Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

It was one of the tutorials every new player experienced after getting their first partner Pokemon. It appeared in most games and the later installments made them mandatory to the point of annoyance. So it was a relief for Aero that this tutorial was optional, and it let her immediately head to the Great Wilds after finishing the first three. So it was a surprise that she came back here just to clear all of them before she could forget it. In this case, she saw her in-game Mom again and was forced to go through a long demonstration to the point she almost fell asleep with her console still on. Thankfully once she got the Golden Poke Ball, all that was left for her was to catch a Pokemon. Granted, she had a feeling the Pokemon she would encounter might be too weak for her taste. So she might either give it away to a trade shop if she caught it or use one of those features in the shrines. However, all that was left was a catching partner. Let's just hope someone who answered her call from the notice she made was either nice enough to stay in the game for long or a newbie who didn't know how to catch a Pokemon themselves. Respiro

A long time ago, on a server far far away, he (a young and bright-eyed Rook!) had done all of the Tutorials. Back with his first starter, when the game was new and so was he. On reset, Respiro had not bothered to re-tread the same paths he once had with his Chimchar. The wound was still fresh, and he'd fled for the deep forests of Asper without giving this new Mamá, Profesor, or Rival a chance to start again. He was not back to start again. He had not seen Aero's request on the "nearby" tracker either. He simply saw Aero herself, and impulsively, immediately, veered to join her. "!!" the little fighter said, clearly excited. He leapt and twirled, sandals skidding in the dust. "!!" He remembered her! He remembered reaching for her and Nihilego, remembered the song of the flaming crocodile who'd summoned the three of them back from the creature's toxic spell. Had she seen him? Did she know him?

She hadn't got any pings from her notice, but she noticed something familiar about the older player. She squinted her eyes to take a closer look before she gasped. "Hey! You're the masked guy I saw back in the Harbor from the raid!" She declared. "Glad you're okay! Are you here to help me do this tutorial?" Speaking of which, they would suddenly hear some small footsteps coming towards them. She turned around to see a small light brown puppy approaching them. "No way... A Lillipup?!" Aero dropped her jaw at the sight of its appearance. "Oh, man... I was hoping to exchange it since the Pokemon here are weak... But..." She hummed a little louder. "It is so FREAKIN' CUTE!!! I want to keep it. But I already have Fufu with me..." After a while, she groaned in dismay and took out her Fuecoco. "Fufu, use Ember..." While her Fuecoco followed her order to attack the Lillipup, Aero turned to Respiro and asked, "Do you want the Lillipup, too?"

It turned out to be a Tutorial. "You kids need help catching a Pokémon?" an NPC in green hospital scrubs ran up, waving at the pair. He was wearing a surgery mask, but Respiro recognized him as the surgeon he'd delivered Dra. Bunya's package to at the hospital last month. What was he doing here? Shouldn't he be in the operating room, performing heart transplants? "First, you have to weaken it!" Respiro skipped backwards as Aero's Fuecoco sprayed an Ember attack at the little terrier that had just bounded up. The dog keeled over, fainting immediately. "Wasn't that easy? Now, throw your Golden Pokeball to catch it!" Respiro ignored the random surgeon. He could guess what the man was saying, even if he didn't understand the words, and he already knew how to catch a Pokémon. Instead, he pointed at Aero's Fuecoco, yellow eyes widening. He jumped to get her attention, gesturing with his arms to indicate a much larger Pokémon. Hadn't he seen a Skeledirge back in the Harbor? How had it gotten so small again?! "Throw your golden Pokeball to catch it!" prompted the NPC again, apparently stuck in a dialogue loop. Annoyed, Respiro chucked the capsule at the poor doggie, then chucked another one at the surgeon. He should go back to the hospital!

She shouldn't underestimate the difference between the mainline games and UNOVR's catching system. Her Fuecoco was unclassed, so he shouldn't have been strong enough to deal with any tough Pokemon like her Skeledirge. But that one Ember was enough to knock out a poor Lillipup in one hit. Now she really needs to be careful when facing weaker wild Pokemon regardless if she evolved them or not. Anyways, another tutorial NPC just appeared to Respiro and as she expected, he was not as helpful as Mom's long demonstration. Without a word, she took out her Poke Ball and regretfully tossed the ball to it. After that, she turned to the masked player, noticing how disturbed he looked upon seeing her Fuecoco. "Oh, him? Don't worry, that's actually my second Fuecoco. Coco is still in my ball and I just took him out to make sure I didn't overkill it. Guess that failed, huh?" Aero sheepishly chuckled.

Just like getting your medical degree," said the surgeon. The capsule bounced off the NPC's shoulder and landed on the ground. Respiro pattered toward to pick it up again, watching the NPC turn around (his job complete) and pick his way back out of the Tall Grass. Respiro turned back to Aero, cocking his head to the side. Unfortunately, he couldn't understand her explanation for how her beautiful Skeledirge had turned back into a little Fuecoco. Was it a special de-evolution item? Had she re-started the game, like Respiro had? Was she some kind of ultra-specific breeder with many different Fuecoco, Crocalor and Skeledirge? He'd never know! Before he went on his way, Respiro decided to give Aero a gift! He patted down his pockets, then pulled out a purple feather he'd found earlier in the Ostellia Nexus. He wasn't sure what a Pokémon it was from, but the color reminded him of Aero's armor (twilight and wine grape) and he liked it. He offered it to her, shyly, as if offering a flower. Then he turned and raced away, away, back into the world with all it had to discover!
