A part of Arthur wondered what it would be like to be able to skid through the sand slopes without running the risk of burning the soles of his shoes. He knew that this was a game, but he wasn't sure if there was durability with the Running Shoes he wore - and besides, he felt like there was a distinct possibility of him tripping on the way down, which wouldn't kill him (right?) but it would hurt for sure, tumbling down onto the sandy ground, getting everywhere.
The sun was setting in the horizon - an opportune time for him to be looking around without the fear of the sun burning him to a crisp. If he was already in danger of that before, dampened by the protection of Kindler - he was in plenty more danger now, with the curse and only Beta Tester to keep his skin from becoming fried. In this time and temperature, the exploration was much more bearable, and he figured that he should get a better idea of the Pokemon that had moved in here since the raid. He had yet to present a Pokemon to Professor Ash, after all, or so the other older players called her.
Banko was on standby, standing beside him as he tried to focus on whether there was anything walking around that they could approach. Zoro was on his shoulder - almost imperceptible the more darkness crept on them, but he figured that he could try to get his newer Pokemon better.
❝See anything?❞
<Nothin' tryin' to hunt us if that's what ya mean.> Banko supplied, remembering the few encounters they had with Ultra Beasts before they were quelled.

❝We can always choose not to engage if it looks dangerous.❞
The Mudsdale looked thoughtful. It seemed uncertain what his trainer's goal was for this particular excursion. The team was quite big, and it looked like Arthur didn't have any concrete plans to look for specific Pokemon to add to the team. Nonetheless, the ground type figured that getting a lay of the land was generally not time wasted, especially as there were whispers of building a settlement somewhere in the area. Something that reminded him of his previous home, before he was handed to his current trainer. He vaguely remembered clipped moments of hooves clopping on grass, layered cries of fellow Mudbray, waiting to be given to trainers who need their services.
<Can't believe that there's more sand here than back on the island.> Zoro remarked. <I thought that the beach was already too much sand...> the Zorua was plenty content not setting his tiny paws on the ground, though he was not looking forward to be asked to fight if he had to.

Zoro caught on first.
The tiny fox quickly tapped on his trainer's shoulder to alert that there was someone watching them. Arthur didn't make a show of moving his head around quickly in a panic, but he tense slightly before taking a deep breath. He could jump on Banko and command him to use Earthquake or a move with a similar effect, but he wasn't sure of the effectivity of the move in a place full of sand. Instead, he looked at his peripheral vision to the Zorua and mouthed, Where?
<Southwest.>
Giving little time for whatever was stalking them to react, the trainer whirled around and raised his mist hand; fingers splayed, ready to charge a beam from his palm, he would gathered light blue energy from the Hibernal Heart to launch an chilling sphere-like projectile infused with mist. The sphere, while not big, moved fast and exploded on contact with the ground, sending a flurry of sand up in the air and freezing some of it on contact. This created a small formation of ice shards that jutted from the sand, which were already beginning to melt in the heat.
Arthur let out an exhausted grunt. The sudden attack with almost no wind-up took more out of him than he thought, other than the fact that he only really had this attack in theory but never really tried it out before. Silence fell on the trio as they waited for something to come out. The trainer expected something big, but instead, two circles of light reflected back at them, reminiscent of a cat's eyes.
As it turned out, the silhouette that appeared behind the ice was alarmingly familiar.
❝You...you are..?❞

No, that wasn't Solgaleo. This cat's coat was hard to see as the sun continued to set, bringing the night sky in full view. It wasn't dazzling white, easily mistaken for a colorless Pokemon. He supposed that this was one of the cats they saved in the dungeon, which so happened to be the same species as the one the Legendary took when he was weakened.
<Parley! Please, I mean no harm.> the cat's voice was surprisingly deep for his size. Not exactly like Solgaleo's, but it carried that heavy gravitas that this Pokemon was wiser than he appeared. It wasn't like his Kricketot, who simply had an old-fashioned way of speaking. There was a certain weight that Arthur couldn't describe; a confusion setting in, a lowered hand.
<You, boy, do you recognize me?>
A pause, a wonder on how to react. ❝No, I mistook you for another Pokemon I knew.❞
In the midst of their conversation, the cat approached cautiously and stopped at a certain distance where they didn't need to yell to properly hear each other. There was no wind, nothing to carry their words away or drown them out.
<...I suppose that would be a miracle if you did; I would've called it fate.> he did not lower his guard, still ready to pounce, or perhaps feint and make an escape. <Can you tell me what happened here?>
❝There is not much I can tell. By the time I got here, it was already like this.❞
For some reason, this response affected the cat. Shock? Denial? He trembled, <But...that can't be...>

How much of this was to be trusted? How much of it was made up for the sake of a little flavor in his day?
❝What do you remember?❞
The fire cat looked down on the sand, or maybe his tiny little paws. He looked solemn, doubtful. <I...I can't say. It isn't this. It isn't sand.> there was a bit a growl mixed in his tone; an anger wanting to be directed at something, but there was nothing suitable to burn. <Does it look like this everywhere?>
In truth, Arthur did not know a lot of details on how Ostellia looked like. Nonetheless, he shook his head. ❝Further that way the buildings have been overtaken by big plants.❞ he didn't know if that was technically any better than the desert. It did not really put the cat at ease, it only really proved that there was a great passage of time since he had stepped on here, and that probably wasn't far from the truth. The trainer had forgotten the specific details about the fall of the League and whatever, but he did remember at the top of his head that the event happened years and years ago in-game. How long had the wild Pokemon been trapped under there? Was he wild at all, or was he...did he belong to someone, an NPC perhaps, a long time ago?
<...I see.> he looked deep in thought. <I remember endless torment before it was suddenly broken, and then I was running. There were many others with me, finding the light. The world opened to us outside that cave, but...
Not all are like me. They did not question, they did not feel that something was missing. I envy them. They can be truly free. I, on the other hand, am lost, wondering.>

<I don't like this.> Zoro muttered under his breath. Earlier, Arthur had put his other hand up; a gesture to Banko not to move forward and attack. He had since lowered his hand, but had not entirely relaxed his stance. It didn't seem like the cat was hostile, but it did not mean that he wasn't dangerous. After all, it seemed like the cat could evolve into Solgaleo, or could be hiding another form for all he knew (or maybe that was just that particular lion's gimmick).
❝Then what do you plan to do now?❞
The cat did not reply immediately, but then he spread his paws out, lowering his head, eyes narrowing. <When in doubt, return to the familiar.> he muttered, <You are a trainer, correct?>
<Oh it's on.>
❝Wait,❞ he gently held the Zorua down on his shoulder before he could jump off. ❝Not right now. I'll equip you into a class later.❞
<Hrmph. Fine.>
If Gou were here, he might've used him to spar with the cat. The size different didn't matter, because he felt like this Pokemon had the edge on them in experience and power. He pulled out a Poke Ball and tossed it in the air. ❝Kanya.❞

Out of the Poke Ball came a tall and slender masked grass cat, stretching his arms upward and yawning. <Ohhh boy. Okay, battle time?> Kanya then looked at his opponent, who reminded him of when he was much smaller. <...I'm fighting them? Seems more like foxy's speed, don't nya think?>
With the Meowscarada's attention on his trainer, he didn't notice the wild cat charge up a Flamethrower in the form of flames bursting from his mouth. What impressed Arthur was how fast the attack came as well as the volume of the flames - it was also an intentional miss, shooting not far from the taller cat's head; a flurry of wind singing the edges of his fur. Kanya blinked and turned back to face his opponent, who was licking his paw as a taunt.
<It seems you still lack basic duel etiquette, little one.>
The Meowscarada snarled, but had a cocky grin on his face. <Ya really set me up against a fire type? I'll take that as a vote of confidence.> stretching his claws, he first sharpened and elongated them, scratching them together as a form of Hone Claws to increase his attack power. On the other hand, the Litten let his eyes glow red, making a matching colored, shadowy face appear above him. This clearly spooked both Zoro and Banko - the latter neighed and raised his hooves; Arthur had to calm him down. Kanya's overconfidence was not fazed, however, and he moved in with a direct assault. With Quick Attack, he moved quickly and used the encroaching darkness to his advantage, though there was barely any debris scattered around to use as platforms or hide against. It would purely be speed that kept him out of sight.
The Litten tried to follow him with his eyes, but ultimately couldn't dodge fast enough when the Meowscarada came in using Slash, slamming sharpened claws directly at the smaller cat's body.

The attack sent the Litten flying, but true to the nature of cats, he was able to fix his position upright so that he could land on the ground with his paws instead of his back. However, it only took a moment's pause for the wild Pokemon to show that he was struggling. A boosted direct attack was just too much to handle for his size. He didn't let that deter him though. As Kanya moved in for another attack - and Kyukon was thinking of telling him to stay back - the Litten's eyes glowed translucent red; an aura coated his body and made his fur stand up on end. This was transferred over to the Meowscarada, who suddenly stopped in his tracks and looked completely dazed.
❝Kanya?❞
The masked cat whipped his head to his trainer's direction before snarling. Specifically, he was looking at the Zorua on his shoulder, which was of a similar shape to what he was just fighting, never mind the fact that he had been facing the correct direction not a moment before. Glowing claws were extended as the Meowscarada slowly moved forward to attack, barely any grace in his steps. Arthur cursed, quickly trying to get Kanya's Poke Ball so that he could return him and cure the confusion, but he fumbled at a crucial moment.
❝Banko, Iron Defense!❞
When the claws struck down, they hit something akin to steel, but it was actually the Mudsdale's hardened head. Letting out a deep exhale, he lowered his head to position himself to be able to shove the cat away, but this ended up hitting the requirements for Counter, becoming a powerful attack on its own. A boosted attack that was now going to hit twice as much? He wasn't surprised that after Kanya was sent to the ground, he couldn't stand up.
<Ughhh...everything hurts...>
<That was short.> Zoro commented, appearing to be unimpressed. Arthur decided not to reply and returned the Meowscarada so he could rest. He already felt like he was going to get an earful of complaining later. As for the Litten, well, did he need Banko to finish him off..?
He approached the wild cat and crouched down. The Litten mainly used whatever energy he had left to stand. ❝Did you actually want to be captured again?❞
<I don't think I belong here. I find that a human's presence is...soothing.>

Then there was only one thing to do. For now, at least.
He pulled out his Golden Poke Ball and presented it to the Litten. ❝I'll let you do the honors, unless you can't lift your paw right now.❞
<Heh.> instead of raising a paw as Arthur expected, he just let his forehead gently touch the button, activating the mechanism to bring him inside. Converted into energy, his form disappeared from the sand, the ball in his hand barely shaking before a soft click was heard.
The trainer wasn't sure about this. He had wanted to find a Pokemon to give to the Professor, but...he admired the Litten. It reminded him of Solgaleo, but also not. He kind of wanted to see if there were things he remembered about Ostellia that the game hadn't mentioned before. He would give it more thought, but for now, he would need to heal his Pokemon. Kanya sorely needed it.
