YOU'RE LISTENING TO RADIO UNOVR ❝Hello, this is DJ Kallisto broadcasting from Briarbane Settlement, serving you the best music on the go. We're currently taking song requests, so make sure to give us those sweet tunes on the correct chat channel: #RadioUNOVR. (They're not letting me go until I complete this--).❞
You suddenly hear a static buzz after the self-confession from the DJ, who sounded like a natural but then was deadpan in the next moment. The notification and audio clip would pop up if one was looking through the server chat messages, and now there was a new specific channel for song submissions. There seems to be additional instructions though:

Radio UNOVR? Oh, hell yeah! Tuesday loves herself a good soundtrack, and there's nothing quite like a great song to get her in the mood to do some exploration. Just her, the vastness of the virtual outdoors, and some good jams. What's not to love? Hell, that's how she accidentally ended up getting herself her Punk Girl title... Standing at the highest point of a dilapidated building in the Forgotten Nexus, the Alchemist Knight smirks while listening to the broadcast. Her intricately adorned armour shines silver in the light of the sun, the white feathers of a heavy Rainbow Flame Cloak shimmering just as a strong wind causes it to billow out. Her blonde ponytail is now tousled, yet cat ears perk up, not seeming to mind the wind at all as she clicks open her UI, navigating through chat window after chat window until opening the right one: Yo, Kal! Nice gig you got going. Let's start off with a classic to get us into that exploration vibe: Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf 😎 We're all looking for a little adventure out here, and this one's an adventurer anthem. Immaculate vibes. And watch your backs out there, my gals, guys, and all sort of pals. The power cords at the Nexus have some BITE ⚡Good hunting! 🫡 Satisfied with her request, she takes a leap. It's time to go back to exploring.

Logan did like his fair share of music, but he wasn't really the sort to have strong feelings about it. Mostly he listened to whatever his parents or his chauffeur or whoever happened to have on in the car, which was usually a mix of classic rock and pop songs. But neither of those felt exactly right for the tone he wanted to set here, especially when keeping in mind that he was submitting them not as himself, exactly, but as Valentine.
(Well, maybe Valentine would go for some of those bubblegum-sweet pop songs. But Logan wasn't quite willing to volunteer himself publicly as the sort who listened to that sort of thing. Even if anyone who said Taylor Swift didn't have a good voice was clearly lying.)
So, what would fit? It'd feel weird recommending dad music to the world, but nominating the latest pop hit didn't feel right either. Plus, Ostellia didn't feel that mainstream to begin with. It'd need something different, something you didn't hear every day...
And so, Logan got an idea and raced to enter it into the chat before he second-guessed himself or lost his nerve.
I'm nominating Darude Sandstorm. Or Sandstorm, by Darude, technically. It's upbeat, it's a banger, no lyrics to distract you from what you're doing... and c'mon, who wouldn't get a kick out of coming across this while exploring the desert, fitting title and all?

A radio station for Ostellia, huh? Man, that took Jinx back. Or rather, it took Sheila back, to when she had dabbled in college radio back at U of F before finding out the hard way that even an hour could be a *lot* of time to fill if you didn't have a plan but needed to prevent dead air at all costs. And that even her classmates didn't really want to hear her rambling nonstop to fill the space. (Which was fair enough. She didn't really enjoy hearing herself rambling, either. And did her voice really sound like that?)
But as for a song... well, the lady who suggested songs without lyrics was onto something, she thought. That was one great thing about video game music, that it was good for setting a vibe without having words to get in the way. (More than once she'd fallen victim to the old "listening to a song while writing something down and then realizing you'd put some of the song lyrics in what you were writing down" trick...)
And that took Jinx, or rather Sheila, back even further than the radio station mention had, to growing up back home with her Dad, how he'd fool around on the guitar and sometimes whistle along with what he was playing if he felt like showing off, and it always felt a little like magic.
Of course, it was one thing to think of one of those old songs her father used to play, and it was quite another to actually come up with its name and the artist who did it, especially when you couldn't really type "instrumental song that goes DEE da da do da dooooo" into Google and expect a coherent response. But Jinx got there eventually.
I'm nominating Classical Gas, by Mason Williams. It's an older song, but that doesn't mean it's not fun to rock out to just the same! And it definitely has that sense of awe and discovery and excitement that fits into the whole exploring Ostellia thing, you get me?

Big Bee was chilling on his board just off the Drowned Harbor. Despite the Ultra Beasts and absolutely abyssal vibes, the place could be pretty nice if you had a board, some buds and some beams. Sunbeams, obviously, not the rusted steel beams that poked out of the water like needles at the wrong end of a beach. I mean it obviously had the steel needle beams too, but you didn't NEED them for a good time.
"This is like, ay Taka?" Bee said, as he equipped his thickest sunglasses, disabled sunburn, and plucked a frosty beverage from the net tethered to his board. He cracked it open in a spritz of watermelon-scented air. "Oh hell yeah. You smell that Taka? That's what Sunday smells like."
He opened his UI again, ignoring the fact that it was 2:07 PM on a Thursday and he was most definitely playing at work, and clicked over to one of his favorite UNOVR channels. 96.3 FM, the home of crowdsourced music and coerced testimonials. He nodded his head along to the soothing fretwork of Mason Williams' Classical Gas, and as the last notes played out across the water he sent in his own request.
Yo you've GOT to play the theme from Hawaii Five-0 next. Not only is it a show-stopping, toe-tapping, bop-stomper, but that jam is thicker than molasses and has, like, eight key changes. It's the perfect cream for an afternoon at the beach, and you'll be laying it on thick like a layer of SPF +100 barbecue sauce onto a steak sandwich, TRUST me.
"Listen to this one Taka," he said, slapping his Blastoise's shell in excitement. "This is gonna blow the water right out of your pipes."

"Hey that was Bee on the radio!" Gil cried out excitedly. "I wonder what he's up to!"
"Surfin." Orion quipped back, three rusty nails perched precariously in his mouth while he hammered another one into a plank of wood. He'd managed to scamper his ass up one of the many tangled jungle gym-like structures in the the Nexus and was working on installing a makeshift bridge from one tower to another to help aid wayward travelers navigate the tetanus inducing clusterfuck that the madlads at Hydance had cooked up in an coke fueled echerian nightmare.
"How do you know that?" Gil asked, antennae wiggling as he skittered closer from his spot on.
"First of all, if that isn't the most aggressively Bee surf anthem I don't know what is." He lined up another nail and smacked the Jesus out of it, wedging in into the rickety planks. "Second of all, he asked if I wanted to come and I said I wasn't feelin very beachy after our last adventure in the harbor."
"What happened?"
"Not talkin bout it." Orion shot back quickly, slamming the hammer into the wood and causing it to splinter slightly. "FUCK!" The osha compliant beach bug shrunk at the bark, leaving the fighter feeling a little guilty as he set down the hammer and gave the brave boy some well deserved headpats. "Sorry bud, I just uh..." he paused. "Give me some time and I'll talk about it."
The whimpod seemed to brighten at this admission and wiggled a little closer, practically climbing into his lap. "Maybe some tunes could cheer you up! Request a song!" Unable to deny the glimmer in the builder bugs beady eyes, Orion relented and opened up the chat.
Hey hey NA Gang, it's everyone's favorite musclemancer here to conjure some radical tunes. I know we were all sitting on our hands waiting patiently for this fucking PRIMO content, and boy howdy is this shit wild. Remember though, we're on that grind looking for a way to kick Corruption in the teeth! The waits over, breaks over. Lets get this bread and unearth these secrets to some classic Fall Out Boy.

The next caller buzzed onto the line, their voice far more distorted than the previous callers. Like if you threw a .mp3 file into a jpeg cruncher, embedded it into a CD, and then shoved that CD into a tape deck. Additionally, the .mp3 file only contained screaming.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! HOLY 🐙🐙🐙🐙! I’M BEING MAULED BY TENTA-HORRORS BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION! KALEXA, PLAY STAYIN’ ALIVE BY THE BEE GEES!!
There’s a crash, the sound of waves—and something like a toilet flushing. All that came through for a moment was incomprehensible blurbling, bubbles popping, and waves—until the caller seemed to break through the surface, spitting out water. A piplup nooted for vengeance somewhere off to the side. The robotic voice coughed before hissing into the mic.
I’m being so forreal right now. Play it, boy. I know where you live.
Another string of words that sounded like Pingu, kill it with fire! before the line was cut with a loud, grating BZZZZZT.

Joy had to admit, the vibes of Ostellia were peak. Ruined apocalyptic cityscape? Filled with aliens from a world beyond all understanding? Wasn't this supposed to be Pokemon? Cute and cuddly? She certainly wasn't complaining, in fact it only made her laugh.
There was nobody to stop her art here. Experimenting with paint colors, she scavenged a few abandoned cans from a broken hardware store, and just casually listened to the radio as everyone made her suggestions. None of them seemed to have any remotely similar themes. The Hawaii Five-O theme, Darude Sandstorm, Staying Alive? What was this, meme hour? At least Born to be Wild was indeed, a banger.
After slopping together some uncomfortable-gross purple colors and a single shade of bright lime green onto a brush making some awkward brown, she finally just sighed. This wasn't a good color. It didn't help that the muse music was nonexistent. Sure, some of the songs were fine. But they weren't really her style. With that in mind, she finally just gave up and dumped the gross paint can of ugly brown over the edge before calling in herself.
ayo. don't you think its time we played some real freaking apocalypse music out here?
Everyone who lived here is dead and people destroyed it i think. so yknow. so i think it's only fitting for some real tunes. Hail the Apocalypse by Avatar. Shit's absolutely great. Also, wild music vid. check it. a lady does some dope 1920's dances to metal songs before exploding among other things.

Requests come and go, and the playlist plays on. It makes for an interesting (read: hilarious) jump from one genre to the next, and by the time Domino herself decides to type her own request in a chat channel that buzzes with activity, she's smirking to herself — typing into the chatbox one-handed while her other hand holds a lit cigarette between two fingers. Ah, but, what to request? What is the one song that would be a hilarious choice, a bop, fitting to the theme and her musical preferences, and also something only Domino herself could say with a straight face? The answer is obvious to her. great stuff, but this radio is missing some good synth 🎹🎶 play me True Survivor by the man, the myth, the legend DAVID HASSELHOFF. the lyrics say it all + it has a great choice for a first word 😉

Did Jinx know that the radio station rules said one request per person? Sure.
Did Jinx care, once the mood struck her? Not especially.
After all, this song was just so perfectly fitting to the story of Ostellia, the city that once was and the apocalypse that never should have been... and yet nobody had suggested it yet! Sure, this game was geared towards kids and all, but it wasn't that old of a song, really--not even as old as Jinx, er, Sheila herself! And it was just on the radio this morning, which was what had gotten her thinking about it in the first place, so clearly people still listened to it, right? Surely somebody had to give it a shout-out, and since nobody else was stepping up, that left Jinx to do it herself.
Plus, she'd made her first request right when the radio station first asked for songs, and now she was on the tail end of things, right before they wrapped it all up... maybe they wouldn't notice that she had requested a song before, given how long it had been between the two requests.
It was a good theory, anyway.
I'm nominating 99 Red Balloons, by Nena. A city in ruins, a world gone awry... this song just SCREAMS Ostellia vibes to me!

Genesis--or Shiloh, really--had been thinking long and hard about what song to request here.
On the one hand, there were any number of popular songs out there about the end of the world, life after things go wrong, that sort of thing. Picking one of those would be an easy choice.
But Genesis never did like going in for the easy way out.
Plus, Shiloh was thinking of things pragmatically. UNOVR was a major video game, and any song that got featured in the game was therefore going to get lots of listens and a steep rise in popularity. Why waste that on songs and musicians that were already well-known, when they could use that chance to expose some unknown talent to the world in a big way?
And Genesis did have their fair share of obscure indie musicians they liked to listen to... though the first really obscure one that came to mind, a lot of his songs were more focused on ~love~ than something befitting Ostellia vibes, and even the one song that kind of fit didn't quite have the right Pokemon world vibes, they figured. But that was fine. That guy'd been dead for a few decades anyway; better to pick someone that could enjoy the instant fame that being featured in UNOVR would grant them. Similarly, while they were a big fan of one band that'd broken up a couple years back and were tempted to suggest a song that really fit the last raid better anyway or just a troll choice that'd be hilarious to hear in-game but also kind of DOES have the right vibes, Shiloh figured it'd make more sense to pick an artist that was still touring and actively soliciting listeners.
Which brought them to that folk artist they'd seen in concert a few weeks back, and two songs of hers that seemed especially fitting. Shiloh deliberated between the two for some time, but ended up deciding that the more upbeat one wasn't quite the right fit. Maybe it was something the former residents of Ostellia would play as the area fell to powers unknown, but it didn't really fit the players or the gameplay as they were now, the ruins and the mystery that remained.
No, better to pick that indie artist's song which had that same bittersweet flavor, seeking mystery and the unknown even while knowing the toll that such exploration might well take in the end.
...though. It occurred to Genesis, partway through planning their suggestion, that there was always the off-chance that this particular indie artist might not want her song featured in UNOVR, instant fame or no. She did have something of an anti-capitalist streak to her music, after all. Maybe working with a huge company wasn't really of interest to her.
Was it against the rules to suggest a back-up song--one of those popular songs Shiloh had dismissed early on, for lack of a better idea--in case the initial suggestion got caught up in some sort of copyright snarl?
Well, Genesis was going to find out, one way or another.
I want to suggest the song Harbor, by Carsie Blanton. Not exactly the most well-known song, but the whole seeking out mystery even after getting hurt by it before vibe seems very fitting to Ostellia and to the UNOVR plotline as a whole thus far. Plus, it seems like a lot of the suggestions are more upbeat stuff, so it makes sense to balance that out with a song that's a little more somber and bittersweet, right? But uh, I know licensing this stuff must be a legal mess and all, and I have no idea what Carsie Blanton thinks about... any of this, so in case that gets caught up in problems with the licensing agreement or whatever, go for... It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by REM. I mean, the title about gives it away. The world ended, in the backstory at least, and the area was altered forever... and then here we are, going about our own business just the same. {GENESIS' BACK-UP REQUEST}
