Haha! She was back! It was a weird feeling, to see this place mostly unchanged. Compared to the canopy with its binary tiles and textural holes dropping away into nothing, the Crater had the same patches of dusty brown grass, hard black rock, and oppressive heat that she remembered. There were some scorch marks from laser blasts, but those pretty much blended in with all the rest of the soot and pyroclastic flow remains. "Oh hoop! Look Randy, it's a-a! And pahoeoe!" Randy was Yggy's new Sandile, and he timidly crawled on his belly over to look at the lava formation his trainer was so excited about. "You can tell it's a-a 'cuz it's so crusty. Haha! And pahoeoe is smooth, see?" As a ground-type, not a rock-type, Randy had little to say.

Last time she'd been here, she'd been a Kindler. She'd barely been able to feel the heat in the air. Now, the shimmer coming off the grasses made her feel lightheaded. "Oh man, last time I was here this one got me so bad. Totally KO'ed Watson." The first Watson. "That sounds strong!" yelped Randy, who had never met the first Watson but had met the dark autumnal sequel. "Should we really be here?!"

Yggy pinched her t-shirt between her fingers and flapped it, trying to air it out. "Phew..." she muttered. "Man, its..." Lava. "Oh crap, it's erupting!" Yggy yelled, failing to recognize the Slugma lurking in the grass. She just assumed the ground was splitting underneath them. "We gotta get out of here!" Randy's legs were too short to follow effectively. Yggy made it halfway out of the tall grass before she realized the squat alligator was still motoring after her. "Oh crap. I mean, hoop. And crap, I forgot to say hoop earlier!" She sprinted back to find Sandile hauling itself limb over limb after her. This really wasn't its environment. I shoulda brought a fire type! But ever since she'd gotten sent to jail for having a Litten she'd been nervous about using Tigger. Hugging Sandile around the middle, Yggy quickly bolted from the scene.

Yggy set Randy down. They'd come around the far side of the Crater and were now in front of what looked like a... rock fort. Had someone been living in there? She remembered the time she, Lucky and Big Bee had all gone looking for Fennekin in their den underground and had found that weird giant root cave instead. "Hey, this is probably from back during The Storm arc!" She'd spent the whole time down on the coastline and in the canopy, but at the time a bunch of people had been trying to shore up Beta Island before the big wave hit. This was probably one of those defenses, left over after the fact. Yggy wondered who had built it. "Hey hey, anyone home?" She stuck her head inside.

The rabbit was snoozing on its back on a makeshift stone bench, warming its large feet over a pile of hot rocks. A Scorbunny would be totally awesome on her team, right? Even though she wasn't a Kindler anymore. They could play baseball and stuff together - well, maybe soccer - but soccer was okay for people who liked that stuff. "No! We should leave it alone!" Randy whispered, again, way too loud. The Scorbunny's ears twitched in its sleep and Yggy shushed the alligator. "Shhh! You're gonna wake it up! But I guess catching it would also wake it up." And it was so cute sleeping there. Maybe it was kinda wrong to break into someone's home and kidnap them in their sleep. Put it that way, there was no way she could catch it. Yggy and Randy tiptoed away, deciding to explore somewhere else.

Sandile only had four teeth, anyway. "Not really, but they're going for tons of BYTES in the trading center right now for some reason." She stuck her hands in her pockets and grinned at the Sandile. "That could even mean cash in real life! Somehow." She was still working on that plan.

One of her sneakers caught fire as the Charmanders spit embers down the hill and Yggy hopped on one foot, trying to put it out. "Run!" squeaked Randy. "You're supposed to be good against fire-types!" Yggy yelled back before kicking off her shoe and continuing, half-running, half hopping down the slope. Who would have thought Charmanders would be hiding in the old Fennekin den? She wondered what had happened to all the Fennekin.

Or she'd be saddled with Parental Guilt. "What?" Randy squeaked in dismay. He burrowed down in a patch of loose volcanic sand until only his little eyes and nostrils remained above ground. "It's okay, I know you're scared. You can stay here," Yggy said, tying her laces into a loop and hanging the single sneaker around her neck. "I gotta ride Spike anyway to get back up there, or I'll cut up my feet on volcanic glass." Ouch! She winced just at the idea. As she prepared to send out her Cyclizar, the blonde heard a sound from behind her.

"Git off our land you damn kids!" Hollered the Charmander. Hey, could Charmander even use Tackle? It should have just scratched her! This one was just being mean. "Jeez, okay already! We were already going! Can you guys at least get my shoe for me? It means a lot to me." "GIT OFF OUR LAND-" Yggy gave up. The Charmanders were too stubborn - she and Randy would have to go somewhere else and lay low for a little while until they went away, then sneak back for the sneaker.

"I never pegged Sandile for a Coastline mon," Yggy said. "W-well..." Randy said, unable to come up with a response. Yggy skipped some stones and kicked her bare feet in the cool surf for awhile. It felt good to nurse the blisters from scrambling over all the hot rocks at the Crater. She had her pain settings on Reduced, so it probably wasn't as bad as it could have been, but there was still an unpleasant buzziness. It faded after an hour or so, and she figured it was time to go back. "Do you wanna come?" she asked Randy. She'd brought the Sandile because it was strong against fire types, but he hadn't seemed very happy up on the mountain. Maybe it was just too stressful. "Um..." Randy hesitated. "It's pretty scary up there." Yggy's smile froze, then resumed. "No it's totally cool dude, don't worry about it! I'll see you later." She recalled Randy into his Pokeball and set off on her own, feeling surprisingly stung. Well, if Randy's too scared, I'll ask someone else... Time to go back and get her shoe.

Charmanders had run her off the first time, capturing her shoe in the process, but at least she knew where it was this time. Assuming the spiteful little lizards hadn't chucked it into a pit of lava or something out of spite. That would like, totally suck. Mom would kill me... Or cry, which would be even worse. She'd seen Orion's icon hanging around on the minimap, so she knew he was in the area. And since RANDY wasn't gonna help, she needed to count on her TRUE friends to come through and help her find a missing shoe. Even one a... Fennekin was chewing on?! "Hey that's mine! Get off!" Yggy cried, forgetting she was trying to be stealthy and not alert territorial Charmanders that she was back in the area. The fox froze and looked up at her, ears twitching in surprise.

"And this person tends to need a little help staying out of trouble, last time I met them they got super drunk and climbed on the back of a gigantamaxed pikachu." "A wha-" "Big fuck off pikachu." "Oh." "Either way, last time we interacted things kinda went to shit so I want to make sure they're safe because they're accident prone." "The boss is kinda cool like that, he looks mean and scary and punches good but he's secretly a big softy." "I see, is that why you're carrying mister dead weight even though he already has you?" "K" With that Hades loped off over the hill, lept into the air, and came down on the Fenniken with the people's elbow, startling it into dropping Yggy's shoe while it dealt with the Underworld Assualt.

He's up on the hill? Hades must be a Pokémon. Yggy started to get excited - it was like a pincer operation thing. Now she just had to distract Fennekin until Orion gave the signal, and she could run in and reclaim her Running Shoe. Fennekin was watching her warily, having paused in its chewing. To its eyes, the human that had just been yelling at it had stopped out of nowhere to read text on an invisible screen and make a lot of weird gestures. "Oh uh, sorry! I made a mistake I guess," Yggy said, realizing something seemed off about the situation. She held up her hands as if to pacify the dog Pokémon. "Yeah so just... keep on doing what you're doing, I guess! Haha." She rubbed the back of her neck, wincing as the fox bent its head again to resume gnawing at the leather. Aw man, they're not all torn up, are they? Then HADES made his move. "Gotcha!" Yggy exclaimed, diving forward like it was home plate and snagging the shoe from the yelping Fennekin, who currently had a Cyndaquil to deal with. "Woohoo! I got it!" She stood up, grinning victoriously and waving the sneaker over her head. "Yick, it's all drooly..." Still, a scorched and slobbery sneaker was better than none, and the tomboy hopped on one foot as she pulled it back on. After removing its partner from around her neck and equipping that one as well, she was all back to normal! "Hey Orion! Thanks so much for coming!" Yggy exclaimed, looking around. Though she couldn't see the bandana-wearing black belt, she knew he must be nearby. "Whew! You really saved my butt. I thought I was gonna have to go barefoot for the rest of the game!"

Vulcan exclaimed loudly, eyes wide with the shock. "Yeah, well we've been around the block a few times, so this sort of thing is kinda a cakwalk." The Fighter crested the hill and shot Yggy a thumbs up and a beaming smile before sliding down the ashy path to close the gap and investigate the poor fucked up fox. "No problem Ygster." He would pull out a pokeball from his pocket and dunk the fox, enveloping it in a red flash of light. Once his prize was successfully snagged, he would close the gap between him and the Tomboy. "Kinda serendipitous actually," he would continue, waggling the new aquisition. "I've spent a couple of hours hunting down one of these little fuckers, I've had to deal with this dude..." he'd give the sleeping cyndiquil in his arms a waggle, "Twice if you can imagine. Beat his ass once, and then he got back up like Rocky without hearing a bell and-" he paused. "Oh shit his name could be Rocky..." Shaking his head he would turn his gaze back to the woman who he'd last seen playing pong and getting sloppy. While he didn't have much to go on, her whole shoe predicament made him get the sneaking suspicion they were a bit of a hot mess. He was surprised to see her here of all places, but he supposed if there was a place to run into her this would be just as good as any other. "So, what's got you out here dicking around in the crater?"
