OUT OF THE GAME Once upon a time, Aspen Smith was a dreamer. And much like many dreamers, when she was young, she had a spectacular plan for her life. A dream to become a scholar in the world of fairytales. A folktale researcher - anything to understand the stories her mother would read to her at night, full of dragons and knights, gods and mortals. It was that dream that carried her all throughout high school to graduation - her love of fables, and the desire to keep that dream alive, clinging to it as if it were her only true hope in the world.
But then, after she graduated and everyone asked what she was going to do next, when she excitedly told those she was close to her plans for life, she was met with stares of...confusion. Shock. Amusement. 'That doesn't sound practical'. 'Why don't you go for a real job?' 'Something like that won't pay the bills.' ‘Why do you like fairytales? That's kinda immature, isn't it?’ 'You should do something that actually makes money.' 'You're much more capable than something like that.'
‘Do something that will actually put food on the table - not just a stupid fantasy.’
This resulted in a sense of shame and guilt burrowing itself deep into her chest - this was something she loved. This was something she really wanted to do, and it was...silly? It wasn't practical? It was immature? Was there something wrong with a dream like that? (Was there something wrong with her, for wanting to follow such a dream? There must be, for why would everyone be telling her these things?) So, she shelved her childish hobbies. Pushed away her love of fables and fantasy under the feelings of shame and guilt. If everyone thought it was stupid and foolish, maybe it wasn't worth pursuing.
Once upon a time, Aspen Smith was a dreamer. But dreamers don't survive in the real world, right? Working at a gas station to pay the bills was...well, it was something to pay the bills after she decided to move out of her parents house. Something to keep food on the table and the lights on in her studio apartment. Something to fill the growing dullness within, the feeling of a stalemate reached with no proper ending. Some nights, when sleep always seems to elude her, when the moon hangs lazily under a neon glow, Aspen will look up at the dull, dull coloured ceiling, and burrow down any feelings of guilt, shame, immaturity that pop up. She had a dream, long ago, but that dream was too impractical, too immature Besides, she wanted this, didn't she? A life of routine, no matter how draining? Actually doing something with her life rather than a foolish dream? ...She's happy, isn't she?
Days and years go by in the blink of an eye. Her skin doesn't even feel like her own anymore - it's just another uniform to wear for her daily routine. Get up. Go to work, go get groceries, go pay rent. Sleep. A cog in an endless machine, a endless cycle to be repeated.
Until one day, while ringing up a regular's order during another night shift, they mentioned a game. A Pokemon game. Now, Aspen wasn't a Pokemon kid growing up - personally, she'd say she was more of an Animal Crossing person herself, finding a wimsy in the talking animals and building her own town - from the Gamecube to the 3DS, she had played every Animal Crossing game, but never a Pokemon game.
But, as she looked at the back of the game she got from AMZN on a bored whim based on a comment from just another customer, she spotted two little words:
Resurrect Legends.
Something about those two words sparks a feeling she hadn’t felt in so long until now, in this brief moment. Curiosity and a spark of…excitement.
What do they mean by legends? What legends are in this world? What myths, fables? What are the stories behind them? What do others think of them? What impact do they hold on the world itself? How can you resurrect a fable, bring it to life?
A desire to explore and learn, to talk about fables and folklore again, took root - because fables and fairy tales may be childish things, but maybe...maybe she wouldn't be stared at for talking about them in a video game? (Maybe there wasn't something wrong with her?)
And before she knew it, she had purchased a Worldscreen on AMZN Prime, next day shipping.
Personality summary (out of game) - Tired. Very tired, and this translates into movement and accent - this shows itself in sluggish movements and dark circles under eyes, and a slight habit of yawning between words if she gets on-game late at night. - Curious as an extension of intelligence and a desire to learn, though tries to hide this curiosity out of embarrassment. Despite this attempt, this trait occasionally shows itself in her often losing track of time when in game, or her sudden interest and intrigue when learning about something she never learned before. - Mainly due to her job and constant routine, Aspen is quite efficient, which can bleed into UNOVR - often planning and being organised in her notes, often planning ahead and multitasking on certain efforts. - Really likes fairytales, fables and folklore from different cultures - however, she feels a sense of shame and guilt in liking them due to them not being seen as 'mature', nor 'profitable' for a career choice. While she feels a little more open in talking about them in UNOVR, the shame is still present, resulting in a effort to try and deny these feelings in the first place. - This effort of denial bleeds into a more perfectionist trait. In a effort to trying to show that she's a capable person, that she's mature and a good adult, this trait primarily manifests through a meticulousness in her job, and internally chastising herself for falling short of a positive outcome. This perfectionism bleeds into UNOVR through wanting to learn as much as she can about Pokemon, even though she has no experience with the franchise, trying to learn as much as she can, resulting in her potentially being seen as a workaholic. - Doesn't have that good of self-perception; mainly presents itself as a feeling of discomfort in her own skin. This discomforting feeling bleeds into the sense of shame and embarrassment, as it makes her feel that she isn't capable enough to deal with these feelings in a mature way.
- Out of UNOVR, when at her job, she goes through the motions of work, though to a very meticulous degree. But now that the desire to look into UNOVR is there, the routine changes and she plays primarily after work, explaining her common online times of afternoon to twilight hours.
What does the game mean to them? - Wants to learn about the fables, folklore and legends relating to the world of UNOVR. VERY drawn in by the 'resurrect legends' element on the box, and wants to learn how the legends can be resurrected, among other associations. This also results in her connecting with fables and folklore again, albeit with a bit of embarrassment and shame attached to it - maybe her talking about them won't be so bad in a video game? - She never really played Pokemon before, so something like this combined with interest in folklore has immediately piqued her interest. She wants to explore the world and figure out the lore within. | INSIDE THE GAMEcareful, highly curious. Marchen, when compared to Aspen, is somewhat different from the exhausted gas station worker in real life. Much like the animal that she seems to mirror, she appears quite curious, with wanting to figure out the folklore elements of the world of UNOVR - the myths, legends and fables that have yet to be explored, and the Pokemon attached to them. Surprisingly, she also knows a lot of real life fables and folklore as well - and finds interest in puzzling out what Pokemon were potentially inspired by what specific myth or fable, or even comparing notes with others who may be researching Legendaries or Mythicals - if only to learn more about this world she had heard nothing about until now. Commonly active during the afternoon or nighttime hours of the day, the owl-like woman often appears quite tired when online, if not through her body movements, then her almost tired-sounding voice.
Perhaps during the quiet nights, when the moon hangs lazily in the night sky, you might even spot her somewhere quiet, just reading aloud to their Pokemon in a soft tone of voice - fairytales and stories they haven't read or enjoyed in what seems like a long time.
Personality Summary (in game) - Really seems like she wants to learn about Pokemon, mainly due to a lack of knowledge. Knowledgeable when it comes to fables and myths, and may make connections to different ones when talking about a certain Pokemon - though there's this underlying sense of nervousness and awkwardness to it. - Really wants to figure out the Lore behind the game, and the myths, fables and legends that surround the world of UNOVR - including these Legendary and Mythical Pokemon. A part of her Journal is dedicated to this, with scribbles and notes on the different lore she hears about the legends. - Likes to exchange her notes with any fellow erudites. She will get invested in learning about something new. - Also tends to take notes in her Journal of the new things she learns about certain Pokemon she catches and mechanics, if for no other reference than her own. - Careful nature primarily comes into play when it comes to explaining her focus on certain elements of the game.
Similarities and Differences - Much like her IRL self, Marchen can appear quite tired at times, through movement and speech - this is much more apparent when she works long shifts and immediately logs on. - As well, her efficiency and curiosity are visible as well, alongside her more perfectionist side, though this appears more as a 'workaholic' mentality, as she tries to note down everything about certain Pokemon. - The main difference is in her willingness to share elements of her interests - fairy tales and fables. She's a bit more willing to talk about them in game than in real life. - Another main difference is her visual body language; closed off and sluggish in reality, contrasted with more open, though careful movements in game.
