Getting an extended period of time off work to be able to knock out the last few quests in Ostellia was a pain in the butt. Such was life as a supervisor: with only one other sup to cover, getting days off at the end of the week was a challenge. It took him several weeks, but he was at last able to get four days off in a row to knock this quest out with Alicia Westfield .
"Apollo, you ready?" Josh asked as he hurled the Celesteela's Poké Ball, the steel-type nearly knocking him off his feet with the thrust of her exhaust. "Such power... one day, we'll be able to soar over Ostellia together..." he mused as he checked what level he would need to be to craft a saddle for the living rocket. He was a long ways off.
Once the sound of an owl pierced the sky, signifying night had begun in game, Josh sent Alicia a direct message.
DIRECT MESSAGE> It's nighttime, and we've got one more quest we need to get knocked out. I get the feeling no one's done it yet, despite it being available for a while. Want to knock it out? Meet me in the Drowned Harbor, Route 7. And bring an aquatic steed. You'll need it - the surf's rough.

DIRECT MESSAGE> I had been looking for any evidence that that quest had been completed myself earlier. I found no such thing. So I’m en route now.Alicia sighed softly as she rode on Nushi to arrive on the scene. A night excursion was something she hadn’t actually done before. When it ended up being night in UNOVR she was busy grinding out levels for her team one way or another. The lab was one thing. Something she wasn’t going to let happen ever again if she could help it. Even though she couldn’t be afraid of going on potentially dangerous quests like this. She had to suppress a small twinge of fright when Josh had messaged her. It was irrational, of course. It was hardly Josh’s fault. She’d gone in without being fully ready, without bringing her full might to bear. ”Maybe we’ll get more context for the stuff we read about in Sector Jarzick. I remember you were about to mention a name in particular before you were interrupted.” Alicia commented as she dismounted. While she expected to be getting back on soon enough, giving the fish a break would be ideal when she could. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

It wouldn't take Alicia long to arrive astride the psychic fish. When she arrived, she would see a Celesteela floating above Ulysses and the rider atop the sea lion Pokémon. His skin tingled when Alicia triggered his mind to recall a particular name from Jarzick. He hesitated before uttering the name in question.
"Necrozma." It was a terrifying dragon and psychic Pokémon that wielded light itself as a weapon. "If you've gone about your Ostellia exploration, all the clues seem to point to Necrozma as the next raid boss -- and the next legendary Pokémon we can hatch. It would take maxing its moves out, but... could you imagine how fast you'd go on one?" he asked, specifically referring to Ultra Necrozma's yellow and white dragon form. Josh shuddered to think how harsh such a grind would be to attain a level high enough to fly on a Necrozma.

”That would be your first thought…” Alicia mused, smirking. She was surprised to see the Celesteela in Josh’s arsenal. She had to wonder when Josh had come back around to grab a second Invasive Species. Either way, it would be a nice addition to their fighting force, so she was hardly going to complain. ”I thought that’s what I heard you start saying though, so I was looking it up myself. Depending on how UNOVR handles things… it might actually be a tragic tale of the beast having to do something undesirable just to survive. Or maybe it’ll be your standard faire of just ‘fight the boss until its HP is depleted’. I don’t know. But with how this world is, I’m keeping my mind open.” Alicia added, nodding in agreement with Josh’s working theory. ALERT> BEGINNING QUEST: DRAGON’S DEN
What lies in the oceans beyond? At that moment, a distant marker formed over the darkened waves. Alicia heaved a steadying breath as she looked towards their apparent destination, releasing Venex into the air. The dragon-bee chittered a bit, and Alicia whistled to him in response. After that, the Ultra Beast fell into line just behind and to the would-be hero and psychic fish’s right. ”… Let’s go.” she finished with certainty, urging Nushi onward with Venex following close behind. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"I mean, are you surprised?" Josh returned Alicia's smirk with one of his own. "Necrozma is a dragon, and it's got light elements to it. With one of those, who needs fast travel?" Clearly anyone who got sick from how fast the Pokémon could fly. Any turn on it at speed would be gut-twisting. Even so, the scout welcomed the idea and looked forward to it were the opportunity to arise. "That'd be a way to get me to spend 400 BYTES on maxing out Sweeper moves, I give you that much."
As Alicia activated the quest, a slew of objectives would appear at the top of the duo's HUDs:
Information> New objective! Document Invasive Species carrying lights across the sea Information> New objective! Photograph spiral constellation Information> New objective! Photograph whirlpool marked "Dragon's Den"
The mention of a whirlpool was a bit unsettling. "Hopefully Ulysses is strong enough of a swimmer to be able to evade this Dragon's Den's suction. With Aqua Jet in his arsenal, he should be able to... at least in theory." They wouldn't know until they tried. "Let's ride!" With the two of them on their aquatic Pokémon, Apollo and Venex watching over them, the duo would be able to combat any Invasive Species that wanted to pick a fight with them.

”Not at all.” Alicia replied with a smile. ”If I could get one and get it’s Ultra form without the intermediate transformation… that’d be nice. I just would feel bad if I had to subject a Solgaleo or Lunala to what seems like parasitic predation…”With how many vibrant personalities she’s seen even within her own team, she couldn’t stomach the idea of just using them for her own desires. In other games, she’d be fine as there was no personality to them. They were just sprites and stats from that perspective. UNOVR though was giving her a new appreciation for the thought’s N was made to present to the player. ”Remember if you have the Swimmer Class that your aquatic mons can go through the air too.” Alicia noted, demonstrating by pulling Nushi up a few feet into the air. ”As long as you don’t get knocked off your ride, you should be fine.”The hero to be smiled. There wasn’t going to be any losses for either of them this time. She was going to see to that one way or another. ”So… what kind of Invasive Species fly. Because I don’t think any of them swim particularly well? I suppose I could be mistaken of course.””Maybe this ‘Nihilego’ type you mentioned to the rest of us?” Nushi suggested, tilting his head. ”You said someone encounter a few in this section of Ostellia, ya?””That would make logical sense…” Alicia mused. ”Seems a bit too easy, but I don’t have any other ideas at this time so I suppose we’re looking for floating jellyfish.”——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"I think you'll be able to, if what happened with the Kyogre was any indication,"(1) Josh brought to Alicia's attention. "Of course, it's all speculation, but my theory is those kinds of forms get lumped in with Mega Evolution. Of course, I don't have a Mega Evolution Pokémon yet, and after I get into the Identity Parlor, I've already got 800 Bytes tied up. I told you I'm going to raise not one, but two Zapdos, didn't I?"
If he didn't, the revelation may have come as a shock. Why would Josh need two? He could only ride one at a time, and he was way too low of a level to even think about mounting a legendary Pokémon.
Josh, on the other hand, hadn't seen too many personalities; his team's PokéSpeech had thus far been limited to Pokémon that were special to him: his starter, his first steed, and the like. Ulysses hadn't spoken a word since the day they fought in the Arena -- not even as a Seel. Alicia's demonstration of what the Swimmer class could do made Josh raise his palm to his forehead. "Riiiiight..." he sighed, forgetting that Swimmers' Pokémon could do that. He pulled upward on the Dewgong's reins, Ulysses leaping above the water's surface and swimming through the air above. "I didn't think to use it to travel over water."
Nushi's comment about Nihilego made Josh shiver inside. He had heard horror stories about it. "Yep, I ran into them when saving Shalin Nariya out here once. We've become good friends since, but man is she messed up in the head. How she does what she does with that Pheromosa... I can't wrap my head around it. Wouldn't vibrations like that hurt?"
As Josh's trusty steed floated above the waves, he caught sight of a whirlpool on the horizon. Ascending to maximum height, he began bobbing up and down exactly ten feet above the water's surface. "Nihilego ahead. And don't disturb any of them. Shalin told me that they can inflict a status ailment that you can't heal at a shrine."

”Good point.” Alicia agreed, nodding. She did quirk an eyebrow at the mention of Josh’s plans. ”Burning 50 AP as well if I’m not mistaken? What, planning to raise ‘em as brothers?”Not to mention changing on to Galarian, she imagined. He’d mentioned the Galarian version of Zapdos before. So it made sense that he was considering getting both types. ”I think that required both of us to intervene. She was biting off more than she could chew with that Pheromosa if I recall correctly?” the pinkette commented. ”Regarding the vibrations… I’m just gonna file that under ‘built different’ and call it a day. Less headache that way.”And then Josh spotted their targets ahead. ”I see ‘em. We’re gonna get a bit closer to document them more clearly.””Won’t they hear us?” her Veluza asked. ”Not if we come from below.” Alicia countered. They weren’t close enough to the whirlpool to be of concern yet. But they’d have to be in and out. With a gentle push, Alicia angled Nushi down, submerging completely underwater by a few inches. Then with a tap, she had Nushi activate Aqua Jet. Their slightly distorted image under the waves would be seen surging forward. Aside from a slight swell of the water from their passing, Alicia and Nushi’s approach was fairly quiet. Given a Veluza’s innate speed, even without Filet Away’ing first, the Jet carried them quite a distance before Alicia had Nushi cut the turbo. So the pinkette was slow and deliberate in her following ascent. Taking a soft breath as she watched the alien jellies floating through the air. It seemed as if a little star of light was on each tentacle. As well as alighting within the odd liquid crystal figures of the Nihilego swarm. It looked like each one was a malleable prism, splitting the rays of light into all the colors of the rainbow in ways that was undeniably Chaos. Given the objectives of the quest, she dod have access to a snapshot functionality for the duration of the quest. With plenty of efforts taken to ensure it could only be used for what it was intended to do, rather than an attempt to circumvent Terms of Service. Not that she had any interest in trying to violate them. She snapped a few images of the floating swarm, all angled towards and approaching the whirlpool that was presumably The Dragon’s Den. ”Alright, let’s get back to Josh…” Alicia whispered to her mount. ”Please. This is spooky!” Nushi replied, taking it on himself to dive back down and about face, jetting back to meet up with Josh, Ulysses, Apollo, and Venex again. ”Well that was a one in a million sight…” The pinkette finished as she and Nushi popped back into the air beside her fellow player. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

"Indeed," Josh answered. "I'm planning on buying only a couple things from the Arena Shop. Legendary DNA and Huge Seals. Legendary Pokémon inevitably make the best mounts. And since Raikou isn't available in the game yet, Zapdos is the closest I'll get. I PVP regularly enough that I can just hold the AP for when the Pokémon drops in the game." A sly smile was wrought upon the racer's face as he thought about it. "And when it does... buckle up."
For he fully intended to push the Beast to the limits of its speed. Given that all three of them knew how to use Extreme Speed... redlining would be an understatement.
"You see, I've got this vision where I want all my Pokémon to be in the 5 to 8 foot range, regardless of the average size listed in the Pokédex. It's why maxing out Swimmer is on my list of things to do, so I can splash into Gardener. I've seen what you've done with Tikani and want to take it a step farther."
He did recall Shalin having difficulty controlling the Pheromosa. "That's why I don't take Izoni out of Ostellia," Josh answered, feeling he was one of the few that was a good boy, rather than letting the Naganadel out of its Poké Ball and stinging anything in sight. "Built different is certainly a way to put it," he laughed, still unable to envision how she did what she did. One, how did she get the saddle on the wing, and two, the vibrations. Just the vibrations.
He shook his head; there would be time to ask her later. For now, Josh needed to focus.
He, too, had a camera function for the mission, its use restricted to the Drowned Harbor. While he was waiting for the more heroic and brave Gardener to snap some photos of the Ultra Beasts, the racer guided his Dewgong back to the water's surface, pulling back on Ulysses' reins to get him to tilt upward. While it made keeping his balance a little harder, Josh didn't have to crane his neck as high to look at the cloudless night sky. There appeared to be all kinds of Pokémon constellations in the sky, one of a Zekrom catching his eye. He snapped a photo of it to show Alicia at the end of the mission, knowing that the image would disappear once the Quest was completed.
Getting to work, he scanned the sky's other side. It took a few passes, but Josh was able to locate the constellation requested, reminding him of an Omastar's shell. When they returned, they would see that two of the three objectives were marked as complete. He tried to load the image of the Zekrom constellation, but he could not; it seemed the images they had taken were in a format that could not be read. The game seemed to be looking for the actioni of taking the photograph, rather than the quality of the photograph itself. "I found a Zekrom constellation while looking for the spiral one. I took a picture of it, but it seems we can't even view our own pictures. Probably encroaches upon TOS."
Now, only the hard part of the Quest remained...

"Oh jeez, what have I caused?" Alicia asked jokingly about Josh's plans. "Come to think of it, that's why Shalin was a Gardener at first too, isn't she? Probably going to dip back into that class when she can..."When she returned from her excursion, she hummed in thought regarding Shalin's issues with Nymris. "I might be able to start using Venex outside of Ostellia myself soon enough. It's been... a thing but I've been teaching him English the hard way. Almost up to small words. And with how intelligent he's shown himself to be, it's probably just a matter of teaching definitions and repetition for memory's sake at this point. Once that's done, we can actually get to the bottom of whatever his deal is with Asper."Venex let out a happy chirp at that point, as if to confirm what Alicia was saying. The Gardener smiled at that, before glancing up to the sky. Since Josh couldn't show her the picture, she made a point to try and spot it for herself before they moved on to the final objective. "Probably. I get why, but it's still a bit upsetting we can't share these. So now we just figure out how to approach the whirlpool without attracting the attention of the jellies. I'unno about you, but there's this cute fish movie where there was a psuedo-horror moment with Jellyfish. I'd rather not re-enact that...""Seconded." Nushi immediately followed up, pupils shrinking. "I'm fast, but if we get surrounded...""Yeah, you're not that fast..." Alicia mused, taking a moment to lean back and fold her hands together in thought. Given how much light was in the Nihilego... there was the slimmest chance that they were all at 'capacity' and might overlook them because of inability to harvest more energy. But she didn't want to bet on that if she didn't have to. It didn't stop them from simply toxifying them either. Or whatever weird charm effect Shalin had the misfortune of encountering. They also had no idea if something was going to jump out at them from the whirlpool itself. While she didn't think there were any swimmers among the Ultra Beast's numbers, that didn't preclude the possibility of the Dragon's Den being deep enough for something to comfortably sit at it's deepest point and still have access to air at will. That one glutton of a beast was implied to be quite massive... "Any ideas, Josh? My underwater approach was fine enough for getting closer without triggering a reaction, but actually passing the veritable parade of Nihilego is probably not going to end well for us if we try that. So if you have a better idea I'm all ears." Alicia finished, looking to him curiously. Brute force was likely right out. Her stealth option was something of a thin reed that they might push too far... There was no good way through this, was there? ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Josh shrugged at Alicia's humor, not seeing it as funny; he was serious about his plans. "It makes sense, though, doesn't it? Imagine a Jolteon big enough to saddle!" Of course, it would require a very special saddle to prevent those quills from poking into anyone who rode it, but once all needed precautions were taken, the speed at which one could travel across the world would be breathtaking.
Hearing the progress Alicia was making with Venex was equally mindblowing. "That's impressive. I can't even get Izoni to change her battle tactics, let alone understand a word I say. Even if I was level 28 right now, I don't think I'd even try to fly on her. I can't imagine what a thrust of her sting would feel like for someone riding her. Almost like a Tauros trying to buck you off, I imagine."
Josh listened to Alicia's musings about getting close enough to the whirlpool to photograph it. "I spent some time talking to her about it. It seems that whatever curse they've laid upon her Pokémon only takes effect in the presence of Nihilego," he relayed to his friend. "Honestly, I think our best bet is to use our Naganadel as distractions. It's not clean, but it's the best I've got. Unless you want to sit around and brainstorm some more, then that's what we'll do." He didn't like the idea of engaging so many of them in combat. He had also failed to consider whether or not other Invasive Species were vulnerable to Nihilego poison...

”It does. I’m just amused it took a run in with myself to make you start looking in the direction of the Gardener class.” Alicia replied with a smile. Then she had to think about the fact they were going into a swarm of Nihilego. ”Shalin’s Bulbasaur was effected as well… that means Poison Status Immunity or resistance doesn’t stop this Charm effect. That means Izoni, Apollo, and Venex are all likely vulnerable as well. If anything they might be more vulnerable because they’re also Ultra Beasts. The toxins might be coded to be more effective against them because Nihilego are used to encountering them. Still, we don’t have a better idea.”Pulling another Pokeball out, she tossed them and released a newcomer into the world. The orange-striped sushi fish flopped about as she fluttered through the air and rested on Alicia’s shoulder. ”Is it time, Momma?” she asked cutely. Alicia smiled and nodded. ”It’s going to be a hard one, Nym… make sure to speak up if you’re in trouble.” the Gardener replied. Addressing both of them, she turned series. ”You’re going to flank Venex while he attacks the swarm ahead of us. Cover him. Hit and run tactics only, and keep your distance as much as you can. Break open a hole for Nushi, Ulysses, Josh, and I to use to reach the Dragon’s Den proper.”She then whistles to Venex, who perked up and pulled alongside the pinkette. Alicia continued whistling in various pitches, pantomiming motions with her hands. Possibly instructing the dragon-bee similarly as much as she could given the limited communication attempt. Venex tilted his head, chittering a bit, before letting out a soft roar. ”Alright… Josh, with me. If you have extra help, nows the time.” Alicia then took a breath. ”Three… Two… One… GO!”With a squeeze, she had Nushi surge forward with an Aqua Jet. Her supporting mons both let out cries of their own as they charged with her. With Venex and Nym immediately letting fly with Dragon and Water Pulses respectively into the swarm. It was quite an effective distraction it seemed, as the swarm shifted to respond to the incoming attacks. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Not only was it semi-permanent, but it ignored the poison typing, as well. What a potent neural venom. "I don't know, either, and I'd rather not find out. We don't need our most powerful Pokémon turning against us," Josh reiterated before cooing at the cute Tatsugiri. While the small fish wasn't a Pokémon he appreciated, due to it being too small to saddle, such was the beauty of the franchise.
With over a thousand species, there was something for everyone.
Listening to the plan, Josh called upon his own Naganadel, Izoni. "I'm actually going to keep my third active Pokémon slot open in case we get attacked directly. That's something I've learned from all my solo adventures. The fastest way to get wiped out is having three Pokémon out of their Poké Balls, all far away from you." While it didn't apply to him as much now, it would soon. For the Bolter class, and the Player class by proxy, was not far away.
When Alicia and Nushi surged ahead, Josh likewise slammed his heels into the Dewgong's blubber. While Ulysses' AQUA JET wasn't nearly as powerful as Nushi's, it was still plenty fast, the rider hooting and hollering as though he was on a wild carnival ride. "Wheeeee-haaaaaa!!" he whooped, inadvertently attracting the attention of a Nihilego that Izoni looked ready to sting.

Alicia quirked an eyebrow at Josh’s comment as he released Izoni into the air. Ulysses, Apollo, Izoni… that was three, wasn’t it? Fortunately, their set ups meant they had a mon beside, or rather under, them at all times for this quest. Still, she didn’t have a chance to respond, they were already moving. Nihilego were coming their way, and Nym, Venex, and Izoni could only do so much. Especially with Izoni preferring to get up close and personal to sting with. At least that was what she thought. But her baby had other plans. ”Here gooooooooes!” Nym’s high-pitched cry came out as the sea surged under them. While she technically didn’t have Surf yet… Muddy Water was in her learnset and was a close enough alternative! And it seemed there was enough debris washed out from the harbor they left that these waters could be grasped by the sweeping move. ”Whoa!” Alicia cried in surprise, quickly veering out of the path as the wave crested and crashed. The wide sweeping move wiped out an immense amount of Nym’s stamina, but its effectiveness could not be denied. ”Great work little one, come back and rest after that!”The Tatsugiri, heaving and huffing as she smiled at the path she cleaved through enemy lines, did not complain one bit as she disappeared back into the safety of the pokeball. The Nihilego, suddenly extremely wary given the wave that crashed through them, were exercising the better part of valor now and breaking away, clearing the way for the two to continue onward. ”Status!?” Alicia called, looking over her shoulder for Josh and his Pokemon. She had no idea Nym was about to pull such a wide AoE out, so of course she didn’t think to warn Josh about it. It was entirely possibly he or his teammates might’ve been tagged by some of it. But if everything was all clear, she suspected they’d have a clear shot to the Dragon’s Den. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4 Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Nym (Tatsugiri) [3/3/4] Condition: Exhausted Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Ulysses' AQUA JET was fast enough that by the time the wave of MUDDY WATER came, they speedster and his mount were well out of range. His Ultra Beasts were not so lucky. Apollo loudly screeched as the dense wave clogged up some of her thrusters, the Celesteela flying around awkwardly using differential thrust to maintain a steady course. Izoni was even more unfortunate; the Naganadel was a direct victim of the friendly fire, getting mud all over her wings and substantially weighing her down. Looking like she could barely fly at this rate, it was enough for Josh to pull the plug on her presence, withdrawing her.
After all, flight surface contamination was a condition that did not require language to communicate. While the wave of MUDDY WATER was not ground-type in nature, Josh wondered if it had Ground-type properties, what with how much it had inhibited his Ultra Beasts.
Alicia was right, though; they did have a straight shot to the raging whirlpool that surrounded the Dragon's Den. Or was the whirlpool itself the Dragon's Den? Josh was curious. Dragon Pokémon were notoriously hard to find. "Do you think the whirlpool's a warp to a zone full of dragon Pokémon?" Josh asked Alicia as Ulysses' strong tail propelled the duo toward the swirling waters.
