest appeared in the center of the ring, glittering lights bringing it to his attention. He opened that one, as well, this one containing a very important item for their forward progress.
Information> You obtained a SMALL KEY! This key will open any one locked door. You can use it only in this dungeon.
"So that's where the missing key was," Josh exhaled as he scanned the L-shaped room. "Except that didn't unlock the door, did it? The camera didn't pan toward it."
Aravan facepalmed, unable to help breaking out in laughter. "That's because it's not locked, you dunce!"
Josh peered around the corner, only to embarrassingly see that his sharp-witted RIVAL was correct. The puzzle they had to solve was for the key, not for progress. "I'm... sorry..." he trailed off, holding his head down in frustration not with the Trial and not with Aravan, but with himself. He was so distracted by thoughts of his Charizard that he was lapsing on the most basic of observational skills.
Shaking his head, Aravan led the way this time, catching a glimpse of Enigma disappearing into the back wall of one of the ever-familiar gear chambers... only this one had no gears in it. He could hear them grinding nearby, despite being none in sight. Getting the hint when he saw his Ultra Beast float through the rear wall, Aravan slowly walked toward it with an outstretched arm. When his hand disappeared into the wall, he concluded it was illusionary.
When Josh walked into it, it rippled and felt solid to him. "Ow! What in the world...?" Josh trailed off, confused. Did his Rival have to get through this one on his own?

The oceanographer was on his own, the space beyond the door frame fading to white in Josh's eyes. He could not see his RIVAL, nor could he see anything he was seeing. While he waited for his friend and friendly competitor to reckon with his past, the studious child spent time rearranging his mostly greyed-out inventory.
His concentration would be interrupted by a familiar, alien sound coming from what could only be Enigma.

What could Aravan have been presented with? Just what moment from his past was it that Seta's Trial was making him come to terms with? Once their conversation had ended, a shattering noise made Josh flinch, the white light emanating from the door frame fading to reveal his RIVAL staring at
Without another word from Enigma, the rock-type faded behind some purple and tan gears as his tentacles appeared to become solid. More of their sealed abilities making themselves available was the only sign Josh got that Aravan's acknowledgment, whatever it was, was sufficient for Enigma to believe.
With casts of BUFULA and PSIONGA from his RIVAL, the way to the dais was opened. "UNOVR to Joooooooosh," Aravan called out to his friend, assuming he was in a trance from how deeply he was focused on his menu work at the time.
The young boy shook his head. "What? What did I miss?"
"I think what the Trial is about... is our two Pokémon trying to bring out the best of each of us in both of us. That way, this won't happen again. To them, or to our other Pokémon. I envy how quickly you are able to make decisions in battle, Josh. When this is over, we should have a battle where we only have ten seconds to enter our commands... or whatever the minimum amount of time is."
Was Seta's trial trying to teach each of them about the other's strengths? Josh, to be more analytical and not go into every situation with a headlong rush? And Aravan, to not rely exclusively on his knowledge and trust his instincts when time was of the essence?
"You're on," Josh replied as the two stepped on the dais in the back, warping them to the central tower. "But we have to get our Pokémon back first. Let's unlock that back door." Spending his SMALL KEY, he unlocked said door, which took him to a room very similar to the one he was in before. Stepping on a hidden panel by mistake, it activated a slow-moving conveyor that transported a pair of masks, one of a Charizard and one of a Nihilego, toward an abyss at the end. The camera panned to a top-down view, giving him a good look at a rudimentary Sokoban puzzle with the simple goal of reaching several switches. After a few simple moves, he reached the first switch. Stepping on it, he heard a grinding noise from the other side of the conveyor... showing a door had been opened there. "Aravan, I can't do this alone! Go down the other side!"
His half of the challenge was not puzzle-based, but combat-based, forcing him to rely on his Player attacks to make colored gears in his way recede into the floor. Once every colored gear in the room had been struck with the appropriate element, a door receded into the ground on Josh's side, letting him tackle a slightly more complex puzzle. Pushing a key piece into a corner, he had to leave the room and re-enter it to reset the blocks' positions... all with the pressure of the masks being lost if he took too long.
After repeating the process for three stages, the duo reached the far end of the room and stood on two more switches, a flat gear rising from the abyss to cover the hole that the two masks would have fallen in. In the chamber's wide open space, Josh and Aravan recovered the masks, giving one another a big hug. The masks slipped out of their fingers and began to float, ghostly forms of Ares and Enigma appearing around the facial wear. As the cutscene played out, the missing Pokémon's bodies turned solid, then their limbs, and last, their extremities. With an alien screech and a draconic roar, the Charizard and Nihilego greeted their overwhelmed trainers.
"Enigma!" Aravan shouted, letting the Nihilego latch onto his head out of affection.
"Ares!" Josh cried, embracing the dragon now equipped with a saddle. "You're okay!"
"Josh, you've changed a lot since we became friends," the Charizard rumbled in a voice completely unlike his was as a Charmeleon. "For every year you've lost physically, you've grown up that much inside. Now, let's get the [tangent=hell]{CENSORED}[/tangent] outta here."
Unlike in every other dais room, this one had two large treasure chests. Josh and Aravan opened one each, finding their missing inventories within.
With their Advanced Classes fully restored, Josh was the first to return to the tower's central hub, happy to be in his light armorsuit again. "The entrance is behind us, Aravan! Let's blow this popsicle stand!"
"Right," the oceanographer replied... only to find heavy and thick iron bars in front of said entrance as Enigma floated between him and the sealed door. Not even the Ultra Beast could fit a tentacle between the door and the bars. "There's only one way to go now, and that's... up."
Splitting the work, the two turned around to strike the colored gears with their various Player attacks... and attacks from their two Pokémon. With every gear receding into the ground, a series of thuds accompanied floor panels falling into place, transforming the wall blocking entry into the tower into a multicolored staircase. "Let's... finish this," Josh exhaled.
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 2F
At the top of the stairs, the décor of the whole trial changed, looking like a creepy castle tower dimly lit only by flickering torchlight. What was perhaps more disturbing was the new music track: creepy, ominous organ music that filled both of them with an existential sense of dread.

If there were a lot of gears in the environment before, it was nothing compared to now. Every ceiling and wall spun like clockwork. Even the spiraling stairs, dimly lit by torch light, were made of stationary gear teeth. The music was equally unsettling, making Josh shiver. "Aravan, are you getting like... like... final boss vibes?" the child stammered.
"If you mean the final challenge of our Trial, yes," the aquatic specialist replied before turning back to comfort and muster Enigma in a language Josh didn't understand. "We can't turn back now. Do what you have to do to ready yourself. Ride, if you have to. It's wide enough in here." He was right; the stairs were as wide as those leading to prominent government buildings in the real world, designed for many, many people to traverse at once.
But Josh refrained. He wasn't certain how the Charizard would control or behave. Second, this wasn't just about his Pokémon. It was about him. "No. I don't need to. Being near him again is good enough," he replied, giving Ares another hug. The dragon embraced him back, a sign that he had forgiven Josh and the two truly loved and appreciated one another.
"I've been waiting, too," Ares chimed in. "Ever since I saw Granmarg carry you when I was a Charmander, I've dreamed of soaring the world's skies with you. It's been months. What's a few more minutes? A few more hours? We've come to grips with our pasts. Now, let's end this. Focus on the rest of the trial that's to come."
Josh nodded, holding the Heat Blade in his right hand. "Once we're out of here, we're going straight to Briarbane and getting your saddle made. Then we'll live our dreams... together." After all, what child didn't dream of riding a dragon?
With every step the duo took, Ares and Enigma walking and floating alongside them, the faint music became ever so slightly louder. Every step they took seemed amplified by the gears in the walls and ceilings turning in lockstep with their own strides.
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 3F
After what felt like seven flights worth of stairs, Josh came to a large, sliding door. "Hey, Ares, can I get a hand lifting this one up?"
"Yeah," the Charizard answered, extending his nails and slipping them beneath the seam to get leverage. "One... two... three!" With two grunts and a flare in the fire-type's tail, the two thrust the door upward, bringing Josh, Aravan, and their Pokémon into an octagonal room. Once all four of them were inside, the door slammed shut behind them, an iron portcullis falling in front of it. Both their visions faded to white, wavering and shimmering like a mirage.
When they could see again, the two found themselves surrounded by a gigantic, circular waterfall, in front of them a distorted shape roughly that of a Kyogre. A BLUE ORB shimmered above the behemoth, the creature growing in size to that of a Colossal Pokémon. "Poseidon!" Aravan reached for what he thought was his Kyogre. the creature undergoing PRIMAL REVERSION.
In the middle of the cutscene, Josh checked his team and his stats. They were much higher than they were before... as though he had gained around ten levels in the blink of an eye. Sweeper was completely maxed. Ironsmith completely maxed. He had a hard time imagining wielding such power. He had an entire arsenal of powerful loot that pushed his HP to four figures. As a Player, he was Very Rare, possessing tier 4 elemental skills he never knew existed.
Aravan, too, possessed might beyond his wildest dreams. A master Swimmer, Freezer, Jeweler, Painter, and even Starlet, his attacks were more potent than before, though his true strength lied in his buffs, debuffs, and recovery techniques. Was this his true calling - a Support specialist? Working together, they could be a much greater force than both of them on their own.
The Kyogre, now primal and glowing a deep azure, opened its building-sized jaws, an ORIGIN PULSE forming at its mouth. The Ironsmith stood in front of the blast, shielding Aravan and the water-weak Pokémon from the attack. "Josh, you can't! You'll die out there!" Aravan protested.
"Yes, I can, but I can't do it alone! I'll need your help!"
"You fool! Are you crazy?! You'll be a human donut from that much water pressure!"
"I won't if you just help me! Remember, this is Seta's Trial! It's designed to be overcome, but we'll need to use every tool at our disposal! Even if we don't leave the trial with some of them, it's there for a reason -- to be used! Now hurry!"
Without saying a word, the musician began to move to the creepy beat, raining LUSTER CANDY upon not only Josh, but Ares and Enigma, as well. All their stats went up significantly, giving him the defensive prowess he needed to remain standing. He still suffered a colossal amount of damage that would have clearly been unsurvivable without his partner's aid.
As Enigma readied a MIRROR COAT and Ares' mouth glowed with DRAGON BREATH, their vision again faded to white, returning the two trainers and their Pokémon to the large room they were in before. With an artificial-sounding jingle, the bars locking the doors shut receded into the ceiling, opening the way forward -- and further upstairs.
"Was that... the future? Our future?" Josh asked, Aravan remaining silent in bewilderment. Was that really Poseidon? Or was that another Kyogre? Every answer seemingly sprouted two more questions...

The more gear-stairs Josh and Aravan ascended, the louder the organ music became, making them speak up to communicate with one another. "It's hard to say," Aravan answered. "We can't change the past, but what we do in the present can help us change the future. Maybe the Trial is showing us possible futures. I don't want to think of a future where I lose control of Poseidon..." he trailed off as the two reached the fourth floor, the boy needing to take a seat after climbing so much.
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 4F
"I don't either," Josh added. Legendary Pokémon were powerful, but in many other media, were fickle beings. He felt that in an ever-changing world like UNOVR, they could very easily turn on their trainers if not treated what they felt was respectfully. They were the apexes of their elements, after all. Storm was based on a thunderbird, revered as a god in some South American cultures. The Zapdos brothers were pliable enough as young, but how would their personalities change when they grew up? What made it more difficult was they didn't speak, like several of Josh's other Pokémon. Surely, they would speak and grow personalities of their own once they were adults. "Obviously, they're powerful if the bond is truly there. I'm just afraid of an abusive relationship between legendary Pokémon and trainer."
Aravan held his head low, shaking his head. "You think like that, Josh, and they will be. I've been around you long enough to know how you think." The rest of the discussion would have blurred the line between NPC and player character, but the message reached Josh all the same. UNOVR was a world that adapted to its players' desires, whether subconscious or not. His consumption of the Pokémon animated series, and Pokémon Special on top of that, had shaped his inner consciousness to believe that legendary Pokémon were gods.
If a player truly willed it to be, even Groudon could be as docile as a house Skitty. Big Bee was living proof of that.
Gritting his teeth, the young boy stood up, Ares walking toward the next door. "Let's move on. I think Ares is growing impatient."
"With how long I've been stuck here waiting for you, you think?!" the Charizard barked, a few embers flying from his mouth.
"Geez, buddy! Easy!" Josh exclaimed, ducking for cover from the fireworks-like display before helping his partner open the door.
Inside was a similar chamber to the one he saw two floors below, with one key difference: an ornate, blue and yellow treasure chest occupied its exact center. The chest was surrounded with a veil of flames on all sides, making it impossible to open. Just like before, iron bars locked Josh and Aravan in from both sides. "What vision is it showing us this time?" the Bolter asked as their eyesight again faded to white.
Josh and Aravan surfaced in the wastes of Mistra, at an even higher level and with more HP than before. Ares was so strong that the periodic 50 HP losses felt like tickling to him. Soaring on their Pokémon, Enigma affected by a HUGE SEAL, the two braced themselves for the wrath of the very Corrupted creature that set in motion the circumstances that caused Josh's two Pokémon to be trapped in the Everworld in the first place:
The Lord of the Flies and his signature skill, Death Flies.
A fog of bloodstained flies descended upon Josh, Aravan, and their two Pokémon, merely the buzzing noise itself unbearably loud. The true agony would come when all the flies started biting. The last time he and Alicia Westfield had been victims of the mighty assault, they had both Whited Out instantly. This time was different; while Aravan instantly fell in combat like Josh's friend did not, cosmetic Corruption burns appeared on the young boy's skin, dealing him heavy -type damage that only a high-level Tank could survive. The icon of the SEER class flashed in the bottom right corner of the screen: a sign of the source of his immunity to Dark-type instant KO attacks.
Not wasting another second, Josh and Ares dove toward the writhing creature, both aiming for its wicked-looking proboscis with high-power fire attacks. He let go of the reins with both hands, letting the cocoon saddle hold him in place as he cast the biggest fireball he could: AGIBARION. The INFERNO attack encircling it added to the spell's explosive might, burning so brightly that Josh's and Aravan's vision again faded to white.
Waking up inside the tower again, Josh and Aravan stretched, getting to their feet. A curious, eight-bit, eight-note melody played once they were both standing, the iron bars blocking the upward-leading staircase receding into the ceiling above. The veil of flames surrounding the treasure chest disappeared, as well. Walking up to it slowly, Josh opened its heavy, metallic, squeaky lid. Inside was a golden, ornate key whose head was in the shape of a Pyroar's, its eyes formed by red gemstones.
"That was... a lot," the sweaty blonde sighed. "But if that vision is true, then the secret to defeating the Lord of the Flies in Mistra will be unlocking the Seer class. Too much to do, and not enough BYTES to spend..."
Aravan, on the other hand, wasn't sweating. Was it his SWIMMER class, or was it that Josh was more directly affected by the vision? "Tell me about it. I think that does confirm one thing about this tower, though. This is the Trial of Time. The basement has been about the past. Our past. It would reason that the tower is about the future. And not just our future. This future could affect the entire server."
"I wouldn't read into that quite so heavily, but Seta is trying to show us something. Perhaps future roadblocks so that Ares and Enigma don't wind up in the Everworld again."
Without replying to Josh, Aravan turned to Enigma and began speaking in a language the boy could not understand. Though he had plans for his second Advanced Class, perhaps investing in a level or two of Contact would help him understand Izoni better. He simply showed affection toward Ares while the two had their unknown conversation, the two again embracing one another. "We're almost out of here, buddy," Josh consoled the fire-type, his tear jumping from his cheek to slide down his Charizard's belly.
"I know," the dragon answered. "Stay strong, Josh. I think the hardest part of the Trial is still to come."

Memoria ad Stultitiam - 5F
As the Ironsmith, Swimmer, and their two Pokémon climbed toward the top of the tower, the organ music grew louder and louder, as though there was something -- or someone -- playing the haunting, unsettling melody. Nerves grew as the staircase turned clockwise, only the trial-goers' voices, footsteps, and the sound of shifting gears audible over the maestro above. "Are you sweating, too, Aravan?" Josh asked, each of his upward steps shaky.
The aquatic specialist didn't want to admit it, but the reflective beads beneath his eyes and brow gave him little choice. "Yes," Aravan answered.
[tangent="After all we've been through, you better not screw this up,"]"⏃⎎⏁⟒⍀ ⏃⌰⌰ ⍙⟒'⎐⟒ ⏚⟒⟒⋏ ⏁⊑⍀⍜⎍☌⊑ ⏁⍜☌⟒⏁⊑⟒⍀, ⊬⍜⎍ ⏚⟒⏁⏁⟒⍀ ⋏⍜⏁ ⌇☊⍀⟒⍙ ⏁⊑⟟⌇ ⎍⌿,"[/tangent], spoke Enigma, the Nihilego resting atop his trainer's head, the two minds as one.
"What did he say?" Josh asked, the two having traveled in a near complete circle with no real change of scenery.
"He said to not screw this up, and I agree. This is the one chance we've got at getting back our Pokémon. Who knows how long it will be before Seta gives us another chance if we come out of here empty-handed... or another chance at all."
After one final turn up the tower's east side, a large, golden lock and chains held the door leading upstairs fast. "We're here..." the blonde shivered.
"We are. Make sure you're as prepared as you can be. Reorder your inventory so that that your most used items are on top of it. Make sure all your shortcuts are right. Change out your equipment and make sure it's right. We won't have time in the middle of a battle this big." Even his RIVAL, once irritable, now calm as a river on a sunny day, dripped with beads of sweat and showed visible goose bumps. "But don't take too long; this isn't gonna get any easier if we put it off. You're the one with the Boss Key. When you're ready, turn that lock open, and let's go."
And take his time Josh did; he went through all his menus and shortcuts not once, not twice, but three times to ensure everything was exactly as he wanted it. Buffs and damage of varying types were on speed dial. Without a healing command at his disposal natively, he would have to rely on Aravan to extend his health pool in what he expected to be the final battle. Taking a deep breath, the blonde let Ares lift him upward, inserted the golden key into the lock, and turned it. With a loud CLANG, the metallic device fell to the floor, as did the chains it was holding.
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 6F
Ascending to the penultimate floor, flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder accompanied the organ music's increasing volume. Five pillars in the shape of a cross stretched to the ceiling and beyond, one of them housing the staircase they had entered the chamber from. Rather than a boss, the group found a bevy of pickups to top off their health and resources they may have spent; it was as though they had stayed overnight at an inn. A howling wind blew through a shattered stained-glass window depicting a Charizard and Nihilego. "Where's the boss?" Josh asked Aravan, he and his Charizard pacing about the room.
Aravan didn't respond verbally - he simply whistled for Josh and his Charizard to keep moving upward... which he reluctantly did. On the other side of the broken window was another staircase, this one much wider than before, draped in pristine red carpeting that felt wrong to sully with dirty shoes. A howling wind could be heard from the outside, every lightning strike illuminating stained-glass windows featuring Charizard on their left, Nihilego on their right. Each bolt casted a colored, Nihilego-shaped shadow upon the four as they walked up the wide stairs with trepidation, the music growing ever so slightly louder with every step they ascended.
It wsn't just Josh that was scared. Aravan's hair was standing on end, too. They had overcome many difficult challenges, together and apart. To obtain his Kyogre DNA, Aravan had to hold his breath almost to his limits without the Swimmer class. Josh had to contend with Hearteater, one of the nastiest raid bosses to date in the main storyline. Not once, but twice. As the dreadful ambiance and immersion weighed down upon him, he had expectations that whatever was on the top floor would be leagues beyond even that... and that it might be too much for both of them put together.
Memoria ad Stultitiam - 7F
"Beyond that door," Aravan finally responded, pointing to a door that looked like an exact copy of the one that had guarded the entrance to the sixth floor. "That's where the boss is."
Josh trembled as he climbed onto his Charizard's back again, the dragon lifting him into the air so he could insert his BOSS KEY into the second lock. After hearing the clang of the lock hit the mortars, the boy trembled. "I'm... I'm nervous, Ares... I... I can't do this..." Josh trailed off, his skin a pale white as though he was terribly sick.
"Josh, it's not like you to back down from a challenge. You and I have soloed Colossal Battles before. You were the second person in all of UNOVR to climb the Tower of Worms all by yourself. If there's anyone that can overcome this challenge, it's you."
"But--"
"NO BUTS! Get that [tangent="fucking"]{CENSORED}[/tangent] door open and get your [tangent="ass"]{CENSORED}[/tangent] in there! We've come way too [tangent="fucking"]{CENSORED}[/tangent] far to quit now! Now, GO!!" The irate Charizard reached for Josh, grabbed him in his claws, and hurled him through the door transition before tailing him beyond.
"For someone collecting the Essences of Courage, he sure can be a coward some days," Aravan sneered as he and his Nihilego crossed the zone line. Their vision faded to white as the dungeon's final room loaded...

What Josh and Aravan saw behind the images was blurred and distorted, much like the ones on the lower floors of the tower climb. If it wasn't obvious before that they were viewing visions of a possible future, they were now. Both their levels were at the game's cap. They both had every role, Sweeper, Tank, and Support, completely mastered. Every Basic Class and Advanced Class, Tier 5. Everything that could be maxed was maxed. Other than his Charizard, every Pokémon in his Pokémon menu was a Shiny Legendary, though they were greyed out due to the stipulations of Seta's Trial.
It was hard to imagine a being powerful enough to contend with them both.
A grating ringing noise directed Josh's attention upward, seeing a familiar green-etted encased in a giant, floating aquamarine, the eight ESSENCES OF WISDOM circling around it. She wasn't the only familiar face; the eight ESSENCES OF POWER rotated around a certain pinkette that had turned best friend, both online and offline. "Alicia Westfield !! Shalin Nariya !!" Josh cried as he reached for the two of them. As his present self drew the THUNDER BUSTER, the self in his vision drew a sword he did not recognize. The eight ESSENCES OF COURAGE floated around the blade, merging into it and making its business end glow a brilliant green.
All of a sudden, a colossal Corrupted hand in a familiar shape shattered the ceiling from above, shrapnel raining down upon the two gemstone-imprisoned ladies and the two freedom fighters that apparently would come to their rescue in this possible future. Familiar and dreadful, he remembered the titanic, pulsing, pink, red, and black hand from the PARK OF DOGS. One of the most powerful beings in the Pokémon universe. And instead of fifteen trainers working together to take the behemoth down, it would be just the two of them.
"Since the beginning of time, I have been searching for the missing Essences. Never in any universe did I think they would be hidden within you three!"
Taking several moments to compose himself, Josh pointed his electric sword at the giant appendage breaching the tower. "You can't just take my friends from me! Whether they be those two, Ares, Aravan, Enigma, or any of our Pokémon! And that goes for Zacian and Zamazenta, too! We, and all the Pokémon in not just that park, but all throughout UNOVR! They're our friends, and you can't just take them away from us!"
"I already had Enigma taken away from me once," Aravan courageously added, his future self charging a casting of AQUABARION in his hands. "I will not let anyone take him away from me again."
Just as Aravan finished, Josh could have sworn he heard gasps from the two imprisoned. As the music went silent, the Corrupted creature's monologue crescendoed in the organ's place.
"And now that all the Essences are gathered in one place, not one of you can stop the Darkest Day from coating this wretched planet." Red and purple bolts flicked from the seemingly divine being's fingers toward the red and blue gems, causing them to slowly fade away, along with the surrounding Essences. The following line from its mouth, which Josh recognized from another media source, made him smirk.
"These toys are too much for you. I command you to return them to me!!"
Unlike the last two visions, which seemed to be just movies, Josh and Aravan seemed to be in full control of their selves in the vision, on the same side of two forces meeting one another with godlike powers. The driving beat that filled the silence hit with such intensity that it could only be interpreted as "final boss music".
Charge times for attacks felt leagues faster than they did outside the vision. Josh was paralyzed by the sheer number of options he had in combat. As a Very Rare Player, he had access to every Player skill in the game. While the boy was scrolling through the menus, Aravan was much more proactive, trying every element he could think of to discern the hand's Type. AQUABARION, ineffective. AGIBARION, ineffective. ZIOBARION, ineffective. "What are you doing, Josh?! Just pick a type and help me figure this out!" Aravan barked as fingers of the claw raced toward both of them and their Pokémon, envenoming Ares, Enigma, and the Players with CROSS POISON through their natural accessory-granted immunity to the ailment.
Seeing a Nihilego poisoned didn't look right. Was this how endgame content was? Bosses that could just No Sell immunity that players worked so hard to obtain?
The damage inflicted was equally staggering; at their levels outside the vision, it would have easily one-shotted all of them. "On it, Aravan!" Josh cried back, struggling to stand as the venom burned him from within and turned his model's skin purple. Even the poison ticks would have been a one-hit wonder at their lower levels, a testament to just how high their stats were in this endgame state. Once he was at last on his feet, he let fly with a rain of giant ice crystals that must have seemed like small knives to the floating monstrosity above them. A recoil and s hiss, on top of thousands of damage being inflicted, was a sign that Ice-type moves were effective. "Immune to fire, water, and lightning, but weak to ice... is it Dragon-type?"
Before Josh could fully issue the command to have Ares use a dragon-type attack, their foe stretched its fingers as wide as it could, absorbing pink, purple, and red energy into a cannon obscured by the cloud that the rest of its body was hidden behind. A spine-chilling message appeared on both their UIs:
Combat Log> All stats fully increased!
"We need to remove those buffs before it gets another turn! Enigma, CLEAR SMOG!" Aravan ordered, the Nihilego pointing its diminutive-by-comparison tentacles toward their Corrupted foe and spraying a toxic cloud toward it. Though it drained the attack, slightly healing it, the tactic had its intended effect.
Combat Log> All stat increases have been removed.
Despite having its buffs removed, the cannon behind the clouds continued to charge, red, pink, and purple light piercing the clouds and revealing the titanic cannon aimed right at the four of them. "Dodge, everyone!" Josh shouted over the sound of the charging energy growing louder and louder. "And drop its stats as much as you can!" The two Players cast a flurry of DEBILITATES toward their mysterious enemy before all four freedom fighters prepared to leap, hover, and fly out of the cannon's direct path.
There was truly no escaping the ETERNABEAM. The column of draconic, venom-laced hatred merely grazed all four of them, their efforts to DODGE preventing a complete, party-wide WHITE OUT. Even that graze lit their digitized bodies up, pushing Josh almost to the limits of his pain tolerance. Red spots appeared on both their bodies as a cosmetic effect to show just how close they were to the brink of disappearing from the Trial.
