"I'm back, Professor," Sarah said, success gleaming in her eyes. "My team has grown, and grown stronger. Thanks to your help I have returned from the Surge Steppes, having acquired a powerful creature of legend." Sarah's Pokemon team usually consisted of dragons, pillars of steel, flaming wrestlers, and other equally badass Pokemon. She sent out her latest catch, and a burst of crimson light filled her arms.
Wide, black eyes blinked at the Professor.
"This is Quincy," Sarah said, holding out the fluffy, butter-colored lamb so that the Professor could see, or perhaps pet her.
"I'm a rescue!" piped up Quincy, stretching his head out in a transparent bid for pats.
Sarah scratched him between the ears. "He's a rescue," she confirmed.

Resigned, Professor Ash watches Impadimp disrupt her neatly-organized laboratory. "Some Pokemon are simply filled with destructive energy," she muses, looking at the mess Impadimp managed to make of the lab in such a short time. "It's better to redirect it if possible." Her heels click on the linoleum as she fetches a stack of papers intended for the shredder and lets the little devil go wild. She waits for the imp to be satisfied and calm before she scans it into her database. "There. All done."
Ash is surprised, but smiles when Furrlicity reveals the Pumpkaboo. "Ah, you've found a wild Pokemon in the Settlement! How exciting— I've been curious how the local populations would adapt to having so much human activity in their vicinity. It seems they're making themselves right at home."
She scans the Pumpkaboo. "I'm hesitant to confirm a stable population with the settlement still under construction— these could just be passing through on migration, for example. Few Pokemon can truly survive in a city long-term." Still, it was valuable data, and something more tangible than the 'rumors by settlers' she'd been getting her local information from. "I'll send some BYTES to your account for your effort."
"As for the last Pokemon... I was hoping we'd find a Cottonee colony in the Grove," Ash admits. She flips to a page on her clipboard. "Records show both Cottonee and Petilil used to live in this area, but considering the number of Petilil in the Grove, I fear Cottonee may have been outcompeted." She sighs, flipping back in her book. "It's unfortunate, but these things happen. If you do find evidence that Cottonee are still living in the Grove, we can take conservation efforts to protect them."
Professor Ash settles warily into her own 'guest chair,' considering Tuesday is monopolizing her usual one. "I'm happy to hear you found Cindy's survey team," she says, deciding to ignore the string of player-and-avatar jargon. "I'm sure they'd embrace the extra help if you're interested in joining them." She considers offering a word of caution, then decides to hold her tongue.
The Munna is scanned and Ash lets out a great sigh of relief. "Yes, they do. Contrary to popular myth, Munna aren't dream-eaters—they're dream-givers. They say the ancients used to communicate across vast distances with only the power of dreams to connect them." She looks up from the Munna hologram being projected and gives Tuesday a small, wry smile. "This was before any era of modern technology, of course."
She has a similar reaction to Noibat as she had to Furrlicity's Pumpkaboo. "Ah, you've found a wild Pokemon in the settlement! I had been hearing about Noibat sightings." Her eyes narrow a little and her professional tone becomes pitched as a slight question. "Feature? I wouldn't necessarily say bats in the starting outpost are a feature, but it's certainly a good sign for wildlife in the area if they're considering moving in." No telling if these were permanent residents yet. Only time and careful monitoring would tell.
For the last Pokemon, Ash sighs. "Deadfall in timberlands like these are typically carted off by wild Timburr, but the lack of sightings as of late worries me. I hope the settlers haven't driven them off with their logging operation— it seems more likely that someone's been catching them to sell as laborers overseas." A troubling thought.
Equally troubling was the Precipice Shrine, which people were apparently still throwing their refuse down. "I suppose I need to put up 'no dumping' signs," Ash says, rubbing her temples.
Tuesday has been transferred 50 BYTES! When Sarah Lee enters the Lab, Ash straightens up. "Have you encountered—" she begins, eyes gleaming, then stops short at the words 'he's a rescue.'
"A rescue," she echoes, gears turning in her head. "By that you mean, not a wild Pokemon?" She scans the Mareep, pets it, and shakes her head. "No, this is certainly a wild Mareep." Wool texture aside, its tail was still long and lizardy, meaning this was no docked farm animal.
Her previous conversation with Tuesday leads Ash to the correct conclusion. "Ah. So someone was catching Pokemon illegally out there," she says. "I apologize for the trouble. I'd suspected something was interfering with the local populations." She shakes her head— it's to be expected, but frustrating nonetheless. How many of her survey teams had hunted all night and day for a rare Pokemon that was just sitting in some hunter's cage? Was this the reason so few new Pokemon had been brought back from the Surge Steppes?
The other two trainers she'd sent out searching for her survey teams had returned successfully— so where was the last one? Where was MYTHSTAR?
Had something happened to them?

Momo rapped sharply on the doorframe before entering the Pokemon Lab. "I'm coming in," she called briskly, then stepped inside. Her eyes swept the strange equipment, the bookshelves, and finally Professor Ash before she approached.
She approached respectfully, leading a Pokemon behind her at the end of a short rein. It had been fitted with a saddle already, and its two heads looked around curiously before fixating on the silver-haired Professor.
"I, ah, didn't see this Pokemon on your list for Route 3," she said shortly. She took an awkward step away from the Doduo and sort of gestured to it. "It's a Doduo," the teen said, then blushed. I'm sure she can already tell, she thought. "Her name is Hiyoko. I hope this was useful," she finished awkwardly.

Another day, another cup of coffee and a small folder set on the professors desk. The fighter doesn't quite seem his normal chipper self however as he watches her go over his report, the subject matter of this particular report seems rather...solemn.
"So I found this lil dude while duking it out with some rustlers in the Misty Timberland. He could be from another place, but that aint likely. I'm thinking about naming him Atlas, but I'm not entirely sure." The Nidoran (M) set sitting on the table looks slightly nervous, his recruitment to the team was unorthadox at best, and this whole "being part of the squad" as the other pokepals had put it was...not what he was used to. Everyone around him was so strong! How could he ever be like them?
"As for the report well, I went dicking around in that Everworld place, Achilles got nabbed and there was no way I was leavin em there. Some spooky goon named Seta gave me the runaround in order to get in, said all this good shit about... how nothing ever returns unchanged, and how I would change too..." a scowl crosses his face as he recalls the hour or two spent dicking around just trying to get to the trial.
"...And how Violence put them in his halls to begin with."
His teeth clenched slightly as his scowl deepened. The report itself, despite his current actions, was quite detailed, describing the desert sands of poketory, his methodology of trying to "solve" the puzzle set before him. The resolution of finding Achilles in the shadows, his own change seemed to come in the form of enhancing his fighting prowess. Clicking his tongue, Orion would shake his head to try and dispel the cloud hanging over his head and turn his attention back to the professor.
"It's weird, cause spooky doofus made it sound like he was chiding me for fighting, but here I am coming back even stronger than ever and ready to crack open a frosty can of whoopass on the next goon who gets rowdy and disturbs the peace. So I guess what I'm curious about is your opinion. Is it...wrong to make your pokebros fight? I mean, Its not like I really got their explicit consent when catchin em and all that, but its not like I'm not right in the thick of it throwing hands with em." To accent his point he would find himself letting out a quick burst of jabs, one a fire punch, the other an ice punch, and then finishing off with a thunder punch. "Either way, I'll stop waxing poetic and get back to trying to finish this catalogue"

Another day, another cup of coffee, another new Pokemon for the Asper Sampling survey. And, it seems, another unique and insightful report by the one and only orioncayge.
"I've heard of Seta," Ash says, musing. "The Everworld's Gatekeeper. Something about the name seems familiar, but I can't quite recall from which legend it originates." She reads over the dispatch silently as Orion extrapolates, her eyes occasionally lifting from the page to meet his.
A spark of genuine surprise kindles in her face. It's strangely human, strangely subtle, strangely realistic. Or perhaps not strange at all— simply real.
"You're asking for my opinion?" She hesitates, then her lips curve, shaping a wry smile. "Very well."
"Theoretically, there's no problem. Pokemon are born and bred for fighting other Pokemon— it's in their DNA. Were there no people, Pokemon would still be battling in the wild over resources like food and shelter. Many see humankind's relationship with Pokemon as a trade-off— we offer care and companionship in exchange for harnessing their natural instincts." She takes a sip of the coffee Orion brought her, looking thoughtful.
"But morally, of course not. A Pokemon can not consent. We can extrapolate things like loyalty, desire to fight, perhaps even enjoyment in battling— and those things may be true." She swivels in her chair. "But there is no proof a Pokemon understands consequences. A Pokemon may consent to fight— but can they consent to die?"
The Professor raises her eyebrows.
"They say humankind is the only species which understands mortality. We alone are cursed, or blessed, with the knowledge that some day our lives will end. With that in mind, we must take responsibility for those in our care who lack such insight."
She directs her words to the little Nidoran on the table, reaching out to scratch its chin. "How about you, little one? Do you know what you're risking, when you fight alongside your teammates?" Her tone is gentle, and she withdraws her hand. "Trust, camaraderie, love— all those things are real, for both people and Pokemon. But so is loss. Especially out here in Asper, with all its unique dangers. Loss of life, loss of limb, even loss of spirit, sanity, and self. Can a Pokemon really understand that?"
Professor Ash lives in a different world from Orion Cayge. In her world, Pokemon are speechless. In her world, Pokemon have no HP bar— only the resources their body affords them. In her world, there is no 'Enter the Everworld' popup when a trainer 'whites out.' There is only consequences. Hard decisions. And times when you have to make a choice.
"Achilles is fortunate to have a trainer who would go to hell and back for him," she says, fitting Orion's report into a category marked 'Everworld.' The filing cabinet closes with a dull clunk. "Not every Pokemon is so lucky."
She sighs, then looks back at the blond man. "But this is merely my opinion. Morality is relative. Others might call what you do, orioncayge— fighting Pokemon with your own two hands— a kind of abuse. Personally, I find it rather noble." She gives him another small smile.
"Pokemon Battling is well-entrenched in our society. A necessary evil in the name of progress— and, if we are honest, a buffer between ourselves and forces we do not understand. Perhaps we cannot know their minds, but if we have remarkable courage, we can share in their fate."

It’s a small horse, but that makes sense, given that it has pony in its name and all. Thankfully, while that would be a dealbreaker for Mars, Tuesday also happens to be pretty damn small, and so this little pony (no affiliation with the TV show or the toyline) may just be the perfect height for her.
She jumps onto the Ponyta’s back, pointing to the settlement up ahead.
"Hi Yo, Silv– OW! Ow. Dude! What the fuck?!"
Probably should have accounted for the fact that this pony has a flaming mane. Probably should have stayed a Kindler. Probably shouldn’t have tried to ride a pokémon she didn’t buy a mount for. Stupid game.
The Ponyta laughs at her and with a sigh, Tuesday resigns herself to leading it to the lab with a makeshift bridle.
"I swear, every single day I get one step closer to disabling pokéspeech…"
Five minutes later, it’s with a confident smile that Tuesday enters Professor Ash’s lab, as if nothing had just happened. She gestures towards the Ponyta by her side almost as if saying ”TA DA!”
"Behold, professor. I brought you a rescue."
Oh yeah, she’s just so charitable and nice.
"Grabbed him from some sketchy-looking guys up in the Timberlands. Poachers or something, I guess?"
<'Pfft. I remember it being more like you left most of the work to others and barely did anything.'>
Stupid Ponyta.
Looking at the pokémon, Tuesday brings an index finger to her lips and winks.

She saw the male Nidoran on the list of Pokemon that could be shown to the professor but not the female one. Perhaps they were different? Did that make any difference at all? Well, she wasn't about to lose out on helping out and potentially getting a reward just because of it. So she took both of them in her arms at the same time. It was quite a feat considering how they wiggled around in her arms. But she wasn't going to let that stop her either. "I've got both of these. They're the same but different, correct?" She wasn't sure what was so great about them but at least she had the matching set. Which meant a matching set of tanks. showing off nidoranM from the bounties and nidoranF

"Hey, Prof-- Oof!" Alice skidded straight into the doorframe of the professor's lab as she tried to turn direction to head inside. She was still getting the hang of these running shoes... turning while running was going to be difficult in every Pokémon game, it seemed. "Whew! Professor, I found a Pokémon you might not have seen before!"<It's going to be so embarrassing if she has seen it before,> Stella remarked. "Show some optimism, Stell." Alice clicked the button of her Pokéball and, in a flash of red light, Gothita appeared before them. "Meet Gemini! We met her in the Settlement, actually, and the encounter was pretty interesting. She took not one, but two supereffective Dark-type moves without so much as a scratch!" Well, they did a few points of damage, but definitely not the kind of damage a supereffective move should make. "She went down in one hit after that, but it was bizarre she took little to no damage until then. I know Gothitas usually have good special defense, but this was something else."

Of all the people to breast boobily into Ash's office, Allotta Bambooga hadn't seen her in a long while. Tuesday was also probably rolling in a ditch somewhere. The very pokemon the catwoman had been searching for had been in Allotta's grip for ages by this point.
"Hi, Prof!" She started. But whatever she had came here for originally was forgotten as she looked at the board behind Ash.
"Oh, shit! Are we doing another one of those?" Allotta had not paid attention during the Asper Opening and was always quick to banish any notifications to the Everworld.
"I got, uh... Okay, some my guys aren't on this list, um... hey! Okay!"
So the procession of stupidity would start.
Allotta took the time to show the Professor every one of her pokemon.
"This is... this is Blue! You gave him to me!" The Sobble nodded to Ash before scaling his Trainer. He would stay on her head the rest of her rambling.
"This is GUN. I got him from Old Bethany." The Wurmple laid prone on the ground, as per usual.
"Big Bang I got from the tower with all the Patrat." The Meowth trilled, galaxy coating reflecting up at Ash before she tried to rub on her legs.
"I got Peachy here in a forest!" The Pichu lumbered behind his Trainer, massive due to a graphical glitch.
"I actually traded Finnegan Fjord for Sparkler..." The Litten sniffed at a paper wad next to the trash can.
"Feathers came from Old Bethany, too!" The Galarian Farfetch'd yawn, clinging to his leek like the duckling he was.
"Fluffnut came from.... hmm... I think the Tower? I forgot." The Shinx had stolen the paper wad from Sparkler; the two cats were engaged in a rug of war.
"Lesse... Riki... also came from Bethany! You know, a lot of my pokemon came from her... hmm...." The Sensu Oricorio swayed in place on Ash's desk.
It was becoming quite crowded.
Yet Allotta wasn't done.
"Freezer I got from fighting a giant pokemon! Fireass I actually caught when C0D13 was destroying Beta Island... Pokey I hatched from an egg! And then... hmm... you know, I haven't named this guy yet. I saved him from some poachers." The pokemon mentioned were a Glaceon, Charmander, Nidoran Male, and finally a Timburr.
All crowded into the right space of the tent.
Allotta looked quite proud of herself.

Furrlicity had finally noticed the status.
It flickers. When he hovers over it, some type countdown seems to be playing out in symbols he couldn't parse.
A sigh.
Well, he could always just... ask?
"Hey, Ash. I found the last Birchwild pokemon, finally." The tent is the same as always. It looks like the Timberland Team had already finished out their discovers when he peers at the board of missing pokemon.
He tosses the Cottonee out. The pokemon is weak, thin, and lethargic. Furrlicity just gives it a soft pat on the head which earns a soft noise.
"I found her deep in the woods; she'd been caught in a poison cloud from some mushrooms. Doesn't seem that healthy... you know anything I can do to heal her up?" Food, water, and rest he would guess. But this was also a video game, so maybe there was some special mechanic he didn't know about?
But Furrlicity had over questions. A quick glance is given to the status effect.
For some reason, he decides to hold his tongue.
"Hey Prof, you mentioned 'Corruption' one time when I was here... can you tell me more about that? Just uh... everything you know about it. Like what it might do to the environment, to pokemon.... to people."
Furrlicity shows off Cottonee!

Beau had only interacted with Professor Ash briefly when he started the game, having chosen not the do the standard 'pick your starter at the lab' event. So he entered her office a bit hesitantly, Pidove's Pokeball clutched in his hands. "Ah, hello Professor. I encountered this guy in the settlement, and while it's not on the list, I thought you might want to see it?" He released the Pidove onto her deck, where it cooed at the woman before glaring at Beau. "He, uh, kind of attacked me, but I think I upset him first..." Beau still wasn't sure what he had done, but either way, it had ended with the Pidove in his possession. Beau shows off the Pidove found in the Settlement!

He'd done it! He'd managed to catch a Pokemon all on his own and he found out that it was the last Pokemon they needed for a big quest! Which meant that he would get some sort of neat reward right? Hurrying towards the Professor he held up the ball of steel and electric proudly. "Look! I found him in the Surge Steppes! Isn't he neat?" Because he was of course, very neat.

"Ah, more rescues from the poachers," Ash says to Momo and Tuesday , scanning the Doduo and Ponyta. The band of thieves is no new news for her, so she just sighs and marks down another note on her checklist. "By my standards, it seems many Pokemon adapted to the plains would make excellent Ride Pokemon. One can have a Saddle crafted here in town, I believe." She transfers both girls their compensation, thanking them for their effort.
Tuesday has been transferred 25 bytes! For diva , Professor Ash carefully looks over the two Nidoran, taking out an instrument and gently inspecting the inside of their large, sensitive ears. "As you're surely aware, Nidoran and Nidoran used to be classified as entirely separate species," she says, now measuring the length of the male Nidoran's teeth. "Early biologists didn't know what to make of physical gender differences. Pokemon Breeding was only a hypothesis at the time." She releases the measuring tape with a snap and straightens up, brushing off her pristine lab coat. "These days, however, we do consider both male and female Nidoran to be the same species. I appreciate your commitment to the survey, however." She does not mention the female Nidoran in the lineup shows none of the typical wear and tear of a life in the wild, and was almost certainly hatched from an egg in captivity. Alice! 's Gothita seems to amuse the Pokemon Professor, who kneels down to scan her into the system. "This explains a great deal," she says as the psychic-type's silhouette appears on screen. "I've been hearing far too many reports of settlers being haunted by the visage of a victorian child to dismiss them entirely, but the behavior doesn't line up with that typical for ghost-types. It'll be a weight off their minds to know it's merely Gothita." Ash transfers Alice her BYTES, still looking amused. "The settlement in its current state is ideal for humanoid Pokemon. I wouldn't be surprised if Gothita becomes a permanent resident."
Alice! has been transferred 25 bytes! Ash patiently suffers through meeting each and every one of Allotta Bambooga 's Pokemon as the large-breasted trainer shows them off (the Pokemon) with enthusiasm. Unlike Dr. Bunya, who knows Allotta much more intimately from Beta Island, this is largely Ash's first impression of the fiery Kindler.
"I remember Blue well, thank you. I can see he's well cared for," she says, inclining her head to the Sobble on the dragon girl's head. Looking over the rest of the pack, she hesitates before offering a word of advice. "I'd also advise caution with releasing your Litten so casually. I'm not sure if you're aware, but they're... well, we'll say restricted due to their destructive effect on local wildlife. I'd advise getting him microchipped as soon as possible, and possibly evolving him to Torracat for the built-in bell and collar."
Ash is so focused on the Litten she gives a little start when she realizes one of Allotta's insane number of Pokemon is something she hasn't actually seen before. "You've found a Timburr!" She brightens, bending down to scan it quickly before any more Pokemon come out. "Excellent, I was worried the poachers had caught them all. Misty Timberlands, correct?" She marks it down on her list.
"Excellent. It's good to see native Pokemon returning to Unova," Ash said, scanning in the Pidove Beau Briggs had released on her desk. "Pidove are quite hardy— they'll likely fit in well in an urban environment. They're normally quite docile."
She transfers over 25 BYTES for the information and turns to the next person who walks through the door— a white-haired young man with something unexpected: a Magnemite. "In the Surge Steppes? That makes twelve Pokemon exactly," Ash says. Never has it been so satisfying to see the little ping as the steel-type is registered into the system. "An excellent catch, and very illuminating."
Beau Briggs and prince have been transferred 25 bytes! "Hello, Furrlicity."
Something is different.
Ash senses it in the catman's demeanor. A quietness, a strangeness. Perhaps it's her honed sense of the supernatural. Perhaps it's merely familiarity with the blonde after seeing him so many times, collecting all kinds of Birchwild Pokemon from the mundane to the mysterious. Talking about all kinds of things, from relationships to the nature of evil. The bite still missing from her desk. The sample she took from his soot-stained hands.
Her expression changes from inquisitive to serious and she stands, approaching him immediately.
"Are you all right?"
The Cottonee, the final Pokemon of the Birchwild survey, would have excited her so much only a day ago. Now she keeps one eye on Furrlicity even as she scans it in, noting its malnourished appearance. "So they're still out there," she murmurs. The subject is unclear.
"Corruption..." Ash trails off after she finishes registering the grass-type. "Is not something well understood, though its effects are well documented. This won't sound terribly scientific, but I think of it as a curse."
Ash continues after a few seconds. "Some call it a disease. A darkness. A twisting in the way the world should work. As a ghost-type specialist, I might akin it to possession— the Corruption takes over a place, and the more it takes, the more powerful it grows. It takes the form of fear, and taints all it touches.
A person taken by the Corruption may do things they never wanted to do— or worse, they may not hesitate do the things they did want. That is if they remained human at all."
She's quiet for a moment.
"However, unlike previously thought, it is not incurable. Since the events on Beta Island, we are on the leading edge of scientific progress to drive back this blight, and reclaim UNOVR." There's determination in her tone, though when she looks at Furrlicity, her expression is... searching.
"But progress does not equal victory. As the sample from the Noonlight Shrine shows, some traces still remain. The survey is not worth risking your own well-being— be careful, Furrlicity."

EPILOGUE: ASPER SAMPLING ASPER STORY QUEST NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTEThree screens light up the interior of the Briarbane Pokemon Lab, almost a year after its original founding. The settlement and the survey have come so far since their beginnings last spring, and Professor Ash treats herself to a glass of white wine at her desk in celebration. The first screen shows ROUTE 1: BIRCHWILD GROVE. The Pokemon there range from fungi to woodland creatures, with a fairy or two thrown in the mix. Since the Noonlight Shrine's reclamation by Moltres, Ash's fears about this place have been settled. Beneath the legend's watchful eye, the Birchwild Grove is in good hands. The second screen shows ROUTE 2: MISTY TIMBERLAND. Ash had been surprised by the number of water-types in the area at first, but mist was another form of water, wasn't it? The other Pokemon were strange, dreamy, the type that played tricks on the mind. Ash wondered about the tiny purple flowers that had recently begun to bloom in the timberlands— now, despite winter fast approaching. The last screen reads ROUTE 3: THE SURGE STEPPES. Vast and open, the Steppes are home to a variety of long-legged plains Pokemon as well as steel-types drawn by the area's natural magnetism. So much still to study and survey about the geography— that had been supposed to be System Admin:Cygnus's job, but the guild leader had only recently returned to them. Ash sips her glass of wine as she composes a mass PM to her survey team members. Ash sends the message and sits back in her desk chair, sighing. A light is on in the other room and Ash raises her voice. "Dr. Bunya, what are you working on over there?""Nyathin' to worry about, Ashie!" The smaller professor pops her head out of the door, adjusting her monocle. Her hands are covered in something black and sticky, but Ash doesn't seem to notice— she's gazing up at the three screens again, marveling at the trainers' achievement. "Join me for a glass?" Ash asks, gesturing at the seat across the desk from her usually reserved for new trainers requesting a starter Pokemon. "There's something I'd like to ask you.""Sure, whatcha want?" Bunya says, coming out of her office and wiping her hands off on her lab coat. She plops down in the chair with her knees tucked up against her chest. Ash sighs. "With his long-term exposure to the Corruption, Cygnus is in no condition to finish the Steppes Survey. I'd like to move out there myself and set up a temporary base camp to work out of. I've sat by long enough while trainers do my job.""So you just want me to hold down the lab? By myself?" Bunya seems visibly excited. Her tail, if she had one, would have been flipping back and forth. "Sure, nyathing to it! I got this cat in the bag, Ashie. You got nyathing to worry about." "Good," Ash says, wrestling back her doubt. She stands, finishing her wine and setting the glass neatly on the desk with a clink. "Then I must make preparations.
