FREEFORM BATTLE
Josh had left his Naganadel stored away upon his return to the desert; as soon as he had taken the Ultra Beast to Asper to be fitted with a saddle, the creature started acting completely out of control, nearly stinging him several times before he could get the alien-like dragon back into his Poké Ball. Instead, he would be returning to the sands outside the Dune District with three of his most loyal Pokémon.
Granmarg would be one of them, his trusty steed kicking up a cloud of sand as the blonde rode toward the place he had in mind for a match to grow stronger alongside Alicia Westfield . Once he was sufficiently far away from the city, Josh opened up his direct messages and tagged his best friend on the server.
DIRECT MESSAGE> We talked about this not long ago. Let's brawl. I'm a couple miles south of the Dune District.

They had talked about it, and Alicia cracked a smirk as she saw the message calling her out. She had worked with her team, primarily making efforts to incorporate Venex into their tactics. She hadn’t actually left Ostellia since their battle with the Naganadel, so she was not yet aware of how wild the Ultra Beast could be outside of the continent. But as a result she was nearby and able to respond easily enough. DIRECT MESSAGE> InboundHer reply was short and to the point. They could chatter more when they actually were face to face again. And in short order Alicia would arrive wearing a small grin on her lips. And with Tikani, Giyun, and Venex all out of their Pokeballs following her. ”Hey again. Been a heck of a time so far.” Alicia called to Josh in greeting. ”Weird to be on opposite sides after standing with you in two big battles now.” Tikani noted with a hum. ”Boss’ call is Boss’ call. Hard ta argue with the nutty gal.” Giyun added. ”I’m not that bad.” Alicia protested, looking over her shoulder. All three of her teammates just gave her a pointed look. Alicia wilted a bit under the judging stares. Josh Devlin

By the time Alicia and her Pokémon arrived, Josh and his trio of Pokémon were roaming about the arena, his Mudsdale kicking up sand in a circle to designate the battleground's bounds. While a circle of zone-marker dots would do that job for them once the match started, having a visual ahead of time wouldn't hurt. Ares the Charmander was perched atop Saber's back, the Manectric howling loudly when he saw Alicia. While the three didn't have any direct words for Josh's friend right away, they certainly would when the match started.
Ares buried one of his hands in Saber's fur and held his tail in the other, whipping it toward one of Alicia's Pokémon as part of an EMBER-filled ride-by attack. That tail might even crack like one, too, with how fast the Manectric's QUICK ATTACK was. Josh was jealous of the Charmander; when was his turn to go so fast?
"Good luck, and may the best trainer win," the noble-sounding horse greeted their friend and rival as the match seemed to be starting with the blitzkrieg Alicia likely knew Josh for.

Alicia nodded softly, seeing Granmarg giving them an early visual of the size of the battlefield they were going to be working with. It was definitely a good size, Saber would have plenty of room to make use of that speed he was capable of. Though she was surprised to see Ares mounted on Saber’s back. That was a thing that could be done? She’d have to look into taking that page out of Josh’s book later, already she could see the advantages. She waved to the Mudsdale at his greeting, answering him. ”Right back to all of you as well!”And then the fight was on, as Josh’s team took the ‘first to strike wins’ mentality to heart. Not much time, with how fast the Manectric was! The yellow and blue hound blurred into motion as he rushed towards her starting teammates. ”Like Alicia planned!” Tikani called, taking up position behind Giyun to give Saber and Ares one less target to go after easily. But the Bayleef wasn’t only going to use Giyun as a shield. The leaves on her neck and head fluttered as she started spreading LEECH SEEDs to either side of the steel dragon. The trap was set. Giyun in turn braced himself for the incoming charge. As had been proven once before already, his defenses were solid. And he took neutral damage from the EMBER compared to Tikani. But that was only half the reason he was chosen for the front line. The Manectric would collide with him, and the flames would wash over him. But on impact he would jerk and twist his body, launching into a BREAKING SWIPE that would hopefully connect and send Saber sprawling into Tikani’s newly placed LEECH SEED ‘mines’ The plan Alicia had hatched for them was one intended to remove Josh’s biggest advantage as soon as possible. The entangling and draining vines would at least hobble Saber to some degree if they could latch on. But at his velocity landing them as a proper ranged attack was a dicey prospect to say the least. She had nothing to match Saber’s speed effectively otherwise. And even if Giyun couldn’t knock them into it the presence of the grassy ‘mine field’ would force Saber to look twice before racing in for another pass. A moment’s hesitation could be the difference between victory and defeat. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin PROMPT: Take shelter behind your partner and set up a mine field to complicate future charges (Tikani — Leech Seed) PROMPT: Stand firm against the charge and attempt to deflect the opponent into a poor position (Giyun — Breaking Swipe)

Blistering speed came at a cost, and that cost was often durability. That was something Giyun was full of, both attacks barely scratching the Duraludon. Just like Ares was using Saber as cover, Tikani was using Giyun as cover. In a way, they were a mount-and-rider team, though more figuratively. Alicia's dragon used Saber's momentum against him in its BREAKING SWIPE, sending the duo sliding back into the Bayleef's speed trap.
Ares let go of his tail, gripping the electric wolf for dear life. The grunting noises the Charmander made were unlike anything Josh had heard from him; his small body simply could not handle the momentum shifts needed to remain in control of the Manectric or himself. A rallying HOWL invigorated them both as the web of vines prevented them from making another such charge again.
Saber had ways to stay on the offensive against clever or slippery foes, too. He had equally fast attacks that could chip away at the Duraludon, including a SHOCK WAVE that sent a wave of hot sand flying at both of them! If that didn't blind Alicia's Pokémon, a layer of superheated SMOKESCREEN enveloping Ares, Saber, and part of the Leech Seed minefield would keep the fire and electric Pokémon out of sight. Were that black smoke to billow higher, it could threaten to burn away the vines completely!
Alicia Westfield PROMPT: - use a fire or electric-type move (Saber - Shock Wave) PROMPT: - attempt to conceal yourself (Ares - Smokescreen)

Alicia made a quick pump as she saw the result of the strategy she’d devised. Having foreknowledge on your opponent like this was such a useful thing for planning out your moves ahead of time. Something that was invaluable when it came to enacting complex strategies. Precious seconds would be used to convey a more convoluted idea. It also helped that the strategy wasn’t Josh-specific, it applied to any opponent who had a significant speed advantage over them. But Josh’s team was as quick-witted as they were fast on their feet. Saber’s long range attacks were just as rapid as his feet, and the storm of heated sand was flung their way. Giyun loosed a roar, closing his eyes and charging into the spray to catch as much of it on his stronger body. Tikani had some synergies with Venex, they’d discovered, so the Duraludon was going to take as much heat as he could for the Bayleef. Though despite an effort to avoid being blinded by the sand, he did still feel a sting in his eyes that threatened to disable him later. He was going to need some help with that afterward, as his arms couldn’t actually reach his head easily. And while Giyun committed fully to his shielding role, Tikani repositioned to open up some space. That smoke was going to free them soon, so they had to act fast while Saber and Ares were still pinned. She whipped her head leaf around, loosing another move. But this time, it wasn’t another Leech Seed, it would be a possibly-debilitating POISON POWDER. And she didn’t even have to worry about friendly fire, as both of her teammates were poison immune for one reason or another. Which was why Giyun was charging in. The smoke wouldn’t matter much when you had an attack that covered a wide area. And by now the remaining unactivated seeds were already wilted by the heated smoke, so the ‘mines’ were currently duds until a new layer was set. Tikani’s Poison Powder targeted the general area. Meanwhile Giyun had his DRAGON TAIL that he could sweep through the area. Until the Leech Seed vines were destroyed by Ares’ smoke, there was not much the Charmander and Manectric could do to avoid the oncoming dragon. You didn’t need to see when your opponents weren’t able to move in time. Later, though, the sand and smoke could be a bigger problem. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin PROMPT — Use a powder to create a poisonous field in the smoke-coated area (Tikani - Poison Powder) PROMPT — Charge at the pinned opponents and launch a wide-area sweeping spin (Giyun - Dragon Tail)

The DRAGON TAIL blindsided Saber, tripping him and catapulting Ares above the now-thinning smoke. If that heated smoke wouldn't bring down Tikani's field of Leech Seeds, then such a wide attack would. Though Saber had withstood the attack, its sheer strength forced him out of bounds and back to his Poké Ball, prompting Josh to select a new party leader before the battle could continue.
Granmarg, the only other Pokémon Josh had entered in the match, galloped toward the thinning mist, ready to trample Giyun with HI HORSEPOWER the moment he could see -- and the Bayleef's venomous spores stopped falling. Ares, helpless in the sky, could not avoid being covered by them. All it took was one whiff for him to feel dizzy and weak. Knowing he was going to fall soon, the Charmander put the rest of his energy into a wide-arc FLAMETHROWER aimed at both of Alicia's Pokémon. It was a powerful attack, but it would leave Ares with barely any stamina. For the rest of the battle, he could only use basic attacks. Alicia Westfield PROMPT: - get a running start (Granmarg - Hi Horsepower) PROMPT: - make a last stand (Ares - Flamethrower)

She had expected the Mudsdale to be the third member entered into the battle, but it was nice that Giyun’s Dragon Tail had confirmed it. What was surprising was that Ares mounted one last burst of strength to send plumes of flame all around. There was no way to easily mitigate the incoming damage for Tikani this time, she and Giyun were too out of position for that. Still, the Charmander’s condition showed that this was all he had left, he would be a non-factor soon enough if they could endure the Flamethrower. What was a problem was Granmarg, who was still quite fresh. But their encounter with the Boss Naganadel just a short while back told Alicia something about the Mudsdale. While the sturdy horse had potent attacks and plenty of staying power, actually keeping up a barrage of heavy hits was not something he was good at. Josh’s chance to inflict serious damage with Granmarg was limited. ”Incoming, Giyun!” Fortunately for her, Tikani and Giyun were aware of this as well. With the warning call made the steel dragon knew to brace himself, even though he didn’t know exactly which direction the Musdale would charge from. The flames washed over them both in short order. And Alicia winced at the keening note of a Super Effective hit on Tikani, knowing a second one was about to follow it on Giyun. Gritting through the painful burns, Tikani moved to do her part when it came to making sure Giyun endured the incoming attack. Focusing her strength, she raised her head leaf high and let it shimmer. Fields of hexagons flashed and chimed as they formed and linked into interlocked barriers in the air between the Mudsdale and the Duraludon. It was a REFLECT screen that Granmarg would have to power through in his charge, bleeding off precious strength from his Hi Horsepower in the process. Giyun’s body also began shimmering as he made use of the heat Ares provided, reinforcing his armored hide. He doubled down on his protective nature with a not-inconsiderable IRON DEFENSE. By the time Granmarg made contact with him he would not find an easily trampled target. What he would be confronted with was a fortress of Steel and psychic protection that would not yield easily. Certainly the Mudsdale would have enough momentum still to make Giyun skid back, but not as much as Josh would want. ——————————————————————— Josh DevlinPROMPT — Anticipate a move before it hits (Tikani - Reflect) PROMPT — Use a Defense/Sp. Def raising move (Giyun - Iron Defense)

The venom from Tikani's POISON POWDER alone was sufficient to exhaust Ares after such a strenuous attack; Alicia Westfield 's team could play defense, just as they had done. After Josh had withdrawn the collapsed Charmander, he hurled Saber's Poké Ball back onto the sands, the already-weak Manectric hobbling into formation alongside the much tougher ground-type.
Josh's reaction time was swift as ever, sighting the construction of a REFLECT screen that he could not afford to fully form. "Saber, QUICK ATTACK!" the riding enthusiast commanded his Manectric, the wolf once again disappearing into a blur in an effort to bring down that barrier before it could fully form.
Whether it was a level advantage or a tactical advantage, Alicia had the upper hand from wire to wire so far, even managing to repel Granmarg's most deadly charge. He had a great retort planned, but could not do so while Saber was around. Instead, the equine about-faced and kicked sharply with his hind legs, the ROCK SMASH aiming to shatter Giyun's reinforced natural armor.

The rapid strike was a bit of a surprise. Saber was certainly one of Josh’s most capable Pokemon to be able to achieve those blistering speeds despite the injuries and poison. The Manectric’s collision, unexpected as it was, caused a flashing Critical Hit. The Bayleef cried out in shock as she was sent tumbling away. This meant that her Reflect didn’t finish forming in time, letting Granmarg hit Giyun harder than Alicia had been hoping for. The Duraludon was knocked for a loop, and was unable to retaliate effectively as the brutal Rock Smash put cracks in his armor. The shield crumbled and collapsed. But Alicia smiled. Because while she was down two to one, Saber was on his last legs and Granmarg had expended a lot of strength toppling Giyun. ”The field is yours, Venex.” Alicia declared. Both properly naming her newest teammate and informing Josh that there was some reason she was going to step back and let him choose how to fight right now. The Ultra Beast let out a mighty roar as an intimidation tactic as he swooped into the fray. The Naganadel came to her powerful. She hadn’t had long to work with him, but she had helped him hone his edges. Venex immediately zeroed in on the weakened Manectric. In a moment that would be eerily reminiscent of their boss battle, his stinger gleamed as he brought it forward. While the species was actually more capable with Special Attacks, their physical side was hardly unremarkable. Venex aimed carefully, locking on while largely out of range, before surging forward with a FELL STINGER to try and drop Saber and reap the potent rewards. Exhausted as he was, Alicia doubted Granmarg would be able to outlast Venex if Saber fell here. ——————————————————————— Josh DevlinPROMPT - Carefully line up a precision shot (Venex - Fell Stinger)

Alicia's smile was not without warrant. Josh had stared Venex down once: the Naganadel they bad barely defeated in the desert. That horrific battle was not far from where they were at now. This time, though, it would be a lot harder. He was on his own, and the Ultra Beast was under a trainer's control. With great speed, the long and bloated FELL STINGER came. Saber reared up high to shield his head from being pierced. Instead, the barb struck his exposed leg. The venom quickly caused it to turn purple, the poison reducing Saber to unconsciousness. The electric-type fainting wasn't the worrying part: it was the small sword symbol and the frighteningly large yellow numbers bouncing in front of Venex's model, signifying the enormous buff.
It would be a one-on-one battle: Granmarg's boundless stamina versus Venex's amazing strength. The most important part for the Mudsdale was avoiding being poisoned. Josh briefly pulled up Granmarg'e battle condition, noting that the horse could likely only use his strongest move one more time. He had to play things safe and bide his time until it was right for him to pounce like a big cat. He circled the Naganadel, waiting for the right moment to deliver a devastating COUNTER! Alicia Westfield PROMPT: - take a hit on a non-essential part of your body (Saber) PROMPT: - reference tactics or strategy (Granmarg - Counter)

Alicia folded her arms, watching the battle unfold. If she were being honest, she did hope she could win the battle without calling the Ultra Beast forward. Communication was pretty much non-existent she’d discovered, so it was like one of those RPGs where you were at the mercy of AI controlled allies. She had to simply hope the Naganadel didn’t make a critical error. … Like he was maybe about to do if her read was right. Feeling the surge of power in his body from successfully proc’ing Fell Stinger’s power boost, Venex circled Granmarg like a Mandibuzz, chittering and trilling in that alien tongue that currently defied all attempts at translation. The Naganadel smelled blood, and wanted to capitalize immediately. Changing tracks, the stinger now began to ooze a more tarry toxin, more potent than anything he or his boss battle counterpart had displayed. He was indeed aiming to envenomate the Mudsdale and bring the sturdy horse down with a brutal full power strike. Venex dove, POISON JAB-primed stinger ready. Right into the Counter Granmarg was preparing. ——————————————————————— Josh DevlinPROMPT: Act without orders (Venex - Poison Jab)

The trap had been set, the Ultra Beast operating purely by imstinct. Whether by ignorance of their trainer or by the inability to communicate with one another, Alicia had allowed Venex to walk right into the snare the Granmarg had been set. Had the equine not readied a defense against it, the poison-type's gelid venom would have dissolved part of Josh's partner from the inside out. He was prepared, kicking his hard hoof directly into the Naganadel's rear in an effort to shunt the natural weapon back into its abdomen, much like a Beedrill's sting.
Josh gasped at the power behind the sting; it chunked most of Granmarg's stamina, the young man witnessing more damage than he had ever seen dealt in one attack. It looked like the horse was going to buckle at any moment... Alicia Westfield PROMPT: - turn the power up to 11 (Granmarg - Counter)

Alicia grimace, glancing away and unable to watch. Except she let an eye open slightly. Train-Wreck-In-Progress syndrome was in full effect as she felt it continue in slow motion. Granmarg wheeled and struck with a precision she would not have expected him to he capable of. Venex was thrown back and tumbled into the sands, flailing in pain and letting out a keening wail. The Naganadel spasmed and floundered on the desert, before curling up and trilling low and deep. The Gardener recalled her Ultra Beast and heaved a deep sigh. ”Forced AI Control party members. Always the same. I’m getting P3 nightmare flashbacks…” she complained in good nature. ”Well fought.”She set it up as best as she could for Venex to sweep. And he choked. It was good to know that AI still had its moments of sheer idiocy. ——————————————————————— Josh DevlinVenex is KO’d. Josh Devlin wins!

Wait, what? The plan actually worked? Was there some kind of obedience mechanic at UNOVR, too? Sure, Ultra Beasts were supposed to be rare. But why did Venex seem to not only fight on its own, yet also walk right into an obvious trap? Then Alicia mentioned Venex was AI-controlled. As the counterblow landed, a satisfied grin appeared on his face. The cascading numerals indicating damage dealt were in larger font than they had been. Was this due to the amount of damage dealt being above a certain threshold? Even so, it did not matter, and Josh was sure it was a setting he could adjust somewhere if the font got large enough to clutter his view.
"So you're saying that you can't control your Naganadel at all?" Josh asked. "Because I thought you had me there. That's a really good thing to know. How about after we get patched up, we find a day to figure out how Venex and Izoni... work, for lack of a better word?" He also dreaded thinking about what ridiculously high level he would need to be to strap a saddle to Izoni... if the game would even let him saddle up at all.
