Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

He had gotten the popup about designing his own home or area for the growing community, and he was still pondering what he would make. Deciding to do some research, he was exploring the settlement, his new partner by his side. "Do you have any ideas on what to make?" he asked the Chikorita. "A big garden with lots of flowers!" she exclaimed immediately, and he chuckled. Of course the little grass Pokemon wanted someplace with lots of flowers. "Maybe a public park or community garden, then," he muttered, frowning slightly in thought. He had seen a couple smaller green spaces and a playground, but nothing that could truly be called a park. "Oh hey, what's that?" Startled, Beau could only watch his Pokemon dash off down an alley between two buildings. "Ah, wait for me!" he cried after a moment, starting to chase after her. What if she got hurt or something? They had only just met, he couldn't stand if something happened to her so soon! ENTERING THE TALL GRASS! When a Wild PKMN appears, reply using the ~~ATTACK~~ button to weaken it! But watch out— it might fight back! If your PKMN faints, you must go to the closest SHRINE to restore your PKMN. When the Wild PKMN's HP reaches 10% or below, up to 2 players may spend 25 BYTES to catch it here. You may also simply ~~retreat~~ to end the encounter. Beau Briggs

"Please don't run off like that without warning," he said, still somewhat startled. "What if you had been attacked by something or snatched by a NPC?" He had no idea if someone could kidnap Pokemon in this game, but he wouldn't be surprised if the possibility existed. "Sorry!" Chikorita chirped back, head leaf swinging from side to side as she pushed at a loose board with her foot. "But I really did see something go this way!" "Was it a person or a Pokemon?" Beau asked, crouching down for a better look. "A Pokemon, I think!" The building had been constructed poorly, and there were small gaps in between the boards making up the walls. Someone or something had clearly pried one of them loose and had went through the gap. His Pokemon seemed keen on following, and he winced as she shoved her head inside the widened opening. "Be careful!" Whatever was in there could attack, after all. C0D13

"Uh oh...I think I'm stuck." Small feet kicked up bits of gravel as she pawed at the ground, first trying to back out of the hole, then trying to go through it. "Yep, I'm stuck." Beau facepalmed. "Of course you're stuck," he muttered. it was just his luck that his Pokemon got wedged into the opening because of her own curiosity. "Alright, I'll try to pull you out, ok? On the count of three." Grabbing the back part of Chikorita as best her could, he took a deep breath. "One, two, THREE!" he called, pulling at her small body while pushing himself backwards.

"Glad I have reduced pain on," he mumbled, rubbing his head with a wince. The impact hadn't hurt, exactly, but it felt a bit weird. An indignant squawk came from above him, and suddenly there was an angry bird in his face, pecking at his head with a stubby beak. "Ahhh!" Beau yelped, trying to shield his face from the attacking bird. "What's going on?!" Chikorita called frantically, butt wiggling as she tried to free herself. "I'm being attacked by a bird Pokemon!" he shouted back, feeling the bird's wings hit his arms as it kept up the assault. He wasn't sure which Pokemon it was, but it sure was mad at him!

Or was there? Sure, he didn't think he could hurt the bird directly, but surely he could fight back somehow? Risking a quick glance around, he spied a couple larger stones nearby. Well, he was no rock Pokemon, but he could throw a stone in a pinch. Waiting until just the right moment, he pushed the Pokemon away with one arm and dove towards the stone, grabbing one as he managed to roll over onto his back. "Take this!" he cried, throwing the stone as hard as he could towards the diving bird Pokemon. Hopefully he wouldn't miss, or he'd be a sitting duck for its next attack. To his relief, the stone hit the Pokemon square in the face, and it dropped to the ground a moment later, defeated. Beau lay there for a second stunned by the unexpected win, then cheered. "Alright, I did it! I defeated a wild Pokemon!" Probably not the correct way to do so, but hey, it had worked, so he was taking it as a win. Sitting up and tossing a Pokeball at the bird - he was totally catching it after that little adventure - he looked over as Chikorita finally managed to pull herself free with a crack of snapping wood, one of the wooden boards splitting apart. Beau winced at the sight. He didn't have the pay property damage, did he? Getting up and dusting himself off, he scooped up both the Pokeball and his Pokemon and said, "Let's get out of here! And no more running off!" "Okay, okay, I won't do it again!" With a pout, the little grass type added, "But I still want to know what went into the building..."
