Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

You arrive at the Pokemon Lab on the edge of a new frontier— miles of unexplored wilderness that hide secrets, corrupted Pokémon, and unknown potential. Outpost 1 is little more than a tent city encircling the Research Lab. Professor Ash, your region professor, has been studying the area with her assistants in preparation for receiving new explorers. As you are teleported from the starting screen into the Lab, a tall woman with sleek silver hair straightens up from her desk. "Perfect timing," she says, cool and collected. "I just received your details. Valentine, was it? I gather you're here to apply for your Starter Pokemon." Your eyes are drawn to the display case behind her, where 24 sealed Pokeballs wait quietly behind the glass. Picking up a clipboard, Ash gestures for you to take a seat across from her at the desk. "Before I assign you a partner, I need to confirm a few details of your personality," she says, tone measured. "Pokemon are complex creatures. It's essential to match them with their trainers correctly. If you don't mind, I'd just like to ask you a few questions." She clicks her pen, offering you a reassuring smile. "Don't think of it like 'an interview.' Think of it like... a game." Valentine: REPLY TO START THE INTERVIEW!

Maybe it was her tall frame, or her formal speech, or the way she had emphasized the word questions, but something about the woman rubbed Valentine the wrong way. It didn't matter, though, not really. Whatever she personally thought of Professor Ash, the Professor was the one who would be giving out her first ever Pokemon, and that was an important step in the right direction, the official start of her own Pokemon adventure. She could survive chatting with an intimidating academic if it meant finally getting a Pokemon of her very own--after all, her travels would likely lead to much more dangerous situations down the road, and she wasn't scared of that! It did seem like a lot of pressure, but it's not as though there was a bad starter Pokemon. Well, maybe one of the ones that couldn't attack at all, but that wouldn't happen, right? And the Professor said to think of it all as a game, after all. And Valentine liked games. "Yeah, let's get started already!" Valentine's words were strong and sure, not betraying any of the uncertainty or hesitation that had been running through her mind. "Game on! Or whatever."

Weighty ones. Well, the first one was weighty, anyway. Valentine hadn't gone into this expecting to have to think this much. "Advice for my younger self... hmm..." Valentine had to think about that one for a moment. "I guess just, don't stress that much, or something? It'll all work out. Yeah, that seems like good advice. Though I imagine I'll have better advice down the road--after all, my adventure's just getting started!" "Then, uh, studying for a test... I mean, I'd make sure to read the textbook and my notes from class and all. Assuming it's that kind of test, anyway. But really, I've always found studying easier with friends! Get together some flashcards and pool your notes and turn that studying into a party!" (Logan, for his part, had never actually tried studying like that, but it sounded nice enough.) "And, about the sandwich..." Valentine's cheeks turned almost as pink as her hair as she weighed her words carefully. "I think it depends? I mean, there's a difference between dropping it on a tile floor that's just been cleaned and dropping it in, like, a litterbox. And also how long it's been, though there's probably no saving that litterbox one, really. But sometimes they can still be salvaged. Especially if it's a really good sandwich." Oh man that sounded awkward. Was she going to end up with a Pokemon as ditzy as that sounded? Well, it'd be what she deserved, after all...

She treats each response with the same level of professional seriousness, as if even Valentine's specific dichotomy of tile floor versus litterbox was significant in her calculations. "Thank you, Valentine," she says simply once the player character is finished. She checks the time on a thin wristwatch, tapping her chin with the end of her pen. "That's all the data I need for now." She tears off the sheet of paper she was writing on and swivels in her chair, standing up in a smooth, fluid motion. She crosses to the display case, unlocking it with a satisfying click. After consulting her notes one more time, Ash selects a single Pokeball from the case and returns, settling back at her desk. "Based on your personality profile, I've determined this will be the ideal starter Pokemon for you," she says, tone even, then sets the Pokeball in your hands. Valentine hadn't been expecting that... but then she wasn't really sure what she had been expecting. Valentine wasted no time in letting the owl Pokemon out of the Poke Ball. The Rowlet was female, which Valentine definitely hadn't been expecting--the odds were against that, right? Maybe it was a good sign. Maybe it was all meant to be. At any rate, just watching the Grass-type waddle around the lab was enough to bring a smile to her face. "Hey there, little Rowlet!" The Rowlet looked up immediately and took a few steps towards Valentine; Valentine, for her part, crouched down so she was closer to the Pokemon's own eye level. "You're coming with me on a big adventure! Exciting, right?" "Yeah!" Valentine startled a bit at that, though logically she shouldn't have--it was one thing to know that Pokemon spoke, and another to actually hear one speak, apparently. That was her very own Rowlet, talking back to her! How cool was that? Valentine chuckled a little before replying. "I'm glad you agree! Now, I want to give you a nickname... how about Nova? It means new, and this is all new to me, after all. Plus it reminds me of the stars, and I like that--and I can call you my little super Nova! Because I'm sure you are super!" Nova giggled a little at that, but the giggling soon gave way to nodding. "Sounds good to me! I'm looking forward to getting out there and checking out the world around us!" Valentine stood up and stretched her arms, a wide grin forming on her face. "You and me both, Nova! You and me both..."

You spawn in AREA 1: ASPER, the forefront of a growing civilization. Your body feels strange, calibrating in stages as your information loads in. Small, standard icons augment your vision if you choose to see them, providing helpful tooltips to help you orient yourself in the game. You find yourself in a black carriage, another randomly generated player seated across the cabin from you. Dark horse Pokemon pull the carriage, vapor puffing from their lips. Choose your starting location: Route 1: Birchwild Grove, a charming woodland locked in perpetual autumn Route 2: Misty Timberland, an old-growth forest wrought with shadows, and secrets. Route 3: The Surge Steppes, rolling yellow plains offset by spires of wrought iron. As you adjust to your new surroundings, a notification blinks on your minimap, marking the location of the unnamed STARTING SETTLEMENT. With another player, proceed to the marked city by navigating your chosen route. You may encounter NPC's, wild Pokemon, or other challenges along your journey.
