Surely the order of these tutorials didn't matter, right? Nero had the running shoes now, and while the game seemed to be hinting that the next most appropriate tutorial for him to be doing was a parcel delivery or something boring like that, it was a different pop up that had caught his eye. He felt like he'd lost a year of his life just listening to the NPC mother ramble on with fictional stories - and he was refusing to acknowledge the little murmur in his heart that had been desperate to be heard at the fact his 'mother' had been so soft and kind with him... So anyway, he wanted something a little more active this time. He wanted to start actually playing the game.
It was technically the fourth tutorial that had caught his eye next then, the one about how to actually catch Pokemon. He hadn't played tonnes of Pokemon in the past, and none of the more recent games, but he remembered the basics from his younger years when he'd borrowed handheld consoles from friends and hid them under his bed so his parents wouldn't take them from him. It was the classic 'weaken it, status it, catch it' in every game, right? And sure there'd probably be some on screen prompts to help him figure out how to do it in this game, but that couldn't take half as long as the backstory had, could it?
Besides, he wouldn't mind being held up a bit by actual gameplay... probably.
Still following the tutorial prompt on screen (because the last thing he wanted was to die in his first encounter by walking into the wrong grass and not knowing what to do), he found the patch of tall grass with the '[004] What's the Catch?' tag hanging over it, and strode towards the first few blades.
He was immediately stopped by a... "Porygon?" that immediately threw up a guide in front of his face. It was the mascot of the game or something, he'd seen it before somewhere or other, but at least once he closed this guide he'd be able to just get straight into catchin-
"Oh there you are dear, I'm so glad I caught up with you!" Oh no, it was the mother NPC. She was back again, waving and walking towards him having seemingly spawned in as Nero had closed out of the guide.
He was entirely too distracted by her sudden reappearance to notice an actual player character stood nearby, calling out carelessly in that whole direction with, "Oh Dio, what are you doing here?!"

Torino's UI pings, letter her know that she has been automatically added to a nearby player tutorial group. Oh. On this server I haven't done the tutorials. She spots her tutorial-mate, a young man in a dark black duster. He calls to her and she replies. "Me? I was on my way to Briarbane. What are you doing here?"
C0D13 appears next to her. "It looks like you are having trouble finding your destination! I have marked the road to Briarbane for you!" A huge dot appeared on her map, and fluorescent pink signs appeared in the overworld, guiding her Eastward and directly into a huge patch of grass with the words '[004] What's the Catch?' floating over it. The NPCs weren't always subtle in this game.
She looks Nero up and down. He appears to be dressed in end-game gear for a different RPG. "Are you new?" she asks with a welcoming smile. She nods over at the grass. "We will catch it together, okay? It is easy." She walks confidently towards the grass and there is an explosion of sound as a wild Pokemon jumps out and the battle begins.

As the mother NPC approached Nero and started monologuing about what a Pokeball was, Nero heard a second voice that seemed to have responded to his question. Looking away as 'Mom' pulled out the golden Pokeball that he'd need soon enough, he frowned as he finally acknowledged another player nearby. Why was there always someone else around for these? He just wanted to do them in peace, and in a little secrecy too perhaps, so that he could launch himself into the main game already knowing everything and looking like an expert. The more people who saw him 'learning the basics', the harder that charade was going to be to pull off!
'Mom' had moved on to talking about battles and attacks and weakening things before you caught them - all things Nero remembered from the old games, although some of it seemed a little different now. No mention of paralysis or sleep; had they taken those features out maybe? He had turned away from the other player without responding, partially out of embarrassment for accidentally shouting at a stranger, and partially in the hopes that they'd move on and forget about him if he chose to just ignore them.
Unsurprisingly, that didn't work, and soon the other player was right up beside him. Reluctantly glancing back towards her, he shifted a little uncomfortably as she looked him over, before suddenly tensing up at her question. "Why does everybody keep asking me that?!"
Because you're in the tutorial zone, Nero. Calm down.
Realising his mistake the moment that he'd spoken it, he was quick to continue before she could answer the obvious question. "I don't need help, I know what I'm doing!" He did not. "I can do it on my own!" He could not. And while he'd been complaining and arguing, he'd missed a solid chunk of what 'Mom' had been saying about what to do next. The NPC was halfway through her demonstration by now, and Nero turned around just in time to see her throwing a Pokeball at a Pokemon. Great, he'd missed that actually useful bit, and judging by the change in music and the sudden appearance of a purple cat, it was his turn to try now already. Now he'd have to follow this stranger's lead.
Or, or - he could just guess and hope for the best.
With that attitude now fueling him, he pulled out the starter Pokemon ball that he'd received from the lab and let Cyndaquil out onto the grass in front of him. Trying his hardest to disguise the way that he kept glancing at the other player for confirmation that he was doing this right, he attempted to sound confident as he ordered, "Ember, Cyndaquil?" The slight question at the end of the request didn't bother the fire type, who attempted to let off a little cough of flame in the Purrloin's direction, while Nero snuck another glance at his new human acquaintance for a sign that he'd barreled ahead in the right direction at least.

The patch of tall grass is a swarm of disorganized action and overly-helpful advice. C0D13 buzzes around the Purrloin, highlighting weak points with flashing markers and filling the air with clickable popups for type charts and movesets. Mom gives out helpful tips in her bubbly, supportive voice. "Keep your elbow up! Aim for center mass!" she says, demonstrating with her Golden Pokeball.
Torino critiques Nero's battle technique, and her style definitely tilts more into the critical than the gently supportive. On the EU servers it is sink of swim, even for new players, and time spent coddling a newcomer is time that could be better spent finding warm shelter. "You need confidence my friend! That Ember would not keep you warm for a minute a blizzard! I need to see it burn like your passion!"
She makes a motion with her hands like she's growing the flame into a towering conflagration. "You must paint the battlefield with your will to succeed!"
"Just have fun, honey," says the communal Mom. "Battling is all about making new friends!"
"This is true. Those you fight alongside will remain fast friends always!"
Torino's words trigger something in the auto-party system and a popup appears in her UI.
Send a friend request to Nero? [YES] [NO] She taps yes, and C0D13 zips over to her.
"You've just sent your first friend request! Would you like a tour of the communication and party systems?"
"No thank you. We are battling a cat right now."
"Would you like to set a reminder for 5 minutes from now?"
"...No."
Torino watches C0D13 disappear, and turns her attention back to the battle. "Show me more fire!"

Having only just recently managed to clear the last set of annoying pop-ups and hints from his display, Nero was understandably frustrated to see so many cloud his surroundings once again. He knew half of this stuff from back when he was ten years old, playing on ordinary consoles. And sure, some things had changed but types and effectiveness and accuracy and all that were the same, right? Couldn't he just tick a box that said he wasn't completely new to skip all of this? Apparently not, and now he could barely see the cat Pokemon that he was supposed to be attacking.
It wasn't just visual prompts that he was getting this time either. Mom was cheering some nonsense at him, but the other player character seemed to be doing something similar too. It was a cacophony of noise and notifications, and Nero almost wanted to slam his hands over his ears and close his eyes and wait for it to all go away. He practically had done that right after the lab when he'd marched to a quiet spot and tried to take a moment away from everything, but he couldn't do the same now without running away from this encounter. And his stubbornness wouldn't allow for that.
Instead then, as one more sudden pop-up beside him announced something about a friend request, something snapped, and he eventually yelled out a brash "Shut UP!" He turned to COD13 and Mom, pointing to each in turn with a, "You, you," and then pointing to the other player character, 'Torino' by their tag, "not you. You want to see fire, I'll show you fire." The finger swung around to face the Purrloin once more, followed by a far more confident, "Ember, Cyndaquil!"

The shift in confidence in Nero's voice didn't seem to have had any real effect on Cyndaquil - nor did the increase in anger and frustration in the tone that gave the order. The little fire type was just as happy to shoot off an ember now as he had been before, his relaxed nature making him a good match for the far from calm trainer he'd been paired with. While Nero's emotions flexed up and down every five minutes, it took quite a lot of effort to rile Cyndaquil up at all. That allowed him to keep consistent even as his trainer varied, and to stop battles from getting out of hand on whatever emotional whim had ticked Nero off.
The ember struck its mark, the flame licking against the Purrloin's fur before the cat moved in close to scratch at the fire mouse's soft nose. His paws reached up to cover the claw marks automatically with a little squeak of upset at the pain, but he wouldn't let that stop him. Battles came with injuries after all - this just made him into even more of a warrior.
Now wholly focused on the battle at hand, the tips and guidance from COD13 and Mom seemed to fade out entirely - or else Nero shouting at them had actually done some good. Either way, he was able to pay attention at last to the actual battle, and the simple mechanics made for a simple learning curve. With minimal moves at his disposal for now, it made sense to stick to the one that was working and continue to chip down this Pokemon's health. He could look up what else Cyndaquil could do later, but for now, "Ember!" seemed to be working pretty well.
Finishing the catching segment of the tutorial with just Nero and then continuing the player interaction when it's done! ^-^

Maybe it was the added concentration, maybe it was Cyndaquil feeling fueled on by his nose scratch, or maybe the Purrloin simply wasn't that strong. Whatever the case, it went down to the third hit, letting out a yowl as it slumped down and stopped launching return attacks at the nearby fire type. Cyndaquil let out a proud squeak as he hopped up and down before turning back to Nero expectantly.
The trainer had been surprised by the sudden victory, having not expected success to come so soon. It shouldn't have surprised him given that this was only the tutorial area, but still, it was a nice surprise for once in this game. He hadn't quite prepared for what to do next though, and as Cyndaquil turned to look at him, he at first only blinked as he tried to remember what to do next.
It was the Mom NPC who helped him out in the end, placing the Pokeball that she'd demonstrated with into his empty hand. That was enough to kick-start Nero's brain again it seemed, and he was soon launching the item over at the fallen Purrloin as he'd so often imagined trainer doing in those old GameBoy games.
As it wobbled and eventually clicked, Nero watched it with bated breath, eventually breathing a sigh of relief as the capture was complete. COD13 and Mom had started talking again, extra explanations coming up on his display alongside instructions for how to restart the tutorial again if he'd like another go but oh no, that was quite enough for one day.
Picking up the Pokeball and turning back towards the player who had encouraged him in the first place, the 'smug' grin that he tried to pull off came out far more goofy than intended as his genuine pride slipped through to ruin the image. "A bit like that, yeah?"

"That is it!" she says, clapping at his well-fought victory. "The first of many catches. And the cat suits you, do you not think? With the dark clothes and smoky eyes?" Torino grins at the brooding and sneaky aura that Nero and his new companion share. Some people say that pets and their owners look alike. Whether this is by chance or subconscious choice is unknown, but in this case she could put it down to a quirk of the random tutorial spawner.
"So what will you call it?" she asks, her eyes flicking to the Pokeball in Nero's hands. "I noticed that your Cyndaquil does not have a nickname. Is that normal for you?" She tilts her head to the side. Torino likes to give her Pokemon names that reminder her of her home, a warm and welcoming place. She names them after food, or after people in her life. There was little connecting the names outside of some vague thread to Torino herself.
She kneels down beside Cyndaquil and hold out a hand for it to smell. Like cats or dogs, Pokemon often respond better when they have a chance to get used to someone's presence. She beamed at the little fire Pokemon. "You did so good! Very strong fire. I could feel the heat from way back. I am sure you will grow to be wonderful and strong."
Thank you so much for waiting. Back to you Nero!

The clapping felt... kind of good actually. He almost wanted it to sound patronising, almost wanted an excuse to get mad about it, but he couldn't deny the way it fanned the pride in his chest into an even larger flame. Dumb game making him feel things...
As for the Pokemon suiting him... yeah, he couldn't deny that actually. It was one he vaguely recognised, and something at the back of his mind told him it might even be a dark type, or evolve into one perhaps? That would make it an extra good fit for him if true. He'd been expecting a Pidgey or Rattata, and while they would have been good experience too, he probably wouldn't have thought much of them as an additional teammate though. This one though... yeah, this Torino was right, it seemed like a good fit. "Yeah I guess," he replied, sounding a little awkward as he was forced to acknowledge his rather emo look. He'd felt very cool while designing his avatar, but hearing its features described back at him was a little embarrassing.
"What will I what?" Oh right, nicknames. "Oh, I don't usually... um... Are those really common here?" The NPCs in the old games had never nicknamed their Pokemon either (or at least not that the game showed you), and he'd never done much multiplayer stuff, so he was used to being surrounded by Pokemon without names. It had never felt weird not to nickname his own in those settings, but here? "I guess I just hadn't thought about it," he answered, though there was a clear hesitancy to his voice. After all, he wasn't against the concept of nicknames, he just... didn't feel particularly creative. And what if people thought his nicknames were stupid? It just gave them another thing to judge him for.
Cyndaquil took to this stranger far quicker than it seemed his trainer was doing. The small fire type sniffed the hand curiously as he was approached, before bouncing excitedly at the compliment, letting out little squeaks to show how pleased he was by the words. It had Nero snorting under his breath, amused at the display. They really did program a lot of personality in to these little guys, didn't they?

"Oh it is good to give special names to your friends!" Torino says, pushing the point. "It is like a secret! All people know 'Cyndaquil', but it is only you two who know his real name." She stands up, a sly smile on her digital face. "For us trainers it is just one more secret name, yes?
Torino sends out her own fire type, a Houndour with wide, playful eyes. The dog sees Cyndaquil's bouncing and shifts restlessly in the grass, moving weight from side to side, her stumpy tail wagging furiously. "Friend? Friend?" She barks, wet embers falling from the sides of her mouth.
"Go play, Marocchino," Torino says, and her dog leaps forward, bounding around Cyndaquil and barking with excitement. Torino turns to Nero. "I use names that remind me of things I love. People. Drinks. Places. I called her Marocchino because it is my favorite drink! Whenever I say her name I can feel the steam. The taste of coffee and cocoa. Her name is hot, just like her fire."
She looks between Cyndaquil and Nero. Her mind fills with comparisons. The jumping is like her baby brother when they were little. The long nose and squeaks remind her of a hedgehog she caught from the woods one Autumn. The flames are different to Marocchino's. More a burst than a warm, inviting trickle. It is the ignition of a bonfire with too much starter. "What does he remind you of?"

A secret? So... he could give his Pokemon a nickname but only use it himself? No-one would need to hear it and judge him for it, but it could still be a cool little bit of personalisation for him? Yeah, alright, he could do that. It still involved a bit of creativity that he didn't feel came very naturally to him, but there was certainly less pressure on it now.
Before he had time to come up with anything though, a new Pokemon was sent out to join the fray. A Houndour - he definitely recognised that one. A good job his new cat was locked away in a Pokeball then, as he couldn't imagine it would get on well with this canine Pokemon. Cyndaquil would likely fare better though, even if he seemed a bit cautious at first. He had stopped his bouncing and turned towards the Houndour, still and silent at first as he looked it over and listened to the sharp barking, confirming that it was indeed the friend that it was claiming to be. After a moment though, he seemed to relax, stepping a little closer and sniffing at the Houndour curiously. He was meeting so many new species today already, how fun!
As the Houndour began leaping around, Cyndaquil turning rapidly to try and keep up with its movement, Nero looked back up towards the other player. The idea of naming them after familiar things was a good one, and having a theme of some sort was probably good too. Oh, he had an idea, maybe he should name them all after drin - no she'd literally just said that, that wasn't an idea, that was copying. Something the Cyndaquil reminded him of that wasn't a drink... He turned to look over hsi starter, brows furrowing in thought, as he came up with...
"A Cyndaquil." Yes, he knew that made him sound dumb, but it really was the only thing coming to mind. "I don't know, a Pokemon. A fire one." Still not good enough, think harder. "A hedgehog?" Maybe this was hopeless...
With a sigh, Nero's shoulders dropped a little in defeat as he turned his attention back to the other player. "I'll think about it," he replied, a half-hearted promise to come up with an answer later. "Thanks for your help I guess." Gratitude never came smoothly to him unfortunately. "Maybe see you around somewhere." But hopefully not. He didn't like the idea of people that had seen him struggle through the tutorials catching up with him again later, though he imagined that might be impossible to avoid...
