Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

You arrive at the Pokemon Lab on the edge of a new frontier— miles of unexplored wilderness that hide secrets, corrupted Pokémon, and unknown potential. As you are teleported from the starting screen into the Lab, you don't know where to step, much less move. Books are stacked in haphazard piles on the floor, beakers of bubbling black fluid balanced precariously atop them. Styrofoam containers of old takeout are piled up in the garbage bin. Strange machines built of PVC piping and salvaged materials are scattered around like a car show gone wrong, some clearly still in-progress, some in the process of being rebuilt. A vaguely human-shaped specter of darkness is crouched on top of the desk, looking for something. "Where is it... where is it... NYA-HA!" The apparition straightens up triumphantly, fitting an oversized monocle into one glowing eye, and scooches forward so that her shadowy legs now dangle off the front of the desk like a kid in a high chair. "There we nyare! Hiya, nyewb! I'm Dr. Bunya! Don't nyask nyabout the whole shadow thing. It'll wear off." The region's newly-appointed Pokemon Professor seems more like a (cursed?) stray cat that wandered into someone's house than any kind of working professional, but you don't see an alternative. "Sit nyanywhere! You're here for a starter Pokenyan, right?" Your eyes are drawn to the display case behind her, where 27 sealed Pokeballs wait quietly behind the glass. System Admin:Bunyaa makes a show of shuffling some papers on her desk. "I got some questions to ask nya first! Heheheh..." Her body language changes from gleeful to panicked as she seems unable to find the relevant manual. "...Eh, I'll just wing it," you hear her mutter under her breath before turning back to you, chipper as before. "Nyall righty! When you're ready, say 'fire!'" Marchen: REPLY TO START THE INTERVIEW!

For a brief moment, one could see Marchen's eyes light up, as she appears to squint at them, attempting to read the titles or their contents if they weren't already covered and hidden by careful placements, before a triumphant 'nya-HA!' caught her attention, prompting the wing-like ears atop her head to flutter in surprise. The mention of this 'shadow-thing' wearing off put a bit of her mind at ease for Dr. Bunya - but a small hint of nervousness remained. Was it nerves of entering a new experience for the first time? Panic of already feeling out of her league? A feeling of unease and discomfort of already feeling real in such a simple, small space, a gosling in a family of ducklings- No. 'I'm capable. I can handle this, I can handle this. Anyone else can handle this, so I can too. I have too. its just a game.' She nodded regardless at the question of obtaining a starter Pokemon, and soon, her mind began to wander, eyes being drawn to the...what were they called again - Pokeballs - sealed in the glass case. What were the starter Pokemon like? What would they do? What were they able to do, what made this series so interesting-? A wing would flutter at hearing the mutter of 'winging' questions to be asked, mind snapping back into focus as Marchen noted a request. Say 'fire' to start the questions, whenever she was ready. ...Was she ready? (She had to be ready. There was no other time to be ready.) Movements a bit sluggish from a hint of exhaustion, she carefully adjusted into a more comfortable sitting position and smiled. "All right, doctor," She began. "Fire away."

A dessert island? Like a island made out of dessert? Or did she mean deserted? Like stories where a hero must travel through great ordeals and fantasy worlds in order to explore and defeat the evil- No. Stop. You're getting sidetracked with something silly again. Regardless, the owl woman answered. "I don't really have a lot of friends - don't really have the time to make any when working. I suppose I wouldn't mind getting trapped with a co-worker though." Who knows - maybe a candy island might be a fun work-bonding experience! The second question made her pause for a brief moment. Is she a person? Well, of course she was a person. She walked, she talked, she breathed - but the question of how? How did she know she was a person? How did she know she wasn't just a nutcracker brought to life, or a ghost wearing the skin of a self she wanted to be. There was a slight discomfort of her own skin, gooseflesh prickling against the cold air of the lab. She ignored it. Focus. Be capable of this at least. What do you want to say. "I suppose that people know they exist by the works they leave behind. By the words they leave behind in this world - conversations, for instance." Not to mention transcripts of stories retold long ago, fairy books in different colours, fables and creatures adapted over time. "Since we're having a conversation right now, between the two of us," She motioned between the both of them. "My words are left behind here with you, in this moment. Therefore, I am a person. At least, I think I am." Lying, meanwhile...was a bit easier to answer. "I don't think about lying. Not to others - it feels...wrong, trying to obscure the truth from the people around me. Not to mention the stories attached to the topic!" Her wing-ears began to flutter as her mind conjured names. Pinocchio, The Boy Who Cried Wolf - not to mention other many more fables and fairytales all about the dangers of lying, of what may happen if you lie, the urge to name more fables and explain so much more was right on the tip of her tongue- Stop. You answered the question. A spark of shame sizzled where the desire once was, and the thought was quickly discarded.
