SCENARIO: THE WISHING WELL
FISH YOU WELL Among the plethora of oddities and curiosities to be found in the Briarbane Settlement, few things seem more ordinary than the old water well. It looks like something straight out of a gothic fairytale… in the sense that its dark, grim, its roof is crooked, tiles are missing, and its stones are both marked by moss and discoloured by age. There is no bucket to be found, but oddly enough, a wooden sign has been erected right by the structure that seems to be robbed of both its purpose and intent. NO FISHING it once read. However, someone must have scratched over the ‘F’ and carved a ‘W’ in its place. NO WISHING. Curiouser and curiouser…
Even curiouser is the sudden notification that appears in the UI of those who decide to look towards the depths of this innocuous water well:
WISH WELL IF YOU FISH WELL, YOU GET YOUR WISH AS WELL Could this be a Hidden Quest?
Indeed it might just be, for within the well there is a vast expanse, and in its ink-like waters, Magikarp of colourful scales swim, shimmering in the dark with gorgeous iridescence. From time to time, something brighter appears; Starmie and Staryu darting through the waters like shooting stars in the night sky.
Fish at your own risk, but what will you wish for?

"Well it says no wishing, but it doesn't say no fishing," Big Bee said, taking out his fishing rod.
He peered over the edge of the ramshackle well, and caught a glimpse of flashing scales in the deep. Light glinted and sparkled in the inky water, like shooting stars breaking the night sky. Big Bee almost broke the rule right then and there "I wish I could-" He shut him mouth, the back half of the wish echoing in his mind. -watch this forever.
"That's not a good wish," he resolved, stepping out from under the crooked roof. Around the well was set ring after ring of blackened paving slabs. Time and moisture from the well had baked a dried layer of moss onto the once-white pavers, and now they leant a dingy, darkened air to the locale.
Some astronomy-minded soul had scratched the moss off some parts of the tiles, and then scoured lines between them, making gleaming 'constellations' amidst the darkness. Big Bee could make out Gyarados, Ursaring, and Kingler underfoot. "Whoa. I wish I-" he cut himself off again. -could make beautiful art.
"Nope! No wishing. The sign says it pretty clearly."
He eyed the quest prompt in his UI.
WISH WELL IF YOU FISH WELL, YOU GET YOUR WISH AS WELL
"Okay. Maybe one wish." He baited his hook and tossed a line down into the well, thinking about his family and friends. His mind lingered over his newly returned Taka. His starter, now a fully grown Blastoise! That boy had one hell of an appetite. "I wish for an amazing catch. Something wonderful for Taka. Something that'll make him happy he came back."

When fishing for wishes, why not wish... for fish?
...okay, that was goofy, even if it did portray Genesis' train of thought fairly decently.
See, clearly this quest, or scenario, or whatever it was, had some kind of fishing tie-in. Which would work out well enough for Genesis, being a Swimmer as he was... if he actually had a Fishing Rod. Not like he could just shove his Frogadier into the well, see what the Water-type could fish up, and call it a day. (For one thing, that seems like it might damage the well, which looked like it was in pretty bad shape already, and Genesis did not want to be the player known for causing all of UNOVR to lose access to the magic wishing well.)
But wishing for something specific, something tangible, seemed like the way to go here. It's not like the powers that be could really grant wishes like "I want to be happy forever", after all. But a new Pokemon, or a Fishing Rod, or something simple but handy like that? That seemed doable. It had to be big enough to not feel like a waste of a wish, though. It was still a wish, after all, and if those could bring about as much as the term seemed to promise, well, it would be wasted on something you could easily get in-game another way.
...like a Fishing Rod, he supposed. That was what Bytes were for, saving and then spending, after all. It wasn't his fault the guy who'd gone wishing before him seemed to be having so much fun fishing in the well's depths, or at least fooling around with his Fishing Rod, at any rate. Even though the sign had clearly said "No Fishing" originally. Part of Genesis wanted to grumble and groan about the lack of rule-following, but that part was outweighed by the part of him that would do the exact same thing in a heartbeat.
Genesis gazed into the well's deep waters, but he couldn't make out much in there, just a few stray sparkles amidst the murky black.
"I wish... I wish for a new teammate that's every bit as amazing as the fish inside this well must be."
A little flattery never hurt, did it?
Genesis didn't have a coin to throw in for good luck--which was probably for the best, given that this well was rumored to have actual living creatures in it, unlike the banal wishing fountains back in the real world--but he absentmindedly traced a circle around the moss that covered much of the well's stone before whimsically throwing a shining pebble in, in place of the coin he didn't have to spare.
Though he waited around for a minute or two after that, Genesis never heard the rock hit the bottom.

Manish was, well, he was ‘in a mood’ as Mother would put it. Really he was pretty sure it was moping, but what did he know? It’s just…things were getting hard. Back before UNOVR, back before anything, life was simple. He just spent his days haunting his parents mansion and waiting for something to happen. Now, though, now things were happening constantly. Even just walking through Briarbane things were different! He was pretty sure it wasn’t that long ago it was just a dusty gathering of tents and now it was a full blown town with a sketchy looking well. Wait, Manish came to a stop and backed up. That well was definitely new. And there was a little sign on it: WISH WELL IF YOU FISH WELL, YOU GET YOUR WISH AS WELL
Oh. That was interesting. Manish was good at fishing, like, way better than he thought he should be. Just ask all the Magikarp he was ignoring in his inventory. Plus he could really use a wish right now. But what to wish for? There were so many things he could hope for. Did magic wishing wells take abstract concepts as wishes? He was pretty sure that’s how curses happened. But. What if this one was different. Manish looked around him before staring into the depths of the well. Might as well (ha) give it a shot. He took out his trusty fishing pole and dropped it into the well. “I wish…um, well, is it okay if I just wish for a really nice day? Like, for me and my pokemon and maybe also for amanita ? If it’s not too much to ask? Just a good day. I think that would be uh, that would be nice.”

Jinx... still felt like she didn't know what she was doing in this game. She could recognize that the wishing well was connected to some sort of quest (or Quest, capitalized, for whatever that was worth), but she didn't know the significance of it, or whether she would know more about it if she knew more about the game lore in general. But it was connected to a capital-Q Quest, and that was enough to pique her interest.
"Well, I can follow the no fishing rule well enough, but if it really is no wishing now... I might have to break the rules just a little there." Jinx was just thinking out loud, punctuating her statement with a soft giggle at the end. If she had a Fishing Rod, she'd probably be just as willing to start breaking that rule as well, but she didn't, and truth be told getting one wasn't high on her priorities list. Magikarp didn't seem that exciting to her, even if they came in different colors or rarities or whatever.
As Jinx climbed up onto the edge of the well and sat there with her feet dangling into it, however, she saw some fish that looked a lot more exciting than just Magikarp in there...
"I wish..."
What did she want to wish for, really? Specifics were probably for the best, she knew--she'd read enough stories about mischievous genies to know that any vagueness could easily be turned against her. But Jinx... still didn't know enough about this game, and about Pokemon in general, to even have a specific idea what to ask for. Some kind of Pokemon, probably--her team was filling up faster than she had expected, but there was still at least one spot left in there, maybe more if she got something neat enough to be worthy of kicking out one of her current teammates--but beyond that... she didn't have a clue.
Which, oddly enough, gave her an idea. She didn't know a ton about the game yet, but there was one way to learn...
"I wish to get a really cool Pokemon the likes of which I've never seen, or heard of, even! Something that'll blow my expectations away and help me explore this world to my heart's content!"
Could a mischievous genie find a way to twist that against her? Almost certainly, sure. But it was worth a shot, at least. Besides, what was adventuring without a little risk to go along with it?

On December 31, Momo Matsushita signed onto UNOVR for the last time that year.
Her most recent checkpoint, the art museum, faded in around her, rebuilt step-by-step in a cascading waterfall of data cells. The effect was remarkable- Momo was impressed every time it happened. Strangely, it always seemed hazy in her memory after she signed off. Like something from a dream.
It was evening. Her Treecko, Kusa, was nowhere in sight. Momo turned on her heel and left the museum, catching sight of her reflection for a moment in the glass sliding door. Small. Cute. Pixie-like. Big eyes, flowers in her hair, and a set to her shoulders that projected confidence and power.
She made herself slump, glancing back over her shoulder, and headed out into the settlement.
There was a wishing well she didn't remember in the center of town. Momo stopped by it to read the sign, thoughts still tumultuous.
Can even I fish well? She'd gone boat-fishing before with her uncle, but he'd ended up doing most of the work. Momo peered into the depths to see how deep it was and leaned back on reflex, eyes dazzled by the sight.
The well was full of stars.
She baited the line and dropped it into the night sky, watching the hook sink down (or up?) into the cosmos.
"I wish for a pupil worthy of my teaching," she said solemnly, dangling the bait. And then quietly, "...and a friend."
Maybe next year.

Really he only had a couple of wishes that he could think of. The main one being that he wanted to wish that manish would be able to forgive him for the truth once he told him. Because there was no way that he wouldn't be able to tell him now. He wanted... To be honest. He wanted to be a good person. The good person that Manish already thought he was. So he cast his line and sighed gently. "I wish... for forgiveness..." And to be up to the standard that was already held so high. Even if it was just a little bit.

Valentine was fascinated by the well, by the colorful fish that dwelt within its depths, by the sign saying not to wish for anything and the Quest prompt that seemed to rather suggest wishing anyway. Was this going to be some sort of mad genie thing, where her exact words would be examined for any sign of a loophole, granting her wish but only in the most malicious way possible?
That seemed like an uncharitable assumption, though. The well looked nice enough, though admittedly Valentine wasn't sure what an evil wishing well would even look like. Besides, even if she did try to phrase her wish beyond any misinterpretation whatsoever... she would probably fail. She'd never been the best at that sort of thinking, in trying to survive those sorts of thought experiments. If the well was going to make a fool of her, well, then she would let it, because that would say more about it than it would about her.
Plus, she didn't have anything that nice and concrete to wish for. A million Bytes? That'd just feel like cheating, like speeding her way into seeming more accomplished in the game than she actually was. A rare Pokemon? Better, perhaps, but there were so many to choose from, and she'd either have to pick a specific one out of the untold possibilities out there or accept that what she got was up to the well as much as up to her own choice.
Actually, that sounded kind of nice. She was already trusting the well in breaking that "no wishing" rule and making a wish anyway. Why not just go for it even further? Why not trust the well to pick out something nice for her?
"I wish... for something that you think will make me happy. Something that will be fun and useful and just... good for me, overall." A smile broke out on Valentine's face as she added: "I'm trusting your judgment on this one, old well. I hope you don't make me regret it."

In the middle of the night, at one of the quietest hours of the Briarbane Settlement, a small figure approaches the old well, golden footprints being left behind with her every step. She holds onto ancient stone, gazing into a darkness much different from the one she's used to, and in it she sees a world of fantasy and wonder unlike any other.
Her own wish is whispered, a secret meant only for her and the well to know, but when it is spoken, the cosmos listens, and she becomes witness to what so many others have before...
Every time someone speaks a wish into the well, the well responds, the lights of the creatures dwelling within growing brighter and brighter — as if empowered by the desire expressed by those that gaze into these depths. They swim and swarm, forming beautiful nebulas and galaxies alike, and in their wonderous dance, images begin to form before our wishmakers' eyes...
Their wishes; each and every one of them.
Each and every one of them sees their wishes, each and every one of them hears the call of the well, and as the temptation to jump in grows, another notification appears before them:
WILL YOU FOLLOW YOUR WISHES?
