“Not the full layout map,” he would clarify.
“I was looking for the map just for this area because… well, in Eorzea they have both world maps, and city maps. If there are specially separated instances, those special event locations have their own mini-map too.”
Huh. Maybe Square could get in on turning XIV into something like this for the 100% immersion…
“Oi, Sid, don’t throw anything that looks important away, okay?” he would warn her as he joined her in the ‘clean-up drive’ part—making sure to keep an eye out for anything like the diary entry that Josh had read out.
“Well, it’s Pokémon, so… anything’s possible, right?” he would muse after the other man had finished reading the entry out loud. Although, the place was giving off some kind of creepy-ass vibes, so there was that…
Anyway…
He’d come to a particularly cluttered stack of papers strewn all over the top of a desk he’d happened to stop by, and began clearing out the papers; making sure to read them if they were any diary entries of the sort…
Until he saw something small, hard, and plastic fall out of a pile he’d moved.
“Whoa… hey, anyone find a door or anything similar? I found a key card of some sort here,” he would announce to everyone else while waving the small plastic thing around.
Never mind if it looked a little scuffed, the question was—would it work?

“Why do you think I pulled out my heavy hitter?” Alicia asked back with a tense smile when Josh asked if she was familiar with a game mechanic from a different series. ”I’m not familiar with that series specifically, but there was a few games in another series that were basically legally-acceptable clones. I hope it brings you some level of comfort that I went out of my way to beat each example as early as possible for EXP to take on the next one with less hassle.”The Gardener carefully scanned everything that was happening while Josh was reading out the diary entry. Which had been concerning to say the least. Josh had been about to speculate what was possibly the cause of the devastation. ‘Nec’-something… She hadn’t ever seen anything that could’ve related to that name. So she couldn’t speculate any further on the matter. Instead she continued to observe, on the off chance she could tell where whatever was coming for them would emerge from. Sidra seemed to be taking it upon herself to tidy up the place, which was helpful if they ended up having to fight in this area. Less debris and mess to possibly get tripped up on. And Altair was rummaging around and… found a keycard? What was this, Rocket Hideout 3.0? ”We passed a few doors that didn’t have power previously. Maybe it works on one of them?” Alicia commented, before looking down the corridor that had opened. The whip crack had gotten louder immediately after it had opened with the power turning on… ”Sidra, Altair, can either of you handle checking those doors? I think we want to contain whatever’s coming in the hall… Giyun? Mind serving as a wall?” Alicia asked of her steel dragon. ”I think I see wha’cha talkin’ about.” Giyun rumbled softly as he walked up to the door way. Bracing himself into it, the Duraludon’s armored hide gleamed brightly as he activated his IRON DEFENSE to prepare for whatever was coming to try and barrel through him. And Alicia knew the golden rule when dealing with an F.O.E. style enemy. You needed every buff you could get on yourself and stack as many debuffs as soon as was physically possible. Anything to bridge the gap in raw stats, if you couldn’t simply out-level the enemy in question. In the spin-off clones she had played, binding the enemy, while difficult, was often critical. This was the idea she was trying to replicate, at least in part, here. Deny the incoming enemy freedom of movement, and it becomes a much easier target to both hit and apply more debuffs too. Giyun was strong and could most likely grapple with whatever was coming, at least temporarily, and that could be just the opening they needed when the going got tough. She had no idea if she could get a coordinated strike against such a style of enemy going between the four of them though. Josh she’d proven herself to already, holding her own against a Naganadel boss, he’d likely at least take ideas from her under advisement. But before now Altair and Sidra had never seen her. They had no reason to think one way or another about her. And against an F.O.E. type target… hesitance and indecision were defeat. ——————————————————————— Prompt: Use Duraludon advantageously (Attempt to use Iron Defense to wall off the most likely angle of approach from the likely-hostile incoming entity. Deny movement and contain the target if combat does break out.) Note: There is enough of a gap that if a human needs to get past Giyun, they can squeeze by him without him moving too much. At the mention of the area map, Josh clicked on the corner of his HUD containing the mini-map; it was the shortcut to pull up the wider area map. All he got was the sound of a buzzer an error message:
Error> Dungeon Map undiscovered.
"When I tried to pull up the area map, I couldn't, either," Josh reported to Altair . "Says it's undiscovered. Wonder if we have to find the map before we can look at it. Sounds closer to Zelda than Eorzea, I'll give you that much." In meatspace, the young man had passing familiarity with XIV, though he couldn't commit to such a game. XIV was one of those games that made one only play it and no other games.
The reflection of the plastic object momentarily blinded Josh. He tilted his head toward Altair 's find, roughly the size of a credit card. "Might not be a bad idea to skim those reports real quick, Sidra ," he called out to his new acquaintance. "Maybe there's a map hidden in one of them if we're lucky, or something," he shrugged before Alicia Westfield 's comment bothered him. "I... never farmed their drops until after the end of the stratum they were on. You're a maniac, you know that?"
They truly were two different types of crazy, weren't they?
With a loud crash that sent large pieces of debris flying toward the party at ludicrous speeds, the enemy that Alicia had prepared for was in front of them, obscured by a large dust cloud in the wake of the displaced stone and metal. All it took was a series of messages at the top of Josh's HUD for him to tense up and call out an alert. "Invasive Species ahead!"
Alert> Invasive Species detected within 100 units. Combat imminent. Information> Combat mode activated. Combat Log> Buzzwole readies Power-Up Punch. Combat Log> Buzzwole's physical attacks improved!

“I… would probably get that a lot…” Alicia mused under her breath at Josh’s return comment, grimacing at that. Was she really that crazy…? It was certainly a scenario that had less positive connotations to his reaction to her holding the line against a boss a while back. And then she had other things to be worried about when the system pinged its warnings. Josh was quick to call his own heads up, and Alicia focused, looking to her currently active partner. ”Giyun!””I see him!” The Duraludon replied, hearing the repeated thuddings of the insectoid legs upon the hardened floor. The towering dragon shifted as he saw the Power-Up Punch wind up and fly, turning a solid strike into a glancing blow with a grunt. But he underestimated the momentum the Buzzwole already had going. With a grating tear of steel being rent, Giyun and the Ultra Beast were ejected from the door way in a clustered heap as the brawling bug body-slammed Alicia’s anchor teammate. ”Bug and Fighting! If anyone’s got Flying types, get ‘em out as fast as possible! Giyun, pin it at the elbows! Fire’s an acceptable substitute, and Psychic can work in a pinch!” Alicia called out in rapid succession, hoping everyone who could answer would be quick about it. At the very least this one was even more obvious than the Naganadel. There wasn’t any other type combination a muscle-bound insectoid could really be. Giyun let out a powerful roar as he moved quickly, trying to get a good hold on the burly bug to grapple with it. But the bonus Attack was making that difficult. The already physically powerful bug was already given a greater bonus. That was letting it simply out-muscle Alicia’s Duraludon. And if they didn’t think of something quick, the Buzzwole was going to get loose and wreak havoc. … But considering its build… the upper body was basically humanoid. The same body mechanics should apply… ”Giyun, Breaking Swipe! Aim for the waist! Everyone who can, follow suit! Try to cripple its ability to develop power!” Alicia could only hope she was right. At the very least, the Breaking Swipe would undo the Power-Up Punch. > Giyun readies Breaking Swipe.”Right!” Giyun answered, generating draconic energy in his claws. After a quick swerve to avoid a jab, he struck, raking the powered claws. > Buzzwole’s physical attacks are weakened! This was going to be indicative of how well they handled the boss. If they struggled here, they were going to have to abandon this quest… ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin Altair Sidra TL;DR: Giyun is current engaged in close quarters with the Buzzwole in the middle of the room. He’s grappling it to keep it occupied so it doesn’t attack less physically defensive allies, but he can’t hold it off forever.

Sidra may have been inclined to skim through the reports in search of a map, if it hadn’t been for the Buzzwole invading their space.
Sidra came to a grinding stop mid motion as she saw this, for lack of a better term, miniboss. And it was at that moment she realized that she definitely wasn’t at the right level for this sort of threat.
But moments later she came to her game-senses. Battle was a part of the game, and so she would have to partake in it. She summoned her FUECOCO onto the field, its huge derpy smile greeting the situation even as it realized what was happening.
“Coco INCINERATE the joints on its arms!” Sidra commanded. Though she did not know if there was critical hits or appendage-disabling mechanics in this game it would surely be worth a try.
Fuecoco was not about to question such a command, and so bellowed fire aimed at the Buzzwole’s arm-joints.
Prompt Used: - Use Fuecoco in an advantageous way? (Attempts to disable Arm-based attacks from the Buzzwole by damaging its joints?)

The Fuecoco's arm-aimed INCINERATE left a nasty burn on the insectile fighter's arm, softening the retaliatory VITAL THROW. Even so, such an attack would hurt; were Sidra's Pokémon to suffer its full force, it would still be a suplex, and quite the painful one for such a small Pokémon. Not skipping a beat after the careful attack, it completely shifted gears, LUNGING at Saber with its spear-like proboscis and lifting him off the ground. "Saber!" Josh cried, seeing the huge hit despite Giyun's debuff.
Josh ordered for a THUNDER WAVE to slow the insect down, Saber complying in a desperate attempt to free itself from the fighting-type's sharp appendage. Both of them were squirming, the scout nervously watching his Manectric's HP fall. "There will be time to patch him up with Aqua Ring later! Altair , finish it off now!"

Alicia grimaced as the Buzzwole managed to break away despite her best efforts. But between Fuecoco and Saber, the beast was on getting whittled down quickly. She glanced over, expecting their last member to launch the coup-de-grace. … Except it appeared that dreaded siren all game enthusiasts feared seemed to have struck at the worst moment. There was no apparent reaction from Altair at all. As if the player behind the avatar was away from their gaming set-up. ”Giyun, it’s up to us now! Full force!”> Giyun readies Dragon Claw!”Yer not escapin’ a second time, ya muscle head!” Giyun roared out. The insectoid wheeled on him, a fist clenched. > Buzzwole readies Hammer Arm!Even Burned and Paralyzed, that was going to sting, and Alicia held her breath as the two behemoths set to clash a second time. Fists were thrown, claws were swung. > Critical Hit!A flash briefly obscured the clash, casting even more confusion in who came out on top in the cross strike. Until Giyun let out a roar of victory, the flash fading to show the Buzzwole being flung back from the blow. The muscular insect crashed into the far wall of the lab and slumped down. The powerful clawing attack, with the boost of a critical hit, was enough to tear the rest of the Ultra Beast’s HP apart in one blow. Unfortunately, the steel dragon did not come out of it unscathed. The Hammer Arm had still connected and left an obvious and visible dent in his armored carapace. ”Giyun? Are you alright?” Alicia asked of her sword and shield. ”I can still put ‘em up for another big fight or two. But that last punch was nothing to scoff at, disabled or not…” Giyun replied with a grunt, taking a breath. ”Alright… then lets get back to what we were doing before this beastie interrupted us…” Alicia mused, looking over to Altair. Didn’t he have a keycard earlier? They’d have to pluck it off of him to use it, but hopefully an AFK notice would come up soon. And that it would allow quest vital items to be grabbed to continue on. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin Sidra Altair{Team Status}Tikani - Bayleef (Unharmed) Giyun - Duraludon (Above Average)

Josh gasped when he saw how hard of a hit Giyun had taken. "Arceus, that looked like it stung! I can have Ulysses pop his Aqua Ring if we need it," the scout offered. That dent looked huge. None of his Pokémon would have been able to tank a hit like that, what with them being mostly Agility specialists. Such was the danger of overspecialization... which granted multiple real-world creatures their place on the endangered species list, including one of Josh's favorite animals.
The Buzzwole's body, sent flying toward a door from the force of the DRAGON CLAW, had been ripped from its tracks. A "puzzle solved" jingle echoed around Josh and the rest of the party. Walking the hall to the open door, Josh found it to be a defunct data center, filled with stacks and stacks of dusty, lifeless servers, frayed wires, and the largest rats' nest he had ever seen behind them. On top of one of the stacks appeared to be a misplaced file folder. Snatching it, he came out of the low-light room and read the contents of a memo aloud:
13:40 11-13-XXXX
It's dead. It's actually dead. We won. I could faint, I'm so happy. Of course, there were casualties— so many, some of which will haunt me for the rest of my life— but we really did it. The portal grid was the key— what's really amazing is that we were actually able to fashion a weapon out of what we found on the other side, especially given the time restrictions. I wish we'd been able to do it faster— many innocent lives were lost— but in the end, I'm happy it worked out this way.
They're calling me a hero.
"Whatever this portal is, it might be worth trying to find," Josh suggested. "Assuming we still meet the level recommendations. I get the feeling we won't, and will have to come back later." It seemed Altair was afk. For a moment Sidra considered checking up on him, but decided against it as there were more important things to do. Important things such as grabbing the keycard from Altair. Which she did after spamming attempts until the game allowed the action.
With the item in hand she turned to the other people in the group and said. “I’ve got the card. Let’s go test it.” Before she stormed off intent on pushing forward and maybe even finish this before Altair returned from his impromptu AFK’ing.

“Bruh. Why’d you swipe the card?!” he would type into the group chat window, before legitimately turning on the voice chat and then the sounds of a cat yowling in the background would be heard—at least over the two ‘siblings’ headsets.
“Had a cat situation, sorry!” he would type in the group chat as he would then grab the keycard back, before rolling his eyes at his ‘sister’.
“Try having a hairball disaster to clean up after!” he would add, before—okay, what a mess—
Quickly switching out the Greninja for the Rufflet who would then start screaming at the body of the gigantic bug that had somehow squeezed its way into where they were, and—
“Oh, come on… why’s that thing in the way,” he would sigh—as he would redirect the avian who was now yelling bloody murder at the passed-out Buzzwole before he pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Come on, Kyouya, thing’s already been dealt with, let’s look over there…” he would shush the avian over in the direction of the unexplored map—
Thankfully there was nothing waiting in the darkness at least, so…
“Sid, next time holler if the cat’s yowling again, eh?” he would say her way before smacking his ‘twin’ upside the head—that was, before the Rufflet had found something else in the direction he’d run off to.
The avian would return, pointing stubby wings in the direction of…
“Is that a door…?” he would squint into the gloom.

Cat problems, of course. That would explain why Altair went AFK for so long. It was one of the reasons Josh didn't have pets. They would get into his Magic collection, his rats' nest of cords connecting his extensive retro video game setup... the list went on and on. An outdoor animal, he wouldn't mind so much if he lived out in the country. Imagine being able to ride horseback whenever he wanted. Alas, he lived in the second or third largest city in Illinois - Rockford and Peoria traded places with each other seemingly every census.
"We took care of it while you were gone. Thing was about to take Giyun out," Josh gestured toward the grotesque, muscular insect. And that thing was mountable? How? Where would one even put a saddle? Besides, who would even want to? Xira was going to be loud when she evolved. Those wings had to be deafening.
Looking at their map, it seemed like their exploration had been pretty thorough. "Just two doors left, it seems," Josh noted aloud before heading through a door directly opposite of the locked one. It looked like it was once a data center. An archive, perhaps? With the digital key to the terminal, thanks to Sidra and Alicia Westfield 's fine work, Josh accessed the computer's most recent files. "Hey, come take a look at this," he loudly requested without yelling. Were the others to follow, they, too, would be able to read an ominous log:
19:55 11-25-XXXX
Something is wrong. A darkness persists, even after the threat is gone.
Am I being paranoid?
I hear a voice in my sleep. It calls me a killer, and calls itself the judge.
Josh's skin tingled upon reading it. "Just what in the Great One's name happened here?" he asked them as yet another deafening whipcrack echoed, making his hair stand on end. "That sounded like thunder, and very near thunder at that. Be ready. I think we're close to the boss." Alicia nodded softly as Josh reminded her he had a clerical mon available to tend to wounds, even if it was slow going. ”Please. We have no idea what’s coming and I at least would like my strongest teammate to be in less danger of falling down to a particularly nasty shot.” she answered Josh. ”Can’t say I wouldn’t appreciate a patch-up.” Giyun agreed smiling. The remaining diary notes that would be found were of… considerable concern. And Sid got the card, so they could at least continue on. At which point Altair suddenly returned from whatever- Oh”Cats… do have a way of demanding attention at the worst times…” Alicia muttered in what felt like commiseration from personal experience. She had no idea how she would have kept hers under control if she wasn’t well off enough from her work to be able build the set up she did for the furry fiends. It had taken more time, effort, and funds than she was personally ready to admit. But it was so fun watching the two of them play in what she’d given- Focus![/b] ”… I don’t like whatever that is…” Alicia mused matter-of-factly at the thunderous noise. ”Since that Buzzwole was just a mini-boss. I’m worried about thinking just how powerful the actual Boss is going to be…”——————————————————————— Josh Devlin Altair SidraLink to Round 2 RollTL;DR: Didn’t really have any capacity to interact with the last prompt I could see … seeing my roll, I’m actually a bit happy about that. It wouldn’t take too long before the Rufflet would lead the way over to the door that he’d spotted; squawking noisily all the way.
“Well, talk about luck…” he would trail off as he spun the partially-defaced key card between his fingers.
“If anyone needs to heal the fuck up, go do it now because who knows what’s waiting for us on the other side of the door after I tap this…” he would gesture at the place where the key card would normally be tapped on to gain access.
“Everyone ready?” he would follow up a few moments later before tapping the key card and waiting for what would happen next.

It didn’t take long before Altair returned. But by then Sidra had already taken the card. Luckily for her twin, she didn’t fight back or even attempt to deny the retaking.. Nay this was Altair’s accomplishment, and she had only taken it to push the progress.
But she was painfully aware that there was little she could really do to help the progress. And so she stayed in the shadows of the group, letting the others push forward as she kept an eye on their rear, nothing would sneak up on them, even as they read the final diary place and prepared to walk through the door that would be unlocked by the keycard.
“As ready as I'll ever be.” Sidra replied to Altair’s question.

A DISTURBING REVELATION
The brave party of four, invigorated by their victory over the hulking Invasive Species, delves deeper into the eerily-lit laboratory. As Altair and Alicia Westfield incapacitated more and more small Pokémon feeding on the lab's exposed wires, the power became increasingly stable. Stable enough to boot some of the computers whose monitors had long since burned in with the white, snow-like veil of static. A few were miraculously still working, letting Josh Devlin uncover some disturbing logs.
The battle with the BUZZWOLE was brutal; quite bloody for those who had gore enabled in their settings. Alicia Westfield 's DURALUDON bravely stood on the front lines, shielding the rest of her allies' Pokémon from POWER-UP PUNCHES, HAMMER ARMS, and other fighting-type moves that would have reduced less sturdy Pokémon to unconsciousness in a split second. With the last of its strength, the BUZZWOLE lifts Josh Devlin 's MANECTRIC off the ground and hurls it into a nearby locked door. Metal screeches and twists violently, the electric wolf unable to remain conscious and FAINTING after the violent, concussive impact.
Whether they squabble over the keycard or resolve their differences, Sidra and Altair eventually open the door using their important find. All four are immediately met with the stench of ozone, evidence of a giant electric discharge present through the antechamber. At its rear is another door that Altair 's keycard will open, this one labeled RESTRICTED ACCESS. Beyond, it is impossible to see; while the remainder of the lab is brightly lit, this wing is large enough that of the brightly lit antechamber does not reach far enough to discern anything meaningful visually.
Alicia Westfield and her DURALUDON courageously lead the way into the large room, the rest of the party following with trepidation. Justified trepidation at that. Another deafening whipcrack roars, this one the loudest yet. Those who have REALISTIC pain thresholds enabled would experience migraine-like throbbing from the wake of a POWER WHIP rolling their eardrums like the double bass of a metal band. In the same instant, the metallic cord serving as the Grass-type attack's conduit strikes the steel-type dragon. Even with its resistance to the attack, the Pokémon is simply too spent to remain standing after its engagement with the BUZZWOLE. It suffers the same fate as Josh Devlin 's MANECTRIC: not a single hit point remained in its tank.
A brilliant DAZZLING GLEAM from its source's head makes seeing anything but a wiry silhouette impossible, those with REALISTIC pain thresholds suffering moderate to strong eye strain from the floodlight stop its head. It is the shape of the Invasive Species, XURKITREE. Only this one is titanic in nature, larger than even the COLOSSAL POKEMON found in the Arena. A second POWER WHIP narrowly misses Altair , striking a nearby metal table and launching it toward the entrance. Its components twist and jam the opening, making escape impossible until the giant is defeated.
A BOSS life bar stretches over the top of the quartet's HUDs as the Pokémon looses a DISCHARGE that stretches almost to the edges of the enormous chamber. The sound of shattering glass is all that can be heard over the thunderous crackling. The combination of sound, light, and electricity overwhelms the bodies of Pokémon in a way not one of the party's members had seen before. They all remain standing, but are weakened in a way none of them could have expected.
The XURKITREE lets out an alien huff, cooling down after its barrage of attacks and giving the trainers a brief respite to prepare. It wouldn't last long, and with some of their best Pokémon out of commission, time was of the essence! Perhaps all that practice in the ARENA would save them from the very real danger of whiting out!
