Here's the thing: being at Mistra with the few people in this game that Tuesday actually considers to be her friends is the antithesis of everything she had fought for. Her efforts had failed, Mistra hadn't been purified, c'est la vie. But... Why do her friends have to do insane shit and have to be drawn to this fucked up and obviously dangerous place? Is that a metaphor for the fact that they are friends with someone like her? Obviously not, how dare you think so. Anyway. They're here now, and that means that she's going to look out for them, but that's kind of hard to do when some of them decide to do more of usual insane shit and go off on their own to gods know where. "Kaz!" She calls out to Kazuki before he can get too far, pointing at him with her pickaxe. Is the threat on purpose? Perhaps. "Get back here or I swear to all the gods that I won't save your ass if a Krampus-looking motherfucker in a Santa hat crawls up from some hole and tries to eat you alive."Overly specific and unlikely to happen? Maybe so, but Mistra contains demons of endless variety and we're rolling with the holiday theme thanks to the painfully ceaseless music. Seriously, could someone turn that off already?! Wait... Shit. She had forgotten that Rose Garden is here as well. "Rosie, don't repeat anything Auntie Tuesday just said."Tuesday may be a monster in a plethora of ways, but teaching children to swear is not one of them! Speaking of children and thus of the childish, though... Ada seems to be really enjoying himself and is actually behaving surprisingly well. Maybe a little too well. It's almost suspicious, really. Is this the real starlitlover? She squints for a second when watching him, but then she smiles as if nothing had just happened and gets back to the search, still smiling when her pickaxe breaks cleanly through a dusty femur and hits something far more solid. "Did you find another fossil, Ada?"[Fossil]SvEnxsQv1d15 GRENINJA || 550/700 1d15

Alistair had such confidence in him- Blackthorne wasn’t convinced. More people didn’t really mean more safety- It usually meant more complications…
He frowned, trying to untangle what to say, catching sight of Domino, and her massive dudunsparce. That drew a smile from him, and he gave the woman a slight nod. Seeing her there helped- She said she loved being support, so that was one relief off his shoulders.
But- Alistair’s… um, friend, Lacrimosa- seemed… very… in character. Blackthorne looked over at Ali, trying to see how he and his pidove were doing. “Oh- um, that seems… uh. Interesting?” Blackthorne’s compliment faltered as he noticed what the item was. Huh. Certainly… different.
A flicker caught his attention- it was Alistair’s friend. And with him was not a pokemon- not really. It looked like a sprigatito, but ephemeral, like he was only able to see it out of the edges of his vision. The man’s health, too, was incredibly low-
Only 100 total hp? Why was he here?
“Um… ” Blackthorne let out a sigh. It- it probably couldn’t be helped. This was Alistair’s friend. “Trick or treat,” He ordered, the pumpkaboo giggling madly, shooting candies at the space the phantom seemed to not-occupy.

Rose was immediately smiling as Tuesday adjusted her blanket for her. It was the positive affection from an adult that she had always craved, and if she wasn't currently here in the middle of a dangerous crater, she might have asked to just sleep near by them.
Her Orthworm was already hard at work, digging up a few bits of the gross dirt. Although, he seemed to be spitting it back out instead of actually swallowing it like normal before moving to keep an eye out. Rose just frowned softly, completely missing Bunya's completely unhinged moment of squishing tinsel covering her hands in blood.
She didn't, however, miss hearing Auntie Tuesday call out to someone called Kaz.
"Get back here or I _____ to all the gods that I won't save your ___ if a Krampus-looking motherf_____ in a Santa hat crawls up from some hole and tries to ___ you alive."
Rose just blinked, eyes wide staring up at the catgirl with big wide sleepy eyes, totally confused. It was like her words just grew muddled, hazy, like trying to hear through a thick fog. Or the classroom next door to hers. What exactly was she not supposed to repeat? It almost reminded her of how her Seedot friend's words failed to reach her ears sometime.
"Uh," She began, hearing the creepy Christmas music echo in her ears. What in the world was going on? What was this silly event anyways? Was she dreaming? Why was there weird music on a fossil dig? Shouldn't there be like, dinosaur music? What even was Dinosaur Music? Music made by dinosaurs? She suddenly really wanted to hear Dinosaur Music to hear a dinosaur sing.
Did Santa like Dinosaurs? She sure hoped so. She hoped he gave all the dinosaurs presents back then. They probably deserved lots of presents. The meteor meant they got no more presents. A soft frown formed on her face at the thought. No more presents. She didn't get that many presents this year either, maybe that meant a meteor was coming? Two presents was a lot less than three from last year.
"What's a Krampus? Is he a Dinosaur? Did he like Chrimmas? I hope he was on the Nice List." Rose finally dared to speak after her mind finished its sleepy wandering. Gripping the pickaxe with both of her hands as she lifted it up, it slipped out of her hands at first only for her to activate her Catcher ability and have her hands stick to it. She swung down, only to be completely off beat, and find nothing. "Why would he look at my mom? Tuesday, I don't get it."
Just like how she didn't get how this event worked. With an upset flutter of her wings, she just happened to swing down again right on beat, pulling something up from the dirt with any luck.

Nero's attention flicked back to Saint as the friendly quester addressed him again, though it seemed Nero's less than stellar greeting had scared him away. Good... good? Yeah, he needed to concentrate on this. It was a rhythm game, right? That took focus to get right, and he'd already proven that he wasn't great at that. It was good that a familiar face who had helped to bolster him the last time he was in an unusual and potentially uncomfortable situation was walking away from him so soon... That was fine actually...
Anyway, whatever, it was just a game. Most of those were single player anyway, and he hadn't started this one for the social aspects. It was all about the... um... nostalgia? ... He hadn't actually worked out what it was that kept drawing him back towards UNOVR each day yet. It was an escape, something to do, and far more interesting than his real life was these days... And actually maybe that first one was the reason he should be dwelling on now. How many exercises had he skipped now? How many video appointments had he just not shown up to? Maybe 'escape' was too mild of a term - he was actively running away every time he slipped the WorldScreen back on.
The pickax slammed the ground with enough force to make the Electrike jump in surprise. The vibrations rippled up his arms, shaking his thoughts away just as he had hoped it would, his teeth gritting together in aggressive focus now. No more thinking, no more talking, just working. The pickax slammed down again, Nero initially forgetting all about keeping in time with the music until a few intentionally rhythmic yaps from his little partner Pokemon brought him back on track again. With less force and better timing, the pickax swung again, the Electrike pawing at the dirt alongside him to help clear whatever it was that they'd uncovered.
Maybe orioncayge would look over again and see what he was doing and be impressed with his hard work...
... oh shut up!

The gang was all here and the stage was set for whatever sinister shenanigans were soon to start. Mystra was not the place he would have picked to be a particularly great spot for a Christmas party, but here they were. Maybe he'd put a bug in Bee's ear about having the next one at something more chill, like an Applebees perhaps. He could really go for a Bahama mamma right now, digital or otherwise. Before his mind could ferry off down the rabbit hole of digital drugs and how they might be the future of safe recreational use, Achilles was thumping him on the shoulder.
"Earth to Orion," he would hiss looking him up and down. "You choking on fumes or something?" Orion blinked as he shook away his tangent, taking a deep breath and letting his gaze dart back around to the group around him. It was showtime, and he would have to at least play the part of willing participant. It wasn't a particularly hard act, Orion had recently discovered he'd been quite good at playing pretend. Other factors like his best friend and...well he wasn't quite sure what he and Blue were but he knew it existed somewhere beyond the bounds of your typical rivalry unless you were reading a particularly spicy romance novel. Factor in everyone else, which was a broad sweep of the hand in regards to the gathered gang, and he was supposed to be having a good time.
Might as well.
"Well then, we should probably put our heads together and pick a sick digging spot or..." a smirk would cross his face as he looked around to make sure the way was clear. Once he was sure he wasn't about to absolutely fuck up someone's digital Christmas, he would take his pickaxe by the end of the shaft and with a swift swing of his arm he would flip it up and away from the party like one might try to flip a water bottle. The pick pirouetted perilously through the pit, plopping down into the peat perfectly on the point of the pick.
"I believe that RNGeezus has picked us a winner."
Turning back to the gang, Orion would give them a trademark Cayge smile and a thumbs up, like he'd just done something incredibly clever before striding over, plucking the pick from the peat and spinning it once as he brought it to the peak of his reach and plunged it back down percussively. "Lets get to it gang!" his gaze would dart to Bee before a smirk would cross his face. "Just make sure we steer clear of any talking cement."
He would raise his pick again, his gaze sweeping over the others to make sure they were okay. Tuesday had taken to protecting Rose like he'd thought they would, the latter was cheerfully enjoying herself without a care in the world. Nero was applying himself with gusto, which doubled the power of his next pick plunge, clearly he could not be outdone by the new guy.

Bee started to swing his pickaxe in earnest, following Bunya's advice and chunking through the layer of human-remained topsoil as he chatted with Josh Devlin, Hekate, Honya and Cypress. Jaws the Granbull followed suit, using his broad, pink quartz paws to pull away massive clods of the rotten earth.
"Good think I brought a dog!" Bee commented, as his pick hit the soil, making a tiny GREAT! appear in the air.
"Yeah I think this part is new, or at least I've never heard anything about it before," Bee said to Hekate. "Last time orioncayge and I were here, we ended up in an abandoned town. There were all these...I guess zombies? They were infected by some rot creature that was in the water treatment plant. Pretty wild stuff." Bee remembered the swollen red eyes of the beast. He swallowed. "Mistra can be a bit, uh, rough. What happened to you and your little guy?"
He nodded at Honya's question. It was a good one. Mistra was one of the strangest places in the game. "Moving through Mistra can be a real ordeal. Not just because of the specters, but because the landscape and everything in it is pulled straight from your subconscious." He tapped his head to indicate where most people kept their brain. "Unless you went in being previously traumatized by the inside of a massive crater, you probably wouldn't end up anywhere like here."
Bee thought about it for a moment. Was this a premade location then? Or was the crater the culmination of their collective trauma? Had THE CURVE been lovingly rendered by someone in the graphics department, or did it represent some deep, ancestral fear. Like the simian fear of falling. Or the reptilian fear of being hit with a meteor.

The ominous hum of her wings had drawn a crowd. Or one guy, at least.
"Big... dragonfly," Jade said to Big Bee, "...But I see what you did there. Nice." She opened her mouth to say more, maybe something like wanna form an alliance? or let's stick together to increase our chances of survival, but it seemed the social player was just making his rounds, like a host at their own party. Weird vibe to get from a person in a video game, but there you go.
That left Jade with Emery V., who she was still trying to impress into thinking she was interesting enough to keep around and not-leave-alone-to-die. "I don't even know that guy," she said, watching Big Bee start mining. This music was giving her the creepy-crawlies, but at least the beat was consistent. The green-haired Catcher followed his lead, hoisting the heavy tool over her head and letting it fall to strike the ground. There was no sound where it hit: just a puff of dark ash as the tile disintegrated.
[Fossil]YL2zK1Z51-15
<I can give it a try if you get tired! I've never used a pickaxe before,> said Goose, still hanging off her elbow. Jade gritted her teeth as she swung the pickaxe again. "Be a lot... easier if you were... on the ground," she forced out through gritted teeth. She felt sweat break out along her brow and stopped to lean on her shovel, prying at the Monferno's fingers. "C'mon, gettoff. I'm trying to get things done."
Goose danced in place slightly, keeping her feet light off the ground. A small cloud of ash was slowly being stirred up by her constant movements. <Gotta stay alert!> she said when Jade shot her a look mid-dig, <Like I said, something's weird here. Not just all the bones! Something in the air. Or maybe in my soul.>
It was on the tip of Jade's tongue to say you don't even have a soul when she reconsidered. Was that fair to say to something that seemed as real and lifelike as the Monferno? Hell, who said people even had souls to begin with? It was a totally constructed concept, and maybe even a religious one.
So instead of asking her first question, Jade asked this instead, directed at anyone in earshot. "D'you think souls are real?"

Bee smiled as Jade Jager got his joke, and was then deeply wounded when she said she didn't even know him. Of course she knew him! He was Big Bee! He'd even introduced himself! He closed out of the UI before he could finish sending her a friend request.
But then she announced a loud question to the dig site at large.
"D'you think souls are real?"
Now there was a question Bee could get stuck into. Just like he was getting stuck into this crawling, blackened soil. It was like trying to scoop tar out of a glove-box. Somehow it slid back into place with every hit. Whatever the ground was here, it was at least semi-liquid.
"Of course souls are real!" Big Bee said. "Calling it a soul is a bit misleading, but we all know what it is an experience it, right? A soul is what gives you that feeling when you MAKE something. It's like...pride in creation? Any time you play music and finish a piece of art, or spend time with a friend, you can feel your soul just glowing."
"Just like your stomach tells you when you're thirst and your feet tell you when you've walked too much, your soul tells you that the whole point of life is to create things!"

This still wasn’t the feather! Adarsa frowned, pouting like a child. This was unfair. He needed it. And it wasn’t showing up for him- Just everyone else at the event.
He hefted the pickaxe again, eyes scanning the ground for any sort insight or hint- But it was dark, and all the ground looked the same. So, he…
He picked a spot at random. What else was he supposed to do?

It stunk. Stank? Hell if she knew. Jade only knew that she became more conscious of it in putrid waves, the sickening smell of burning fat and flesh. It coiled around her like an invisible serpent, throwing a tightening loop around her windpipe.
She leaned on her shovel, trying desperately not to gag. “Where’s that coming from?” she said, pulling up her ninja mask to try and filter out the stench. It had no effect– her ailment was of the mind, not body.
It made her imagine things she didn't want to.
Big Bee answering her question was at least partially a distraction. The green-haired woman tried to nod, but found herself retching instead.
<Are you okay? What's up?> Goose asked curiously, jumping back up onto her shoulder to peer into her eyes. <Are you sick?>
“You mean you can't–” Jade shut up, clamping her jaw as she felt another wave of nausea coming on. She pinched her nose. “...Never mind,” she croaked when the wave passed. Smoke. Sizzling hair.
Why am I trying to hide this? Should she still be having normal conversations, trying to pretend everything was okay? Hell, there was no way this was just the alcohol coming back to bite her in the VR world, right?
“Good answer,” she finally managed to tell Big Bee. She leaned harder on her shovel and almost fell over as it dug an inch into another ash tile and disintegrated it, dropping a foot down. “But for those of us that don't create nothing, what does that mean? What if you're just motoring along, day by day, waiting for the next paycheck?”
To create was human. But maybe the most human thing was just laying in bed, sleepless, late at night, wishing you could fix all the mistakes you'd made. There was no soul there, that was for sure.
Maybe that place was where souls went to die.

His session of calmly obliterating his anger out on contaminated rock was interrupted by Tuesday, calling him back to the hell from whence he came. He scoffed, pulling out a SPELL TAG from the shattered rubble.
“THE KRAMPUS-LOOKING MOTHERFUCKER IS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!” He hollered back, only to sputter as a mound of ash, crushed human mineral, and garbage was tossed in his face. “Horse, what the fuck!”
<Language,> Mudsdale huffed, kicking more rubble at him, forcing the man to dodge as if he were dancing Scottish Highland. <There are children here.> Her eyes moved to Rose Garden, ear flicking at the sound of her words. Poor girl sounded so confused.
“I learned to say fuck when I was five. It’s good character development,” Kazuki retorted. The ash felt terrible on bare skin, all grit that made it hard not to sneeze. Which was deserved, because PPE existed for a reason.
<And what character did you develop into?> Mudsdale hummed.
“The kind that’s getting back to work! Quit playing!” He took his pickaxe from the ground, preparing to resume swinging, his movements carried by the strange merry jingle as if coaxed by siren’s song.

By sheer luck, Rook managed to hit something. He paused, pickaxe embedded in solid rock, before carefully extracting it and brushing away the rubble. Much of it was only ash, and he was fortunate this character model came with gloves, though he still found himself yearning for proper equipment.
“Helios, it appears I’ve struck gold,” Rook chuckled, resting the handle of his pickaxe against his leg and brushing the chunk of stone he’d unearthed until the jagged pattern at its center revealed itself.
“I do appreciate the detail.” It was in-tact and almost perfectly round, more a prop for a show than an actual fossil, but there was an interesting shape embedded into it. “A… fish, perhaps? Fossilized Drake, it says, so maybe there is a fish-like dragon in this game. Would you like to take a look?”
If Helios were to agree, he’d lend it, and if he didn’t, Rook would simply pocket it. “This is actually quite fun,” he hummed, resuming his digging, unaware that his beloved Rowlet had gone from the furred collar around his neck—now having burrowed fully under the jacket, perched on his back under the cover in his attempt to drown out the noise. It made Rook look hunchbacked.

As the beat went on, its tones became creepier and creepier, causing Josh to lose his sense of rhythm and even drop his pick. More familiar faces began to crowd around him, too. "Rose Garden and Nero ! Fancy running into you two out here!" Josh greeted them, looking up to see Mistra's corruption begin to visibly affect Granmarg. Unfamiliar with how it worked as of yet, he began to brim with worry. Granmarg was his only mount, and he was a long ways from being able to craft a saddle for another of his Pokémon.
Any other noise just to get his mind off that grating, warped holiday music. It was dreadful to listen to, but he had to keep listening to it if he wanted to unearth the top layers and get to the bottom layer. If what Dr. Bunya said was true, all the good stuff was at the bottom. "Granmarg, hang in there, and pace yourself! If it ever becomes too much, just tell me. We'll high-tail it out of here."
"I'll be fine," the Mudsdale answered, though he might not have been forthcoming about his condition...

Jade had a sharp eye out for anyone else who might affirm her olfactory senses weren't going off the deep end, and two dudes in particular (Rook and Josh Devlin) didn't look like they were having a fun time. "You guys smell that shit too, right?" she called, then immediately regretted raising her voice. Not because it echoed, or carried, but because it felt swallowed. As if something huge and unknowable was not only listening, but standing very near.
It was the same fear that led people to douse their campfires in the middle of the night-- for fear the signs of life might draw the eyes of the unknown.
"Sometimes I miss real life," Jade muttered to herself, reaching down into the hole to grope around for the fossil she'd uncovered. She flinched as her fingers brushed against something slithery-- more of that creepy tinsel?!-- and snatched her hand back, but when she leaned over the hole to peer into it, there was nothing out of the ordinary. Just a piece of pinkish stone with a weird, liver-shaped outline on it.
<Ooh, what's that?> Goose peered in from the other side, bumping against Jade's head. "Ow! I dunno, lemme check," the green-haired woman said, rubbing her temple with a scowl.
Against her better judgment, steeling her will, she reached down again and felt her fingers close around the rock. She pulled it out, looked it over with no sign of recognition, then handed it to Goose. "Here. Hold onto this, I dunno if the doctor will... want it later." She got another whiff of burning hair and flesh and tried not to retch. "Ugh. Christ, I'm gonna be sick."
<I'll dig the next one,> Goose offered, wrapping her prehensile tail around the fossil to keep it safe and tugging the shovel away from her trainer in the meanwhile. <Hiyah! Hiyah! Watch out fossils, Goose is comin' for ya!> The Monferno struck the ground haphazardly all around herself, finally falling into an accidental rhythm that coincided with the sleigh bells.

"What kind of 'Christmas Event' is this...!?" Alicia couldn't help but mutter, a pit of dread in her gut as she scurried about as quickly as she possibly could to make the event whose openings were rapidly disappearing. A ritual circle to bring them to a forbidden place? Dangers at every turn? And an eerie tune she'd have to pay attention too in order to get anything from this!? Where was the snow or the lights or the big tree prop with presents!? Still, she wanted to be a hero in this game, so she couldn't ignore things. Even if she knew she was wildly in over her head here! There was a Zapdos apparently guarding this entire zone which was why they needed the ritual in the first place! Dr. Bunya really was mad, and her Aerodactyl was not afraid to call her on it however subtly! "C-Can we go home? Please?" Tikani squeaked out, quivering. The Chikorita was especially sensitive to the awful feeling this place exuded. But despite her fears she wasn't going to abandon her trainer. But nothing in there said she couldn't plea for mercy. She was larger than most Chikorita, but that did little to assuage the terror. "This is not what I was expecting either, Tikani... I'm sorry for getting us into this mess in my haste. Can I still count on you?" Alicia replied in turn, petting her first team member who she'd rapidly spent of her starting funds to improve. "... Yeah. We're a team." Tikani confirmed. How could she dare to let her trainer down? "You get to digging, quick.""Keep me updated on how you're feeling. I want to bail before you're out of strength." Alicia ordered softly. Scuttling off, she kept an eye out for others. Maybe she'd stumble across someone who was more experienced that might be willing to cover for her here and there. She did, however, doubt she'd see the one person she'd met previously here. He probably had a better head on his shoulders then she did. But that was for another moment, and she picked a spot to start cracking at the earth.
