What a rough morning that was. He had his butt kicked by a Duraludon out at the Surge Steppes, leaving Raiden in awful shape. Granmarg's gallop felt a little unnatural as he rode toward the Firewater Saloon; he needed a break, too. The two trusted one another enough that he did not feel the need to tie the horse to a stake; he would let the Mudsdale relax and wander the area outside the Western bar.
Stepping inside, Ares the Charmander in his arms, the wanderer looked around and saw the place was busy. There seemed to be a card game going on, too. "Afternoon," he walked up to the bar and set Area down in one of the stools, though he did not sit down himself. "Tall glass of water and a medium-well steakburger, please." He didn't expect that the place would serve drinks other than water and alcohol. As they said in the real world, don't drink and drive. Or in UNOVR, don't drink and ride. "Hey, what's the buy-in for the card game?" he asked.
"It's actually part of our loyalty program," the bartender answered. "You accumulate Bits with every purchase, and that's what your chips are made of. They won't let people buy into the game with Bytes. Something about it being against the Terms of Service." Josh couldn't help but chuckle as he put in and paid for his order. Taking his first big gulp of water, it cooled his parched throat. It never felt so refreshing.
"Hey, Ares, you thirsty, too?" he asked the fire-type.
"A little! Just be careful with it, and don't miss my mouth!" the snippy Charmander answered. He carefully lifted the glass and poured some of the water into the lizard's open mouth. While water was a skin irritant for fire-type PokĂŠmon like Charmander, many species still needed to drink some water for their bodies to function. Alicia Westfield

âWhy in the world am I going here?â Alicia mentally asked herself as she approached the Firewater Saloon. This was the kind of place that would be swarming with people. People that she had trouble speaking with. People that might now take notice because of how she made her avatar and oh God she did not think this through! âSteady.â Tikani said soothingly from Aliciaâs shoulder. The Chikorita seemed to rapidly figure out what her trainer was really like. A reassuring pat to the back of her head came from the dinosaurâs leaf ornament. âI am steady!â Alicia protested quietly. âYouâre shaking in your boots. Thatâs the farthest thing from steady I can think of.â Tikani countered softly. âBreathe, okay?âShe couldnât fault her starterâs advice, so she took a deep breath to settle herself as she quietly stepped into the saloon. Gently pushing the door in almost slow motion, holding it to control itâs return to neutral so it caused as little noise as possible. Not the best start for someone who was trying to break out of her shell and live a life as some grandiose hero figure. But⌠baby steps, she figured. Rome wasnât built in a day and all. And then she noticed the card game going on, quirking an eyebrow. While sheâd never really gotten a chance to play, it was an avenue sheâd considered previously to try and have something to break the ice with, so sheâd learned the rules where she could. Though she would probably be prudent to confirm what the set up was so she didnât get herself into a bad situation by assuming she knew and end up being surprised. There were a few different poker versions after all. Fortunately, it would be simple enough to approach the bar. âHello, I just need some water myself. Was stopping by on my way elsewhere.â the Gardener said simply to explain herself. âCan you make it two?â Tikani chimed in. â⌠Two glasses actually.â Alicia corrected herself, not sure if an NPC would be able to hear her partner speaking. There was that blond with a Charmander nearby though. âJosh Devlinâ if she was getting the information from her interface correctly. âYou know⌠you have to start somewhere.â Her Chikorita commented. âI will!â Alicia hissed quietly, feeling her heart lock up on her again. â⌠In a momentâŚ!âTikani gave her what was likely going to quickly become a signature âI donât believe youâ look. Then she extended a vine from one of the âbeadsâ around her neck and reached over to poke Josh on the shoulder, chiming with a âYoohoo!ââWhat are you doing!?â Alicia yelped in a panic. âGetting you introduced.â Tikani said simply. Not for the first time, Alicia realized she just might have failed to think things all the way through. Josh Devlin

Josh's PokĂŠSpeech settings were not universal. Not wanting to hear conversations between other trainers and their PokĂŠmon for the time being, he could not hear Tikani's words; he could only hear chirping and PokĂŠmon cries from the grass-type. Ares relaxed his tail, he and Josh assuming the building itself had been hard-coded to be warded against damage up to a certain threshold.
All he could hear was Alicia's loud yelp that carried into his ear a bit too well, causing him to flinch and knock over his stack of chips as Tikani tapped his shoulder with one of her vines. Thankfully, he had saved his glass of water just in time, some of it sloshing onto the table. Nothing a towel couldn't fix.
"Mind keeping that Chikorita of yours under control better, Alicia?" Josh snapped, glad her name was being broadcast. He had ran into too many players in the Arena that had made their names less convenient to find. "That, and using your inside voice would help." He paused, Ares a little on edge at first but warming up to Tikani. She was a bold one. Maybe he'd have a new friend if their trainers got along.
"To answer your question, there's a card game starting once there's eight of us. Name of the game's Hold'em. Popular down south."

âThis is your fault.â Alicia immediately snarled out as quietly as she could to her partner when Josh, understandably, spooked as badly as he did. âYouâre the one who raised her voice.â Tikani pointed out. The Chikorita grinned as her trainer silently fumed at the point. In Aliciaâs opinion she wouldnât have had reason to if the leafy Pokemon had just given her a moment to work through her issues at her own pace. As if reading her trainerâs mind, the Chikorita gave an exasperated sigh afterwards and left Alicia to it. âSorry, I wasnât aware Tikani was the type to just randomly bug people. We just recently got out of the possibly-mad professorâs lab. Still getting used to what sheâs like.â the pink-haired woman answered, making a motion to place a palm on her face in embarrassment over the matter. âYou were looking to speak up. Itâs not random if Iâm helping.â the Chikorita interjected, even though they both noticed that Joshâ pokespeech setting was either off or restricted. It was something Alicia had seen but not considered given how easy it was for her to tune things out on her own. Once they got their own glasses, Tikani happily grabbed the additional one with her vines and brought it up. âYou sure you got that?â Alicia asked of her partner, instinctively holding a hand up to help support the possibly precariously held glass. âYep.â The little one assured, pointedly ignoring the little slip that implied the glass wouldnât have stayed if Aliciaâs hand wasnât there. The newcomer sighed. How did she get this kind of partner again? The species was obvious, but the other aspects⌠âWell⌠I donât have much to my name, having just started and all, but may I take a seat if youâre still waiting?â Alicia asked after a quick moment to clarify the buy-in aspect with the bartender that Josh had just recently inquired about. She hadnât been there in time to overhear it after all. Josh Devlin

"So you're not the only one who thought that Dr. Bunya was a bit off her rocker," Josh whispered, not wanting to make a scene about the Professor's... eccentricities. "Ares was like that too," the blonde raised his voice to indoor talking levels before turning his PokĂŠSpeech setting off temporarily. He didn't want to hear any table talk from the Charmander, nor did he want distractions.
"Sure, sit down! Looks like there's gonna be six of us total," Josh replied as he took a sip of his water after biting into his patty. "Food here's good. I'll have to remember this place. Hopefully the game's just as good." Sliding his meager stack of chips onto the table, he introduced himself after snap-folding the first hand away. "Name's Josh, and I'm an aspiring PokĂŠmon racer. Would love to make organized racing a thing in the Briarbane area. But that's a ways away. Gotta make a name for myself in other ways first. What about you?" he asked, the Charmander making small talk with her PokĂŠmon.
As the duos got to know each other, especially with Josh being card dead for several orbits, his stack slowly dwindled, eaten by the blinds. Around a half hour into the session, he finally got a hand he was willing to play with... though it was out of line. Impatience may have gotten the better of him. "Raise," he said as he slid a stack of white chips forward. Alicia Westfield

Alicia nodded as she took a seat, sipping her own glass. Her own stack was fairly meager as well, she only had two glasses worth of âloyaltyâ to spend on a buy in. She liked her first hand enough to see the flop for minimal cost, but immediately mucked them afterwards. But the beginning of the game saw a small âtransformationâ come over her almost. It was as if stone had settled on her face, her lips held in a neutral and thin line. Only the movement of her eyes and her voice indicated she was still alive. âIâll keep the recommendation in mind. I imagine Iâll come back here more than a few times. Depends on how lucky I get nearby.âAliciaâs second hand, however, she was more involved in. She had actually played it well enough that the two players that went against her in the turn ended up folding their cards away, letting her make up the first hand with a few more whites than she started with. Despite it technically not being required, she did show her cards enough to show she had a pair, though it was quite small. A few curses followed as one other player realized heâd been bluffed into folding. âWell, Iâm Alicia, as you saw on my tag. And⌠my own reasoning is more nebulous. I was entranced by the idea of possibly getting to be a real hero. Not to say I donât have other reasons, but I hope you understand if I keep them to myself. Theyâre⌠much more personal and UNOVRâs an escape for me.âAfter checking her own hand, she looked along the table as players took their turns. A couple folded, but one other checked. He, Alicia suspected, would go out shortly after. Especially after the odd move Josh just made. She stared at him impassively as she ran the numbers in her head. âIâll call that.â She decided shortly after, liking her hand and the cards sheâd already seen enough to see the flop at the price Josh set. The last person mucked his cards and it was the Racer and the Hero Wannabe going heads up. Josh Devlin

A loud snort from Josh's Mudsdale momentarily distracted him before giving the female his full attention. "It's kind of an escape for me too. I just came off of a position where I had to deal with idiots every day. Believe me, it was no fun working a position where you get called a liar at least once a day." While government work was secure, it was frustrating working chats for the state lottery. He loved his new position, never having to interact with customers in real time. "Plus, there's no place to ride horseback where I'm from. I've already gotten the chance to here." He gestured toward Granmarg, who was peeking inside from the window. "Say hi to Granmarg!"
All of a sudden, Alicia had put on a hell of a poker face. Still as a statue, the most neutral facial expression imaginable. His eyes widened as the flop came. All Broadway cards, including a pair. And he had bricked it. "...What are you doing, dealer..." he muttered under his breath as he was first to act. While the pot wasn't huge, it had the potential to balloon as one of them made a move.
Josh tapped his knuckles against the table, seemingly afraid to commit. Was he afraid to make a move with his meager cards, or was he trying to induce a bet and put out a clever trap? Such was the nature of poker; it wasn't about what cards you got. It was about what you did with them. Alicia Westfield

The snort of the sizable Ground type made Alicia glance over to where Granmarg was at the moment. She gave the horse a quick smile and a wave of her hand before settling back into her poker face and returning to the game. âAh⌠I can only imagine how hard that was. Things like that are why I work fully remote. People are⌠hard. Computers are much easier to understand most days.âThen she blinked in surprise as she heard that Josh used UNOVR to ride on the backs of large enough Pokemon like Granmarg. Idly, she looked over to where Ares and Tikani were chatting with each other, the two seeming to be getting along quite well. And then she remembered what Chikorita evolved into, as well as the fact that her current class seemed to have a magnifying effect on the Grass Typeâs size. â⌠You know, Iâd yet to consider that thatâs a thing. But with things like the mounts in Legends Arceus, it really shouldâve come to mind before handâŚâThe flop came, and Alicia had more numbers to run, along with factoring in Joshâs attempt to see the turn for free. It could be an attempt to slow-play a good hand, but she felt he wouldâve made an even smaller bet pre-flop if he was intending to slow play from the beginning. And there was the way his eyes gave him away. He most likely did not like the cards that came up. So she put a hand on two smaller stacks of chips that she had, threading them together in calculated motion of her hand and fussing with them, letting the rhythmic clicking of each chip hitting the one beneath fill the air around the table. She wasnât exactly happy with the cards herself. But she was better at hiding it. So she decided to follow the reversal of his play so far. He had been slightly aggressive, she followed passively. Now he sucked back into passiveness and she chose to go on the attack. âRaise.â Alicia declared, tossing just over a third of her remaining chips into the pot. It was a decently steep cost that Josh would have to call at minimum if he wanted to see the turn now. It was a sizable enough bet that it might raise questions on if she was holding a rather worrying hand. A particularly large two pair, or maybe even a triple were both possible. On the outside she might even already have the full house. And with few if any emotional tells available for Josh to read, all he had to go on was the size of the bet, Aliciaâs call pre-flop, and the obviously deliberate motion sheâd done before her current bet. Did she have it? Or did she smell blood and was trying to scare him out? Josh Devlin

"No, I worked fully remote then, too," Josh clarified. "Have been since the days they had to board my entire city up for months at a time about four years ago." Little did he know how much that might resonate with her, given that both their players were from the same municipality. "Thankfully it was only over the phone and over chat. I couldn't handle in-person work like that. It was nice being able to roll your eyes at abusive customers." Read: customers that did not realize that the words "Each game is played separately" means. No, having ten matching numbers across both games didn't make you a millionaire. They had to be on the same game.
The bet -- not raise -- was frightening. What kind of hand would Alicia have that would elicit an overbet to the pot? This kind of board, paired and with so many Broadway cards, was suspicious. Her story didn't make sense. The most common hands that would call a preflop raise would be strong aces or middle pairs. Holding removal to several of those combinations, Josh really turned up the heat and put her to the test. "Can I get a count, please?"
Once he had his answer, he spent another minute in the tank, considering what she could possibly have. In his mind, this looked like an effort to buy the pot. With Josh having a larger stack, he felt he could afford to be a bit loose with the pursestrings. Cupping his hands behind his stack, he pushed it forward slightly, announcing "All in" with a cold voice before burying his face in his hands. Alicia Westfield

âYou too?â Alicia asked in shock over the local city being boarded up. âIt wasnât as big a deal for me, I⌠donât really go anywhere so being told to stay at home was just More Of The Same. But it made getting groceries and amenities an absolute pain. Hoarders going insane and probably screaming âitâs the end of the worldâ and everything.ââAnd donât remind me. It feels like nobody trusts the computer expert to actually know their stuff when it comes to computers⌠Boy do I have some horror stories saved of idiots being idiotsâŚâ Alicoa added in commiseration regarding awful customers. Which might be alarming if Josh could connect the dots between how a background in computers could benefit poker capability. She did mentally grimace as she realized her own mistaken terminology, but nobody else actively commented on it so she was happy to not bring it up herself. It wasnât like it changed what she actually did and meant, and this was a casual game. She imagined at a big and prestigious event she wouldâve been eviscerated metaphorically for it. She did quirk an eyebrow in curiosity over the chip count request, but obviously obliged and gave him the answer to his question. Did she misread his post flop reactions? She would hardly call herself even experienced at the matter, as this was her first actual game even if she learned about and watched plays of the game. It never really translated well in the end. And then Josh shoved his remaining chips forward into the pot. âAlright, letâs go.â She replied in surprisingly short order, following suit. The All-In call was alarming though. Her attempt to either make him commit more resources to the pot or scare him off seemed to work a little too well. For the briefest of moments she wondered if sheâd been masterfully played and walked into a confrontation she couldnât win. But then she thought that if he was that good, logically he would have a side hustle for actual money of respectable value, and not bother with a cheap game with the digital equivalent of board game money. So even if she was wrong, it would be a learning experience. With both players declaring, by word or action, to be completely invested in the pot right now all that was left was to reveal their cards, decide the number of runs, and let Lady Luck decide. But neither side was likely to be happy with the cards their opponent showed. Josh Devlin

"It's that way no matter where you go," Josh added, having been in support for a while. He loved making people happy and leaving the vast majority of his interactions with smiles on their faces. Smiles showed even through voice. "People that think they know more than you do." That was why he loved working for McInnes Forestry. If you had the funds to blow on a landscaping project, you were probably a pretty smart cookie.
"Come on, fold, fold, fold..." was all that went through Josh's mind, keeping his unflinching hands in front of his face. His heart sank when he heard his all-in called. The dealer asked how many times they wanted to run the last two streets. Uncovering his face, he sighed. "Let's run it once..." he trailed off before both of them flipped their cards over. The wannabe cowboy was dominated, drawing to three outs... until the turn came, putting three-of-a-kind in the center. An Ace to follow it gave both of them the exact same hand, splitting the blinds between the two.
The rest of the table looked awestruck at seeing the unlikely event. "Wow, did I ever get lucky..." he exhaled, and he knew it, too. He would only get involved in one more hand where his top pair would hold before the deck ran cold, giving him a chance to keep eating.

âYou know, the odds of those two specific cards appearing on the turn and river were absurdly low.â Alicia noted with an amused chuckle at the pot was divided up again. A whole lot of nothing happened as a result. âI thought for sure I was taking that pot one way or another.âShe had her own moments of drawing dead hands for a while, so she was fairly passive for the remainder of the deck. Maybe a limp in here or there to see what she could get. But nothing worked out after the chopped pot. âSo⌠howâd you get into this series in the first place?â Alicia asked curiously once she got an order for a meal squared away herself. It seemed an easy enough question. They were both here on UNOVR now, but that didnât mean their entries into Pokemon proper were similar. Comparing and contrasting was a viable concept to go on, right? The only reason she didnât outright say the word as a a clarifier for the series was the fact that she wasnât sure how some of the NPCs around would react. If at all⌠it occurred to her immediately after that they might be programmed to not notice to such a thing. Oh well, she doubted there would be any real confusion on Joshâs part. ⌠She hoped. "It's more the third ten hitting the board that was crazy," Josh corrected. "Sorry for the suck out; I know how frustrating it is to get counterfeited. But that's poker."
As the young man remained card dead for several orbits, the blinds eating at his stack, he was able to finish his meal while chatting back and forth with Alicia. "It's mostly a coincidence. Have you heard of EarthBound? Old, old RPG. Older than me. Set in modern times, about three boys and a girl trying to repel an invasion. Psychic powers, baseball bats, frying pans for weapons, and a... unique style of humor." It was a game that didn't sell well, only to grow in popularity well after it left production. Even after digital releases, original game cartridges sold for hundreds of dollars online.

âFair enough. Thatâs what led to it being more likely to be a split pot.â Alicia agreed, humming. âAnd itâs fine. The probability existed, however slight, so itâs only a bit annoying rather then out right frustrating. Less frustrating then remotely chasing down a bug, let me tell you...â
Though she did furrow her eyebrows, shaking her head. âNo, actually. Never heard of it. Sounds like it was on a system that was out of circulation for a while before I actually picked up video games myself. It sounds like an⌠acquired taste, if Iâm being honest.â
⌠Maybe sheâd chase it down at some point and see what it was all about. Not legitimately admittedly, cult classics like that were notorious for becoming stupid expensive on resale. While she could probably afford it, with maybe a little help from her estranged but well meaning mother, why bother when the game was old enough that the original developers likely werenât going to care? They either didnât exist as a company anymore, or had lasted long enough that they had more modern titles to tend to. Or some combination of the two, that was always an option.
âWell⌠âcoincidenceâ is technically the right word on my end too. Combination of my mother needing something to keep me entertained because she felt bad, and hoping that the trading aspects would inspire certain interactions. Unfortunately it back-fired on the second half. And then the first half also back-fired a couple gens later. If Iâm being honest, without the side games I wouldnât be on UNOVR. Mainline just⌠doesnât do anything to keep me engaged, even on the competitive side. Itâs all just too easy when you know the math. So if they were the only offerings the series, I would have no interest. Iâd probably import designs I liked as badly made OCs for other unrelated things. Please Do Not Steal.â Alicia couldnât help but snicker at adding in the trademark line that people who made low-effort creations put as if theyâd actually made something worth stealing.

"You're not wrong," Josh answered. The game was certainly... unique, its second half balanced around a strange mechanic where characters did not fall in battle until the wheel depicting their HP ticked down to zero; even if they took a lethal attack, if they were healed or the battle ended before that wheel reached zero, they survived.
The side games were hit-or-miss for Josh. "Some of them are... really good. Others, not so much. Which ones have you played? Maybe we can netplay one of these days." Though the games were no longer being updated due to being on an outdated console, netplay services were still up and running. And even if they weren't, there were... unofficial third-party workarounds.
Continuing to be card dead, Josh sighed. "When is Nintendo going to make a PokĂŠmon racing spinoff done right? If they don't, I might have to make one myself. Within UNOVR." Of course, he would need to have the PokĂŠmon to do that first.
