"eh?" Vern stared doubtfully at Dr. Bunya for a moment until her words settled in. Realization then struck like lightning and his nerves did not took it well. The sudden popping of many tutorial prompts in front his eyes provided some brief distraction while he walked along the path outside the lab. He tried to read them out loud, but his focus kept shifting back to Dr. Bunya's words and couldn't push himself to even finish a paragraph.
AHHHHH!! What the FUCK does she mean by illegal! Vern kicked some rocks on the way but briefly remembering what kind of creatures lived nearby he held himself back. He moved all tabs aside to open the STORAGE BOX and check on Litten, now safely kept on his pokeball but whatever plans Vern had to take it with him at all times like if they were Ash and Pikachu was thrown to the garbage.
This was a frustrating first experience.
Unless he could get something in return too, this couldn't be just an unwarranted punishment, could it?
Yeah, looking at situation that way maybe it is a rare event that may unlock hidden things for me. Vern grinned, his mood was slightly uplifted but didn't want to give himself false expectations so he made sure to not be too thrilled about non-existent dynamic events.
"Well, let's just get going... Although where was I going?" He repeatedly muttered "What was I doing?" while reading through the TUTORIAL MODE window.
The first tutorial mission given involved visiting the MOM NPC to get the running house, so Hydance bothered adding that? Nice little homage to the franchise but Vern didn't feel comfortable having to deal with another mom, he couldn't let himself put the finger on why was that.
Well, it's just gonna be a quick visit for the shoes, He frowned. Why would the player need an NPC mom though? Why cap mobility with running shoes too? Haven't we gone past that? Seems too old fashioned if you ask me. But as he selected the mission, this was denied by another tinier window prompt that did not spell good-fortune.
In fact it only spread indescribable dread.
Vern read it out-loud as to be sure he did not miss a bit of it. ""You need another player to go on this mission." What!? Why!? Why the fuck Hydance!" Not a warm welcome at all.

After a couple of close calls, and even a white-out or two, Josh felt the need to return home and check in with his MOM. Even though he already had his RUNNING SHOES, he might have to sit through the scenes again, if only because there was another person outside his house. A different one, too. It made sense; with how expansive and endless the upstairs hallway was the first time he was up there, it seemed that this was MOM's house for every player on the server.
Vern might hear the clopping of a Mudsdale's hooves approaching from behind. Were he to look back, he would see a young adult on the back of the ground-type Pokémon, guiding his steed to a stop not far from the door. He slid off his mount and was about to open the door to his parent's humble abode when a particularly unexpected sound effect replaced the naughty word he would have heard from Vern. Not expecting to hear the sound of Mario hitting his head in a certain timeless 3D platformer, he laughed for a second or two before facing Vern. "You okay?" Josh asked, trying to break the ice.

Vern had been very attentive of his surroundings, that until he grew too immersed reading the many prompt windows popping up ever since he left the lab. The tutorial one was quite upsetting due to the requirements, but as someone caught him off-guard asking him if he was doing okay, he cooled off.
Well, that's embarrassing. He faced at the source and saw a blonde accompanied by a Mudsale. How he did not see that coming? "Uhm, yeah I am fine." His words came out too shyly to be properly heard but Vern didn't correct himself and hurried forward to avoid more potential embarrassment.
And forgetting where he was for a quick second, he barged into a stranger's house. Wait... did I just intruded into someone else's house? Of course he did, his barely expressive face did not show but in the fear he started sweating cold.
"Oh! Welcome back, sweetie~" A honey-like voice -in how sweet it sounded- came from the living-room startling the already jumpy Vern. Oh, she's mistaken me for someone. Was what Vern thought. "Sorry ma'am, I am-" Then a sudden prompt window cut off Vern's excuse, and at the sudden pause the woman took opportunity to speak. "My son! Who else would you be? Hehe"
And Vern just realized where he was at, and after reading the prompt describing the NPC talking to him, didn't know whether to be relived or cringing. Why a Mom NPC for the player Hydance? Why? Josh Devlin

Josh paused to turn up his speech volume after being unable to understand Vern . "I'm sorry, come again?" he asked after making the adjustment. Regardless of the response he got, he flinched as soon as his MOM started speaking, turning the volume back down as quickly as he could.
"Welcome home, Josh!" MOM greeted him. "I can't wait to see all the new Pokémon you've brought back!"
He had caught quite a few since then. "How about I meet you in the back yard?" Josh answered, passing through the living room and the kitchen. There was a back entrance to a small patio with bar-style tables and an umbrella. It seemed she were preparing to have guests over. She was one of eight siblings, after all.
"Okay, but let me finish dusting the living room first. I'm almost done!" With that, she got to spraying the last piece of furniture with polish, the end table shimmering and shining when she was done.

Vern had properly read through the entire NPC description while MOM shifted her focus to the other player. She had a quite the bubbly mom of family comedy personality, or that he believed at the first glance of her mannerisms, but Vern was still quite shy to talk to her, he felt awful just having an in-game mother... for some reason.
But nevermind, it's just a game, a game, just play pretend, you have done that as a child haven't you? "Yeah, I've done that." He whispered to himself. So ahead Vern went, to ask her about the shoes. "Ahem. Excuse me, ma'a- ma... do you know where are the- my running shoes?" He inquired without a worry, but at those words MOM had an abrupt halt in whatever was she doing that Vern wasn't paying attention (even the BGM that was unknowingly playing in the background stopped) she looked at him and, comparatively slowly to before, she walked up to him with a somber expression that shook Vern.
Crap, what did I say that triggered that reaction? Through his frozen-stiff expression his anxiety didn't show, but clearly he was wanting to back off when suddenly MOM placed a hand to his shoulders and began talking under a heavy tone. "I knew, always knew from the moment I had you, once you grew of age you would one day be setting towards a very, very long and perilous journey." So is this her "giving me the shoes" dialogue? "In fact, we prepared for it beforehand, me and your father, sadly he couldn't make it through in the end to see this day and bid you farewell, but oh how so proud would he be of you if he saw the great man you have now become my sweet child." Well, that stung a bit Hydance.
But enough of sorrow! Her expression suddenly lit up as she talked with that strong inspirational flair to her voice, even her eyes were glittering dramatically (And the BGM came back from the realm of silence). MOM didn't raise a quitter and your father wasn't nailed at a cross so that we would keep drowning in our grievances!! Nailed at a CROSS?! What?! A fiery aura seemed to surround MOM in all true anime fashion as she so fervently grabbed Vern's shoulders and say. "So go ahead my precious child! Set forth on your wondrous adventure! Make mommy proud! But above everything else, make yourself proud!!" Is this how Hydance motivates their new players? His face was the encapsulation of astonishment as his body arched backwards with how much MOM was closing on him every time she talked- practically screamed, till she finally got overwhelmed in emotion and took him between teary eyes in a really thigh hug.
Forgetting about the running shoes now he felt like running himself from the thigh mother's embrace-grappling, and so he looked at the player who came along with him, Vern's eyes displaying as much begging as Måneskin.

Thankfully for Josh, he already had his pair of RUNNING SHOES; he had just returned to check on MOM and show her some of his new Pokémon. After all, she loved to see new Pokémon! He couldn't wait to see the look on her face when he came back after hatching his first Legendary egg. "Alright, I'm ready! See you outside!" the older female called back, the two going their own ways to the back yard.
He showed the lady his Liepard, Zebstrike, and Mudsdale, each of which wore a saddle. "You're well-traveled already, aren't you?" MOM asked Josh. "I'm so proud of you? I just have one question of you, though."
"And what's that?" Josh asked back.
"Isn't your Liepard a little small for a saddle like that?"
Josh stood next to Luna and gave the big cat a gentle scratch behind the ear before squatting down to the height one would be at with proper riding posture. Even in that pose, he was taller than the Liepard at back level. "She is, but I'm working on it. I'm going to buy a Huge Seal from the Arena to make her as big as Granmarg." He paused to pet the dark-type one more time before walking to be next to his Zebstrika. "Wanna saddle up and go for a ride around town?"
MOM laughed at the suggestion. "You know I'm growing a bit too old for that! Especially if you go as fast as I know you will, you speed racer!"

"Ugh, finally free." Vern took a moment to gather breath and some calm after MOM so brazenly hugged him. With her out of the way thanks to the other player (he would make sure to thank him) he would then go to his supposed room upstairs where he gambled the running shoes would be.
Is hard to gauge how faithful to the mainline games is UNOVR since he's coming in blindly without any foreknowledge beyond what's mostly been echoed out by the players on social media. "Gotcha" Thankfully his assumptions payed out, as he found the running shoes inside a closet in the room. Thinking about it now, there weren't any halls to doors leading to other rooms as he would have assumed to be since this is supposed to be the "previous" collective home of all the UNOVR players, but it would make sense that is just instant access to your own room from the stairs.
"Also, turquoise?" Leaving aside the odd color choice, he put on the shoes in an oddly realistic process (perhaps there was an equip button he missed) and was about to leave, but he hadn't spend even half a minute in the room. This room looks kind of comfy. Wooden rectangle with just enough length, width and depth to be called a room, the classic bed on the corner (where else would it be?) and the TV with the console. A room like this though minimalist, felt all the more pleasant to live in.
"Better be going." He left in a hurry, now with the shoes he felt like running a marathon and almost fell down the stairs upon a misstep given in his excitement. The world was his oyster now that he could run around freely and had his pokemon with him- oh right, he is illegal, well there's time to figure that out latter, Vern felt like doing much more exploring alone than anything, but first he had to be a responsible kid and give his goodbyes to his mother.
But she's not my mom. Still. "I still would feel bad." Like the good kid he is, he walked around the house looking for MOM until he went to the backyard stumbled across the sigh to her and the other player, with the latter showing off his evolved pokemon who all wore saddles. "Wait... you can mount them?" He blurted that out almost a bit outloud to his immediate regret and quite possibly he now had to do more social interaction, lucky boy. Josh Devlin

Once Vern was back outdoors in his RUNNING SHOES, he seemed to be surprised at Josh's revelation. "Yep!" he chirped back. "That's one of the reasons I started UNOVR in the first place!" He took a screencap of Raiden while he was right next to the electric-type.
"It might be different on your UI, but I have this little button with a silhouette of a person sitting on a Rapidash. If you're eligible to ride the Pokémon, it'll light up, and you can climb up to its saddle." He walked back toward Luna ace rubbed her back gently, placing his hand between the saddle and the fur beneath it to give it a gentle rub, too. "If you're not eligible to ride the Pokémon, it will show up gray. Even though she has a saddle on her, I can't ride her because she's too small for me. Once I go to the Identity Parlor to change my avatar to be smaller, or go to the Arena Shop and buy a Huge Seal for her, I'll be able to hop on her." The Liepard's tail rose sky high seconds before she dove at a Patrat.
The scout waved goodbye to MOM. "Glad to see you again! I'll check in with you when I get a few more Pokémon." With a wave back, she stepped back toward the patio, presumably to read her book. Josh turned back toward Vern. "What do you think? Want to give it a try with Raiden or Granmarg? The Zebstrika and Mudsdale will be on their best behavior, I promise you."

So it seemed this game rocks in more way than one. Of course he could vaguely recall a mount function in the "recent" main-line games, but seeing it in VR? Goddamit, goddamit, goddamit... Vern was pretty much ecstatic to learn that he could actually mount a pokemon in person, this was contrary to the expression of mild surprise that showed in his face.
Standing near the other player he was feeling tempted to get closer to the pokemon, but the realism to which they moved and breathed made him think twice before treating them any different from real-life animals. But is there a line?
Upon checking the UI per instructions, he did not found said mounting icon that the other player mentioned, but instead there were now floating icons above the pokemon in front of him, each with the logo of a basic saddle silhouette, but noticeably grayed out.
Then, upon the player asking him to give it a try, these icons suddenly whitened for those he could mount, Vern was flabbergasted. "Really?" He said in puzzlement, but then why would he lie? This may as well be common kindness shown towards newbies, why refuse?. "Then... can I ride the Mudsdale?" He shyly pointed at the very heavy horse pokemon. Josh Devlin

This was it. Josh had Vern hooked, didn't he? If he had his way, Vern would rarely travel on foot in places where the game didn't require it. Stupid Instances that didn't permit being on a mount. "You can!" the scout reiterated his offer. "Climb on and let's go! There's actually a package-delivery tutorial a little to the east of here. Would be great for you to learn a Pokémon's controls!"
That would be in and of itself its own task. As simple as the delivery quest was, and as many times as he had done it before, he liked redoing it with a new ride on the occasions he got one. Every Pokémon controlled a little differently, and it was best to learn in a zone where he wouldn't have to deal with random encounters.
