"Raiden, STOMP!" Josh commanded, the empty-saddled Zebstrika chasing after a wild Doduo fleeing at top speed. As a Blitzle, Raiden would never have been able to catch up. As a Zebstrika, though, the added speed let him close the gap. He rammed and trampled the flightless bird with ease before returning to Josh's side. A fanfare played around Josh, a grin on his face as a pop-up briefly obscured the center of his vision:
Information> Josh reaches level 6
The moment the message faded away, the "mount" icon in the corner of Josh's UI turned solid. At last, at long last, the blonde had a backup mount in case something happened to Granmarg. This one was quite a bit faster than the Mudsdale, too; it would certainly take some getting used to. "You see that, Alicia?" Josh tried to capture his friend's attention as Raiden reared. "This should be so fun! Ready to break Tikani in, too?"

Alicia smirked as she caught up to the racing duo. Josh had a fire lit under him when he saw how close he was to a level that would let him mount up on Raiden. And she could understand the excitement of victorious fanfare and numbers going up, especially when they came with a special bonus. āI see, I see!ā she called back to Josh. āāBreak me inā? Is he for real right now?ā Tikani asked with a hint of incredulous disbelief. āHorse-based lingo, refers to the first ride where mount and rider get used to each other.ā Alicia explained as she hopped up onto the Bayleef. A saddle had been surprisingly pricey, even considering the grass Pokemonās figure. >Warning, Level insufficient. That message popping up was both surprising and likely to get annoying in the long run. But she was basically frozen there until she did something. Normally that would require her getting back off. But she had an idea. āTikani?āThe Bayleef just nodded, extending several vines and wrapping them around Aliciaās waist and legs. She pulled them taut to help Alicia stay seated. They had discussed this before hand, which was why Alicia had shelled out the cash for the saddle in the first place. With a small but satisfying ping, the pop-up changed >Difficulty Mitigation detected. And now it let her clear it without actually getting ejected from the saddle. She loved it when a good idea came together. With a quick whistle, she directed the Bayleef to pull up beside Josh and Raiden. āWhenever you two are ready!āJosh Devlin

"Yep!" Josh chirped at Alicia's confirmation. "You sound like you're an avid rider yourself. You get the chance to go horseback riding much back home?" He asked, trying to get to know her better. Then, awkward silence from him. Perhaps it was too much to ask? They hadn't known each other long, but already asking questions about life outside the game?
Alicia was certainly taking the easy way out, using Tikani's VINE WHIPS as straps. Resourceful, but did that ever seem restricting. It did give Josh an idea for when he rode a flying mount for the first time. That would be a long ways away, though; with Slider needing both an evolution and a high level to be ridden, he would only be left dreaming what it would be like to soar. He also did a double take when he saw just how gigantic the Bayleef was. "I didn't realize it until now, but Tikani's... huge. Is she an Alpha? She has to be. If UNOVR has alphas, that's so cool. Would love to have some myself. Imagine riding on a Jolteon!"
With the two settled, Josh squeezed Raiden's sides just as tightly as he did with Granmarg. With a whinny, the Zebstrika bolted. Not only did the smaller horse accelerate faster, sparks flying from his hooves, but he had a higher top speed than Granmarg did. "Gaaaaaaahhhhhh!!" the rider panicked as iron spires, hills, and tall grass whipped past him. Alicia Westfield

Alicia froze up a bit as Josh went poking about life in reality. She visibly had to take a deep breath to settle herself. It was an innocent question. And a very understandable one given that she had displayed some knowledge of the topic in question. He didnāt mean anything by it. He didnāt mean anything.āN-Noā¦ Not many places for it where I am. I just happen across things on random internet bingesā¦ā she admitted, her voice a bit more shaky than she wouldāve liked. Anxiety crept up on her despite herself. āAliciaā so far has been a pretty big success so far, even if she the number of people she was consistently interacting with could be counted on one hand. But in her experience no one really gave a rip about āHelenā. Irrational as it was, she worried that answering too many questions about reality would invoke the curse she believed herself to be under. She didnāt want to wake up one day to find she was just as alone on UNOVR as she was in life. The moment Josh changed tracks to asking about something in the game, though, Alicia relaxed and chuckled. āAs far as Iāve see, UNOVR doesnāt actually have Alphas like PLA. But I was looking over my starting class when I realized it myself and I found out something interesting. This is technically a cosmetic effect from having the Gardener Class. All Grass type Pokemon you have are larger than their normal counterparts. No other benefit from the increased size, at least stat wise. But the extra size is useful here.āāā¦ Oh Aliciaā¦ā Tikani muttered quietly to herself, glancing back enough to look at the player riding her. If Josh wasnāt paying attention, he might miss the extent of Aliciaās reaction to the first question. But Tikani was in a perfect position to feel every twitch, or lack thereof, in her trainerās body. Putting two and two together made her wonder what had happened before they first met with Dr. Bunyaās help. Josh Devlin

Panicking wouldn't do Josh any good. He had to remember his fundamentals. The tutorial with Granmarg taught him everything he needed to know to bring his speeding mount under control. Letting up on his grip slightly, Josh signaled for the horse to slow. Though it took many circles around the tall grass field they were nearby, Josh being careful not to enter it lest he trigger an unwanted encounter, he was able to get Raiden to a controllable speed. "Whoa! You're... really fast, Raiden!" Josh complimented, still gasping for air from riding at what he felt was full gallop.
"That's... nothing," Raiden answered in a snarky tone. "Try riding me in a Quick Attack."
Even after bringing Raiden to a stop near Alicia and Tikani, Josh was stunned. He had never thought about using PokƩmon moves while in the saddle. Would it be faster than a normal Sprint? How fast was Raiden's "normal" Sprint, anyway? He wanted to go fast, and he was getting it. It was a lot scarier than he thought it would be.
Be careful what you wish for, Devlin.
"You too?" Josh asked, trying to comfort Alicia in the silence. Perhaps he had been a bit too insensitive. He would try to write it off, transition away from life beyond the game, anything to make her more comfortable. "There's no place to do it where I'm at, either. One of the reasons I got into UNOVR at all was to experience it for myself. Since I was a child, I had dreamed of riding on fast animals. Think a cheetah. Having done it here, it's fun, but it's a lot more terrifying than I thought it would be!"
When Alicia mentioned the Gardener class, the gears turned in Josh's mind. He had received a Type Mod for a banking error in his favor not long ago. Devs had given it to him in exchange for correcting the thousands of erroneously-received BYTES that had appeared in his inventory. "So this means I could make any PokƩmon I wanted big, so long as I have a Grass-type Type Mod? Might have to put those plans of getting Zapdos DNA on hold..." Alicia Westfield

Alicia smiled a bit. Both at how Josh clearly bit off more than he could chew at that moment, and how he tried to take the edge off things by changing the direction of the conversation. She decided to not point out that he had already told her about this a while back when they had a moment playing poker at the Firewater Saloon. It was a welcome distraction regardless. āIām a little dizzy just thinking about it myself.ā she admitted when Josh realized just what that kind of speed entailed. āYou need either amazing reflexes, or complete trust in your Pokemonās ability to react appropriately at those speeds. I have faith in my own reflexes for the most partā¦ but not that much faith.āAnd then Josh mentioned Type Mods to her, and she looked down, a pensive expression on her face. Those were a thing? She had missed that somewhere along the line. āIā¦ I donāt know? I donāt see any logical reason for it to not work. But at the same time I donāt know how a Type Mod would work exactly. Is it an overlay? Or does it actually replace a typing? Is there a functional difference between the two states as far as UNOVR is concerned? ā¦ This feels like a question for the forums.āIt was certainly a thought provoking questionā¦ Josh Devlin

Enhanced by the lightning storm's presence, the Zebstrika was faster than a real-world cheetah. He knew from his experience with traditional PokƩmon games that electric PokƩmon were absurdly fast. "It was just... more than I was expecting is all," the now-calm rider replied. "I do have a reaction time under naught-point-three. It's what playing lots of video games gets you. I think it's more physical in nature. It's going to take a lot of training and getting used to going so fast before I can reliably do it. And this isn't the best place to practice yet. You have any suggestions?" he asked. "I haven't been to every zone in Asper yet."
When asked about Type Mods, Josh shrugged. "How about we go into the help menu and find out together?" If they went into their menus, they would find that type mods were only a mechanical change and not a cosmetic one; applying an electric Type Mod to a Ponyta, for instance, would not change its appearance. Mechanically, though, it would make a difference. "It says here that there are two types of Type Mods: primary and secondary. Primary is used to replace the existing type, while secondary adds a type or replaces the second type if they already have one. They're pretty rare, though. I got mine from an event."

Alicia hummed softly, before blushing a bit in embarrassment as she realized something. āUmā¦ I think youāve seen more areas of UNOVR than I haveā¦āAlmost all of her big trips she had either done so in tow with Josh or she bumped into him along the way. Add in that her big level grind session for her Pokemon that one time had occupied her forā¦ quite some timeā¦ She hadnāt had much chance to explore as much as she intended. āAlicia, as it turns out, is easily distracted.ā Tikani mused with a chuckle. āI am not.ā the Gardener firmly denied. The Bayleef looked to Josh with a knowing smirk and a wink. Then the two had gone into the system UI to peer at what the game had on Type Mods readily available. Alicia was content to read the relevant information quietly, letting Josh give voice to the words on his own. Only once he was done did she add her own two cents. āI guess weāll both be looking into type mods. I can see having a spare Grass Type Mod coming in handy. Since itās a replacement and not an overlay, mechanically it should work as you think it would. As well as be helpful for people trying to unlock a lot of classes.āJosh Devlin

"Admittedly, exploring UNOVR is a lot easier if you saddle up like I do," Josh half-teased Alicia. Walking everywhere was tiring, and some of UNOVR's terrain was pretty rough. Ostellia especially. Asper was mostly flat, but it had enough hills to wear one out if they tried to travel too far on their own. Alicia was right, though; they had spent quite a bit of time together. She may as well have been a permanent member of his party, with how much time they spent logged in together.
As the conversation turned toward Type Mods once they had reduced their speed to a more reasonable level, Josh nodded in agreement. "It's a lot of BYTES to invest, though... in getting Gardener maxed. I wouldn't want to invest that kind of money until I max my other class first. The prospect of making some PokƩmon really big like Tikani is nice, though. Imagine... being able to strap a saddle to a Jolteon. How fast you'd go." Jolteon were well-known for being fast as lightning, but were too small for even a child to sit on. If a Bayleef could be ridden by a Gardener, then surely a Jolteon could be, too.
"Ever thought about buying me a Flying Type Mod, Josh?" Raiden asked. "I bet it'd make me faster, too!"
Josh rolled his eyes. "Why do all the ultra-fast PokƩmon have to have Ground weaknesses?" He asked to no one in particular.

Alicia rolled her eyes at the tease, blowing a quick tuft of pink hair back. āI think too much speed ends the sense of adventure too quickly. The journey means more to me than the destination. When it comes time for everything to be backtracking, thatās when Iāll stay mounted up longer and longer.āThe rough terrain just added to things for her. Of course, with enough mental calculations even that could be mitigated to some degree. Though she did quirk an eyebrow at Joshās comment about how expensive it was to max Gardener on a lark. āUhā¦ hereās an FYI. Iāve not spent a single BYTE on my class at all yet. The size up comes straight out of the box just for dipping in when you need or want it. Though when you inevitably wipe out on that theoretical Jolteon taking a turn too quickly, Iāll be there to have a chuckle at your expense.āThe pinkette flashed a smirk to Josh at her own remark, before sighing softly at the ever present danger for speedsters in Pokemon. āIt makes logical sense. Trip on a rock or hit a pit and you go tail over head.āāHigh speeds in general just sound like a disaster waiting to happen...ā Tikani added from the veritable peanut gallery. āAnd that you need a real Rock Head to survive one of those crashes.āJosh Devlin

Alicia did have a point; it was harder to appreciate the world when it was flying by at the speed a PokƩmon mount could reach. Especially late game and endgame ones. From the pool of available legendary PokƩmon, there was one Josh already had his eyes on: Galarian Zapdos. Which it wasn't his favorite, they were blistering fast. "Wonder if there's a data mine out there of all the overworld speeds of PokƩmon. That would help a lot." Even if it existed, it was probably hard to locate due to likely being against TOS.
Alicia's quick quip got a laugh out of Josh. "That's good to know, but the issue is you can't equip a second class simultaneously without maxing your first one first. I can't afford to give up Ares' extra damage... and damage from other fire PokƩmon." The last remark got another chuckle out of him, almost like a living laughtrack. "I'm already struggling with adapting to Raiden's speed. And I haven't even had him sprint yet. Gotta work up to a Jolteon's speed, you know?"
Tikani's concerns were valid, too, particularly when Josh sharply reined Raiden around a steel spire coming up a bit more quickly than he anticipated. Even with reduced pain thresholds, a crash into anything would still cause thumping pain. "That can be fixed with a cocoon saddle," he rebuffed the Bayleef. "Ever seen one? They're common on dragons." Alicia Westfield

Alicia hummed softly at that, before shaking her head. āIf itās anything like some of the Pokedex entries, I doubt that it would be actually reliable. Because some of the claims that thing makes feel utterly bogus.āAnd then she winced at the tidbit that Josh mentioned. About how you could only have one class at a time until you maxed the previous one. āRiiiiight. Forgot about that. Since even the basic classes are worth keeping around. Maybe I should start funneling some BYTEs towards mine to start benefiting off itā¦āāWith how much you pushed yourself to get us into top shape, Iām actually surprised to hear you forgot about another avenue to get better.ā Tikani mused, glancing back at Alicia. The pinkette grimaced again at the soft verbal jab. āIām not used to that being an option, okay?ā Alicia retorted to her Bayleef. āSure, sureā¦ā Tikani flashed a smirk at that, before chuckling. Especially when Josh and Raiden had to make a sharp course correction to avoid proving the Bayleef right. āCanāt say Iāve ever heard of such a thing.āāSame here.ā Alicia echoed, looking thoughtful. āThe naming does lead to ideas, but most scenarios where Iāve seen or read about someone riding a dragon just kind ofā¦ hand-wave that annoying detail out of the way. Or falling out of the saddle at a certain moment because of the oversight is the pointā¦ā
Perhaps she should look more into such a thing. Especially if she was going to get herself a Noivern at some point. Or some other large and powerful flier.

The answer to that question depended on whether UNOVR had PokƩmon speeds set per species, or there was a range they fell between, much like real-life creatures. Were it the latter, getting the fastest PokƩmon in the game would be far more of an ordeal than it needed to be. Could Josh, one day, handle speeds so fast. "Don't disagree there. I'd be plaster on the wall if the Galarian Zapdos I'm after could actually do a buck eighty in-game."
He couldn't help but laugh at Tikani and Alicia bickering with one another before getting back to the topic at hand. A lightning strike forced the wannabe racer to rein his PokƩmon out of the way if he didn't want to get engulfed by flames from brush igniting. "Not just for dragons. For birds, too. Imagine the bank angles some of those PokƩmon can get to. If you've never seen one before, they have material you zip up that wraps all the way to your waist." He hesitated for a moment before thinking of an illustration. "You play Magic? The card game?" Alicia Westfield

āā¦ A ābuck eightyāā¦?ā Alicia muttered under her breath in curiosity. What did money have to do with speed? It wasnāt like the theoretical Galarian Zapdos was going to be part of a delivery service. And even in that context the phrase didnāt make sense. Nevermind that one dollar and- It clicked suddenly, and Alicia palmed her face. Then the lightning struck and the flames roared off to the side. She readily directed Tikani away from it, and the Bayleef was more than happy to comply. āIām more imagining the gees that would occur on those angles.ā Alicia commented at the mention of bird Pokemon. āAnd that sounded about what I was expecting.āShe then looked down at the mention of the card game. āIāve seen the commercials for some of the recent sets. And I am aware it exists. But I havenāt played.āShe never had anyone to play with. And how would a recluse like her ever get herself to a local game store? What worth were the cards to her? The only way to see just how fast a Galarian Zapdos would be in game was to get one and saddle one up. That would, of course, take a prohibitive amount of time. Getting the PokƩmon itself would take quite a bit of time on its own, working his way up the Arena ladder to the point where matches would even be worth the Arena Points needed. Second, there was raising the juvenile legendary PokƩmon into an adult. If his instincts on them were correct, they were different from other PokƩmon, requiring more attention, preferential treatment, and the like. He hoped they would be more like ordinary PokƩmon.
Third, crafting a saddle would require Josh to be an an extraordinarily high level. The way he was progressing, how long would it take him? Would it be on a scale of months, or years?
"Long as your threshold settings are low, the g-forces should be too bad," Josh concluded. Little did he know that there would be no soaring thousands of feet above the surface. Perhaps one day, there would be a zone in UNOVR where free flight was possible.
"...Not even on TTS?" Josh asked. "Strategy games like that seem right up your alley. Might need to leave you a message. I'll be taking a break from UNOVR for a few days coming up." Before he could continue with the meandering discussion, a pop-up reminded Josh that the last thing he needed to do was click that Sprint button, and he could ride his Zebstrika anywhere that the game would let him. "Is the final sprint all you have left, too?" Josh asked.
