Jade let out her breath in a whistle. It seemed like her little one-off question had really struck a chord with her new ally Emery V.. "Hoo, boy," she said, brows raised. "You got a real knack for words, you know that?" Her tone wasn't judgmental- just thoughtful.
She wasn't sure how to address the issue of "manmade" versus "natural." Did that mean souls could only be naturally occurring? They couldn't be created? Was something made by people, crafted with intent and purpose, somehow inferior to something spat out by the randomly-generated survival engine of life?
Jade didn't have answers for that. But something about it struck her as sour, like finding out you'd only gotten into vet school because of an admin error.
After a moment, the ninja gave a small laugh, rolling her shoulders. "But I figure you're right. Souls or no souls, we're all here right now, aren't we?" It was the coward's way out, but it wasn't a lie. She'd have to do some thinking before she dredged that one up again.
Ping! The ground dropped out from under them. Jade let out a yelp of surprise before she realized she... hadn't fallen.
Bzzzzzzz...
She was still hovering, wings motoring like tiny engines, now five feet above the others in their growing pit. "Aw, hell," said Jade, trying not to panic as her heart lurched into her throat.
<What are you doing up there? Come down, everyone's waiting!> Her Monferno's voice filtered up from below. The monkey was attempting to climb Jian to wave at Jade with both hands. <Down heeeeere!>
"I see ya, I'm just... just a sec," Jade said, trying to wrap her mind around her new 3D movement controls that hadn't come with an instruction manual. The "mystery gift" popup wasn't helping either- she couldn't exactly give it away when she wasn't even near anyone.
Fortunately, the game seemed to equalize itself. The longer she dawdled, the lower she naturally sunk, until she was down at the same level as everyone else. Her sandals brushed the ground and Jade felt herself land safely, letting out a huff of relief.
<There you are! Look what I found,> said Goose, waving something. Jade squinted, but it was too hard to tell if it was a fossil or just some cursed human remains from the previous level.

Josh gasped at the wat Alicia reacted. "I didn't mean it like--" the Mystery Sift knocked him off his feet, allowing the girl to put some distance between them. "I didn't mean it like that!!" he yelled after he stood up, mounting Granmarg and chasing after her. Surely there was no way she could outrun a Mudsdale, right?
Were Alicia to allow Josh to get a look at her face, he would immediately notice the tears. Sliding off Granmarg so he could get to work looking for a good spot to dig at, the Mystery Gift hooked to the side of the Pokémon's saddle, he approached Alicia, but not uncomfortably close. "That's not what I meant. I'm just worried about you, that's all. If you can handle the danger, then let's make the most of it. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to come off so terse." He continued to ramble empathetically until Granmarg found a new place to dig.
As he pounded away at the ground, his accuracy nowhere as close to as crisp as it was due to his surge of empathy. "All I wanted to do was protect you," he exhaled, at last ceasing his rambling as he got back to work. He wasn't sure he could keep himself safe, either; that strobe light flickering above him made his skin tingle. Just what was up there? It was a weird shaped rock that caught Nero's attention this time, one with some strange, worm like ridges running across it. He wouldn't have paid any attention to it at all if his Electrike hadn't been barking so urgently at it. Clearly the Pokemon recognised this as something valuable, and that was enough to halt Nero from slam his pickax straight through it and destroying it. He picked it up as Electrike eagerly wagged his tail, turning it over in his hand in search of some kind of name tag. It took a bit of maneuvering but he eventually got some words to flash up over the item - Vine Fossil. Alright, a fossil, cool. He didn't recognise the name of that one - maybe it was from a later game he hadn't played - but he knew the concept of fossils in Pokemon games so he could respect the value of this rock.
It was shoved into his temporary inventory with the rest of what he'd found as the memory of the initial instruction pop up came back to him. Something about only taking two items out with you, right? He still didn't know what the little scrap of paper did, but that seemed like the worst find so far, right? And presumably the deeper you got, the better the prizes, so it being the first thing he picked up was probably a sign that it was worthless. Oh well, he'd keep it for now, and maybe someone who recognised these items could help give him some more guidance in the mean time.
He picked the pickax up, but hesitated for a moment as he watched his little partner electric type get back to digging too. He was moving noticeably slower now, still with eager movement but almost as though he was already incredibly tired. "You alright, boy?" he asked, instinctively flicking his eyes up to Saint as the potentially knowledgeable person here. As much as he didn't like to ask for help or wanted to pretend he knew everything already, he was painfully aware that he only had one Pokemon with him here, and if something actually were to happen to it, he'd probably end up whiting out.
Despite his slowness, Electrike yapped confirmation at Nero, though whether he was just disguising his struggles was impossible to know. Nero had no choice but to believe him though, so up the pickax went again, hitting the ground with the next timed beat of the music.

"Neither am I," Josh related, trying to make the clearly mentally anguished girl feel more comfortable. "And really... I'm in the same boat as you, the more I stay here." Their conversation was briefly interrupted by a whinny from Granmarg, his brown body becoming discolored from the corruption. And not in a healthy way, either. He was forced to stomp at half speed to maintain his rhythm from how much the corruption had sapped his energy. "If anything, I overestimated my own ability to protect you."
Josh stepped back to keep Alicia and Granmarg both in his sights as he, too, dug at half speed to match the ground-type's pace. "This place is so harsh. Let's... let's be there for each other, okay? Because... I get the strange feeling we might not be seeing each other for a while after this." Perhaps it was paranoia setting in. Perhaps it was Zapdos looming overhead somewhere, a colossal column of lightning ready to strike him and inflict the damage cap or beyond. Perhaps it would be the cold from the snow falling around him. Except... this was way too warm to be snow.
Was this... ash? Alicia Westfield Josh continues to interact with Alicia Westfield . Granmarg shows signs of sickness from the corruption. Josh feels that the "snow" might actually be ash. Orion would glance back to Nero and Blue again, head on a perpetual swivel as all of the people he wanted to protect continued to disperse and drive his blood pressure higher the lower and lower they dug. This pop up in the UI had been a pain in the ass, but he hadn't wanted to pass the present along to another person for fear of it being some sort of timebomb. Yet as he watched Tuesday pass hers along to Rose, and how powerfully it moved the small child he would take his from the window and squat low to get on her level.
"Merry Christmas Rosie," he'd offer the present to her with one hand and ruffle her hair affectionately with the other. "I'm sorry to hear that Santa is...busy sometimes, but don't worry." A beaming bright smile would cascade across his face as he'd give her a thumbs up. "If he shows up tonight and doesn't say sorry I'll take a dive onto the naughty list and see if I can't get you some present backpay." He would shift his gaze to the catgirl and raise an eyebrow at her, hoping she knew what she knew what she was doing. "Auntie Tuesday and Big Bro Orion have your back no matter what happens, kay?" The words hung as a promise to the small child, and an oath to the catgirl.
"Till then why don't I help you dig yeah? I'll help you move all the dirt and if you find any tough rocks I'll break em for you okay?"
The knot in his stomach grew tighter, something wasn't sitting right with him and it definitely wasn't the pizza he'd eaten before logging in.
...
Meanwhile Achilles was still over with Nero, Laguna, and Roxanne keeping an eye on the situation. At Roxanne's behest he would help her dig for more bones, rifling through the dirt she dredged up with relative ease for any fragments of the past.
"I wonder where all of these bones came from..." The cat would muse aloud to the giant boulder baby. "Something had to have happened here, yeah?"

As the present was gifted away, and the pop-up finally appeared to disappear from Cypress's vision, she would exhale in what seemed like relief before giving a nod of thanks, adjusting the pickaxe in her hand as she glanced down at it.
She should...probably get back to mining, shouldn't she? Best not to shirk work!
Glancing over to where her Fomantis was digging, she would motion for the grass type to bound over - which she did...albeit a bit slower, little sickles covered in loamy dirt as she raised them to Cypress in cheer.
Cypress would lightly pat the little mantis on the head.
"Thanks so much for digging, Mint, I'm really grateful! How about you take a break? I can do some digging for the both of us."
The Fomantis would give an excited nod, though not saying anything as the wolf woman began to swing her pickaxe to the beat, the rhythm, the (still a bit nerve-wracking) bells - all while the Fomantis opted to watch in awe, slightly bouncing with each swing and each hit - getting herself back into the (literal) swing of of the beat and rhythm.

The Noibat floated silently in response to Tikani the Chikorita's shouts in response, tilting its head confused. Why was asking to taste someone offensive? They didn't understand. If some Pokemon made fruit, wouldn't they want to share? Everyone should share fruit.
Of course, as the actual trainer Alicia Westfield held up a hand and spoke, they didn't really understand. "... I didn't ask to eat them. Just if they tasted good. Maybe just, a lick? I like licking fruits, and-"
"Aww sick!" Joy suddenly exclaimed, ripping up a large Armor Fossil from the ground.
"Uh- Gotta go see what's up!" And off the Noibat flew, staying hungry, and only growing weaker by the minute.
As the floor dropped down below, Joy just laughed, landing in the dirt below. She had to admit, this was kind of fun. Not that she cared about anything that anyone else was doing, or heaven forbid, the lore. But getting good loot was bound to be a good time, even if she did have to dig a little bit to some creepy Christmas music.
"They did not have fruit!" The Noibat returned, frowning deeply as it spoke to their trainer, who was suddenly distracted by the Mystery Gift on their UI. Screw that, they weren't gonna hand it away. Why would they? Unless someone gave her a gift back, how the hell would that be fair?
"Aww, that's sad." Nurse Joy said sarcastically. "Stick around for a bit then, maybe we'll dig something up interesting for ya?"
"Maybe. I-" They suddenly paused, slowly fluttering to the ground as Nurse Joy struck to the beat and pulled something up. "I don't feel so good."
"Oh, come on. Pull yourself together." Joy groaned, rolling her eyes. "You can't be that weak, can you? Look at everyone else, they're still kicking. You're not even doing anything, you just pestered me about food."
"S-sorry, sorry, I'll... get back up. Just, give me a minute."

There was more shouting- both joy at fossils and arguments- but it was hard to tell what was going on with the popup in the way. Blackthorne frowned. Santa’s naughty list… What did that mean? Was there even a Santa figure in pokemon? He had no idea-
All he knew was that it was really hard to see, because the box wouldn’t close out.
Blackthorne chewed on his lip, thinking. He could see Domino from where he was, and that was a safe choice, but-
But-
“… Alistair,” He started, trying to infuse his voice with more Blackthorne, and less Sae. “Here. It’s customary this time of year, isn’t it? Maybe you’ll even think a bit more highly of me… Gifts and affection go hand in hand, don’t they?”
Distantly, the pumpkaboo laughed shrilly again.

Presents. This really is some abandoned, forgotten, holiday event, isn't it? But... is it corrupted?Domino looks at the gift in her hands, watching the way a kaleidoscopic array of light is reflected by silver wrapping paper. What to do... what to do... would playing by the rules be a worse outcome than not doing so? Were this not Mistra, she would probably keep her present just to see what would happen... pick the most chaotic option and all that. What will she pick now? "Bean, baby, stop digging for a sec and heal those who might need a hand, yeah? I'm taking this gift to our friend over there."The Dudunsparce, half burrowed into the dark earth by now, YAWNS at Domino's words, looking around with sleepy eyes while the Beta Tester herself approaches Hekate once more. Bean's gaze fixes upon Saint's own little helpful Popplio. L4Iszwya5d12 -50 HP from strain (250/300) "Hey, again. Hope your digging's been going well." She smirks, gift in hand. She offers it to Hekate as if it weren't a big deal at all, dozens of bright colours shining in her eyes. "Here! Dunno what this whole gifting thing might lead to or what's inside these, but I think we're better off not getting on that naughty list, no?"She laughs at that, but honestly, deep down she really hopes she won't regret handing the present to this unsuspecting stranger. As Noibat picked itself up again, Nurse Joy did actually bother to glance a look at them. They did seem rather exhausted and tired. Did they really need food that badly? Or was something in this place simply drawing out the worst and fatiguing them? That certainly wasn't a great sign.
She hummed in thought, finally looking around at all the other Players participating in the event. There was a child crying, a dead tree sprouting in the middle of nowhere, and overall a bit of chaos. It was starting to snow, bootprints simply appearing, and that damn red light in the sky. Maybe she really should have put more thought into this.
This place was damn freaky, and she was starting to not really like it. It was cool as hell, and she loved the mystery. But she didn't really like the idea of not having any Pokémon at all when Santa Claus from Hell descended from the Heavens to murder them all.
What even happened when her Pokémon fainted?
Before she can even really think too heavily on the bigger questions, something caught her eye. A fossil someone ripped up from the earth as their reward caught her gaze immediately. The stone was covered in twirling tentacles, like some primordial eldritch nightmare would spawn from it.
Ripping up the Sail Fossil she just pulled up, briefly glancing at how boring it seemed, she moved to approach Cypress. "Hey," She spoke up, letting the 'ey' sound linger on for a little bit. "I got this, super rare Fossil right here." She spoke, holding up the Sail Fossil. "I'd be happy to trade you for that one," She pointed at the Vine Fossil as she spoke. "If you're interested, of course."
Very shortly after, her Noibat suddenly landed on her shoulder, breathing heavily. "S-so hungry... So tired. Can't, fly. Hurt. The air hurts. Don't like it." It could barely even keep their eyes open, and Nurse Joy immediately frowned in response. "Something in the air. It's coming. Don't like it. So tired. Weak. I hurt all over. Please..."
"Hold on just a sec, lil' dude. The experience will toughen you up. Just..." She internally swore, slamming her pickaxe into the ground just a few more times, hoping to get one last bit of loot before her Pokemon fainted completely. "Just, f-fuck, stay awake. I'll make sure you get all the fruit you want."
"Y'mean it?" Noibat replied exhausted, all before flopping forwards, falling flat onto its face onto the earth.
"Yeah... I guess I did mean it."

"Yes, I'm fine," He reassured Sae'ranis, dropping his hand from the other man's arm as soon as he realized he'd just sort of... gently pulled the other player back toward the rest of the group, including poor Saint who he'd brushed off for the moment.
When Sae slipped back into his character's persona, Alistair fought down a frown. Really, everything was super awkward right now. He should have handled the whole thing better. Of course, Sarthor could have also made an effort not to literally look and move past Alistair to hand Saint a gift. Even if Alistair were the type to not take offense, it would've still been weird as hell. Fortunately for everyone, he wasn't the type to get hurt very easily either. There were already clearly several emotions running high in the larger group of players right now, the last thing he needed was to add to the overall stress beyond being snubbed.
"Do they? He answered glibly, with a twinkle in his eye, as though their awkward out-of-character moment hadn't even happened. "Well then, where I'm from it's traditional to return the favor," The man responded, handing over his own gift as he took Lord Darien Blackthorne's offering. The annoying pop-up finally cleared, and Alistair looked warily around. There was something like ash falling, and then even more eerily...
"Do you all see those prints?" He asked, staring at the compacted earth around Blackthorne with growing dread. "... Saint, right? Stick close to Blackthorne and I." he said, feeling a little bad about dismissing the other player so eagerly earlier. It really, really wasn't his fault. But he couldn't just ignore whatever it was that Sarthor was doing either... "Pidove, will you at least keep an eye on these two?"
<What a reasonable suggestion, for once! Certainly.> Said the pokemon, fluttering closer, and canting her head to look first at the giggling pumpkaboo, and then the cheerful popplio. She seemed satisfied with their wellbeing for the moment, and only settled back down again. Alistair looked at her critically- she was a sturdy pokemon, but he could see the signs of strain starting to show. Whenever she moved, tufts of down or stray feathers scattered from her body. Additionally, she was starting to fluff up as though she were exposed to cold, her wings conversely clamped tight when she wasn't moving around. Rather than leave the excavation to his protective companion, Alistair waited for a solid beat from the eerie, "festive" music, and swung down with his pickaxe.

A tree immediately sprouted from where she struck, sending her scrambling back a foot. It continued to grow and grow until reaching its peak, all while clearly being dead. Conifers didn't lose all their needles at once. They shed their old ones in late summer! This tree had to be dead, but then how was it growing?
She didn't really like the implications of this. Could Mistra make something dead, still grow? What did that mean for the fossils they were digging up?
Laguna would accept Nero's own gift with a smile, trying to stay calm even as she spoke up again to him. "Heaven forbid, most quests aren't like this at all. First of all, we're in the middle of Mistra. And it's a miracle that we're not immediately assaulted by corrupted beings beyond our deepest nightmares. Although-" She'd suddenly point up, noticing the red light blinking overhead. "Maybe that's still to come."
"Remind me to invite you to Ostellia with me sometime, maybe we can do a quest that is actually, uh... Well, not filled with 'magic' and corruption and, I guess evil Santa Claus?"
"The bones probably came from inside of things. Beneath flesh is bone, right?" Roxanne suddenly replied to orioncayge's Achilles, throwing Laguna for a whole loop as she was definitely not following her Pokemon's conversation as well as she should have.
"Uh, Roxanne?"
"Yes, Auntie?"
"Are you feeling ill, sick, anything like that?"
The Onix would have pursed their lips in thought if they had any, the tip of their tail still politely kicking away some small bits of dirt over time. "Quite. This land isn't good for us. If I had any bones, they would be shuddering in anticipation."
Laguna frowned, placing her hand up against the dead tree before nodding her head. "Alright. Just, let me know if it gets too much. I know you'll fight no matter what, but I still want you to be cautious. Don't exert yourself too much."
"Then you, should also not exert yourself too much." The Onix replied, before just turning their head back to Achilles. "Do only flesh have bone in it? I know Rock does not, but I swear I see the shape of bones in those rocks..."
She let out a small sigh of relief, brushing back a bead of sweat that threatened to poor down over her. With a twirl of her Wand of the Winds, a chill breeze washed over her as she picked up her pickaxe again before finally returning back to look at Nero.
And then it began to snow. She certainly didn't do that with her wand, did she? Something felt wrong about it, unnatural in the air. Goosebumps formed across her skin not from the cold, but the silent fear. With a deep frown twisting across her face, she once again struck in time with the music. "The ground will probably fall away again in a bit again. Probably after Bunya goes around and looks at everything again. Be ready!" She spoke, entirely unaware of his difficulties the first time the earth fell away.

#s://i~imgur~com/sMbMhHQ~jpg Emery went rigid for a brief second and began to laugh at Jade Jager 's words, and went even harder at the other's slight cop-out. Not that she minded in the least; she was here to play a game, not to win a debate. She waved some dust away, eyes dancing. "We sure are, Ms Dragonfly. For all I know, you could just be a particularly realistic NP-"
The rest of her sentence was whisked away by the groggy air, replaced with a girlish screech, as terra firma ceased to exist whilst they were still standing on it. Emery scrabbled at nothing in a panic and still ended up on her ass. Idol had swooshed up into the air and accompanied her on the short fall, attempting to prevent any clods from puffing up in her face. She was still dazed for a good while, squinching her eyes.
When Jade's monkey started yelling upwards, Emery flitted back into herself.
"Argh..." She rubbed the base of her spine, glad she hadn't landed on the pickaxe's pointy end. She coughed, noticing that Jian was close by and Jade was decidedly not. A squint up told her that yes, those wings were in fact functional, not just cosmetic.
"Are you alright, Viv?!"
"No, but it doesn't matter," grumbled Emery, struggling to her feet on uneven ground. "Though maybe I should be asking you. You look awfully pale, Idol. Is it the" - she waved her hands around - "miasma, this corruption thing about this place?"
The blue seal was indeed looking under the weather; just swimming in the air seemed to be taking a toll on him, with the way his tiny chest was heaving and how the tips of his flippers and tail were lightly crisping like he had a bad case of fin rot.
"Nothing gets by you, does it?" Idol settled onto her shoulder, slumping with his nose next to her cheek. "I can hang on for a bit longer, but oh golly gosh Viv, I think I'm starting to feel the call of the moon's own ocean...it glitters so brightly...and the wind feels so fresh..."
"Hey now, don't go swimming towards the light on me." Emery put a bracing hand atop Idol's head. She glanced around and saw people gradually continuing to dig. Now that made sense to her. "We've still gotta make this worth. I'll treat you something nice after this, alright?"
She felt his head bob slowly up and down, moving her hair, and then got to work. It wasn't long until the tactile feedback from the pickaxe got strange again, and Emery hurriedly stooped down to pluck something from the dubious dirt.
[Fossil2]i_QduJ5w1d15 Before she could investigate properly, a popup blipped onto her field of view. A quick skim and her eye twitched in amusement. Presents? Another gimmick, was it? Digital hot potato with the threat of a naughty list hanging above her head - well, that sounded very interesting. And right there, next to her feet, was an unobtrusive, yet frighteningly festive giftbox.
Ah, what the hell. How bad can it be? Why do I care that half my view is obscured? I can still see just fine if I tilt a bit.
She toed the present closer so that it sat between her feet and got to examining what she'd dug up, turning her head in what would look a very strange manner to onlookers.

#s://i~imgur~com/C6ElfZM~jpeg Yanyan's surprised yowl was all Jian had in terms of a warning as the ground suddenly gave way under all of them. He landed awkwardly on and on his front, getting a face full of grit while he was at it. He felt a full body chill run through his entire body as he tried to shake off the thought that he was landing in dead people ashes. Eugh. He's going to need a proper bath after this. Yanyan, albeit a little tilted, still managed to land on his feet just fine.
He made a face as he pushed himself to his feet, rubbing the dirt and dust off his body. He nearly toppled over again thought when Jade Jager 's Monferno began clambering up his side to get Jade to come down.
"Must be nice to have actual functioning wings!" If Jian knew that the wings would actually work, he would've chosen to have some too back during character creation. In the meantime, he squinted at the sudden pop-up in front of him talking about some sort of present or other.
Santa's naughty list, huh? Now that wasn't ominous at all.
Yanyan prodded warily at the present, sniffing the air but getting nothing but the smell of soot, which was increasingly starting to clog his throat from the way he was coughing. And cat coughing was never a nice sound to hear, pokemon or not.
"Alright, uh, here, Jade, was it? Since they need us to pass on these presents, I could just exchange with you." Jian said as he picked up the uncomfortably festive looking box and held it up to Jade as soon as she makes a landing. "I could just take yours off your hand too if you don't wanna end up on Santa's naughty list or whatever. Honestly, kinda hating the sound of that." The man chuckled uncomfortably as the Monferno finally clambered off him.
"You still holding up there, Yanyan?"
"Yeah, I guess. My nose feels so gross right now." The litten replied, some of his sarcasm surprisingly watered down. He hopped onto Jian's shoulder again to get away from the ashes that began to fly as the digging continued.

”Oh yeah… you’re not that much farther along, huh?” Alicia mused as Josh did his best to comfort her. It was not the kind of thing she expected to be reminded of. But he did say he realized he shouldn’t be here either. And then she had the presence of mind to look over and see Granmarg. A subtle terror set in seeing the sturdy horse so worn down, looking as if he was literally becoming sick from how wicked this zone was. She couldn’t help herself, she looked over to her own Pokemon. ”Tikani?”“I’m… hanging in there.” Tikani muttered at the concern of her trainer. Try as she might to put a brave face on it was obvious the corruption was eating away at her in similar fashion. Her leaf even looked to be wilting little by little by the second. “Would appreciate getting out of here soon though.”“At least we should only have one more layer to go through if what I read recently is right.” Alicia tried her best to reassure the Chikorita. To hell with losing the loot. If it came down to it she was going to bail before her partner succumbed. “It’s a long shot in these conditions, but maybe some Synthesis?”“Heh… what do you think I’ve been doing?” Tikani retorted with a bit of sarcasm, and Alicia grimaced as her fear was confirmed. With Synthesis limited, Tikani couldn’t sustain herself completely through this miasma of evil. She then refocused on Josh, a panic alighting in her eyes as he shared his ominous feeling with her. “No! Don’t start with that nonsense! It’ll be fine and we’re both going to make it through this and, and…!” ‘And what?’ a traitorous part of her asked sarcastically. What could she do at this juncture to help him right now? She’d focused more on the defensive aspects of the Tank tree, but nothing regarding the supportive side. Now Alicia herself was wilting a bit as her own attempt to be reassuring surely fell flat. The boot prints were rather concerning, but she was more focused on Josh’s words right now, so she didn’t pay much heed to them beyond moving to put some distance between her and them. What could she do…? Was there anything she could do besides mindlessly mine away?
