She always expected the pokemon trainer in the video games not wearing shoes to be a bit of a bit. Some kind of funny joke, but it seemed the game had decided to make it a quite literal feature. Laguna had no shoes on. For a girl who had not felt anything with her feet in years, she couldn't have cared less about covering them up.
Until she stepped on a particularly sharp rock and realized just what the realistic pain setting meant.
So here Laguna stood, double-checking her mini-map over and over again as she stared at the house in front of her. Mom's House. It seemed almost bizarre, did every single character have the same mother? What even was Mom like? Did every single player share the same bedroom?
"Well," Laguna spoke up, gently tossing the Pokeball in her hands. "I guess this is just what I gotta do. Tell her I'm going on a Pokemon Adventure, yeah?" The Pokeball didn't respond, considering her Popplio wasn't out of her ball. It simply felt better talking to it than to no one.
Waddling up to the door, her legs still oddly stiff, the girl raised a hand as if to knock on the door, only to realize just how weird it would be to knock on your own home. Laughing quietly to herself, she finally opened the door and pushed inside.
"Uh, hello?" She spoke, sticking her head into the house. "Anyone home? M-mom?"

Indeed, someone was home. Lucky was sitting down on the table, a bite of pie in his mouth and a look of surprise on his face. Of all the times he'd expect someone to come onto the beta, this late at night was not one of them. He'd come to the house at this time, a walk of shame really, as he'd realized that he'd totally skipped the tutorial over. He'd been exploring the isles this whole time without running shoes..!
"Oh heya there, lass! You here to start the tutorial, too? Ha, ha. A right pair of fellow scrubs we are!" Of course, it was a given that he would never let this young lady know that. He'd play it off and say that he was a total noob. Yes, this plan was perfect. The mother entering the room with another slice of pie for the young lady only strengthened his bluff,
"Oh, there you are, dear! It's finally time for you two to take the first steps on your journey... Ah, I'm going to miss you so much!" The tears in her eyes looked pretty realistic, Lucky thought as he watched the scene before him. He continued to tie his running shoe's laces. It wasn't a feature he'd expected to exist, and yet shoe tying was here regardless. There was an automatic equip, sure, but Lucky didn't trust a shoe to another pair of hands besides his own.

Laguna honestly didn't know what she was expecting, but it certainly wasn't a strange man sitting inside of her home. Their home? The game really expected them to just believe this was normal. A very strange turn of events.
"O-oh! Uh, hello!" She called out, an excited grin on her face. "I take it, this is Mom's Hous-"
Before she could even finish her words, the Mother character walked into the room. She seemed so... real. So emotional, so passionate. For the briefest moment, she swore that had to have been a real person. The tears alone broke her heart.
"Oh... Uh, Mom? Don't cry!" She'd fully step into the house. Her every step was a bit wobbly, clearly fighting to keep her balance. Despite her unsure gait, Laguna continued to smile softly all throughout. "It's alright! I'll uh, call? All the time. And come back home whenever I can!"
"Oh, I know, but I'm still going to miss you!" Mother replied, wiping away her tears as the pie was promptly placed down upon the table. "You just sit down dearie! I'll be right back!" And as quickly as she arrived, the woman hustled back through the house. Presumably to grab the same gift she gave every trainer before they start, their own running shoes.
Laguna blinked, completely stunned for a few moments. She'd finally turn to her fellow new player, speaking as she rather unceremoniously flopped into the chair. "Is this, always how it goes? Are we like... siblings? Is that the lore? Also uh, hi! I'm Laguna."

"Siblings, huh? I mean hey, that's one way to dissuade game dating with other players." He allowed himself a short yet nervous laughter to ease the stress and replied, "You can just call me Lucky! I'm a Lucky Guy you could say-You and any other bloke on the block around. Tippity pleasure to meet you, lass. If my gut and my UI tells me right, you're about to go on a good trek around the countryside."
He glances off to the side. The mother had returned, bringing sorrowful claims of how sad it's going to be with the two of them gone out in the world. Lucky himself didn't take much stock in her words, but he didn't take the time to be snarky about it. The lady in the room with him seemed to be just that little bit invested in it that he didn't want to ruin the mood. Instead he decided to take a quick trip outside after giving his mother a hug, waiting for Laguna to say her goodbyes and meet him out there. A run would be good this evening. The sky was wonderful today, and the air smelled fresh as ever, missing the twinge of sea-salt that the islands held as his own coastal home in the real world did. It was an invigorating experience. Lucky wondered why he left this place so early for just a moment more because of it.

Dissuade game-dating? As if that would stop anyone. Regardless, she laughs along with Lucky and smiles as he introduces himself. "Well, I would hope I'm going on an adventure! That's part of the whole game, isn't it?"
Mom came back into the room, her cheeks stained with just that bit more tears that she had clearly wiped away before she returned. "Oh, goodness I remember when you were just babies! And now my dears are traveling the world." She spoke, a shoebox casually in her hands.
She'd set the box down to hug Lucky as he left, before turning to face Laguna. "Oh, if your father was only here to see you now... He'd be so proud of you." A look of sorrow crossed her face, "And do, please steer clear of quicksand... I couldn't stand to lose you too, I'd-"
"Alright, alright, I get it Mom. I'll be careful." Laguna would stand up, hugging the sad woman herself. Of course, she did suddenly begin to worry. Quicksand wasn't even remotely scary in real life, movies and video games only made it scary... But this was a game. "I'm gonna meet Lucky outside, okay?"
After a flurry of packing away the pie Laguna hadn't eaten into a small tin for the future, tying her own brand new shoes, and being given just a little too much advice about how to survive being swallowed by the earth, she finally made it outside. As Laguna took her first few steps out the door, her steps were clearly unbalanced. Her arms wobbled back and forth a bit as she strode forwards.
"So uh, hey... There isn't like, quicksand everywhere, is there?" Laguna would suddenly ask, seemingly out of nowhere. "Just a thought. But anyway, uh, how long have you been playing? I'm not afraid to admit, I spent like, hours in the character creator." As if her blue hair and elegantly cute outfit didn't attest to that fact already.

"Nah, quicksand shows up in slopes that go down to water sources. A river might not have quicksand when it's flat, but creeks do since they're in pits. S'called alluvial fanning, for reference. Gotta be real with ya though, that's just what's realistic-I don't know a rattata's tail whether there's weird spots where quicksand hits! Maybe there's platforming challenges and they thought it'd be a good idea to stick some in, savvy?
I can tell you this much, though-haven't heard any reports on the forums about quicksand yet. It should be fine for now at least, yeah? Nothing to worry yourself over," Lucky explains. He makes sure to make it long and informative, just so that the girl would focus on his words and not the fact that he neglected to say how long he'd been playing the game for. Lucky readies himself for a good jog by stretching his limbs as a warm up, looking ahead towards the other end of the village.
There was a reason for looking there. Presumably something the NPCs didn't notice right now were the rings of light that signified where to go running off to for the sake of tutorial's completion. It was a long stretch down the road ahead, perfect for running down for a long time.
Lucky only hoped that there was something good for him at the end, though he admitted to himself that the newfound freedom of running was a good reward in of itself. He could jog before, but Lucky Guy could tell it now-this was faster than Lucky McConnel was ever able to. He wasn't even checking to see whether Laguna was even able to catch up with him--
Wait, she was ahead of him? How?! What kind of person put this much enthusiasm into running?

She blinked in surprise. Alluvial fanning? Whoever this person was in real life, they were clearly very smart! Even still, he agreed that quicksand in video games was seemingly just, plopped into places. "Yeah, well, Mom seemed concerned, that's all."
The rings of light appeared, almost like some old-fashioned racing game, and she couldn't help but get excited. Her legs were still wobbly from general balance issues, but running was something different. Your body would be constantly in motion, constantly falling forwards. No matter how complex simply standing seemed, running excited her.
"Last one there is a rotten poffin!" And with that, Laguna rushed off as fast as her legs could carry her.
Her running gait was hilariously bad, her arms fighting for balance as she'd misstep every now and then, stumbling forwards, but she always managed to pick herself back up. It seemed the less she actively thought about it, and just did it, her long-lost muscle memory would simply take effect. She was clearly running with every single ounce of energy she had, the thought to even reserve her energy not even conceptualized yet.
Her giggles and excited laughter could clearly be heard echoing through the small starter city with every step.

It was enough that Lucky couldn't catch up to Laguna 'till after she'd gone and reached the finish line. He realized this much ahead of time, and decided to just take it at a more relaxed pace because of that. Looks like he was ending up as the rotten poffin.
"Ah, well. I could've used the poison typing sooner or later... Might as well be now. Fair play, lass." Thankfully his decision to be wise about his speed allowed him to speak without needing to catch his breath. This really was a nice city to be running in. Maybe he'd come back here for his nightly walks after the Storm was over and done.
Congratulations! You have learned how to RUN.
"Yeah... pretty great. I'm sure I'll use that a lot." He was not miffed about how he couldn't run before in the past few days. He was not...
Ah, the girl was still there, pleased out of her wits. Well, it was nice enough to see someone else smile that it cheered Lucky right back up again. He offers, "Hey, meet you again later, yeah? Maybe if we cross in another tutorial on happenstance. I've gotta sign off for now, though-getting pretty early over here and I'll need to work soon."
He'd log off eventually. Not before chatting with Laguna a while longer, of course.

At the very end of the race, Laguna was exhausted. Even as she flopped onto the ground to catch her breath, she found herself wondering if she even needed to. The tightness in her chest, the loss of oxygen after such exertion... it was all mental energy, right? So how in the world did she feel so tired?
Virtual Reality was amazing.
"H-hey! Yeah! Later, too!" She'd huff, catching her breath as she climbed back onto her knees. "I'll-" Laguna paused to take a deep breath. "Definitely, definitely have to see you later at some point! Can I send you friend requests? Or like, what, give you my phone number? I don't know the system for this."
She'd laugh joyously and free, grinning ear to ear until the two finally separated. It was nice to make a friend so early on in the game, anyways.
