Orion shivered as his breath lingered in the air before him. Visibility was as low as the temperature as the day night cycle dipped towards night, he shook his head and sighed. It was hard to keep landmarks in sight, trees vanished into darkness and fog like his render distance was on the lowest possible setting. He shook his head and pulled his jacket closer to his frame, hunched forward, and continued forward. In theory, he could light the way with one of his pokemon, but that would force them to endure this same cold, and his discomfort wasn't worth forcing his compatriots to endure the same.
Instead, he took the time to walk in silence. Between the real world and here, true silence and solitude were a rare treat. Usually he had a cousin or comrade blowing up his phone asking him to come do something or other.
Hey Cousin! Lets go bowling! Hey Rion, lets go drink! Hey Rion! Lets go hit the weights! Hey Rion, lets go to the club!
Here in Unovr, he was bombarded with other issues. Sometimes it was quests, between waking corpse like women to trying to hatch actual gods, down moments came few and far between. His team, as lovely as they were, could be a handful too. The silence was bliss, no messages, no arguments, no strife. He breathed in the fresh misty air and exhaled a cloud of smoke, finer than any cigarette he'd ever smoked.
Who needed drugs when ever you had Pokemon? Trudging forward, he continued to into the night, ready to see whatever the game was ready to throw at him.

It started with a light, the first sign of stimulus in his long walk. How much time had passed, he couldn't tell honestly. Seconds blurred to minutes blurred to hours? His pupils contracted as he grew closer to the source. A lone lantern planted in a clearing, surrounded by ten trees, each with five distinct branches. The grass was tall, rising up to his knees and making each step slightly trickier as he sought to navigate his footsteps in the darkness. There was no telling what could be obscured there, what hole or menacing rock was waiting to turn his ankle and hobble him for this session.
Shielding his eyes from the brightness, he examined the lantern which seemed to flicker softly, on it were simple letters formed by raised metal lettering.
Deja Vu.
Orion squinted, confused as he looked up from the lantern and to the rest of the trees. The shadows of trees loomed outwards, dancing in beat to the flicker of the flame. He placed a hand on the handle of the Lantern and tried to lift it from it's stand, but it refused to give. He swore, looking around for something he might have missed. His HUD gave him no prompts, no quest notifications. This was just...a really atmospheric place, sure. Yeah, that was it. He sighed, shaking his head as he examined the post the lantern was affixed to, giving it another tug to truly be sure it was affixed before pointing himself in a direction and walking. Whilst the encounter had been weird, he wasn't quite sure what to have expected.
Something different? Either way, he continued back into the fog, back into the night.

Once again time blurred as Orion stumbled through the darkness. Each step planted carefully as he waded through the darkness, not sure what lay before him, barely certain what lay behind him. He shivered, pulling his jacket tighter to his form and rubbing his hands together to send virtual blood flowing. Exhaling another cloud of fog, he stumbled forward, silent save for his trudging footsteps.
Time blurred together, a never ending monotony, seemingly endless till the moment it was broken.
It started with a light, contracting his pupils as he grew closer to the source. Shadows loomed over him like silent colossi standing vigil over their lonely lighthouse, it took him a moment to realize what he'd found, a lantern? He entered the clearing, surrounded by ten trees each with five distinct branches, tall grass clinging to his legs like his pokebros did when they were scared. Squinting, he waded his way to the lantern and looked it over.
One single flickering flame burned brightly in a cage of dust speckled glass, the base of which was seemingly permanently affixed to the lone post jutting from the ocean of tall grass. The top was a simple dome bearing a thin tin handle. Running his hands over it, he could feel the warmth seeping into his gloved fingers, but furthermore he found a message in raised metal lettering.
Deja Vu.
His brow furrowed as the feeling struck him. He'd been here before? No, he'd just started his walk, he'd remember this. Chuckling to himself, he lingered by the light, exploring this strange oddity. No quest prompt popped up before him, no codex note glowed on the side, and no Private messages from spooky ghost players. He chuckled idly to himself, unsure of why he was so nervous. Thinking nothing of it, he continued forward into the darkness.

Time marched forward in lockstep with Orion as he trudged through the darkness. A slight sense of impatience was beginning to nag at him, his feet growing inexplicably sore as he continued along. Maybe he needed better shoes? Could that even be a problem in VR? He shook his head, sighing a cloud of fog before him. His foot smashed into a rock, and he found himself hissing as he hobbled forward a bit.
"Motherfucker!" He hissed, gritting his teeth. He took a deep breath and continued forward. If he found a clearing, he would take a break. It felt like it was too early in his journey, but at the same time his protesting knees were starting to get the better of him. Was he really so out of shape? He would need to hit the gym a little more, work those knees over his toes and train his ligaments to suck less he supposed. He found himself getting lost in the fitness train of thought, only to be snapped out of it by a bright light in the distance.
A Lantern? That was...
Orion furrowed his brow. What was a lantern doing out here? He trudged into a clearing surrounded by ten trees, each with five distinct branches. Before him, in the dead center of the clearing was a single lantern sitting on a wooden post no taller than five feet and no thicker than a light pole. He trudged through knee high grass and found himself lingering over the light, toasting his frosty fingers over the mild warmth the single flickering flame provided. He wasn't quite sure why his fingers were being so sensitive, perhaps an error with his headset? He tugged one of his gloves off and peered at his fingers which were growing pale from the cold.
He squinted, that was odd. He set his hand on the top of the lantern to warm them some more, stroking it gently only to find some sort of hidden message in raised lettering.
Deja Vu.
His jaw clenched, and the hair on his neck rose slightly. Something was wrong, but he couldn't tell what. Shuddering, he put his glove back on and went to leave, but paused for a moment, turning back to the lantern. He fished around the clearing and found a rock with a suitably pointy edge and returned to the post. He dug it in, and dragged it across the surface.
ORION WAS HERE.
He shook his head, unsure of why he'd felt the need to do so, but with the urge satisfied, he continued back into the night, unsure of what it would bring.

ORION WAS HERE
The fighter stared down at the message, puzzled. Before him was a singular lantern in a large clearing surrounded by ten trees. He was beginning to shiver, his lips blue from the cold. This was getting out of hand, he'd just left the trail head but the cold was beginning to play tricks on his head. This was...strange. The flame before him flickered, shadows danced, his mind raced. Next to the light was a loose rock, point sharp enough to have left the message behind, was someone playing a trick on him?
He turned to the left, to the right, and then looked forward into the darkness. As far as he could tell, there were no tracks to follow, no sign that anyone had been there before him. He took a deep breath, thumbing through his HUD. No pings, alerts or prompts offered him any advice. Perhaps coming here alone had been a mistake? He shook his head. He wasn't alone, if things truly went sideways he had his pokemon he could rely on, he wouldn't bother them with this cold, a mild amount of inconvenience on his part wasn't worth putting them out.
Still, something nagged at him, and he picked up the rock and carved another message into it.
REMEMBER
Surely, if he found himself here again, that would jar his memory. Satisfied, he trudged back into the darkness.

Orion staggered through he darkness. HIs feet ached, his legs were sore, and he was beginning to shake from the cold. For a moment he was tempted to take the pain setting off realistic, but mama didn't raise no bitch. He'd barely even been out here, he was just sore from the other day. Yeah, the other day. What had he done the other day? His eyes narrowed as he tried to pry the memory forth, but his mind was foggy. It was hard to remember, he'd...been in the steppes right? Yeah, that was the only region he'd messed around in, he's spent the day dicking around in the steppes with the gang.
Weird how he'd forgotten that.
Shaking his head, he found himself plowing onwards. He would find something cool, soon, yeah soon. He'd find some cool fucking treasure, or a neat little side quest, or maybe a unique pokemon to show the professor. An excuse to talk to her again, give her his notes on the other shrine he'd been to. HE could tell her about how his prayer to the Precipice shrine had made his pokemon evolve...
His pokemon had evolved?
The thought seemed strange and foreign, but right. Shaking his head, he continued forward. He just needed to find a place to stop, and then he would be fine. Somewhere to rest and warm up a bit, maybe make a fire? Yeah, he could bring out the homies, make a lil fire and maybe tell some spooky ghost stories! Speaking of, he found himself squinting as he approached a light in the distance.
A lone latern stood atop a pine post, a singular flame dancing lazily in a prison of dusty glass and wrought iron. Guarding it were ten oaken pillars, each bearing five branches that snaked upwards. He waded through a sea of green and mist, warming himself by the light flame of the light. No need for a fire, he figured, not when he had...
REMEMBER ORION WAS HERE
That was weird...he leaned forward to inspect the carved messages into the pillar, running a gloved finger over them. Some sort of secret? A quest perhaps? He began investigating more thoroughly.
DEJA VU
This hidden message in raised metal lettering set more red flags in motion than if an NFL player had straight up shot someone mid play. His eyes narrowed into slits as he searched the clearing thrice over for more secret messages. Satisfied he was missing nothing aside from this cool rock with a pointy tip...
Wait.
He squinted down at the rock, examining it in the light. He could see traces of where it'd been dragged through the wood. Someone had made those notes with this...
He had.
He took the rock to the pillar once more, leaving himself another note should he end up chancing upon this spot again.
TURN AROUND LEAVE STUCK IN LOOP
Smirking, surely this would be enough to end his loop, he trudged off into the night.

Orion found himself practically dragging himself through the darkness. Each step was labored, his breathing heavy. Something was wrong, but he couldn't place his mind on it. His lips were trembling, blue from the cold. How long he'd been out here he couldn't tell. Too long, not long enough? Time was blending together, hours to minutes to seconds. Backwards, forwards? He was lost, in the woods? In time? In life?
He was beginning to grow numb, mentally and physically. His eyes strained to see anything in front of him, was he in a forest or an endless ocean of darkness? Shadows loomed over him, shadows? That meant light! His eyes shot to a lone beacon of light in front of him.
Hope.
He picked up his pace, hobbling into the clearing once again.
Again?
He found a simple lantern, planted on a post of pine. One lone flame dancing a familiar flicker. Warmth. He found himself hovering over it, like a greedy moth desperate to soak in some of its warmth. Before him ten familiar friends stood solemnly, five appendages raised into the air in a familiar salutation. How many times had they waved him hello? How many times had they said goodbye? His eyes stared blankly at the post, something wasn't right...what was this...rock doing here?
He found himself holding a well worn rock. What was once a rough tip now smoothed out almost completely. It felt...familiar in his hands, but he wasn't sure why. His eyes trailed downward to the post.

His eyes widened as he followed the message around and around in circles. Nearly the entire post had been shredded in this fashion. Every fiber of his being wanted to take of running, but he was too tired to even attempt it. He found himself sinking onto his knees, slumping against the post. He was so cold, if only he could warm up...

A snap of a twig sends his mind on high alert. His eyes scanned the edge of the clearing frantically as he planted his back firmly against the lantern. A dump of adrenaline coursed through his veins, his breathing quickened, his lungs working like bellows in a forge. Something was out there, something was fucking with him, something was laughing at him. Some fucked up ghost pokemon, a griefer, it could be Barrak fucking Orama for all he cared, someone was about to catch some fucking hands.
Rock clenched in his hand he was ready to raise some fucking Cain.
His eyes darted from shadow to shadow, searching for his assailant.
"Who's there!" He howled, voice hoarse. "I Swear to FUCKING GOD you better come out and fucking get some or fuck off. I am NOT in the god damn mood for any fucking games!" He said, whilst playing a game. Another twig snap, his eye twitched and he howled, diving into the darkness, rock in hand ready to run down whatever was out there.

The chase was on, Orion's feet pounded the ground as he tore through an endless sea of grass, fog, and darkness. Beacon after beacon came and go, tree's blurred in his vision. His foe was just ahead of him, he could hear their breathing, he could smell their fear. He would end them, he would end this torment, these loops. Lantern after lantern streaked by. Deja Vu, Deja Vu, he'd been here before, he'd left before. Was this a nightmare? Was this reality? Was this some twisted game? It didn't matter. His gloved fingers gripped the rock so tightly he was afraid he was going to crush it to a fine powder. His eyes were trained forward, ready to catch a glimpse of his assailant. His legs pumped like machines, his arms swung wildly forward as if to claw the air into allowing him to move faster. Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Closer Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Closer. Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Ten tree's, a lantern, five branches. Deja vu. Darkness, chase, hunt. Getting closer. He let out a feral howl and lunged forward, tackling his foe to the ground at last. He would be free, he would break this cycle. He raised his rock to the air, ready to bring it down with the fury of a brother scorned, and then his eyes registered what he was looking at.

Below him lay a sneasel, hissing and screeching as it tried to rake its claws across his arms to free itself. Talons slashed across his arms, the pain sending trills of alarms across his ear as the game alerts rang out in his ear. His vision flashed red, unsure if it was pain or rage. He couldn't tell if the air was filled with his howls or it's, both mouths open in roars. He threw the rock aside, opting to throttle the weasel instead. Blood ran down his arms as it ripped his skin asunder, he couldn't feel the pain, all he could feel was rage.
Their voices mingled in a cacophonous howl, Orion and the creature rolled and tumbled through the clearing. When all was said, it was no contest, the creature lay unconcious in his hands. In another game, it would be dead, throttled to hell and back. His eyes widened, a bit of horror flashing across his face.
"Jesus christ..." he stared down on his arms, covered in lacerations that were knitting back together as the games regen worked its magic. "What the fuck have I..." He looked up to the post, his angrily scrawled and panicked messages. Loops and loops and loops, growing colder and more frantic. His mind growing duller and duller, only to be reignited by adrenaline. Remorse set in as his mind pieced itself back together.
"God fucking damnit."
The pokemon was stuck in the same loop as him, he may have just knocked out his only companion here in the night.

Guilt settled into his stomach like a rock, and he quickly snagged the Sneasel with a pokeball. He would have to perform some aftercare there later, no doubt they wouldn't be off on the best of terms after he'd just well...
He shook his head.
Blood pumping, he was filled with new life. This adrenaline wouldn't last forever, he would need to find a way forward, a way out. He'd been too careless the first time he'd encountered this puzzle, wasted too much time. He looked over the trap once again, registering each detail again.
Ten Trees Five Branches One Lantern. Fuck and all to go on.
He had a rock, a nice rock that he'd used to carve his messages till it'd ground down to a nub. No more carvings, fuck. He started by looking each tree over for some form of sign. Maybe like the lost woods he needed to go through some special gap each time. Maybe the branches pointed a certain way? Maybe the leaves had some secret esoteric password carved into them. None of these lead anywhere but back to the Lantern. Every escape attempt thwarted as he returned to the light, his mind growing fuzzier each time.
Soon he'd forget. He couldn't forget.
Deja Vu all over again, endless and endless. His eyes widened.
That was it. The rock was the key after all.

With eyes ablaze with fury, he dropped into his pitchers stance, realed his arm back, and flung the ball with his classic Cayge special. It collided with the glass, shattering it, and for a moment the entire world was alight. With a flash, the entire grove was illuminated, casting the shadow of some sinister creature in the backround. A sinister laugh filled the air, causing Orion to roar in response.
"COME FUCKING GET SOME MOTHERFU-"
The entire grove imploded. Glass, grass, trees, leaves, Orion, all were sucked inwards with little care. Orion grit his teeth as he collided with the event horizon, and then...
Everything was dark.
***Loading***
Orion found himself warm, for the first time since he'd started this entire adventure. His opened his eyes to find himself staring at the roof of a...crypt? He blinked and sat up, taking in his surroundings. He was in the crypt he'd woken the spooky chick up in. He furrowed his eyes, this is where he always logged in...could he have dreamed all of that? Had he simply...fallen asleep while logging in? Yeah...
He chuckled.
It'd all be a dream, a really nasty nightmare. Filled with relief with this information, he went to check on his team and paused.
The fucking Sneasel was still there.
The same sinister laugh filled his ears, causing Orion's blood to run cold. Had he escaped? Or was he free to fight another day.
