Tall Grass.
She stared at it in the distance, the sight being quite obvious. Was this area truly designed with the intent to teach new players about how to catch pokemon? It seemed almost bizarre. There was no one around.
And yet, she knew that if she stepped out into the grass someone would appear out of nowhere. That was the trope that happened in the older games, right? Someone coming out of literally nowhere to teach her how to catch pokemon for the 15th time in the past 4 years.
She suddenly began to doubt her own eyes, scanning the area around her. "Uh, hello?" Laguna spoke out to nobody in particular as if that would somehow solve her budding questions. "Someone's around here, right? You know, you don't have to do this, whoever you are! I know how this works by now!"

Big Bee was looking for the catching tutorial. As little as he wanted to run through it, it was his job as a customer experience expert to know what the players were going through. "It's here, right?" he said, stepping into a patch of grass.
Nothing happened.
"Ugh. Okay. C0D13! I want to do the catching tutorial!" As he called out his wish, there was a flash of blue and pink and his digital fairy godmother transported him to the massive patch of grass that Laguna happened to be standing near. The auto-party feature kicked in, and Big Bee blinked at the new trainer. "Hey! I'm Big Bee. Looks like we're going to do a team tutorial. Is this your first time?" he asked, laughing nervously. It was fine. She looked new so she probably wanted to do the tutorial anyway.
"Greetings trainers! It looks like you were about to enter the Tall Grass, but did you know that there are many dangers within?" He felt a gentle beam scan his body, and Codie piped up again. "I see that you both have your starter Pokemon from the lab. So how about I show you how to catch a hew one in the wild?"
Big Bee felt himself move towards he grass, as if he were on rails. The thick foliage consumed the trio, waist high and rustling like a bag of potato chips.

Laguna visibly jumped as someone else simply appeared nearby and spoke. She had been right after all! This was the tutorial bit! She was quick to sigh, shaking her head with a soft smile. Big Bee was kind of a cute name if she was being honest. "I'm Laguna. Uh, if you mean in the beta, sure. But I've played Pokemon like, dozens of times. I know how this wo-"
And that's when COD13 spoke. What exactly was he, anyway? The mascot? In truth, she probably should have paid more attention to the marketing for the game. Laguna had kind of just jumped into it as soon as she realized it was a full-dive VR, the fact that it was Pokemon only made that a better experience. She willingly walked further into the grass as she was moved along, but she wasn't exactly excited.
"I mean, even if I say no, you're going to show us anyways. So I guess." Laguna shrugged as she spoke to COD13. "I mean, is there anything actually new about it this time?"

"Oh dope! I played a few of them as a kid," Big Bee lied. In truth he'd bounced off the games as a kid, preferring sports, but had needed to play them all before starting work at Hydance. He'd crammed them like he was studying for a test, playing for hours at a time and only breaking to test himself on game content. "My favorite is gen 5, so when I saw we were in UNOVR I was so excited. What about you?"
"What do you mean this time?" Codie replied. "Have you completed the tutorial before?" Beams shot out, checking Laguna's character profile and history. "I see no record of a prior catching tutorial." As Codie devoted some processing power to the conundrum, there was a tremendous shaking and shuddering in the grass behind him.
Big Bee could see something coming towards them through the field, but was locked into position and couldn't run away or access his Pokemon. "Over there! Something's coming!" he shouted, pointing at the shape in the grass. It dodged back and forth, moving erratically before bursting from the grass! The striped ball of brown and white fur grwled, baring adorable little teeth, and Zigzagoon threw itself at Codie!
The digital assistant blinked out of existence, and Zigzagoon collided with Big Bee, knocking him to the ground.
"Ah! I warned you! Dammit Codie!"
The Porygon blinked back in next to Laguna. "It seems that your friend has drawn the attention of a wild Pokemon!" he buzzed happily. "This is the perfect opportunity to learn about catching."

"O-oh! I uh, really enjoyed Alpha Sapphire growing up! I've played a lot of the older games, but I put soooo many hours into that one!" Laguna's smile was incredibly wide, excited to have someone with who she could simply talk to about video games. Granted, it was in a video game, but outside of it, there was nobody else nerdy around to talk to!
As COD13 presumably checked her profile with his strange laser beams, she just rolled her eyes. It seemed as if there would be no explaining anything to this silly machine thing. "No, like, other games-"
Big Bee suddenly shouted, and all of a sudden a Zigzagoon launched out at him through COD13! "Ah!" Laguna exclaimed already reaching for her Pokeball. "So um, do we get to do the catching tutorial this time? Like, do I get to fight?"
"This is the catching tutorial! Not the battling tutorial!" COD13 said, causing all possible excitement that Laguna had to fade right away.
"Ah, right." Her starter's Pokeball fell back to her waist as she let out a soft sigh.
"For this tutorial, we will be simulating an actual combat." COD13 began, a beam of light forming a smaller Porygon as if COD13 itself was the trainer, and the small simulation of Porygon was his Pokemon.
"First, we-"
Laguna immediately began to zone out, quickly moving over to try and pull Big Bee away from the eventual conflict and back up onto his feet. "Are you okay?"

Laguna pulled Big Bee free of the attacking Zigzagoon, and the generated mini-C0D13 swooped in to deliver a quick shock to the wild Pokemon, drawing its attention away from the scratched up trainer.
"Ugh, thanks for the save. That angry bath mat came out of nowhere!" He grinned at Laguna, pulling himself to his feet to watch the rest of the worryingly close demonstration.
Zigzagoon had turned to face mini-C0D13, and health bars had popped up above both the combatants. C0D13's digital spiel kicked back in, buzzing with perfectly calibrated educational frequencies.
"In a Pokemon battle, it is incredibly difficult to catch a Pokemon at high health." A Pokeball materialized in front of Codie and was launched halfheartedly at the Zigzagoon. It ricocheted comically, disappearing among the tall grass.
"See? Impossible. First, you must weaken the opposing Pokemon." C0D13 must have seen the excitement in Laguna's eyes at the prospect of battling, because he continued quickly. "Which I will show you how to do. Attack Mini-C0D13!" A beam of customer service energy blasted the Zigzagoon, dropping it perfectly into a catchable range.
Another Pokeball materialized and was launched at breakneck speed towards the Zigzagoon. It smacked into the fuzzy Pokemon, which was sucked inside without resistance. "Bzzt! Easy as 1, 10, 11!"
A popup appeared in front of Big Bee. "What do you think?" he asked Laguna, hand hovering over the 'My Turn!' button. "Give it a go?"

As soon as the tutorial began proper, Laguna simply zoned out. She had seen this exact same tutorial shown game after game, without any major changes, since she was incredibly young. She sighed, turning to face Big Bee.
"I swear, you would think they'd change this by now. I get it's a kid-friendly game series, it always has to be available to new players and the like. But you'd think they'd have like, an option just to say no thanks?" Honestly, it seemed like common practice at this rate. It was weirder that they were so adamant about never changing the tutorial, than anything else.
"... Speaking of kids, when the beta is over, I fully expect to see children everywhere. But like, of course, they're not gonna look like children. Or even sound like them. Weird." She hummed to herself, watching COD13 finally catch the Zigzagoon. She sighed once more, imagining she was finally free.
And then she read the popup in front of Bee, and her confusion grew even more. There really was no option to just, leave huh? Even the WOW! option probably went on for another several minutes. "You know what? Yeah, sure. I could probably catch something! Maybe we'll find something interesting. What kind of Pokemon have you been on the lookout for? Anything specific?"

"At least this tutorial was optional," Big Bee said, getting up and brushing off the Zigzagoon fur that was stuck on his shirt. He retied his bandana, which had come off in the scuffle, into a zig-zag style.
"I'm just doing it to get that Golden Pokeball. It's only a few minutes, and this place is great, isn't it?" He looked around at the long grass. There was something oddly calming about the slow, constant movement. It was like watching a great, green ocean. "I used to be all about rock types. But ever since I got Taka I've been heading more towards water. I love the swimming in this game! I'm a bit of a surfer in real life."
"What about you?" he asked, slapping the 'My turn!' button. "You look like the sporty type!"

"Optional?" She tilted her head, incredibly confused. Did she miss something along the way? She totally wouldn't put it past her to miss something obvious like that. Still, the idea of a golden Pokeball did sound quite appealing.
As Big Bee mentioned the area, she herself turned around to get a close look at it all. It felt so real. Considering she hadn't really left the city in years if she looked normal and nobody told her this was a game, she'd completely believe it was real. The insane power of video games these days.
"Ooh, I love the swimming too! I'll admit, I used to be on my track team in high school! It's, err, been a while though! Like, 5 years since I graduated, you know?" The brief thought of her senior year getting cut short by the accident definitely popped into her head, but she intentionally ignored it for now.
Sure enough, as she looked out across the ocean of grass something suddenly disturbed the grass. It shifted about as if something was traveling towards them. Laguna clutched at the Pokeball on her hip, sending out her own starter pokemon. The Popplio swam around her in the air, benefitting from her Swimmer class abilities.
Sure enough, a Patrat popped out of the underbrush, teeth bared and clearly ready to attack. "Oh man, consider me unsurprised it's a rodent! Everyone's first encounter, huh?" She'd laugh with a grin spreading across her face, pointing out towards the Patrat. "Marina! Aqua Jet!" The Popplio let out a battle cry, building up water all around them as they slammed forwards with incredible speed. The two pokemon flew backward, straight into the underbrush, and immediately gone from sight.
"Oh, uh, oops. No wonder they say tall grass is dangerous. Especially with little pokemon."

Big Bee laughed as the Popplio shot off into the grass, disappearing completely. One second it had been floating gently through the air and the next it was swallowed by the foliage. "Yeah I never got that sense from the games, but they've really captured it here," he said, making a mental note to send the compliment down to the graphics team.
"Always the rodent," he agreed, as the sounds of muffled fighting came from deep within the grass. "Is it fair to make it a 2v1?" he asked, reaching for a Pokemon of his own. "It probably scales, right? It's fine. I'll pick a little one too."
A Litten appeared on the ground, looking up at him with big eyes. "Go help!" Big Bee said, pointing into the shaking grass. "Use Bite on Patrat!"
Litten's eyes sparkled mischievously, and she bounded off into the grass. A second later there was a high-pitched, squeaky scream. Big Bee hoped it was from the Patrat.
"Poochyena!" he said suddenly, turning to Laguna. "In Ruby and Sapphire you fight a Poochyena, not a rodent."

"I mean, if the game lets you make it a two versus one, well I don't see why not!" She'd give him a wide grin, even as she turned her attention back to the tall grass. It was incredibly hard to see what was going on, but the sounds of confrontation were obvious.
"Uh, Marina! Use Disarming Voice!" Even if the pokemon themselves were having a hard time seeing one another, sound didn't exactly care whether or not one was visible.
A loud cry echoed across the plains, grass rippling as the sheer pressure of the sound waves blew them away. For just a fraction of a second, the pokemon engaged in combat were visible, the Patrat's teeth were clamped down hard onto her Popplio's tail, as it desperately tried to fling it off. And just like that, the grass settled back to its normal shape and hid the fight once again behind rustling blades of grass.
"Huh? Oh, yeah! Poochyena! Do you also fight one in the remakes? It's been too long since I played it! I picked Mudkip as my starter back in the day. Popplio, however, is just so adorable. I hope they're doing alright in there. You know... If this game doesn't have a lawnmowing side-quest, I'll be disappointed!"

"I think they're saving the lawnmowing side quests for the Trainer Class wars," joked Big Bee. "When us oppressed Swimmers must rise up and cut down the overgrowing Gardeners." He laughed. "Pretty sure that's all in Area 2 though."
The tussle in the grass went on, and the trio tumbled into sight for a moment. Litten had its jaws clamped around one of the Patrat's back legs. "Yeah! You got this Litten!" Big Bee called. He hadn't named the cat yet, but he was getting the feeling that it was a ferocious little predator.
Big Bee wracked his brain, trying to remember his training. His backstory. He'd never actually played Ruby or Sapphire, and he'd only watched a fast-forwarded let's-play of the remakes by some generic British youtuber. "Uh, yeah I picked Mudkip too!" he lied. "I've got one now, too. Love that little guy. Not the brightest, but he'd one hell of a tank! Great defensive typing." Phew! Saved it.

"Trainer class wars." She laughed, shaking her head. "Wouldn't that be a riot of a good time." Perhaps one day there will be some capture-the-flag event, and everyone who has a specific class builds bases. Like, the Swimmers could build a base under the water, and it would be super fun with everyone defending in their own element.
But for now, she was being sidetracked. The wild grass eventually subdued, and before she knew it her Popplio had trapped the Patrat in a bubble, kicking it out in front of them as they climbed out of the grass themselves.
"Oh!" Laguna spoke, kneeling down to look at the Patrat. It seemed still conscious, but definitely not all there. "I guess this is when we just, capture them up now, huh?" She'd turn to face Big Bee, a soft grin on her face.
"And I take it, this is also goodbye for now! I'm sure I'll catch up with you at some point! Ooh, maybe we should send friend requests. Can we even do that? I haven't really looked at the options much." She hummed, suddenly pulling up her UI.
Meanwhile, her Popplio began to roll the Patrat around, bouncing on its bubble and slowly rolling between the two trainers.

Big Bee watched the unconscious Patrat roll around inside the giant bubble. He gripped his Pokeball tight, taking aim. The tutorial wouldn't be complete until he actually caught something, right? "Catching it should be easy now. We just..." he tossed the Pokeball and the Patrat disappeared inside.
"Great!" buzzed Codie. "Catching initiation sequence has been completed. You are now fully qualified to continue without further assistance." He blinked out of existence, and a series of popups appeared in Big Bee's UI.
Patrat has been added to your Box!
Congratulations! You have passed the Catching Tutorial!
Golden Pokeball has been added to your inventory!
He dismissed all of them, grinning as he picked up the ball that held his new friend. "I've never had one of these. Fierce eyes, right?"
Laguna mentioned friend requests, and he launched into immediate Customer Service move. "Sure we can! It's easy. Just head into Friends List, and then click Add Nearby Trainer. And there we go!" His UI pinged for the tenth time in as many minutes, and he gladly accepted the request. "Thanks! Yeah I'm sure we'll bump into each other again soon. Be sure to send me a message if any terrible Patrats are bothering you, or if the Gardeners begin their uprising early!"
And with that the two parted ways. For now.
