Árātō heard the charmander. Understood him as well, even. He just didn’t answer- if he knew where the shoes were, well, wouldn’t he have them already? Not that it mattered- the creature scampered away, thankfully.
To the trainer. And then they both started babbling.
Árātō rolled his eyes. But he hardly had time to be concerned with them- Not when his own life was spread out before him, an amalgam of styles and cultures swirled together. Even on the things that weren’t vibrant- The wooden desk, the headboard- There were carvings and golden inlays of wide winged birds, swirling flowers. Patterns and designs he recognized from his memories of childhood.
There was then a pang of homesickness, and Árātō took a slow breath-
Only for the other guy to shout, about a stupid pair of shoes. Árātō forced himself to take another breath, this one more calming. “Where do you keep shoes in your house, Josh?” He said in return, not shouting, because they were indoors. It was a simple principle, yes? “Have you tried looking there?”
Case in point, he opened the closet door. Nothing on the shoe rack looked promising- It all looked very… American style… But- then, there, a box caught his eye. Not because it was a shoebox specifically, but because it glittered unnaturally, one corner of it seeming to pulse with a sparkle of light every few seconds.
How… quaint.

Árātō stilled as he heard something break through the brush, waiting for the noise to subside before he started moving again. He wasn't much like how his mother described his aunt's side of the family- He had no desire to spend his entire life outdoors, sleeping in trees and eating food he'd caught himself.
But... that didn't mean he didn't try to be respectful of the creatures that lived outside. It was their home, after all, not his own. Here, he was the trespasser.

Árātō left Briarbane, finding solace in the active-quiet of the woods. Birchwild Grove- it looked like the woods he could remember, hazy watercolor-memories. He reached, taking one of the leaves between his fingers, feeling the leathery texture, the snap of it. It felt... real. He took in a slow breath- and the air felt smoke-bitter and sweet- and slowly walked through the woods.
The rustle of distant creatures, the shuffling of birds in the trees, the splashing of far-off rivers- It was all so familiar, and finally started to chip the harsh edges from his shoulders.

Árātō moved through the house with a quiet, steady gait. He didn’t rush, or debase himself. It wasn’t out of concern for keeping up appearances for the npc, or the other player- Árātō didn’t consider them much at all. It was habit, decades of decorum, and the irritation of the thought of a further mess.
The house was, impossibly, maze-like. In hindsight, this made sense- Rooms for all her “children,” all the hundreds of million of players. In reality, though, it was something he wondered at. MyHouse style hallways folded in on themselves, rooms opening into the floorspace of other rooms.
He paused before one, a shiny nameplate reading “Ruby.” The other rooms seemed largely untouched- beds made, things put away- but this one was messy. Not enough to concern- but enough to be lived in. Someone… lived here.
He kept walking- finally finding the room with his name. Árātō expected his room to be like how it was in the Old Country, or perhaps how it was now, in the States. But this room was neither- It was peacefully laid out, with only a few touches in red and gold. Árātō walked forward almost cautiously, eyes narrowed as he skimmed over the room. He brushed his fingers over the silken blanket, one he knew instinctively has hand-woven.
It was the pattern and style of his home, his family. The game had pulled it out of him- How much of this world was simply amalgams of other players?
Árātō turned slightly at the sound of claws against the floor, turning to look at the little charmander. “What is it?” He asked, imperious but not with malice. “If you’re looking for something interesting, there’s certainly plenty around… I don’t know how helpful any of it is…”

Árātō stepped into the house, pausing to look around- only for Josh Devlin to flop down onto the couch, and start chatting up Mom. She brought some strange food in- American shit, it looked like. He tried to not look disgusted, and only mostly succeeded.
But Mom and Josh mentioned his father being alive, which... Árātō pulled up the UI, swiping through to the quest description.
TUTORIAL 001 - PUMPED-UP KICKS
This... wasn't a plot that exactly said a parent was alive and well and successful. This described a parent dead, or in jail, or something worse. And no one ever had mentioned any sort of racing-anything, in any of the threads he'd looked up.
Something wasn't right.
"Mom..." He said, low and cautious. "Is Josh's father... alive?"
Mom stilled, eyes freezing on the wall behind the couch, flickering as if in REM. "He- I-" She took in a quick, sharp gasp-
And then blinked, looking at Josh, and then Árātō. "Oh, it's been so long since I've seen you both-" She said, warmly.
Árātō frowned, and shook his head. "This is a waste of time. " He dismissed, starting to stalk through the house. She had to keep the shoes somewhere- it was only a matter of finding where.

Árātō paused, frowning- surely this was a real house he could go into? But his thoughts were inturrupted by a squawk behind him, Árātō looking down to see a child. He was holding one of the starters- a charmander, the same one he had.
He'd done a modicum of research before jumping in.
Árātō frowned, eyes narrowing. This was an open world game, with a million-thousand places to go, and... some upstart claimed he was in the way. Josh Devlin- He didn't understand why people felt the need to use surnames in a video game. It wasn't real, and it was clunky besides. He huffed, a bit. "The door's locked," He said, a bit brusque. "So if you'll excuse the trouble."
Maybe- and it burned to think it- maybe his mom was right, for once. Kids these days.
There was a muffled sound from inside, and the click of the lock- and the door swung open, a woman looking at them both. "Oh- Árātō! Josh Devlin- Come in, both of you! I'll get lunch started. Oh, it's been so long since I've seen you!"
Árātō stilled as Mom reached out, clasping one of his hands in her own, before she bustled off to the kitchen. He blinked, looking at his hand a momen, before almost warily heading into the house.

Akimitsu wasn't used to games. He wasn't raised under a rock- he knew what was popular, he had accesss to internet, it just- his mother was never a fan, and there was always something more important: namely, his schooling.
This meant Árātō walked around a bit awkwardly, like walking in a swimming pool. But he did so with wonder, looking at the dusty roads, the wooden sided buildings. The saloon, the black fountain- all of it was studied, not scrutinized- simply regarded as if it was his first time stepping outside.
Árātō followed a path, trail worn, until his feet shifted from dry dust and the litter of tumbleweeds to soft grasses. He was in front of a house, small and charming in a Western sort of way.
Something flickered, in the corner of his sight- say goodbye to your mother!
Oh, was that- what he was meant to do? Was he given tasks and chores, here?
A building blinked, on the small map in another corner, and- it was the house he was standing before. Was he just to- to go in? That seemed rude...
So, instead, Árātō walked to the front door, and knocked. "Hello?" He called, pausing a moment for a response. Nothing. "...mom?"

OUT OF THE GAME Akimitsu had acclimated fairly quickly. It was a cultural shift, a stark difference from the Old Country he'd spent all his life in. New York was bustling and active and electric, and yet also peaceful and relaxed in a strange way. His first few weeks were relatively quiet- wake up, get breakfast, head to college courses in the morning, walk to the grocer to get things for lunch, online work in the afternoon and evening, make dinner, read a book, and go to sleep.
And then the third week started. And he was woken in the morning, every morning, not by his phone alarm, but a phonecall.
Akimitsu groaned softly, having woken gently in the two minutes before the call rang out, reaching for the phone tiredly. "Amal-"
"Khīnā, good morning- Did you rest well?"
Akimitsu took in a slow breath. "I did, amal, thank you." She had been calling every morning. It was never really about him.
"Your rendo- do you know what he's doing?"
"He's… still a doctor, I imagine."
"Your degree, khīnā, are you making progress with it?" Can you compare to your doctor cousin? Are you better than him yet? A tired resignation settled in him, and Akimitsu pushed himself out of bed.
"I-" A realization came to him. His mother, despite everything, would never in her life dare to come all the way to the United States. It was beneath her-
He was safe, here.
"I am, amal, but- I need to take more classes. It's much more indepth, here." He lied. Akimitsu lied, and it came so terribly easily. There was no knot of anxiety in his gut, no tensing of his throat. The words just… came out.
"Ah- is that so, khīnā? Aki- I'm so sorry. They should know better than to treat you like this." Her voice had gone syrupy, indignant.
"Mmh, I know." Akimitsu said, glancing at the calendar on his computer- saturday. No work, and no school. "I have to go now, amal. Amalndūr."
"Khīnāndūr, be well."
And, with a soft beep, the apartment was quiet again. Akimitsu sighed, tossing his phone at the bed, rubbing the back of his neck. He left the apartment, got breakfast, and returned. And went to AMZN, and clicked on the first thing that came up, boasting a sharp Christmas sale-
A Nintendo WorldScreen, bundled with UNOVR, a creature-collecting game. It seemed fun, and a time waster… and with any luck, would keep him from hearing any phonecalls. | INSIDE THE GAME Árātō means noble, like a lord or lady, and Akimitsu worked hard to make sure the character model look like him, but also reflect the name. He fashioned a brilliant outfit, white and midnight purple and gold thread. He pulled the distinctive red from his hair, electing for a softer blue gradient. And, in a fit of whimsy, added a pair of dark horns, luminous and glowing at the base.
Here, maybe, he wouldn't have to worry about being compared to family he had never met- Maybe here, Akimitsu- Árātō- could stand by his own merits. | FACE CLAIMS
