Bryan settled his helmet on and looked around the open ocean. They pair were already afloat on the high seas, in a flat-roofed, glass-fronted vessel that looked a lot like a house boat that had been converted into a Subway branch. "Well you couldn't eat much fresher than this!"
Off to starboard was a tropical island, where a number of huge, bright pink sea creatures were grazing slowly in the shallows. "Take us in, helmsman!" he shouted, and the teenager working inside the subway trudged over to the cash register. He punched a few keys on the POS system and the boat started to turn.
"You see those Gastrodon in the shallows?" he asked Laguna, pointing out a mother slug with a row of Shellos pups floating alongside her. "They're munching on some mighty fine sea grass," he said, looking down and finding he was already dressed in a swimsuit, "and if there's one thing that giant sea slugs and the Japanese agree on it's that that stuff ROCKS when prepared properly."
They reached the shore and he jumped into the shallows, paddling around and throwing heaping handfuls of the seaweed back onto the boat. "Take this stuff to the dude inside! I bet he'll know how to dry it out." He looked across the shore, at the fruit palms and rockpools covering the secluded island. "We really his the jackpot here. This place is going to be a goldmine for rare ingredients!"

#s://i~imgur~com/siDjdrO~png "Wah! Look at all the Mantine!"The words "The what now?" hang at the very tip of Remy's tongue, but he knows better than to reveal that he doesn't know something when speaking to the eight year old who looks up to her pabbi and thinks him to be the greatest authority when it comes to seas. And, to be fair, his daughter's not all that wrong: he could give facts about actual marine life to her heart's content. Fictional creatures from a game franchise, though? Yeah, no way. Remy has never been much of a gamer, but Neri likes Pokémon, so here he is, having been playing UNOVR with her for months and even having convinced Neri's mother to let come to UNOVRCon with him. "Ha! Don't they look like goofier rays? I swam with a squad rays in the Lombok Strait a few months back. Remember the videos I sent you?" Amber eyes go from looking at the squadron of Mantine to looking at the small girl by his side — tall for age, but still doubtlessly short when next to her also doubtlessly tall dad. Her hair is tied into a single messy braid, her bangs being held in place by half a dozen bobby pins. He had tried his best, okay? It's not like he does her hair often. Still, Neri looks happy, grinning up at him while holding onto the boat's gunwale. "Hah, yeah! Look, they even have remora! Remoraid!" She's right, there's strange 'fish' stuck to the sides of the Mantine like remora often are with manta rays, but as much as he could stand on this boat and look at all these Pokémon with Neri, he knows that they're here to play a game. Splashmother's Landing: Quest for the Starry Sub. At first, they had come to the arcade to get one those stamps Neri had wanted to collect, but after getting it in her little album, she had wanted to play this game. Are they really supposed to find sandwich ingredients? He can see a few things floating around, but none of those look even remotely appetizing. "Ner, what do you wanna put in your sandwich?""Hmmm... Hmmmmmmmm... Spam!""Spam?""Yeah! I love mamma's spam grilled cheese."Well, damn. Spam it is, then. A light chuckle escapes Remy's lips as he reaches to lightly ruffle the hair he had spent an hour trying to style this morning. He doesn't even consider that factor, though, being too busy looking around in search for the possible location of their coveted can of spam. There's another boat nearby, helmed by two players he doesn't recognise ( Big Bee and Laguna), but they look like they look like they know what they're doing, so maybe he should ask them? Or, hell, maybe he should follow them, since it looks like they're headed for an island... Just when he's about to cup his hands over his lips and shout, Neri beats him to it, raising her voice in excitement. "Pabbi, look! There's a shipwreck!"Oh? She's right, of course. Only a few metres beneath where the Mantine had just been swimming, an old ship sits sunken. There's a huge hole in the hull, leading to a darkened interior full of promises of potential perfectly preserved canned ingredients. "Oh, hell yeah. Good find, Ner! Maybe there's some spam down there, huh? I'll dive down and have a look, but you stay here, okay?"He doesn't doubt that his daughter can handle herself in the water, after all, he had been the one who had taught her to swim, but swimming an doing a little scuba diving are very different things from exploring a wreckage... even in VR. Is it perfectly safe? Probably. Will he let Neri dive down there with him? Not until he has first checked it out. And so, there's their plan, and into the water Remy jumps. 5f5OyUpa1d10 1d10 1d10·1d10

Abigaelle was not expecting to go and play games with her new boss, but Bryan really was just that very chill guy that made it so easy to do. It was a no-brainer that she'd join him.
The vessel was a literal Subway boat, which felt a bit egregious in its product placement. Regardless, it was for a silly minigame at the con. She just laughed, grinning ear to ear as she twirled across the deck.
The island they had landed on was perfect! "Aye aye, lots of delicious stuff if you know where to look! Although I admit, I've never had sea grass before." She'd carry the handfuls of seaweed to the teenager at the helm, or... more accurately the register? This was bizarre even for her. She swiftly decided not to think about it.
Before she could properly turn back to the island, her eyes glanced over at the other boat nearby. A man (The Captain ) and a little girl on a much more reasonable boat. How sweet. "Good luck over there!" She'd wave happily, before bounding back over to the island and leaping ashore. Her feet trudged through the wet sand.
Only to get pinched before she could really search through all the small tidepools.
"Yowch!" She screamed, kicking her foot, as a crab seemingly had pinched on tightly. After a few moments of awkward hopping, she lowered her foot back into the water and it suddenly let go and began to swim away.
"... Wait a second. Crab tastes great!" She suddenly shouted, smirking ear to ear as she dived in to grab the back of the crab, free from its pincers. A little karmic revenge always tasted good on the dinner plate. "Hey Big Bee ! Do you know how to prepare crab? Seafood was kind of a rarity for me!" L6n0IpSs1d10 1d10 1d10·1d10

#s://i~imgur~com/5eapH6A~jpg There were the pros and cons of having to travel here by raffle ticket physically. One was to get all merchandise rather than waiting for them to be delivered to his apartment through AR and another was to enjoy the events and minigames (especially the ClanWar content they promised) live in person. However, the only con was that he had to be himself when playing these VR minigames.
And this was one of them in the form of an ingredient-hunting VR game.
Since he was playing it from the show floor, he was unfortunately stuck in his real-life appearance rather than his Morpheus alias. He was bothered a little bit, but it wasn't enough to affect his concentration in the game. It's simply a game where he has to work together with other players to gather ingredients to make a sandwich. However, that was easier said than done since the game's setting took place on a seemingly deserted island and it might be difficult to gather the right ingredients here for a sandwich. So far, he got some fish, but he couldn't find some edible vegetation to fit better with them.
Yeah, he needed help. And he started off by turning to Laguna. "Uh... Is there anything that can go with seafood?" He sheepishly asked with the most awkward smile he ever had outside of his avatar persona. 7|cWtyju1d10 1d10 1d10·1d10

Which means it's absolutely criminal that you haven't had any good seafood yet. Remind me to organize a company welcome dinner for you down at the wharf this weekend!" Sea grass and crab. This sandwich was coming together nicely! Maybe the sea grass could be kind of like a nori wrapper for a California roll style sandwich. Now that was true fusion cuisine.
A worried looking guy was floating near their boat, asking about taste pairings. Big Bee waved to him from the shore. "Yo! There's plenty of good ingredients along the beach!" he called, making his way towards a beach citrus tree that had sprouted from a rocky section of shore.
Big Bee considered himself something of a gourmand, so as he picked limes for the sandwich garnish he gave Morpheus some general advice. "I'm going for citrus, which is usually a slam dunk when it comes to seafood pairings, but you can also do something sweet like papayas, or something thick and fatty like coconut flesh or milk. There's a ton of good options! What do you have so far?"

It was one thing for Andy to be deterred by the price of the plane ticket, but the other was that he didn't really have anyone to go to UNOVRCon 2023 with, and he would rather be sad and desolate about it at home rather than in the actual convention grounds. So he was still masquerading as Jinyu, having very recently received his first true Pokemon for his team: the all amazing orange forehead Magikarp. He couldn't bring the Pokemon out though while they were integrated to the AR, which sucked, because this was a sea! Surely fish would enjoy the sea, right?
In any case, he also heard that there was prize for participating, so that was why he was here. There were already a number of other players looking for ingredients for the perfect sandwich. Actually, he thought he saw a familiar face in the mix (though he shouldn't be surprised. The person who would get his Mudkip (The Captain) seemed like someone who really liked water types, so for them to be in this mini game was a no brainer). But it looked he was preoccupied, and he also soon disappeared into the water.
Being on a nondescript boat, Andy figured that he could also ask the help of other players to get a better idea of what he should be gathering (yeah, he wasn't really listening to the instructions that closely, or more of he had no idea how to put a delectable sandwich together). It was easy to direct the boat to the island, and hopping off, he could already see plenty of berry trees growing on the cliffside that had some grass instead of sand. He could tell that they were berries rather than fruits since this was a Pokemon game, and also those trees looked pretty gnarly.
Passing by the small group of players, he scaled the cliff and climbed up one of the trees as well, picking a couple of pink berries that seemed safe to eat. ❝Hey, anyone want some of the berries here? I can't tell which is which, so any help would be great!❞ he called out to the nearby players specifically (including Morpheus), as it wouldn't be difficult to get some of these berries off the branches, but was that spiky red one supposed to be safe? What about the other weirdly shaped ones? sJCjRCtz1d101d10 1d10·1d10

Logan knew he was taking a plunge in a couple ways by coming to this con in person.
Not, like, financially. His parents had that much covered. He could buy to his heart's content, as much as he could fit in his bedroom anyway, and maybe if he asked nicely he could fit a few things into the guest room or one of the other rooms they didn't use much. That wasn't the issue.
But, well, he was in a weird spot where he tried not to mix UNOVR and real life much, and also where his avatar wasn't completely unknown (he thought, he hoped--hey, Valentine had done that one raid, right? That had to be something! Even if he didn't remember much in the way of details...) but definitely wasn't one of the big name players either, and going to the con in person might just complicate all that even further.
At least his outfit was sensible enough, because here in VR, he was still wearing it. Logan was glad he hadn't gone with his first thought of cosplaying as his avatar--the pink wig was wild enough, but the more he examined her outfit, the more he realized that it was very girly and showing way more of her body than he would ever want to do in person. But he was still crossplaying, even if someone who didn't know the game lore (but who would that be at UNOVRCON?) wouldn't be able to tell. Hey, it wasn't Logan's fault that this game had like, five NPCs! Cygnus' outfit was way too complicated, he didn't think he could pull off the sheer chad-y vibes of Chadwick... the rival, maybe, but Logan didn't know how you'd get those star prints onto clothes without either doing a really sloppy job outright painting it or just like, hiring someone, which felt weird.
So, in UNOVRCON in reality and on the ocean back in VR, Logan was dressed like Dr. Bunya instead, and feeling a little awkward about it.
(He'd come to the Arcade just for the STAMP initially, but hey, while he was working on free swag for himself, why not try to get some free swag for his character while he was at it? But Logan didn't trust his cosplay outfit to be quite sturdy enough for that knock-off Temple Run business. The monocle kept falling off as it was, and the stockings kept creeping back down his legs...)
So. Sandwiches, huh? Logan wasn't an expert on those, in real life or in Pokemon. (Did they even have those in the regular games? Were those, like, an item at some point? Or did the devs just make that up entirely?)
But as he steered his boat onto the island and examined the trees nearby, upon hearing a nearby player's shout for help, Logan realized one thing he did know a fair bit about... or used to, anyway.
How long ago was it since he'd spent hours on end mixing Pokeblocks in Pokemon Emerald, trying to get just the right contest stats...
"The pink ones are sweet! So that should be good, right? Probably better than the red ones, those are spicy, I think... and dry, maybe? I never did know what 'dry' was supposed to taste like, but I'm guessing it's an acquired taste at best..."
Funny how the old knowledge came flooding back like that, the moment he needed it again. It was like he was eight years old again, hunched over his translucent Game Boy Advance, hoping that this Pokeblock would be enough to make his Pokemon a contest Champion...
Even in the more sedate of the two minigames, Logan didn't trust his outfit to be up for much activity, so he shook the nearby trees rather than trying to climb them. Some of the pink and red berries fell down, but also a twisty blue one, and while it looked familiar Logan couldn't remember what it was supposed to taste like, or its name for that matter...
"I mean, do we know what kind of thing the, uh, Splashmother likes in the first place? We don't, right? So, uh, might as well play it safe, I assume?"
Logan was used to playing it safe, at least. He was out of his comfort zone enough as it was here.

Big Bee offered to hold a whole welcome dinner a the wharf, and she immediately grew flustered.
"Oh- Come on! You don't need to make a big deal over me. I appreciate it, of course. But- You know! Oh, I can't convince you otherwise, can I?" She laughed quietly, just shaking her head. "Fine, I look forward to it! But, this weekend? We're not gonna be too busy?" It was nice knowing such a kind man was in charge of Hydance, she had a feeling she'd fit in well.
But man, was she not used to it.
Turning her head around to Morpheus who asked a question about what goes well with seafood, she hummed softly in thought as Big Bee gave his opinion.
"Personally, I love rice! But, I don't really think rice on a sandwich works. But- Hmmm... Rice bread sounds nice." She mumbled to herself, only to snap to attention as the crab in her hands attempted to claw at her fingers again.
"Oops! Sorry, be right back!" She'd go and carry it over to her boat, dropping off the crab to the poor pilot? Employee? Captain of the Subway Sub? He certainly didn't get paid enough.

Ohhh, he asked for help, and help came! A person with a lab coat had shouted at him which berries were which (or more of, which ones likely had flavor to watch out for). Even if he had played Pokemon before, he wasn't a berry enthusiast, and he wasn't exactly a competitive player either, so yeah, berries were completely out of his knowledge (except for maybe the Sitrus berry, which did its job keeping his Pokemon out of death's door).
❝Y'think the one we're making the sandwich for has more of a sweet tooth or is a spicy thing?❞ he also snickered to himself at the mention of 'dry', for he recalled that one of his Australian friends loved to joke about things being dry (it was a dry rain). He did wonder how that was like though. Maybe in reference to wine that dried one's throat? Should the game even have something like that when kids were a huge demographic ?? Suddenly, Jinyu was in crisis. Anyway, he decided to collect a good variety and run over to the person giving him instructions (Valentine ), dropping a few along the way, but that was alright, the other Pokemon could have it (if there were any of them in the minigame, that is).
❝I'm more of a sweet tooth guy myself! How 'bout you? Don't think we can just give a pure berry sandwich though. A hearty sandwich needs meat! We should go fishing!❞ 9J|3mjq81d101d10 1d10·1d10

#s://cdn~discordapp~com/attachments/1077142393742176299/1146089086541631641/8~png Jenny dove, swimming deeper and deeper towards the blinking marker on her map. Her remaining air gauge ticked down steadily as the pressure increased around her body. The shimmering blue surface above grew dim as she descended, pulling her way along the rocks towards her prize.
There, embedded in the stones, was a seacheese. Jenny didn't know what the hell that was, but it was marked with the exotic! tag, so whoever this Smashmother chick was would probably love it. Probably made by a seacow, right? Or was this still a Pokemon game after all?
She pulled out her ingredient-collecting bag, treading water as she took out her chisel and started scraping away at the underwater dairy. C'mon... It was really wedged deeply in the rock. She felt more like a paleontologist than a chef, but she kept on, doggedly.
Finally, the seacheese broke free and began to float up towards the surface. Checking her air meter, Jenny released from the rock and floated up after it, netting it neatly in her bag before rising towards the surface. Stars appeared before her eyes as her vision blinked red like sirens, warning her she was at the end of her remaining air.
Just a little further!
SPLOOOOSH! She breached like the world's smallest whale, gasping for air, and towed the seacheese with one hand until she could pull herself up onto the rocks and back onto the island. There, her half-finished sandwich waited. The other ingredients were nothing special - just pumpernickel, mystery meat, and tomato - but she had a feeling this last rare ingredient would be the key to her success.
"Done!" Jenny put her completed sandwich in her inventory and looked around. Should she make a backup sandwich, just in case? There wasn't much time left on the clock before they had to submit for the first round of inspection. She probably didn't have enough time to collect all the ingredients-- hang on.
Her eyes followed a trail of literal breadcrumbs on the rocks. She stalked over to them and followed. Yep. Here's some bread, too. And berries. Had someone (@jinyu) dropped them? They couldn't be worth much if he hadn't even bothered to pick them up but hey, Jenny would take a freebie! Couldn't hurt to have an extra appetizer in her back pocket.

There were wo games, and one was vastly more popular than the other.
So, Kasey had gone to the unpopular, quiet one.
They didn't know what exactly golden parkour entailed, but it sounded like screaming, and dying, and here they were.... on a warm little beach, picking berries from a bush. Not that it was entirely peaceful- someone (Jade Jager) breached the water with a gasp, hair clinging to them as they hauled themselves out of the water one-handed, and managed a complete sandwich.
Kasey just watched them, mute and somewhat in awe. Who was that? Probably one of the really strong trainers...
Kasey looked at their little pile of berries, fruit, and crisp leaves. Was a wrap even a sandwich, technically? Kasey had no idea. They didn't much feel like fighting a pirate for actual bread...

You've joined us at one hell of a time Laguna, so we'll do the best with what we have for now." Their sandwich was getting close to completion. They had a thick patty of sea grass for the bread, and then coconut and crab for the insides, now they just needed something 'other'. But what would fit the bill and the flavor profile?
Just then Jade Jager surfaced nearby, holding aloft a gleaming chunk of seacheese. The pale purple aura around the fromage marked it as Exotic. Big Bee whistled, and then pointed at her hand to make sure he wasn't misunderstood. "One hell of a find! That'll call in the big mama for sure!"
He turned back to Laguna. "We need something like that. A big ticket item, like a mermaid tears or a pearl from the Titanic." He thought for a moment. "We've got almost a Thai feel going on, right? So let's look for something with a little heat! I heard about thermal vents near the dropoff, so I'll check those out."
Big Bee paddled off, away from the island. The gorgeous coral and fish dropped away underneath him, and patches of water bubbled with rising thermals. He dove down, following the heat and, soon, the glow coming from the pipes of semi-molten magma. They were searing hot, and his face crinkled with conflicted effort as he tried to simultaneously stay away from the burning vent and get close enough to harvest something good.
Could he grab magma? Would a chunk of pahoeoe or a-a go better on their makeshift, rice-less sushi? Was it still magma if it was underwater? All good questions. But then he spotted the telltale purple glow of an Exotic ingredient swimming nearby. It was hard to look at directly, but he kicked towards it and snatched it, adding it straight to his inventory before it could burn him.
Big Bee floated back up to the surface and checked his ingredients. And there is was. Exotic organism. Edible. Spice level five. Condiment. He'd grabbed a handful of Mustardigrades!

Fishing was easy, but identifying which fish would be best for his sandwich was not. How was he supposed to know if the bigger fish tasted better than the tinier fish? Was this fish fatter? Did that play a part? Did their colors do something like with the berries? Because most of them were blue and gray, did that mean they were dry like what that other player said?? So many questions...at least they weren't Magikarp! Herr Forehead would've been sad if he ended up using his brethren for the sandwich, even if he wouldn't know.
He decided to pick a fish at random and chop it up with the game's knife. That didn't mean he was actually chopping it up, but pressing a floating button and turning the fish into sliced sashimi the next moment. Great! Berries, sashimi...what would go well with these? He glanced around to see what the other players were up to and saw one of them (Big Bee) swimming out into the open ocean. Ohhh, why didn't he think of that? There were plenty of other ingredients hiding underneath the water!
❝Wait for me!❞ he waved as he ran on the sand, leaving his ingredients behind on a conveniently placed white table. ❝Woohoo!❞ since he was using his in-game avatar, it somehow felt like the flavor from the trainer class was still active. Swimming was a breeze! An underwater breeze, if that were a thing! But grabbing seaweed didn't seem very inspired, so he dove deeper and kept scanning the area, deliberating moving to an opposite direction of that other player (why was he going near to the underwater volcano? Anyway...) He didn't have to move far before the seaweed gave way to something else. Seaweed, but not quite.
Sea Grapes! That didn't sound like it'd fit the sandwich at all, but he took it gladly, harvesting quite a number so that he could snack on them when he swam back to the surface. Ah, he wished that he could hold his breath for this long in real life, but VR was not half bad.
Soon, he resurfaced and swam to shore with his free hand, proudly showing off a huge batch of a very beady and green plant. ORSWYb9b1d101d10 1d10·1d10

There are two games currently being mobbed by players each when Astrum finally gets to the heart of the arcade. The more popular of the two seems to be some sort of dungeon-esque escape game, and while the ravenette ordinarily would be all gung-ho for such a heart-racing, blood-pumping game, the other one just catches his eye right away. It's the "starry sub" part of the name that first draws his attention, his space-loving self easily distracted by the mere mention of stars, but the part that really piques his interest is the whole fishing aspect.
Maybe it's not quite the sort of interest and hobby someone might think he enjoys, but Astrum positively adores fishing. That's how the young man finds himself sitting at the edge of his boat, idly fishing away and waiting for a bite. Seeing as how the goal of the entire game is to build a delicious sandwich, it only makes sense to look for the protein first. At least, in Astrum's mind, anyway.
"Oh! A bite!" The man pulls on his fishing rod, twisting and turning along in the direction of the fish as it tries to fight the line. Eventually, though, the mighty tug-of-war between man and fish comes to an end as Astrum victoriously reels in his catch: a radiantly-glimmering RAINBOW TROUT. Somehow! "...? What's a freshwater fish doing in the open sea? ...Eh, game logic, I guess. Still... I'd have preferred some RED SNAPPER or maybe even just a BARRED KNIFEJAW... They'd taste great in a sandwich."
The man is just about to toss his line back in the water in hopes of finding something else when another player (@jinyu) hops into the ocean with a loud SPLASH! Oho, so some of the others are hopping on in? Well... Astrum doesn't feel too comfortable about hopping into an ocean, considering he...can't swim... Even though this is VR, the ravenette doesn't want to risk it. After all, his settings are set to realistic... Oh, but maybe the man can wade into the shallows and grab things that way?
