Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

It rose like a Home Depot obelisk out of the ground and punctured the churning storm clouds above them. "It's the only one that reaches high enough above the cloud line." They'd met up at one of the Briarbane taverns several hours ago, both players excited to see the shooting stars tonight, and had arrived at the Surge Steppes to see an endless expanse of slate gray. The clouds above them were broken only by the distant fuse-bursts of lightning. They'd set out into the grassland, hoping that the sky would clear. And then evening had fallen early, bringing with it the suffocating chill of a winter drizzle. The air was cold enough to tighten Sarah's lungs and she pulled her cloak tight. She huddled close to Druddigon, sheltering under his wing, and checked her watch. "Still plenty of time," she said, as much to herself as to her new friend. "The in-game clock says the meteor shower doesn't start for another four hours. Plenty of time to get up there." "Have you got a fire Pokemon?" she asked odile as the pair walked through endless banks of wet grass. "Or at least Kindler? It's going to get pretty chilly tonight."

Odile was going to chalk that up to excitement. It had been a blast to know Sarah, finally being able to sit and chat with another play was fantastic. Being able to connect with other folks was what she lived for. And only to be invited later to see a meteor shower in the game? How on earth was she going to say no to that? Those events were always better with someone else by your side to enjoy it. "Climb that one?" Odile pointed to the same one Sarah was referencing, biting her lip. Was she the best climber? No not really. She was physically fit, a natural occurrence when her job was literally dancing for hours every day. Climbing though? Just a bit difference from dance. Just a little. "I mean, we can definitively try, I'm just a bit worried about the rain..." Wouldn't things be slippery in this rain? Shudders raked her body as she held her jacket tight. Mercurio, her Froakie though? Loving it. Taking it like a... frog to water. He was happily by her side, letting the rain just run down him. "I wish, but I don't..." Odile bemoaned, watching as Mercurio took the lead. Either one of those things would be great right about now. She would love to huddle up with like, a Growlithe or something. "But, hey, at least one of us is enjoying the rain? Mercurio's liking it. I just wish I had an umbrella or something at this rate."

Once we get close enough there'll be plenty of handholds." Sarah said optimistically. She was full of excitement, and not even the oppressive rain could keep dampen her excitement at the coming meteor shower. She was like a lightning rod for good vibes. "Swimmer is a good idea, actually," she said, thinking about enabling it herself. "Staying all nice and dry. That might help for the climb actually. As long as you're not too cold." Sarah's Kindler powers kept her toasty and warm, but there was a distinct difference between being warm and wet and cold and dry. She and Odile were two sides of the same, unpleasant coin. Sarah thought about it for a moment before switching off Gardener and turning on Swimmer. Since the change to subclasses she'd been playing with her third a lot more. There was something freeing about having such wonderful powers at the touch of a button, and she'd honestly thought that staying dry would never have such a practical application! Instantly the air around her thickened, as the water sluiced off her skin and fell from her clothes like autumn leaves. She sighed out a cloud of sparking steam. "So why did you come tonight?" she asked, making conversation as they trudged North towards the pillar. "To the shower, I mean. What's the allure?"

But you know? That was a problem for the future Odile, the one that would stand directly in front of the pillar of steel. Present Odile? She was going to enjoy the journey there as much as she can. A smile began to peek out of the corners of her mouth, nodding along. "Trusting you then!" Cold? Yeah she was, but she vastly preferred this than to being wet and cold. She knew what it was like to be in a downpour with no umbrella, no raincoat. Absolutely miserable. No thank you, she would take being chilly any day of the week if it meant she wasn't slopping wet. As Sarah shifted subclasses, Odile's eyes widened, watching how the water just fell off of her with ease, steam arising from her mouth. "Oh wow... hey, now you're dry like me!" "Oh, is that even a question?" She would think the answer was obvious. "Isn't the meteor shower alluring enough? I've never seen one before in real life. I live in the city, so you can't even see the stars most of the time. Let alone some shooting stars. I mean, I've seen some in movies and stuff, but it's not the same you know? This is as close as I'm going to get, so I gotta take the chance, right?"

"I've got a little plan to get us up there nice and easily." They'd already crossed the majority of the grassland, with Sarah tucked under one of Druddigon's wings and the other wide open for Odile. Sarah even had her Charcadet out for extra warmth, and they passed it back and forth like a hot water bottle. "A lot of people just don't appreciate nature," Sarah said, jumping over a clump of knotted grass. "It's just...unusual to see someone so committed to seeing an event like this. Especially in this weather." She laughed, clearly poking fun at herself. As they walked she stuck her hands out from under Druddigon's wing and let them fill with water. She drank her fill of the sweet rain and rubbed them together for a moment, letting the friction and her powers dry them once more. "I'm from Hawai'i. Lots of gorgeous stargazing there, but only on the outer islands. The light pollution can be a bit of a pain, so you've really got to get away from people." She paused. "I guess that's true for anything, really."

If that was the case, then Odile had full confidence in Sarah. Even better! "I'm looking forward to seeing what you got in mind! I'm sure you got some tricks up your sleeve." Odile chimed, a light bite of a giggle ending her words. Her body shifted, sliding underneath the protection of the Druddigon's wings, noting the texture of the rough skin as the rain slide away. At first she was just that bit resultant to take the Charcadet from Sarah (it's her Pokemon after all) only to... shift from being reluctant to give him back. What a cuddle bug. "Heh, yeah I get what you mean. It's not the best weather for it, but well, I don't know when the next one will be. So might as well try. I'm sorry for dragging you out into this rain, but I think the meteor shower will be worth it." Admittedly, would Odile even come if Sarah hadn't tagged along? Maybe. She wasn't fully sure. The storm would make her think twice, but twice was not really enough. Until she got struck by lightning and yeah then it would be. Hawai'i. Oh Hawai'i. Oh it was such a gorgeous place. She had always admired the photos she had seen, the stunning seas and skies. "I've never met anyone from Hawai'i before, that's so cool. I hope it's as pretty as everyone makes it out to be. I'm from the other side of the country in New York, so trust me, I know the issues with the lights. City that never sleeps and all that." A shrug followed her words. "But hey, the only thing stopping us is this rain. I think that's a bit better than a bunch of streetlights we can't turn off."

Definitely too bright and noisy for me," Sarah agreed, as they reached the base of the tower."Give me clear skies and silent nights any day of the week." The earth around the steel spire was sunken, as if the rod had been plunged into the soil from above. Sarah had always imagined that they had grown upwards, protrusions from some tectonic event maybe, but both explanations seemed just as unlikely. The grass gave way to a knee deep slog through rainwater, but the Swimmer class kept her dry. It was an odd feeling, drying instantly underwater, like her skin was bubbling. "No light pollution out here, so instead of having to drive out into the country to see the stars we just have to climb...up. But here's the clever part," Sarah said, opening her UI. She tapped through to the subclasses screen and switched the Steeler. She was instantly soaked, but as Sarah pressed her hand against the steel of the pillar she felt it stick. She was magnetic. She pulled herself up onto the side of the pillar. Rainwater sluiced down around her, but her hands stuck fast. "Perfect! Now, for part two of this genius plan." She pulled on a pair of thin, metallic gloves that she'd purchased in town. They were fine chainmail, and looked more cosmetic than suited for battle. "Hold steady, Charcadet," Sarah said, and she placed one hand on top of the little creature's head. The flame on its head engulfed her hand, heating the metal until it was red hot. She quickly switched hands, and then they were both sizzling she turned back to the tower. She pressed one burning hand into the metal, carving out a perfect handhold in the weathered face of the pillar. She pulled herself upwards and carved out another hold with her other hand, and up and up until there was a perfectly spaced set of holds melted into the steel. "Just climb up after me!" Sarah said, as she continued to climb. Already ten meters off the ground, she looked down at odile to make sure she was okay to follow. "Are you going to be okay?"
