Manish finally found himself in the last new area since, well, since the incident on Beta Island. Technically he hadn’t really explored around the town yet but there were still a few too many people lingering in the area for him to really want to spend that much time there. Really he just wanted to find a replacement jungle, but it didn’t look like that was in the cards for him yet. He let out a long sigh as he wandered the plains. It wasn’t quite as nice as the warm, almost oppressive air of the jungle, but he supposed it was pretty nice. He just needed to stay away from the Shrine. Just the thought of it sent a chill down his spine.
“Nope, no, no, nope, not thinking about it. Nope.” He fumbled through his pockets before his shaky hands found the pokeball he was looking for. With a flash, Ryan appeared and shook his head before taking in his surroundings. Just the sight of the giant toad was enough to help start to settle Manish’s thoughts. “Hey, um, buddy.”
<Oh hey. So’s this one of those new places?>
“Uh, yeah. I um, I figured it wouldn’t be much longer still something attacked me. So…”
<Aw, so you needed your good buddy Ryan here to protect you!>
Manish rolled his eyes, but didn’t deny it. “Come on, I want to go see what’s over that next uh, hill?”
<Solid deflection. 10 outta 10.>

At least Manish was able to take comfort in knowing he was right. Just as they crested the hill, they were approached by a pokemon. Or, well, Manish assumed it was a pokemon. Really it was just a couple of gears with eyes. “Really? Gears? Is that, I mean, come on. At least the rest of you are, you know, based on animals?”
Ryan rolled his eyes, used to Manish’s rants about the design choices. <You say that like Julia isn’t just a keyring.>
“That’s…yeah okay. That’s fair.”
The Klink let out a metallic sound and Manish was reminded that, oh yeah, they were supposed to fight the thing. “Right, um, Ryan? Care to do the uh, honors?”
Ryan stepped between Manish and Klink <you know I’m always down to clown.>
“Weird choice of words. But, yeah, okay, um. Use Vine Whip.” Manish didn’t see any reason to get too wild with the attacks. Not against some gears.

Because all of Manish’s pokemon were prone to commit acts of violence, Ryan didn’t hesitate to shoot out his vines and whack the Klink. It let off another awful metallic noise before the two gears rubbed together, sending a shock of electricity out to hit Ryan.
“That, huh. New question. So, you have the vines and leaves and stuff, that makes sense. Right? Like it’s, you know, uh, a part of you?”
Ryan barely jumped out of the way of another shock. <Little busy here, bud.>
“And I guess that thing rubbing it’s gears together makes, uh, static? Or something like it to attack?”
<Manish, can we focus up?>
“And I guess Cereal is, well, Cereal. But what about like, some of the water pokemon? Do they just have water in them to attack with? And how much? Can they run out? Is there a finite amount in there?”
<Is this really the biggest concern right…wait, you know the word ‘finite’?>
Manish frowned. “Why is that surprising? I know a lot of, uh, words?”
Klink tried to attack again, but Manish and Ryan just side stepped the attack to continue their conversation.
<I guess you do, I dunno, that one just feels smart?>
“Hey! I’m smart!”
<No, wait, that’s not what I meant. Course you’re smart, bud!>
“I feel like I should be offended.”
The Klink let out an angry metallic noise and Manish glared at it. “Excuse you, we’re having a discussion. Ryan, use Razor Leaf. And I am so smart! I even got into that weird ethical class! It’s a college level class!”

Still distracted by the argument, Ryan fired off some leaves but really wasn’t paying attention to where they were going and just barely scraped the Klink.
Manish and Ryan continued to bicker and the Klink wasn’t having it. It was supposed to be the center of attention right now, it was the attacking pokemon! Fed up, the Klink spun it’s gears faster and faster, building up more power. Neither Manish nor Ryan noticed since they had completely devolved into just staring at each other. Klink used this distraction to his advantage and fired off a huge build up of electricity and blasted Ryan.
There was a sudden bright light and Ryan went skidding backwards while Manish tripped backwards and landed on the ground with a loud thump.
<Hey! We’re busy here!> Ryan yelled, turning back to the Klink. That hurt. That really hurt.
Manish felt like his mustache was singed off and ran a quick hand over his face to make sure everything was still in place. “Um, maybe we should uh, deal with that, uh, first?”
<Yeah, yeah alright.>
“Go ahead and use Tackle?”
Ryan was annoyed by the interruption from the Klink and had no problem with throwing his entire body on top of the gears.

Another rather ineffective attack from Ryan and a slightly more effective attack from the Klink and Manish and Ryan looked at each other.
<Soooooo…>
“Here’s the thing, uh, I know you are all about, um, fighting?”
<Oh, well, I’m not Lucy. Fighting’s just a hobby.>
“Thoughts on uh, maybe looking at the shrine? It’s uh, I hate it?”
<Hmm, a shrine you hate or a Klink that hates us?>
“Yep, those um. Those do look like our, uh, options.”
The Klink started to charge up again for another attack and the two looked back at each other.
“Run?”
<Run.>
With that, Manish and Ryan took off in the opposite direction, back towards the Shrine Manish fled from earlier, Klink hitting them with a final zap as they ran.

“Do we really have to be back here? I mean, we could just accept the uh, the loss? And you know, not fight the weird gear thing that is weirdly strong?” Manish complained as he followed behind the recently healed Ryan.
<Don’t be like that, man. It was a fluke! I’ve fought things way way bigger than that and was totally fine. Come on, we can totally do this. I think it was right over this hill anyway.> Ryan tried to encourage Manish. Judging by the amount of stress mushrooms that were sprouting up around Manish’s feet, though, his speech wasn’t doing all that great of a job.
“I guess, but like, we can just avoid this place? For forever? It kinda gives me the uh, tingles. Bad tingles. You know?”
<Nope. Not a clue. Look! Over there!> Ryan pointed with one of his vines, <that’s him! Hey Klink, hey! We’re back and probably almost definitely not going to lose this time!>
Manish groaned and followed behind. “Yeah, super inspiring. Just uh, just do Razor Leaf?”
Ryan braced his thicc legs and smirked at the Klink <You’re toast. Or, well, not toast. Cut? Leafed? Something like that.> He pondered what kind of catch phrase he could use as he launched leaves at the Klink.

Okay, Manish had to admit that after that last attack the Klink was looking pretty rough. Sometimes he forgot that despite him being the trainer, Ryan was good at this fighting thing. So was Lucy. And all his pokemon for that matter. He couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride for them. Even with him as the huge hindrance he was, he couldn’t hold them back from how great they were. “You’re doing uh, awesome, Ryan! Um. Oh.” He grimaced as Ryan was still hit with another electric attack. That couldn’t have felt good.
Ryan for his part did his best to shake off the attack. It wasn’t like it was the worst thing he had ever been hit with. And he had a point to prove about fighting or something. He kind of forgot what he was trying to convince Manish of. <No worries, I got this. Next up!>
“Right, um. Okay, so uh, is Solar Beam too mean? I feels mean, uh, we did kind of blow a hole in. Um. Multiple buildings with that. Okay no, never mind not that.” Manish mumbled, but Ryan was already on the move.
<Use Solar Beam, got it!>
“No no no no, that’s not no!” He tried to stop, but Ryan was already summoning the light into his fungal bulb to blast at the tiny, definitely undeserving Klink.
<We’re going nuclear!> Ryan yelled.
“Please don’t!” Manish responded but only watched in horror as the blinding light of Ryan’s beam blinded him.

After all was said and done, all that was left behind from Ryan’s Solar Beam was a scorched earth, weird fuzzies in Manish’s eyes, and what looked like a dead Klink. Manish frowned as he approached the gears. “I think you got it.”
<Told you I could beat it.> Ryan puffed up his chest.
“You uh, you sure did.” Manish patted Ryan on the head before approaching the slightly sizzling Klink. “Geeze yeah, you um, you really did a number on it. So uh, man, I should probably catch it and take it to get, uh, healed? Geeze you really made it extra crispy.”
<Thank you!> Ryan beamed.
Manish didn’t have the heart to tell him that it wasn’t a compliment as he tapped the poor thing with an empty pokeball.
