"Ha! Isn't this great?"The sentiment probably isn't a shared one, but The Captain smiles with all of the confidence and excitement of someone who sees bad situations as 'things we can laugh about a week from now'. Plus, this isn't a bad situation at all! Sure, the small boat he had found flipped upside down at the Drowned Harbour is barely a boat all; it's rusty, the paint is chipped, and its motor doesn't even work anymore, but at least it's not leaking or anything! And yes, he knows the last time he had convinced Saint to join him on a boat like this they had faced some fucked up virtual sea monster, but hadn't that been fucking amazing?! It had been amazing from The Captain's perspective, at least.Unsurprisingly, the white tail of a dog wags as he stands with a foot on the boat's bow, looking at the school of Wishiwashi that push the vessel forward just below the surface of the water. Thanks a ton, Whydah! "No monsters in sight, right?" He laughs, looking back towards Saint. But, of course, the half-erased and chipped name of their improvised vessel should have been warning enough: Ship Happens.

âI think Iâm going to be sick.â
Because life had a way of playing cruel jokes, Saint found himself once again at the mercy of three things: The vast oceanic unknown, a rickety boat with a mid-life crisis naming scheme, and The Captain. Of the three, the last is the most formidable opponent, by virtue of it being impossible to say no to him and his stupidly charismatic little dog tail.
When The Captain looked back to him, Saint was not by the edge, hurling his guts out as God intended. No, he was smartâhe was acting as counterweight. No, he was not clinging like a terrified koala to the furthest bench, holding the nonworking motor as if itâs his only lifeline. He was counterweight.
âCap⌠captain⌠are you sure we canât just. Observe the ocean on land? At a safe distance?â he balked, staring at the veritable landscape of rusting shipwrecks. Heâs not sure if the bleached thing hanging off that ruined mast was a skeleton, but he refused to perceive it regardless.

The Captain is, to no exaggeration, in his element. This is Remy we're talking about here! A man who, in his thirty three years of life, has spent much more time at sea than on land â disproportionately so, in fact. The ocean is his whole life, but don't get him wrong, that doesn't mean he underestimates it at all. Not even when it's a virtual ocean!
He respects the waves, as his TikTok and Instagram audience surely knows from the many clips of him talking about such things in the most chill way possible. Of course, most of those clips probably get the majority of their views and likes because of his lack of a shirt, but that's not the point here, okay!?
"Saint, buddy, you shouldn't fear the ocean." He begins, giving the unwillingly aspiring sailor a smile. "Respect it, yeah, but don't fear it. You're a Swimmer, right? You belong here!"
He extends his arms as if to indicate the whole of their briny surroundings, and at that moment, his pointy dog ears perk right up, because as if in a horrific cue, there's the loud splashing sound of something coming out of the water right behind him.

âI donât fear the ocean!â Saint insisted despite white-knuckling the floorboards. âIâm afraid of whatâs inside it! Donât you remember the last time weââ
And in a cruel, fantastic display of comedic timing, the ocean stirred, like a hawk detecting some wet pathetic purse poodle on a sidewalk.
The noise that escaped Saint then was, coincidentally, exactly that of a squeaky toy.
âTAIYAKI!â He said, calling out his Gyarados rather than his last meal. Taiyaki burst out from his ball, his array of golden scales glistening in the bright light bouncing off the waves.
The gyarados looked up from where he emerged by the side of his trainerâs dingy little boat, being greeted by the sight of a creature about four times his weight, with 50% of that weight dedicated to its gaping mawâ and thought, Ah, shit.
âIce fang!â

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what we call dĂŠjĂ vu:
Turning a second after the initial splash, The Captain smiles when faced with a huge creature to which he can put no name. His expression is ecstatic, marked by both excitement and awe. He never falters, the skills and training of a lifelong sailor surely being part of the reason why he somehow manages to keep perfect balance despite the violent rocking of the boat (aside from physical prowess, of course... and maybe some added stability added by his surprisingly-not-currently-wagging dog tail). With a firm stance and arms crossed over his chest, he utters words that have been spoken in amazement once before in this game.
"Boooy, that's a big one." Yes, he wolf whistles this time too. I told you, dĂŠjĂ vu.
Yo, Saint! Buddy! What the hell is that thing?! Looks like a big, fucked up crab!"
At least quite a lot has happened since The Captain and Saint encountered that one seaweed beast, and although still no expert, he does have a better grasp of the game. When the Gyarados attacks, the school of Wishiwashi is called to do so as well.
"WHYDAH." Out of the water the enormous amalgamation of fish jumps as if it were a whale, the powerful jet of a WATER GUN hitting the apparently ever-screaming maw of their unnamed crab adversary.

Saint didnât know what was keeping The Captain all bright-eyed and rose-cheeked in the face of deathâs abyssal maw but good God, can he get some?!
âI donât know! I donât know!â Actually, he would know. Saint had far more PokĂŠmon experience than The Captain, not to mention his all-time favorite versions were the Sun and Moon games and their respective sequels, but it was hard to remember anything when youâre fending off a panic attackâand also his eyes were closed.
Taiyaki was going through it. After slamming the impossibly large opponent with his jawsâand failing to eat him, naturallyâheâd been lucky enough to take only a swipe on his side before retreating to a safer distance. Kyogre knew how long his luck would last.
<Holyâ> the giant sushi blinked as an even gianter sushi broke through the waves, hosing down the massive crab. <Okay, okayâcould really use some strategy right now, humans!> Huge waves ripped through the water, sloshing the flimsy boat around like a tekdek.
âJUST KEEP BITING IT.â

Have you ever been enjoying the beauty of diving, when suddenly your diving partner hastily signals to surface, alerting you to the vicious barracuda rapidly approaching right behind you? Have you ever had sea lions come to sunbath on your boat at a pier, growing aggressive when you try to make them go back to the water? Have you ever swam next to a shark, running your hand over their sandpaper-like skin? Have you ever been alone on your boat in the open seas, completely surrounded by a pod of hunting orcas? Our Captain sure has, and countless experiences like these ones are the reasons why he manages to keep calm and instead faces the situation with a cautious excitement. Maybe there's something wrong with him, but moments like those are part of the reason why Remy adores life at sea, and how could he not be thrilled when those same wonders appear before him in this virtual reality? It's like an ocean he's yet to explore, creatures he's yet to face, anecdotes yet to be experienced... But, enough of all that! Back to the here and now. "Holy shit, this guy's amazing." The Captain exclaims with a laugh, marveling at the way dark claws attempt to grab hold of the school of Wishiwashi. Not good news for Whydah, sure but still incredible to see. Saint, on the other hand, isn't looking like he's having as much of a good time, and as much as our daring Captain loves the wonders of the sea, his duty as a captain always comes first: to look out for his crew, be them human or strange little critters. Well, not so little when it comes to Saint's giant sea snake, but anyway! "Looks like we'll need some reinforcements to get this over with quicker, huh? Roger, you're in!"A PokĂŠball is clicked, and his Totodile salutes when appearing on the ever-rocking boat. <'Toto!'>"Ha! That's what I like to hear. Now, go bite that thing."<'TOTO!'>

âAmazing? Captain, itâs eating your PokĂŠmon!â Saint sputters, flabbergasted at The Captain taking a moment to take in thisâabomination. This is the second time heâs witnessed the man laugh in the face of an undersea nightmare. It makes him wonder just what he has seenâ not in the game, but in real life, because he knows he hasnât been playing UNOVR long enough to become like this.
The battle rages on.
Captainâs Totodileâapparently called Rogerâjoins the fray, saluting and jabbering in a cute duck-like way that made Saint want to give him a treat, though the water type was intent on self-service.
Both Saint and Taiyakiâs eyes bulge as the tiny, tiny Totodile sinks his jaws at the perfect spot, dealing a hefty chunk of damage.
âWhat are you feeding him?â Saint saysâ now itâs his turn to marvel. Itâs perfect, because it forces him to keep his eyes open, and itâs here that he can finally get a good look at what theyâre dealing with.
<Thatâs the spirit!> Taiyaki roars. <Come on, fellas! Letâs chomp âem down! JAWS! OUT!> He dove back in, weaving past the tendrils to try and nab another bite.

"Well, yeah... Most animals tend to eat other animals, bud." The Captain tells Saint as if this were one of the simple truths of the world and perfectly applicable to PokĂŠmon too. He had no reason not to believe so, after all. As for his concern over Whydah's wellbeing or the lack thereof... "And don't you worry about Whydah! He's only one of those little fishies. Once the school breaks up, he'll be just fine. Missing his buddies, maybe, but he can always find more. That's the wonder of schooling fish."Well, there it is. And no, The Captain doesn't know that 'Schooling' is Wishiwashi's ability, nor does he know what PokĂŠmon abilities are, but he does know about marine biology, and he also does deeply trust that his PokĂŠmon will be just fine. Is that too much trust, though? Maybe. Just like he probably has too much trust in that this swaying boat won't capsize before the battle is done. "Roger feeds on the souls of his enemies, obviously." He adds then with a wink and a smirk that clearly indicate that he's joking. He is joking, right? He has to be... Although, then again, with PokĂŠmon such a thing might just be possible... <'TOTO!'> Roger seems to agree, now standing on one of the weird beast's claws and clinging to it. Is he agreeing with The Captain or with Saint's Gyarados? Could be either, but there's no explanation; he just gives their enemy another chomp.

âBut thatâs his family,â Saint says, anguished despite knowing The Captain was definitely in the right. Pokemon werenât like real life animals, they had consciousness frighteningly similar to those of people, and while Wishiwashi were innately capable of dismantling themselves and reforming, thereâs no confirmation that Whydah actually likes exploding into a billion tiny fish.
There is, however, confirmation that Roger likes to eat the souls of the innocent. Saint squints as Captain gives him a playful wink and smile, unable to determine if the man is a marine expert or the reason why CPS for virtual fish will eventually be established.
âWeâll table your fish-owning ethics for now,â Saint grumbles. âI think I know what weâre dealing with.â Itâs a quick enough recall, once he gets a good look at the massive thing and sees itâs nothing like the hundreds of PokĂŠmon in his nerdy data banks. âThatâs a Guzzlord!â
The Guzzlord in question roars with fury, being bitten this way and that. Its tendrils smack against Taiyaki and Whydah, trying simultaneously to dislodge Roger, whose chompers have latched onto its claw like a barnacle.
âItâs an Ultra Beast. Theyâre technically not PokĂŠmon, more likeâlike aliens in this reality! Theyâshit!â
The Guzzlord slams its massive body into the surf, causing a wave the size of Texas to come hurtling towards them.
Saint grabbed hold of the gunwale, for all the good that would do his frail little body. âCaptain! Weâre going to get thrown overboard!â

For a second there, The Captain gives Saint the perplexed look of a dog who's wondering where his favourite toy went â head tilt, dog ear wiggle, and everything. Poor fish-owning ethics? Him? No way, he's not one of those people who keeps Beta fish in cups or fish bowls! Yeah, sure, he doesn't actually own any fish in actuality, but that's because he lives on a damn boat and spends most of his time around fishes. Hell, he had even worked at an aquarium once, he could go on and on about fish ecology and proper aquarium husbandry... Anyway! BOAT!"Woah, there! No worry, buddy, we totally got this." The Captain tells Saint, moving closer and giving him a reassuring clap on the back. Admittedly, part of it is to make sure his short first mate doesn't fall overboard, and even though he too holds onto the gunwale, an arm remains clasped around Saint's shoulders, keeping him in place with surprising strength. "WHYDAH! BEHIND US. Make sure the boat stays afloat!"A million fish move in unison, the figure of the enormous Wishiwashi losing its shape by the second, like a sand sculpture behind destroyed by claws of the enormous beast that keeps attempting to grasp it with no success at all. The fish fall back into the water and regroup there, forming a mass that soon makes the stern of the boat rise. "Alright, now brace yourself!" The Captain instructs as if he has done this a million times. Well, he hasn't fought a lot of alien monsters (he'll have to ask Saint more about this Guzzlord thing once the immediate danger has passed), but he sure has withstood the impact of countless waves much worse than this one, and so, his immediate concern is mostly that Saint doesn't get swept away by the sheer for it. His eyes close and he feels it: the utter force of tons of gelid saltwater. The boat rocks under the sheer pressure, but The Captain trusts that Whydah will keep it afloat. Just as he trusts that beyond the danger of the wave, Roger still holds on...

Panic is in Saintâs eyes as The Captain gives him the most literal puppy-dog eyes heâs ever seen. âCAPTAIN, THIS ISNâT THE TIME TO BE CUTE!â He grips the gunwale harder for fear of doing something stupid, like throw his hands up or shaking The Captain while their watery grave rapidly approaches.
Before he knows it however, the man gives him a clap on the backâcausing Saint to stumble, due the lack of meat on his bones. The arm wraps around his shoulders like the safety bar of a roller coaster, and while that is reassuring, it doesnât change the fact theyâre still on the damn coaster.
The Captain does not have to tell him twice: Saint braces himself until his knuckles turn white, vertigo hitting as the boat practically goes airborne and comes dangerously close to a flipâsalvaged solely by Whydahâs strength. Gallons of water spray onto the deck, Saint scrambling as the soles of his shoes slip.
By the time the wave subsides, Saint is waterlogged, gripping The Captainâs arm like a cat saved from a canal. His eyes are open and a little bloodshot due to the sea salt, and when he coughs, he hacks up seaweed.
The Guzzlord slumps in the water, still towering over them with its bulk, but its biting appendages have fallen and are now floating lifelessly in the bay.
âPoke⌠Ball... Throw a PokĂŠ BallâŚâ he croaks, because pants-shitting encounters aside, this would be an excellent specimen to study. His shaking fingers pull out the Golden PokĂŠ Ball from his inventory, tossing it overboard.

He lives for this. The ocean. The power of the waves. The mysterious unknown that lurks in the depths. Braving that which most people would never dare brave. There is no fear in The Captain's expression, but for a moment there, his expression is a mask of concern â that which is born out of the respect he has for his environment. This may be a virtual ocean, but it's an ocean all the same, and even in the depths of this simulation, these dangers are not to be taken lightly. But, gods, isn't life just so fucking great? It's the Swimmer subclass that makes every single drop of water slide off him as if the entirety of his being were impermeable, but even if he had ended up soaking wet by the end of this little ordeal, he would be smiling just as brightly as he does now. "Man..." It's the whisper of a thought that never comes to be fully voiced, for the expression is followed by a light laugh and a not-so-light couple of pats on Saint's back. "You did great, bud. That was a good one." He finally lets go to reach for a PokĂŠball just as Saint had mentioned, chucking it at the unconscious and rapidly-sinking creature. Good thing it's fucking enormous. What had Saint said it was called? "...You said it's an alien or something, ye?" Now his attention is on their little vessel: inspecting the damage to figure if it can actually take them back to the shore. That's a hell of a lot of water, huh? Weren't it for Whydah being under the boat, they'd probably be sinking by now, but of course The Captain won't worry Saint with such a trivial little problem. "Looked like a weird big crab more than anything... Guess it'd make sense that they'd make alien PokĂŠmon that look like sea creatures, though. That's how a lot of cultures used to explain a lot of the weirder ones... or mermaids. Everything got turned into a damn mermaid myth." He laughs at that one, sounding as carefree as ever.

The smacks on his back did the ticket for dislodging whatever else had gotten stuck in Saintâs throat after swallowing a lungful of saltwater, the first mate doubled over and hacking up sea trash on the floor of the boat.
Heâs righting himself just as The Captain threw his PokĂŠball, two copies of the Guzzlord captured and the original now gone, leaving only a large barren spot off the shore.
âYeah, itâs an alien,â Saint sighed, rubbing color backed into his face as he followed The Captain around, oblivious to the precarious state of their vehicle. Waving his hand in the air, he pulled up his PC box, inspecting the newly-caught Guzzlord curiously.
He chuckled at The Captainâs rumination. âIt does look like a crab, huh. I was thinking more Lovecraftian. Azathoth, or The Dunwich Horror.â Though he couldnât deny that creatures of the deep were a universal nightmare across cultures. âWhere Iâm from, we have a mythological creature called Tambanokano thatâs basically a giant crab that causes floods when he leaves his home in the deep sea. Maybe thatâs what we wouldâve called this thing, if it existed.â
He wasnât exactly rearing to try training an Ultra Beast yet, so he put away his UI and turned to The Captain. âCaptain, letâs head back to shrineâI mean, uh, shore. And then shrine.â He slumped. âI think thatâs enough adventure for today.â
