Torino walked the crumbling Nexus streets. She had a smile on her face, a song in her heart, and a Beginner's Breastplate protecting her torso.
She felt invincible.
"There is so much life here!" she said to Girasoli. The pair looked around at the overgrown office buildings, which were topped with tangled gardens in need of a trim.
But there was something beautiful about untamed wilderness. About life springing from nothing and pushing aside the rubbish and dusty memories of the world to make room for itself.
"I see a monkey!" Torino said, pointing to a swinging shape up in one of the rooftop canopies. "We should get a monkey!" she said excitedly.
Torino loved monkeys. She loved their tiny, humanous faces, their grasping hands, and their little tangly tails.
She set off down the street, stopped at an overgrown skyscraper, and climbed through a broken wall. A minute later and she was taking the stairs two at a time on her way to her monkey friends in the sky.

Girasoli stayed silent as the pair climbed upwards. She was different after her stay in Hibernaculum. The combination of evolution, kidnap, subjugation, and then corruption had compounded to dim the once-bright companion to something far more muted.
Perhaps something had been lost in her stay in Hibernaculum.
Perhaps something had been gained.
Either way she had come back changed.
But Torino loved her nonetheless, and Girasoli still held the same energy. The same boundless vigor and dancer's grace. The same glitter in her eyes and spring in her step.
They reached the fourth floor, and Torino had to stop. The staircase ahead was scattered with collapsed concrete. A drip seom somewhere above trickled through the crunching barricade, spreading green slime through the rocks and in a long, streaky slick off the side of the staircase.
"Oh no!" Torino said, frowning at the sight. "How do we get past?"
Girasoli stepped forward and curled a thin, leaf-blade arm through a gap in the rocks. She gripped and heaved and hauled a massive chunk of concrete out of the pile. The rest collapsed around it and the pair clambered through.
"It is so nice to have you back, Girasoli."

Past the blockade and up through the vine and rocks-clogged staircase, Torino found her path blocked again. They were on the second-to-top floor, and a hole in the ceiling spread thick, soporific sunlight across the rocks and crags.
Sunbaked stones formed a chunky staircase up to the ceiling and the inevitable monkeys, but unfortunately for Torino each of the stairs was packed with a tangle of snoozing serpents. Snivy lay like scattered spinach spaghetti, dreaming dreams of slow prey and endless Spring.
Torino looked to Girasoli. "Quiet," she whispered, and she tiptoed forward. Girsoli followed. They stepped lightly up the first step, then the second, and then Torino's Ledger began to sing.
The words came out thick and blackened, as impossible to understand as the redacted words inside the book itself. Trying to understand the spoken words was like trying to hear the former lyrics to a rewritten song. There was a spirit of something there, but no substance. Nothing she could understand.
The Snivy around her stirred. Tired eyes opened, and they squeaked and hissed in alarm at the intruder.
"Run Girasoli!" Torino said, and she took an overlarge step up the concrete staircase.
Vines whipped against her body, ricocheting off her breastplate but tangling around her arms and legs.
Girasoli pirouetted, bladed limbs hacking at the vines and forcing the Snivy back.
"Let us pass," Girasoli said. "You cannot hold us and we will not slow for you."
But the Snivy were set on battle, and for every moment the pair hesitated another green head poked out of the tumbled stones or over the rooftop ledge high above them.
They were surrounded and outnumbered, and the odds were only getting worse by the second.

Respiro peeked through the hole in the concrete wall. The tip of his beak-like mask protruded first, followed by a round yellow eye.
The stairs were covered in snakes. Ivy-snakes, Snivy-snakes. They piled together like roots and lawn clippings, blocking forward progress.
Respiro was following someone. His eagle eye had spotted the shine off her Beginner's Breastplate from his perch near the shrine, and he had hopped down to pursue her up the building. He had seen her during the raid, he thought. Cottoncandy-hair and green, growing things in her footprints.
The strange song caught his ears. It was not scary: in fact, it was rather beautiful. Lulling. It said don't be scared, Respiro and just open your heart. Don't worry about what gets in and - ah! It was Corruption!
The snakes stirred, and attacked the girl.
Thud-thud-thud!
Little footsteps pounded the ground as Respiro vaulted over the mass of Snivy, kicking off twin gouts of fire from his wheeling feet. The flames traced harmless arcs in the air as he landed, embers skidding from his sandals, and the grass-types flinched back from the heat and light.
Respiro was here: but he had no sword to protect the lady!
He waved adamantly at her instead, dancing from foot to foot, and kicked out again at one of the Snivy. The grass snake recoiled from the flames, vine whips slithering, searching for a moment of distraction.

Torino was among the flinching grass-types. She shielded her pale face with vine-slapped hands. As the flash faded, she blinked back friendly tears at the sight of her twice friend. "Oh Respiro! It is so good to see you!" Torino said, before a Snivy slapped her across the neck. "Ouch! That is not nice!" She grabbed the Snivy by its tail and held it up in front of her face. "I know we are fighting but I do not like being hit!"
Snivy bit her hand and Torino screamed.
She threw the Snivy down the stairs.
The serpent tumbled across the concrete and wriggled, righting itself in an instant and slithering back to the fight.
Girsoli spun like a twirled flower between a girl's fingers. Her body shed petals and dim, dusky pollen, which she blended with her bladed limbs. Petal flakes slid through the smoky air like daggers between ribs. Where they touched Snivy, the reptiles hissed and fled. Where they hit the ground they bit deep into the concrete.

It was becoming clear that the Ostellia Wild Pokemon, despite their long imprisonment, were much stronger than those in Asper.
But every snake had a head, and Respiro searched for it among the coils and vines. There: a Snivy who watched, who stood back from the others, whose lashing vines sought no target, but instead conducted the green serpent orchestra.
He went for it. Dagger-like petals sheared chunks of stuffing from his coat as he danced into their midst, steps sparking on concrete. He reached for the leader as a barrier of vines grew up to meet him, tangling his feet, lifting him off the ground. He tried to seize it the way Torino had the other Snivy, and felt it slip away between his fingers.
Now entangled, one arm still outstretched into the mass of Snivy, Respiro was a sorry sight. He turned his beaky head to blink sorrowfully at Torino. Perhaps he should have sent a Pokemon out before this. He was not used to being immobilized.

"Respiro!" Torino called, and she reached for his dangling hand like it was the last of Tantalus' grapes. Just out of her grasp she jumped off a cement block and grasped it, plucking his grasp from the taunting air.
"Let go of him!" she called, and the vines creaked and hissed under their combined weight.
But they did not break.
Now both trainers were dangling in the air. Torino looked up into Respiro's beaky face. She tilted her head sideways to that they were aligned. This was no romantic moment, purely the lure to match the post of a stranger dangling above you. The inbuilt desire to mirror the odd in the world.
Torino grinned.
Beneath them, Girasoli danced along the concrete edges, slicing rebar sparks into the ongoing petal blizzard. She was a danger. A razor-tongued whisper. A promise of violence delivered on a folded slip of velvet.
The Snivy fled from her like leaves before a storm.

The vines grew up, up towards the light. The rooftop above the stairwell, where bright day streaked the corridor like the ghost of a folding fan.
Respiro had thought the entangling mass of greenery was simply the Snivy swarm's Vine Whip, but it was becoming more than that. His and Torino's passive Gardener feature was strengthening it, multiplying it. What had been a curtain became a wall as plant life defied their masters and reached for the sky.
The two trainers were caught up in its fingers. Ascending, in a way. Escaping, in a way.
Respiro breathed hard through his mask as vines closed around his head.

Torino held Respiro's hand tight as the greenery engulfed them. The rising pillar of vine and bud surged around them, mixing and multiplying at a fantastical rate.
Blooms and fruits budded and grew in the botanical monstrosity, and Torino felt a flower press against her cheek and mark her with a smear pollen.
As their creation rose past the roofline bright sunlight shone right through fibrous coccoon, turning the vines, fruit and flowers into a stained-grass wrapping.
"I am stuck!" she said to Respiro. "I hope Girasoli can save us!"

The petals sliced away at Sleeping Beauty's prison, but not fast enough to save her from slumber.
Respiro felt Torino's grasp slacken and tightened his grasp, lacing his fingers with hers. Then abruptly, the pressure was gone.
The girl fell apart in a flurry of hexagons, like spiraling snowflakes. She was gone, vines growing eagerly to fill her place, clamoring for the light she'd left behind.
Respiro knew he was next.
But what could he do? He could struggle, and did. His feet were wrapped too tight to kick, his empty hands without a weapon or a friend. Had he been a foolish Rook, to come so far all on his own with no plan in mind? Who fought so many Pokémon at the same time, heedless of the odds?

They reached the building, sprinted up the inner stairs, and were soon back at the site of battle.
Torino stopped just short of her slithering assailants.
"One at a time!" Torino demanded, and she pointed at the closest Snivy. "You can fight us first."
The Snivy, only just noticing her, slapped off the ground with its vines and flew straight at Girasoli with a viscious hit.
Girasoli was ready. Radiant and stalwart. She cut the Snivy out of the air with a single swipe.
But they came more quickly now. Two at a time. Two swipes.
Then three. Two swipes and a spinning kick.
Then more. A stream of scales and hissing leaves. Girasoli and Torino backed down the stairs, letting the enemies come to them.
Torino clenched her fist. She could feel the phantom pressure of her friend's hand clutched with hers. Where was Respiro? Was he trapped up ahead?

He flew up the stairs, kicking off the railing and pivoting off the air itself. He cleared floors in single bounds, catching upper flights on the tips of his fingers and swinging himself to the next.
Whoooosh! Back through the hole in the concrete. Patpatpatpat! sandaled footsteps echoing on petal-strewn pavement.
Back! Finally!
Heaving for breath, he waved at Torino from the lower landing to show he was all right, then met her at the bottom of the stairs. The tangle of vines which had snuffed the lives from both of their bodies had sagged and fallen into a messy heap. Snivy were scattered around: instinctively, Respiro looked for the leader again.
<Here to rub it in?>
The grass snake pulled itself out of the tangle of vines. It looked exhausted. <Everyone but me is unconscious. We concede.>
Respiro pulled out his Golden Pokeball. The light glinted off the metal like a riverbed in sunlight. Now that he was here, he wanted to catch a Snivy!
It saw the capsule and gave a slow nod. <I see. If those are your terms, I'll go quietly.> Respiro did not pretend to understand the little serpent's words, but when he threw the ball, the Snivy disappeared safely inside. He hoped that meant less of them would gather in swarms like this in the future.
Pleased with himself, Respiro jumped in victory, seizing Torino's hands and inviting her to celebrate with him!

Torino danced with Respiro, jumping up and down in victory and snake-less sunlight.
"We did it!" she said, and laughed at the thought that they were both knocked out by the grasp of a thousand slithering vines. It was so funny to think that some plants were hungry enough to break down even living people!
There was a beep behind her.
Torino turned and saw a timer ticking down. This was her chance to catch the Snivy!
"Oh! Sorry Respiro," she said, and slipped from his grip like a Spring breeze. She tossed her Golden Pokeball at the flashing Snivy and caught a perfect copy. "Yes! I'm going to use this to make my perfect chimera!" She beamed, daydreaming about Type:Null for a fleeting moment.
"Let's go to the roof!" she said, and started to climb.
