This is her fourth time back in Everworld, and this time she almost feels numb.
It wasn't like the first time where she sacrificed Glacia. She couldn't really understand their words, she couldn't hear what they were saying. But they were willing, and she fought tooth and nail to climb those frozen platforms.
It wasn't like the second trip either. She went out with Marina, refusing to let the Pokemon heroically sacrifice herself like her first all alone. Bouncing headfirst into danger, knowing there would be no way back asides from a trial where she ended up having to create a whole new body from clay while freezing and nearly drowning.
And it certainly wasn't like the third trip where she rescued a Magikarp from the afterlife. She's affectionately grown to call them Tabby, and they're just as feisty as she imagined they would be.
No, this was different from all three past cases.
This wasn't just rescuing her favorite pokemon, or diving into the afterlife because that's what she had to do.
She was rescuing her baby. Glacia called her Momma, and it stuck into her heart like an arrow. After the raid, Laguna didn't even log off. There was no break or celebration party of a victory well fought for. No, as soon as the danger was gone and she watched Glacia's literal spirit fade from Moltres's flames, she went to the Everworld.
"Seta," Laguna spoke, unable to look into the figure's face this time. Or rather, their lack of a face. "Glacia's waiting for me. I promised I would come for her. She- She might have been willing to sacrifice herself, but I'm the one who pulled the trigger."
She'd pause, ever so slowly looking up, dried tears remaining on her face. "Seta... I'm tired of this. Without her sacrifice, we might have lost everything. Moltres lost to corruption, the entire settlement gone, but... I feel selfish. I don't even know if it's painful, I don't know what it's like to be a spirit. I'm sorry I-"
Her hands at her side unconsciously clenched together, tensing up as she paused to take a breath. "Is it wrong of me, to want to convince her to be less heroic? Less selfless? More afraid of death? I don't even know how to handle this, I just- I guess, I'm just scared that sometimes it might be the only answer, and that reality scares me. I know it's not your job to answer my questions, but I don't expect you to say a word."
"Just, please," Tears began to fall once more, despite her best efforts to remain strong. "Take me to my baby. I'll keep her safe, I swear it."

Seta regards you carefully. Neutrally. Nothing softens, nothing cracks. Ironically, the only thing to never change in the Everworld is the Gatekeeper— but of course, that rule holds true only for those who leave.
Seta does not give answers. But they can give affirmation.
"You are right to be concerned."
The words are simple.
"To take a spirit from the Everworld is to teach it understanding of something eternal. Immortal. Fear is erased, replaced with faith."
Seta moves down the hall beside Laguna, leading her to a door-shaped hole in the wall.
"But fear is what guides mortals. Without it, in confidence, we fade. Our steps grow tangled. The way back is lost, and a new one must be found."
You pass through the darkness. It's as brief as blinking, and you find yourself in a new world.

It was both comforting and terrifying to have Seta confirm her fears. To leave Everworld once, meant they knew what awaited them in the end. A chance to be reborn, again and again and again. But at what point were they the same? At what point did that lack of fear change them?
They never left the Everworld unchanged... But for once, Laguna found herself wishing she knew how the path would go before she set out on it.
But if a fear of death wouldn't guide you through life, what would?
She dried her tears, rubbing her eyes and nodding at Seta. "I'll... take care of her. I'll take care of my baby. Just- I know her. If she does end up back here again, after this... Please be kind to her. "
And with that, she finally pressed through the darkness.

Sand. It had to be sand. She awakens kneeling on the black sandy ground, her fingers digging into the uneven ground and watching the black grains of sand filter between her fingers as she lifts her hands back up. She expected it to be hot, burning to the touch, but a brief look at the sky told her it wasn't quite day yet.
She should get going before the sun rose and burned her as she walked.
Standing to her feet, Laguna took a few deep breaths as she calmly examined the situation. There were no rushing waves, no constant chase, just footprints as far as the eye could see.
Thousands and thousands of footprints. Was Glacia one of them? How could she tell hers apart from all the others? Bergmite's had such tiny feet, she'd need to be extra careful searching.
But there had to be a catch, didn't it? Just tracking down her Pokemon's footprints and following them didn't make sense. Where was the challenge and trial in simply walking? Climbing over dunes, maybe, but just walking didn't seem to carry that same danger she's felt prior.
Maybe... it was different.
"Like Tabby..." Laguna mumbled to herself, as she carefully skated across the surface of the sand, looking at all the footprints. Rescuing her Magikarp from the Everworld wasn't dangerous. It just took time, effort, and dedication.
Maybe there was a lesson in that after all.
"Don't worry Glacia, Mama's coming."

Laguna had swiftly realized that the day never seemed to come. It would remain this peaceful dawn for eternity unless something changed. An emptiness as far as the eye could see, asides from the thousands of footprints. There must have been so many Pokemon here before her, a land so vast they might never meet.
Just how many Pokemon had been sacrificed in the game already?
At the bottom of the next dune, Laguna sighed and laid down for a moment in thought. Her Bergmite's footprints were so hard to spot, it was as if they might not even exist in this empty void. But it wasn't truly empty, was it?
The dunes stood tall, like semi-solid waves across the endless landscape. Laguna figured there was nothing better to do than climb up one and see what was around if anything at all.
As she moved to stand, she found herself sinking slowly into the sand. Her body had lowered down about an inch into the black sand, and the realization immediately had her jump to her feet and brush the sand off her body as she shouted. "Merde! Oh, no no-"
She'd climb the dune slowly but surely, but the realization hit her like a freight train. If she ever stopped, the desert sands would sink her right in and claim her.
"Looks like there's no going slow, and taking my time," Laguna mumbled to herself, sighing in frustration as she scrambled up the side of the dune, her hands digging into the sand as she scaled its side to finally reach the top.

Finally at the top of the dune, Laguna gently paced down the other side to keep moving as she looked around. More footprints as far as the eye could see, but something finally stood out amidst the endless sea of sand.
Glass.
At the top of the dune, all the way to the bottom and then some, was a long trail of melted black sand, glass reflecting and refracting the dim light in the sky. It didn't make any sense why it would be here, but it was better than wandering around aimlessly, following footprints of Pokemon that weren't hers.
At least now, she could follow something that seemed out of the ordinary. It was as if something hot slid down the sandy dune, like a burning hot hockey puck and-
"Oh my god, Glacia." Laguna suddenly leaped forwards, her own Freezer abilities allowing her to slide straight down the dune like she was surfing a wave, leaving snowflake particles in her wake.
Last she saw her Bergmite, she was glowing, burning with the power of a mighty phoenix, Moltres. She shouldn't have presumed that had changed. There were still things about this game that she couldn't predict.
And so as soon as the force of her slide stalled, she picked up the pace and ran as fast as she could, climbing up the next dune to follow the next trail of glass.

Laguna had been here for what felt like hours. It was impossible to tell if it had actually been hours or mere minutes. With her mind in the game, anything could be true with the stories she's heard. And yet, her legs ached as if she had been running a marathon.
"It's just a game-" Laguna would remind herself, keeping herself pushing, moving, and never stopping. She couldn't afford to. The sands would swallow her whole if she did. "The pain isn't real, just like the first time. It's not real, I can ignore this. I'm rescuing my baby. I'm-"
It's not real.
Her 'baby' isn't real.
It hit her all at once, the combination of trying to use that fact to encourage herself, only for it to bring her down immensely. How cruel of a game to make her walk endlessly. Her, of all people.
It wasn't real.
But it mattered. This wasn't like any other video game, she couldn't just put it on pause, pick up another day. She couldn't dare do that to her Pokemon... especially not since she turned on Poke-speech. She could hear them, speak to them, they were intelligent beings, granted life.
And this was her chance to provide them with a trainer that loved them.
She didn't pretend to understand the psychology behind creating sentient beings, or a virtual world full of them. All that was beyond her. But she did understand, that this was a world hand-crafted by people, who wanted people to enjoy it. They wanted people to have fun, escape from a reality that didn't care for them, and to explore a world where they were heroes. To a world where they could experience the supernatural, and simply have fun.
And yet... She was so upset that Glacia had played the hero earlier, and volunteered to be sacrificed again. And knowing her, she'd volunteer again, and again, and again.
Laguna let out a long sigh, taking a few seconds as she slid down the next dune to just catch her breath and sigh, speaking to herself. "Glacia, darling... If you want to be a hero, I'll help you. Just don't keep breaking my heart."
Equipping her Trailblazer Kicks, Laguna left a trail of fire as she ran faster in between her snowflake slides, hoping to put an end to this Trial. The sooner, the better.

It was getting hotter.
She had to double-check that it wasn't just the exertion and sweat from constantly moving across the desert sands. As her hands dug into the sand as she climbed the next dune, following the glass trails, they began to burn her fingers.
A glance up at the horizon revealed that the sun hadn't moved up higher into the sky, but it did seem to be burning brighter, warming up the world around her. Was there a time limit after all?
She was growing exhausted and needed to take moments to catch her breath. Pausing for a solid minute to just breathe had the sand sink her in down to her ankles, but she had to take a break somehow. It felt like she had been going in circles, getting nowhere. There was something she must be missing, but there was no time to think about it when she had to keep moving.
And so that's what she did.
Kept running, walking, sliding, and climbing.
Over and over again.
Sure, she used to run cross country, but even she had limits. This virtual body's limits were entirely her own mental limits. What she believed her body could do, right? It wasn't real, she could do anything she could put her mind to. She just had to keep believing, no time to stress, no time to doubt, no time to fear.
No time to question-
Had the sun always been to her left? She could have sworn for the last half hour, it had been straight ahead of her. Had following the glass trail twisted her around that much?

It hit her all at once.
She had been looking for a glowing, burning spirit, blazing with the power of a phoenix.
They had been in front of her the whole time.
Laguna pivots away from the trial of wandering, winding footprints, and began running straight toward the sun. The heat intensified, burning hotter and hotter, threatening to melt her shoes to the sand she walked upon. And yet, despite her total exhaustion, the terror of stopping and sinking into the sands, it only confirmed her suspicions and the woman laughed.
She just laughed, grinning widely to herself as she kept pushing through. Kept moving. "Glacia!" Laguna suddenly yelled at the top of her lungs. "Glacia! It's me! Mama's coming!"
The sun didn't respond. It just grew bigger on the horizon, burned hotter. By all accounts, anyone reasonable should be running from the glowing ball of flames, that threatened to burn them up.
It was a funny thing that Laguna was so stubborn.
A wall of heat suddenly stopped her in her tracks, forcing her to cover her face with her arms and trudge through the sand. Never was she so thankful, that her attire didn't include cute sweaters, because she would have melted already. Suddenly equipping her Rainbow Flame Cloak, the feathers gleamed with shimmering color on her back, but it was swiftly moved to cover her face instead. The feathers were fireproof, not heatproof sure, but it helped immensely rather than just facing the source of the heat head-on, providing at least some shade.
She was just now walking blind.
"Glacia! Glacia! Where are you!" She shouted again, throat growing sore as she called out, over and over again, parched with a lack of water, and drained.
"Mama?"

That voice broke her heart, just like the very first time she heard it. Mama. She was Mama. Tears immediately poured down her face, only to immediately sizzle as they dripped onto the burning sands beneath her. She didn't dare remove her cloak, in fear that the intense heat to her face would cause her to stumble, and then sink into the burning sea.
"M-mama's here!" Laguna cried out again, struggling to push forwards, her legs shaking with every step.
"Mama!" Bergmite suddenly called out somewhere in front of her. "Moltres blessed me! I'm so strong now! I'm untouchable! Bad guys won't know what hit them!"
"Glacia... This power isn't meant to stay." Laguna blindly replied.
"What do you mean? Look at me! I'm so cool! I can burn like the sun! Those goo monsters won't be able to touch me!"
"B-but I can't touch you!" Laguna cried out, feeling an intense wave of heat suddenly pour out from ahead of her, and her knees buckled, nearly collapsing. "I can't look at you! I can't see you! Glacia, I-I can't-"
"But I'm so strong now. I can run and fight for forever. They can't hurt me anymore!" Glacia replied, but the excitement in their tone faltered almost instantly hearing their trainer's response. They had clearly expected a very different response to their new overwhelming strength. "I can be a hero, momma! I can-"
"You don't need to be a hero!" Laguna shouted out with every fiber of her being, suddenly feeling a dune in front of her that she was forced to climb. She was walking so slowly that her feet sank into the ground a few inches with every step she managed to make. "You don't need to be unstoppable! You don't need power! You don't need to be unkillable!"
"... But- But the corruption, I can-"
"No! No buts! You don't need to be anything!" Laguna desperately cried out, her hands having to dig into the dune to climb, burning away at her digits, but she had no choice. "G-glacia, you weren't born to be a hero. You were born, to just, be you. Please... Please come home. Please, let me hold you."
"Mama, I don't understand. Don't you want me to be strong?"
The power of the sun burned in front of her on top of the dune. Her exposed skin burned like the worst sunburn she's ever had, times two, but she keeps shouting even with every desperate step. "Glacia... You had faith that I would come for you. Please, have faith in me now. Just, come home."
Silence follows her words for nearly half a minute before a quiet, soft voice finally responds. "... Okay."
Laguna held out her arms from beneath the cloak in front of her and pushed forwards with everything she had left in her. As soon as she felt something burning hot press against the cloak, she wrapped it tightly around them.
And the world instantly plunged into darkness.

The world was silent, and the sands instantly cooled beneath her feet. She collapsed to her knees, but the sands did not attempt to swallow her whole.
She couldn't see anything, plucking the sun from its sky and darkness ruled the land. But never had total darkness felt so comforting.
"... Mama, I'm scared." A muffled voice came from her bundled-up cloak, and Laguna couldn't help but laugh. Exhausted, unable to hold herself back, she just laughed and cried at the same time. "Mama? Why are you laughing? I said I was scared." They sounded like such a little kid, like someone who needed a night light to sleep, not someone who had just been the literal sun.
"Being scared is a good thing, my dear." Laguna clutched the bundled-up cloak as tight to her chest as she possibly could, hugging her Bergmite, her baby. "Fear, is what guides us. Fear for ourselves, for others, for the world. Without fear, we're not ourselves. It's okay to be afraid... because I'll be afraid with you. And we can be the best heroes, together."
The burning heat in her arms from the cloak slowly vanished. The heat seemingly evaporated, replaced with a calm, cool, familiar air. It was like hugging an ice cube once again, but for the Freezer, this was all she could have wanted.
"Okay," Glacia mumbled, as the world slowly faded into total shadow, returning to the Everworld. "I'll trust you mama. I love you."

With the sun plucked from the sky, the world settles into comfortable darkness. The warmth of the dunes fades to a still greyness, heralding the approach of Seta.
"You have soothed the burning spirit," says Seta from somewhere nearby. "But that fire is not gone. Merely controlled."
The gray pushes close, engulfing Laguna and Bergmite. "You have passed the Trial of Sand." There is a flash of vermission as you find yourself back in the crossroads, standing beside an unmasked statue of a Bergmite.
Red gates fill the sky, and Seta is nowhere to be found, though his words echo in your mind long after you leave the halls.
"Nothing leaves the Everworld unchanged."
BERGMITE HAS BEEN RESTORED TO Laguna's BOX. Bergmite's Secondary Type is now
