The setting sun always made Ruby sleepy.
It was such a beautiful sight. The beautiful colors and hues shifting across the sky, reflecting off the ocean waves as she sat atop the pebble beach at the far edge of town.
Most people didn't come out this far. The beach wasn't exactly a tourist destination. There were no sands to go sunbathe or build castle, the sharp rocks under the water made swimming unsafe. And yet, it was absolutely beautiful. It was her favorite place to go when she needed to just think.
Ruby sat on the shore atop some rocks, just staring into the distance. A familiar pillow beneath her, providing at least some comfort. Her backpack sat nearby, filled with a few snacks, drinks, and even a blanket in case she got cold. She just sighed, leaning forwards and cradling her arms around her legs.
To think that somewhere out there across the sea, people were still in Ostellia. Fighting those horrific beasts, terrible and massive. Nope, she had enough of that.
She wasn't here to be a fighter. There was certainly some interesting things to explore, and no doubt she would go over eventually. But as it stood, the anxiety of all the danger filled her with a bit of dread. It was... an interesting feeling. She knew none of this was real, it was all a game. The threat, the challenges, none of it was real. And yet they all felt almost more real than anything else did.
She really needed to write another experiment log for the people back at VMT,
With a long sigh, Ruby's eyes just fluttered shut for a moment, letting everything else fade away. Just listening to the waves crash, the warmth of the setting sun, the chill of the wind. All these things felt so real...
They might as well be real.
She heard some noise from behind her, likely someone else walking by. But at this point, Ruby had gotten quite good at ignoring other people's presence. When players came by all hours of the day to Mom's house to get their shoes, learning to ignore them was a must. The Dreamer's ability to fall asleep on command was so welcome.

The world was quiet.
The sun hung low and somber in the sky, barely starting to crease the horizon. Another update had come- a new world, new experiences, new new new.
For Mimiqueue, the old was new. She walked the streets of Briarbane, not for a goal or mission- she did not hurry to checkpoint or quest. Mom’s house held little interest.
What held interest was everything else- the creatures rustling among the dust and cobble, the birds cawing and crowing. She paused at shops, spending hours looking over every item for sale, taking it into her hands, feeling the weight and texture of it.
Mimiqueue followed the moss along a building’s side, and dipped into a side alley to retrieve a pigeon feather. To her… these were more valuable than some pre-programmed quest. She was constantly told what to do in real life- why would she simply do the same here?
So, as night was creeping closer, Mimi found herself walking down Cerulean Boulevard, from the cobbled stone to smooth pebbles, to the smooth sand.
She looked over the ocean, listening to the great rush of it, letting her feet carry her forward- until she noticed the person there. And then, Mimiqueue froze, breath still in her chest, heart fluttering.
But… But the person sitting there didn’t move. And… the few people Mimi had seen, they were all- distinctive. People running by, flames licking at their clothes, water casting from their fingertips- or plants, curling around wrists.
This person… she seemed plain- like the other NPCs. The anxiety abated. Slowly, Mimiqueue moved to their side, carefully sitting. “Um… Is it alright if I join you?” She asked, voice prim and airy.

When the stranger spoke, her eyes fluttered open to look over at them. Ruby tilted her head slowly, taking them all in. They looked almost too perfect. Like, a living, sentient doll. And she had to admit, that was kind of cool.
She couldn't help but wonder what kind of person would make such a unique look for this game. It wasn't one she had seen before. Usually animal features were more common for little details like that. And to think, all Ruby had done was made her hair pink and become a teen all over again.
"Of course, Sis." Ruby spoke so casually, like calling them sister was the most normal thing. Of course, after over a year of being stuck in this simulation, it kind of was. She just referred to everyone as a sibling, people tended to not ask too many questions when she did so. She didn't hesitate, slowly grabbing the blanket from her backpack and politely spreading it across the pebbles beside her so it was at least a little more comfortable.
And with that, Ruby wrapped her arms back around herself once again. Her gaze slowly shifting out to the horizon and the setting sun. "It's a lovely night. I don't mind some company." She just smiled softly softly to herself, leaning her cheek on her knee.
"I'm Ruby." Ruby casually introduced herself, letting out a long, quiet sigh. The setting sun turning the sky a beautiful orange, and she couldn't help but just relax at the sight. "I still live with Mom, heh. But it's always so busy at home, it's nice to get out now and then. "

At the first brush of Ruby’s voice, Mimiqueue let out a small breath of relief. Of course, Sis. Like this was the most natural thing in the world- Which… it was. Mimiqueue was simply this NPC’s sister, both daughters of Mom. It was a simple premise, but one easy to slip into.
Cautiously, Mimi sat down next to the NPC, legs swept underneath her. She looked over the water, listening to the rustle of waves, the rush of the wind. It was peaceful, in a way she hadn’t experienced before. Micheal had gone to the beachsides before, but never for the beach. Always for a something. Some event, or gathering, or conference.
Never just to sit, and watch the sunset, and bask in what nature truly was. “It is a lovely night,” She repeated, voice soft. Slowly, her gaze flicked to Ruby- what a pretty name- just looking at her a moment. She was cute, and looked similar enough to Mom in the way of anime designs.
But, she’d began introductions, and needed one in return. Mimiqueue paused a moment, rehearing to herself, before finally speaking. “I’m Mimi…” Another bit of relief. An introduction successfully made… “It… is nice to get out, isn’t it?”
She could understand a busy home- Jasper and the other caretakers, constant visitors and guests- His time had been stressful, as of late, but… the quiet and seclusion was nice. Not something he’d knew he had truly been missing.

"It's really nice, yeah." Ruby just smiled in response, staring out under the setting sun. It was ultimately peaceful. Growing up in near London, she had never really made her way to the coast. But this? It was close enough, if not better.
The way the fading sunlight just reflected off the water, descending down over the horizon, it was stunning. But she could spend every evening down here by herself, enjoying the moment. She didn't have company with her every day, it was genuinely nice.
She'd turn her head, carefully examining Mimi a little bit more up close, before suddenly moving. She'd dig into her backpack, pulling out a juice box. It had a cute picture of an Applin on the front, little plastic straw stuck to the back and everything.
"Juice?" She'd offer politely, handing it over if they other girl wanted it. "I tend to bring lots of snacks, drinks, and candies with me. I tend to walk around, find pretty places to just spend some time relaxing, maybe take a nap."
Talking about a nap, she chuckled quietly to herself at all that implied, but it was a joke only really funny for herself. "Maybe, next time I find a cute place, I can send you the location? If you wanted, of course. If you appreciate the beach here, there's so many other peaceful places out there, admist the chaos."

Mimiqueue blinked at Ruby, seeming startled that she was even being asked something. "Um- I- Yes, please." She said, quietly, taking the offered juice box, studying it for a moment. There was a little creature, an apple with a worm coming out of it.
Something children were depicted with having, in elementary school. An experience he never got to have.
Mimi tightened her grip on it, a bit, carefully pulling free the straw and sticking it in. It didn't taste much like apples- it was just sweet, and warm.
And Ruby was... still offering more. Not just a place to relax, but... Maybe a friend. Maybe a real friend. Mimiqueue looked down at the juicebox in her hands, not yet brave enough to keep meeting her eyes. "Um... um, yeah. That would be nice." Tentatively, she did manage to look at Ruby, offering a timid, fleeting smile.

Ruby didn't need to have a PH.D. in psychology to tell that Mimiqueue was timid and shy. The way they spoke quietly, the hesitation in their words, but that smile meant so much more because of that. She instinctively grinned widely back, it was a nice feeling to make a new friend.
She nodded, slowly reaching into her backpack to pull out a long sheet of paper. Ruby had long ago translated the map in the UI that she never used, onto paper for her own uses. It just felt better, more tangible. Sure, she checked the UI map now and then when something changed, like the entire Giant Shrine being taken, but she'd just update her paper map.
It was covered in notes with tiny, delicate handwriting. Little words scribbled all across the paper. "Danger" wrote all across the border of Asper and Mistra, as well as many other seemingly random locations. Little dots drawn in specific spots to denote locations. Descriptions like "My Flower Field." within the Misty Timberlands, and "Relaxing Pond." in the Birchwild Grove were pretty easily noticeable and many other descriptions like them covered the map.
Ruby just slowly lays the map down, letting Mimiqueue examine it as much as she liked. "I travel like, every day." She explained with a nod. "I already have a few favorite spots. The flower field there, I go there at least once a week. It's got the most beautiful flowers. I think you'd like it."
"Maybe I can uh, walk with you there sometime?" Ruby spoke again with another soft smile. "It can be a little dangerous getting there, but it really is worth it. So, safety in numbers, yeah?"
