OUT OF THE GAME Your daily routine goes something like this. 01. Wake up at god-knows-how-late in the afternoon, and stretch your body, watching the light of the afternoon sun stream across the maelstrom you once called a bedroom but is now all you really know at this point. a. Debate whether to get up and face the day, or whether to just lay in bed like you always do, letting another day slip past your fingers like sand rushing through an hourglass. Eventually, you do get up, if only to satisfy the gurgles of your stomach, begging for a meal you slept through, like always. You wonder if you've gotten used to this by now. ... You push the thought out of your mind. 02. You make your way to the kitchen, once pristine and glistening with whatever cleaner your father decided to use that day, now smeared with grime and grease from the time you tried to make something simple, but found yourself feeling exhausted from even trying to cook. Speaking of cooking, what are you going to eat? Are you going to be like your mother, and eat something healthy, like those trendy salads she'd always promote on her blog and yet only eat once? Or are you going to be like your father, and just eat a simple meal, a hearty meal that would fill your stomach, something that would make you shudder at how many steps it took to make something that seemed so simple and would make you feel tired even just looking at what mess you made this time. ...you just decide to get a TV dinner from the freezer. a. You take out a random box, look at what it is (fried chicken, corn, a brownie, some mashed potatoes), look at the instructions and, after setting the oven and doing what the instructions request you to do, slide it into the oven and set a timer for the allotted time plus two minutes. You learned from the last time you tried to cook one of these for the allotted time. If only your parents could see you now...no, in fact, you don't want them to see you now. You don't want them to see you as you are now - living in their house like you always have, feeling isolated and alone in a mansion that feels more like a prison, spending all your days sleeping or just eating frozen food when you even remember to eat. They'd probably scoff at you. They'd probably call you a bad daughter or something. ...Arceus, this timer is going so slow. You need to pass the time. You need to get out of this constant loop in your head. A small smile creeps up your face at the thought of what you could do. There's only one solution to this dilemma. My Pokemon Ranch time. You immediately make your way to the sitting room. The Family Wii sits politely on the TV stand, just waiting for you to turn it on, its custom shell glittering in the light of the LEDs. You still wonder why your parents spent their money on this...but, you don't really question their judgment. To them, it must have just been a novelty buy, but this little console means everything to you. 03. You boot up My Pokemon Ranch and are greeted with your boxed Pokemon, the Pokemon you had spent hours collecting as a kid, hunched over your DSi and playing Diamond at the quietest volume you had in order not to wake your parents up. It's nostalgic in that sense. And even though your parents bought you a Nintendo WorldScreen alongside UNOVR to give you something else to do, in order for you to 'be a productive member of society and do something with your life', you always like to come back to this little game when things feel...stressful. It's just nice seeing the little guys walk around and enjoy life...something you feel like you could never do. You pick up the Purugly you got on GTS when it was still active, trying to complete your Pokedex by trying to talk with strangers your 'perfect' mother and 'perfect' father wouldn't even approve of and failing miserably. You smile at the nostalgia. It feels like hours have passed before the timer beeps. Looks like your dinner is ready...or is it lunch? Breakfast? You don't really know. But you know that you're hungry and need to eat something. So, you pause the game, head upstairs and take out the disposable tray filled with goodies. 04. You opt to eat in front of the TV today, letting the tones of the Wii echo as you dig into the pretty good mashed potatoes and chicken, watching the Pokemon wander by, letting your thoughts wander by. Maybe you should hop on UNOVR today. Get out of the gilded cage by false means. Yeah, that's what you'll do!...right after you finish eating. What does the game mean to them? UNOVR, to Robin, is just another means of escapism. It's a place where she feels like she can be free to try and socialize with people and see the outside world, even if in reality, she's still stuck in a mansion which feels like a prison.

INSIDE THE GAME A caterpillar, when it has grown big enough, surrounds itself with a chrysalis and becomes a butterfly. And, much like this metamorphosis, Robin, when surrounded by the chrysalis of UNOVR, becomes the player known as butterfly. Metamorphosis results in drastic changes to appearance. With mods to give the model ears and tail akin to a snow leopard, and with a all around appearance of 'soft, yet ethereal', butterfly appears to be a stark contrast to the almost tired and ruffled appearance of Robin, with their outfit choices even being very different. Metamorphosis can result in changes in behavior - the form has changed, and thus, so has the self. butterfly and Robin, as two sides of the same coin, have notable traits that are shared between them. Both are meek and both are awkward when socializing with other players. However, the notable difference between the two is in how butterfly interacts with the world around her, including her Pokemon. She interacts with the outside world as if it has been forever since she has explored a cityscape, or moved through a forest, and talks with her Pokemon as if they were new people she wanted to interact with. This can be heavily contrasted with Robin IRL, whose interactions with the world are few and far between, and if she does interact with the world, it's very...stilted. As if she doesn't know what to do or how to act.
