"I'm just going to log on and do like, one quest, okay? I swear, it won't be long, and we can go to the mall after."
Promising his twin the mall in exchange for a trip into the game is easy. Derek can hear the contemplation before finally a grumbled agreement.
"Kay, cool. See you in a bit, I'll text you when I'm done."
After a few playful jabs Derek hangs up. The phone call is dropped and Derek excitedly takes a seat and pulls on all his gear, entering the world of unovr and excitedly making his way through options. Once his screen loads, he checks through things he hasn't done. Available quests and the like. He clicks on the one with the rival, deciding that he has to get a battle in someplace.
Instead of going to the marked location for the quest immediately, Derek puts his feelers out for somebody to join his party. Because he has a grass type only and that'd be a quick loss. He wants to try and win the round, thanks.
Without having to capture other pokémon, anyway.

Despite his name, the firepower behind TheMorningStar was somewhat lacking. It would be more accurate to call it grasspower, actually. So he had originally decided on skipping the rival tutorial battle, having done his research on what type pokemon the rival had. That had been before he had hopped on the game, however.
Seeing someone's request for aid with the tutorial battle, though... It caused a mix of feelings. Partially, he felt disappointed in his own lack of initiative. It could have easily been him reaching out for help if he had been brave enough to do so. But... More than that, he wanted to help someone who was in a similar position to himself. It was doubtful that anyone would want his help, but he'd offer. The worst that could happen... Well. He didn't want to think about that. It was unlikely that his offer would be accepted, in any case.
Derk_TheJerk has received an offer from TheMorningStar to join parties and face the rival together! Meet up with TheMorningStar ?
There is an attached voice message: "Uhm, hello, I don't know how much help I'll be really, though I do have a pokemon equipped as tank but it's a Rowlet and I have no battle experience really, and... Well, I'm willing to help out regardless. If you want my help?"

"Oh, perfect." A tank would be useful even if it was another Rowlet. Sure, the rival definitely had two pokémon himself, one chimchar and a blitzel. Really the prime pokémon starter to use would be a fire type. But maybe they could make it with two grass. So Derek decides, with a smile, to accept the request and fast travel next to the player. As he appears, he gives a wave, head tilting slightly in a welcoming manner as his ears stand on end, drifting a bit as his head turns. "Hey there. Um, I've got a Rowlet myself, but I've made mine a sweeper." He pulls his Rowlet, Apollo, to come out of his ball. "I mean, maybe me lose, but maybe we don't y'know?"There's a brief pause as he looks away from Apollo and to, TheMorningStar. "I'm Derek, by the way ... um, do you have a nickname I can call you by chance? It's a mouthful otherwise..." and some people were weird about nicknames.

TheMorningStar waved back awkward as much as he would in real life.
He uncertainly nodded along in agreement at the question regarding maybe winning maybe not, but smiled fondly at the sight of another Rowlet. "...Did you name your Rowlet? My partner here is Virgil. I actually almost chose Sweeper but... I thought that having him be more resilient could only be a good thing," He introduced the Rowlet sitting on his own shoulder. It was easier to speak about pokemon than to talk about anything else. It was definitely easier than talking about himself.
...Speaking of talking about himself. A nickname? Star simply sounded stupid, as did Morning. And Lucifer was a bit too much edge. Really, even TheMorningStar was a lot of edge if one didn't know it was based on his surname, Morgenstern. He could just say his real name, he supposed. "...Um, you can call me Ezra, I guess?" It sounded as if the other had given his own real name, maybe. "Oh, uh, nice to meet you, Derek," He belatedly added.
It wasn't like anyone would make the connection that Ezra was Ezra Morgenstern, son of rich Morgenstern couple. Even with his username, it wasn't as if it was common knowledge the Morgensterns had a child, let alone one named Ezra.

For Derek, it isn't completely strange to see somebody acting so docile even with a large amount of tattoos. Because he knows very well, that not everybody with a sleeve wants to bash somebody else's face in. At least, not from the two states he's frequented most. Biker thugs were some of the most fun people to be around. Not that sleeves and tattoos automatically meant biker thug relation, but anyway. "Ezra it is." Derek makes a note of it in the settings on his end of the game, that TheMorningStar is actually ezra. "Yeah, alright. Let's get started here... um, okay Apollo, let's give it our best I guess."Talking to a pokémon like it is a pet or a friend, companion even, was something Derek was still getting used to. Sure, it seemed easy when others did it. But to Derek, it is a bit of a challenge not to feel awkward. Maybe it's his settings, having speech set off... But Apollo understands, trills in response and fluffs his feathers to show he's ready, approaching the spot fo the question to start. > Hey!"Yipe!" Derek yelps and nearly jumps out of his skin as the rival approaches by jumping out of the fucking bushes like a maniac. > That's right, you! I heard you got your starters from Professor Ash too! Time to test our teams against each other. Go! Chimchar and Blitzle!!"In true rival fashion, out came a pokéball and from a stream of red appeared a Chimchar, beating it's small chest and letting out a 'mighty' roar. Derek can't help but think it's cute, but he quickly gets his head into the game by sending Apollo onto the field, looking to his companion and excitedly looking over his options, frowning. "Shit, he attacks first. Apollo brace yourself! Careful Ezra. Which of the two do you want to take, the Blitzle or the Chimchar?"Being that Ezra's Rowlet is a tank, the thought crosses Derek's mind that he should take the Chimchar, because his Rowlet would more easily be able to withstand the attacks. While Derek's Rowlet is a sweeper and could potentially knock the Blitzle's large tank class's attack down.

Ezra looks as spooked as Derek does at the sudden calling out from the rival, if more quietly so. He flinches back some. At least, it seems that Ezra and Derek are thinking along somewhat similar lines, for Ezra was about to suggest that Virgil could take on the sweeper Chimchar. Virgil could draw fire, quite literally in this case, while Apollo dealt with the electric equine. It was their best option, really. "Virgil, Chimchar is your opponent, okay?"
Though speech was enabled for Virgil, the Rowlet simply gave a determined hoot and got onto the field of battle, ready to tank the oncoming attack from the fire-type. Ezra, meanwhile, was trying to figure out the best way to view the interface in a fight.
When the fiery attack came from the Chimchar, Ezra called out immediately after, hoping this would prove effective enough even if it wasn't super effective. "Virgil, use Astonish!" A ghost type move was way better than a grass type move here. He could only pray it hit hard- He wasn't sure Virgil could take too many hits from the fire type, even as a tank. Seems as though their minds are made up and Derek quickly looks to Apollo, all too alert. "Blitzle's all yours."> Cute of you two to think ganging up on me's gonna help you any. Virgil HP Pre-Turn: 221/300The player flinched as if he was the one struck when the fire attack hit Virgil, but the Rowlet was still hanging in there. The Rowlet gave another determined hoot.
Ezra could barely pay attention to the rival's words. His focus was on defeating this Chimchar to help this other player. ...And maybe to help himself, to prove that he could do this in the first place. "Keep going, Virgil, I believe in you. Use Astonish," It was less of an order and more of a soft-spoken suggestion, but his partner listened. Once again using the ghost-type move. Watching his partner attacking for only a moment boosts Derek's moral. He's always been a follower more than a leader and more a lover than a fighter in his own life. But knowing that this other player is relying on him has him more pumped. It seemed silly, but he could sort of feel Apollo's determination, even as the rival's Blitzle goes in for another hit against the Rowlet. "Well done! Virgil HP Pre-Turn: 147/300 Ezra smiles shyly but brightly at Derek. "Y-Yeah! He exclaimed, voice soft but clearly enthusiastic. Virgil had enough HP to withstand this Chimchar and take it down, if... If his Charge didn't go wildly awry. If it did go awry, however, that would be very bad. Another round of fire would be difficult.
The player quickly contemplated his options, remembering a skillset he'd read. "Virgil! Use Astonish one more time on the Chimchar, but basic attack style!" He called out, sounding far more certain than before, though his voice was still relatively quiet compared to most people's shouts.
Virgil listened, moving close and then whacking at the Chimchar with the surprising ghost attack. It should be enough to finish the Chimchar off, with Chimchar's own self-damage taken into account. If Ezra was remembering things right. He really hoped he was. Virgil HP Pre-Turn: 65/300 Truth be told, Ezra was worried about fighting the Blitzle. Virgil was already pretty damaged... But he'd agreed to help. More than that, he wanted to help. He exchanged a glance with his Rowlet partner who gave a reassuring hoot. "Y-yeah, we'll back you up," He agreed, voice shaking with nerves and excitement both. He hadn't expected to get this far... surely they could make it a bit further.
He ran through some mental math. If the Blitzle attacked now, and then Virgil attacked like before... Yes, that should be enough to knock the Blitzle out, barring a particularly strong attack from the Blitzle. "Virgil, Astonish the Blitzle, Basic Attack Style, like before, once it attacks," He announced in his soft-spoken way.

"This is it, hold tight!" Unfortunately, the Blitzle doesn't switch targets like Derek had hoped. Instead, it goes for the kill, but Derek doesn't command Apollo to attack. Instead, Virgil shoots forward to attack the Blitzle and that move finishes it off, causing the Rival to immediately begin the, > No! No way! You couldn't have defeated me!And that sweet, sweet victory music begins to play. Derek's fist goes into the air and he grins, bouncing lightly in place with his tail wagging and his ears perked up in excitement. "Oh my god we did it dude! Yes! Oh, I so wouldn't have gotten that without you, seriously, thank you. Totes sending you a friend request," which he does immediately through a few basic commands and beams. A flush darkened Ezra's face at the visible excitement and joy that he had helped cause. The blush deepens as the other calls him his literal hero. I- I-" He stutters as he tries to respond but fails to find an adequate. Inevitably, he accepts the friend request, and Ezra looks shyly delighted. It's not the same as having a friend in real life but this is a real person, not a virtual pokemon.
Cute as the animal ears and tail additions are on the other, Ezra is glad he skipped that option himself. If Ezra was even more expressive than he was normally... Ah, just the thought was embarrassing. This was already difficult.
He struggles for a moment to find words, but he eventually finds them. "I, well. I was originally thinking of skipping this tutorial, actually," He admits with embarrassment. "So, really, I, uhm, should be the one... grateful to you. ...I would've never done this without..." Ezra trails off, uncertain of how to phrase his words exactly.
"...I think... I sort of, definitely, like helping people out. So... If you ever need help in the future, you can always message me, okay?" Ezra offers with a shy but sweetly sincere smile.
"Uhm, only if you want to, of course," He hurried adds as his nerves kick back in, not wanting to put any pressure on the other. Just because Derek was excited in the heat of the moment didn't mean he wanted Ezra around in the future for certain.

"My dude, you're like wicked strong, of fucking course I'm going to be calling on you in the future to help me fight the baddies." Derek's excitement is at it's peak, causing him to give punches in the air and because of the flavor of his class, little flowers bloom with each punch's completion.
He notices Apollo's excitement, but also his heavy breathing, and scoops the little Rowlet up into his arms for lots of gentle pats. To which Apollo pretends he doesn't need, even if his chest is vibrating and his feathers are puffing up in delight.
But Derek does this, focuses on Apollo and glances at Ezra only every once in a while, because he understands Ezra's nerves. Talking to people is hard, but a battle like that? He feels comfortable enough to be friends.
"Really though, no sweat. I agree, without our combined teamwork we wouldn't have done nearly as well as we both did. And our Rowlets really seemed to work well together there at the end."
Derek gives a thumbs up, smiling at the other player.
