FREEFORM BATTLE
A lot had happened in the months that the devs were gone. Josh was impressed at how self-sustaining the world was, though with them back, he expected there would be a lot of changes to come. Ostellia as its was wouldn't last too much longer, he surmised. And battling in a place like this wouldn't fly were it to be restored to its original splendor. With a desire to get stronger before heading into LEVEL-4, wherever it may be, he sent his best friend on the server a Direct Challenge request.
DIRECT MESSAGE> A lot has happened in the past few months, and I'm looking to set my foot in some mid-game dungeons. Let's brawl. Bring your best six Pokémon and prepare for a long match.

It had been a long time, hadn’t it…? Alicia nodded softly as she thought it through. It had been some time since Sector Jarzick as well. Since the disaster that she had managed to make right. Since she’d spent some more time with the one she met there hammering their way through a Tree of Worms legacy. How much had Josh grown since then? How much had she grown? Ronda dropped to all fours beside her, smiling to Alicia. The hero-in-the-making grinned, sitting astride her Cyclizar. Opening her reply window, she tapped on the keyboard presented to her. DIRECT MESSAGE> You’re on, Josh. I’m en route. I’ll show you how powerful we really are this time.Maybe that would be intimidating for the scout given that she had brought him to the limit when she had only three teammates. And one of them had basically been freshly caught. But that was for Josh to deal with, as Alicia grabbed Ronda’s handles. ”Call the pace.” the Cyclizar said simply. ”… Gun it.” Alicia replied. She was going to have to get used to speed sooner than later. Tikani’s new boon was going to demand all the endurance regarding speed she could gain. Ronda let out a whoop and tore off at full speed. After all, he wasn’t going to be in the fighting team this time, so he could burn all of his energy in the trip. Though he was a bit sad that Alicia wasn’t going to have him fight this time. But soon enough, he’d prove himself. Once they had arrived, she’d dismount and recall him, before holding two Pokeballs out. With a toss of her hand, she released Sylvene and Yggdril into the prepared battlefield. The Pidgeotto took to the skies. But… the giant, syrupy apple just sat there for the moment. It looked like the occupants were not particularly inclined to emerge until it was time for them to actually do something. ——————————————————————— {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Josh was jealous of Alicia's dramatic entrance. "Holy... you're level ten already?!" he asked, his friend already hurling Sylvene and Yggdril toward the arena's center. To keep things fair, Josh took the first two Poké Balls from the left side of his belt, keeping things "random" for their battle and not take advantage of seeing her first-round picks. Ares and Luna, a Charmeleon and Purrloin, stared down the dragon-type. "Well, this doesn't look good for me to win," he sheepishly admitted, knowing that Alicia had at small but critical level advantage.
True to form, the purple cat zoomed toward Yggdril at blinding speed in an effort to FAKE OUT the Hydrapple -- a Pokémon the trainer was not familiar with. It looked like a grass-type, but Josh didn't want to find out what its capabilities were. Focus-firing the multi-headed Pokémon, he didn't hold back a thing. The INFERNO cloud threatened to bake Alicia's Pokémon alive!

”After falling in Jarzick… I went a little crazy on the rebound. I want what happened there to NEVER happen again if I can help it.” Alicia answered Josh’s jealous exclamation. ”And lets just say I also had other reasons to want to rush to a faster mount.”She then uttered a sharp whistle as Ares and Luna appeared. She did quirk an eyebrow at the Purrloin, that was a new addition as far as she knew. But she had to get her one of her syrpents to wake up. Josh was going to be quick on the draw. ”Yggdril! One of you, up and at ‘em! PROTECT!””Alright alright!” “We’re up!” “Keep the noise down!” “Slave Driver!” “She’s not that bad, come on now.”The veritable cacophony of voices rang out from the Hydrapple at nearly the same time as five heads emerged, shaking themselves. And then the gleaming hexagonal barrier started shimmering over the apple and the actual syrpents. Alas, the Hydrapple’s tendency towards lethargy was somewhat costly. Luna got in before it fully formed, knocking one of the syrpents for a loop. But before she could get more hits in, the multi-headed nature of Hydrapple kicked in. Even with the main head disabled, the other heads could immediately pick up the slack. And so, the PROTECT fully formed in spite of the flinch, and the INFERNO found no purchase in the immediacy. ”Heckin’ hot!” “We sure that’s a Charmeleon and not a tiny Charizard?” “Grow up, babies! It’s a little singe!”Seemed the heat wasn’t going to stop the banter of the Hydrapple now that it was awake. But while that was happening, causing Yggdril to likely be the center of attention, Sylvene swooped in on the Charmeleon. Not to attack Ares yet, but that INFERNO was a big deal. And so Sylvene used a low sweep of her wings to kick up dust in her wake. Doing a fast fly-by to buzz Ares’ head, Sylvene moved to use a SAND ATTACK to try and blind him. ——————————————————————— Sylvene - (SAND ATTACK) Try to blind your opponent Yggdril - (PROTECT) Make yourself the Center Of Attention AP: 4 {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: Nicked Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Riding a faster mount made sense to Josh; it seemed Alicia came to the same conclusion that he did about how useful going fast could be. "Guess I'll have to go into the Surge Steppes again and finish this level off so I can keep up with you!" he quipped, the roaring flames dying down enough for them to hear each other again.
The sudden PROTECT was timed perfectly, deflecting part of the heat blast back toward Ares and making even him sweat. The severe attack had put a great deal of stress on the Charmeleon, forcing him to use a much less stamina-intensive follow-up attack. Raising his claws and snorting embers, the fire-type ran toward the Hydrapple, SLASHING across its many heads in an effort to leave gashes across each face. If he had his way, the juices within the grass and dragon-type would fly into its many sets of eyes.
Luna, in the meantime, would zip behind Yggdril while Ares hacked away at the front of Alicia's newer partner. They had been so distracted that neither one saw Sylvene's SAND-ATTACK coming, Ares kneeling in pain as the wave of dirt threatened to snuff his tail out.

”Ey! Back off, bucko!” “Personal SPACE please!” “It’s crammed enough in this apple!” “Not the face, NOT THE FACE!”Yggdril was a clamor of voices as Ares closed in on their largely immobile form. The syrpents tried to veer away from Ares’ gleaming claws, but they were only partially successful. ”My eyes!” “Who turned out the lights!?” “Ya gun pay for that one!””Focus!” Alicia called. ”Carpet the area with SYRUP BOMBs!””Gimme a sec!” “Off ya go!” “A one, a two, a one-two-three!”Finally recovering, one of the syrpents grabbed Ares by the scruff of his neck and tossed him off the Hydrapple. Then the five heads started spitting up condensed globs of syrup into the air. But Luna did not go unnoticed. While the chaos with Ares and Yggdril was going on, the eagle-eyed bird was keeping an eye on the feline swinging around to the back. ”Not on my watch…” the bird declared, blurring into motion. She aimed to cut the Purrloin off with a high speed QUICK ATTACK to cover Yggdril’s back and get out before the SYRUP BOMBs landed. ——————————————————————— Sylvene - (QUICK ATTACK) Start your move before your opponent’s lands Yggdril - (SYRUP BOMB) Create an Environmental Effect AP: 8 {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: Fair Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Ares had been immobilized by the SYRUP BOMBS detonating on top of him, hissing at Yggdril after finding himself stuck to the pavement next to an abandoned vehicle. In his anger, his tail began to burn brightly, looking like he was able to bathe the Hydrapple in fire again. Josh gave it some thought, though; why wasn't the Pokémon weak to fire? Those many heads... was it a dragon-type? Smirking as he found a chink in Yggdril's armor, he gave his order to the Charmeleon:
"Ares, DRAGON BREATH."
His red tail-flame turned a white-purple color, able to sit up enough to belch a spray of holy fire toward Yggdril. It would have left the grass-type in a devastating pincer attack were it not for Sylvene coming to the rescue, ramming into the smaller cat and knocking her out of the way. Bruised and battered, the stubborn cat was on her last legs, but refused to give in.
Glowing with the blinding light of EVOLUTION, Luna turned from a bipedal cat to a new form twice her previous size: a quadrupedal hunter of brutal strength and efficiency. She sprung into the air after the retreating Pidgeotto in an effort to pounce and rake across her back with a vicious NIGHT SLASH.
All of a sudden, a strong and distinct stench of oil and gasoline began to pervade the area...

”Figured it out, huh?” Alicia commented upon hearing Josh order a DRAGONBREATH. ”Yggdril, DRAGON PULSE!””On it!” “Counter time!” “You got this!”Yggdril’s main head summoned up their own draconic might in response to Ares’ tail flame igniting. Waves condensed in her parting maw, as she unleashed the pulse just as the flames started washing over them. ”YOW!” “OKAY THAT SMARTS!” “HURRY IT UP YA SLURPING LANDLADY!” “WE’RE FRYING HERE!”The main head growled as her compatriots complained, but her pulse began and broke apart Ares’ holy flames, countering the otherwise overwhelming power with stronger bursts of the same energy. But while this was happening, a Miracle was occurring at the same time. ”This cannot be my life right now!” Sylvene yelped as she looked behind her. Just in time for Luna’s new figure to crash onto her back and rend gashes across it. Caught off guard by the sudden surge of strength, the Pidgeotto spiraled down to the ground. Wounded, but not out just yet. But with the Dark type now becoming A Problem, Alicia was considering bringing someone more powerful in. Sylvene, though, was unwilling to yield. Her spin picked up speed until she was more pirouetting on purpose, before she flung her wings out to pull up at the last minute. Angling herself with a death-defyingly sharp bank, the bird pulled herself around to focus on Luna again. With gravity-assisted boosts in speed, she rushed towards Luna with the intent of banking away at the last second to leave a GUST to engulf, strike, and briefly obscure her vision. ——————————————————————— Sylvene - (GUST) Pull off an unbelievable stunt. Luna didn't need to wait for Josh to issue orders; the savage feline knew exactly what to do. With the wounded bird pinned, the Liepard had just enough time to add gash to slash, a flurry of FURY SWIPES aimed at deepening the wounds. The sudden swerve and GUST sent Luna flying into Ares, who was already in danger. Gasoline from the now-ruptured tank dripped on top of his red body. It only took seconds for a single drop to land on his tail. Flinching, he rolled to his feet to try to crawl out from beneath the vehicle... only for his tail to touch the underside of its fuel tank.
Kaboom.
Both Luna and Area were in range of the explosive blast, automatically withdrawn to their Poké Balls from what would have been a lethal blow if it wasn't just a video game. If Pokémon were real, that would have been the end of them.
Shielding his face from burning shrapnel headed his way, Josh waited for the fireworks show to end before calling forth his next two Pokémon: Goroh the Cyclizar and Granmarg the Mudsdale.

A lot of things happened all at once. Sylvene launched Luna into Ares, the Hydrapple managed to avoid being immediately fainted by the flames. And then Ares’ tail got too close to something that it should have stayed away from. Alicia winced as the shockwave from the explosion washed over her. And also her most recent, present, ally. The five heads of Yggdril started babbling as the explosion had enough force to start tilting their apple. Many declarations of denial trampled over each other as a pair of tails popped out to try and recover. But to no avail, the Hydrapple toppled all the same. Four of the heads were knocked out by the fall. ”That’s all folks…!” the last head chimed, swinging himself like a white flag before collapsing as well and being returned to their pokeball. ”Great job, Yggdril.” Alicia replied to her syrpents. She had already decided who she would being in next, but Josh’s choices just reinforced her decision. ”Nushi, let ‘er rip with Aqua Jet!””Let’s go!” Nushi answered as he emerged from his pokeball. He wasted no time, swimming through the air as freely as his ocean home. Sighting Granmarg, he charged at the Mudsdale like a bullet. Meanwhile, Sylvene took the chance to rise high again, circling like a bird of prey. She was going to give it one final hurrah with a diving TWISTER at Goroh once the Cyclizar moved to support his ally. It would be the last thing she did this fight, much as it irked her. She was wounded pretty badly by Luna, and only had fumes left to offer. ——————————————————————— Sylvene - (TWISTER) Bide your Time Nushi - (AQUA JET) Use a Priorty Move AP: 16 {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: Critical Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Granmarg may have lacked speed, but his stamina was nearly bottomless. Rearing in pain as water from the AQUA JET froze in the orifices of his muddy skin, his hooves slammed and cracked the pavement beneath him, a local EARTHQUAKE rattling the entire battleground. Windows shattered, their glass shards raining down near Nushi as another vehicle explosion overloaded his trainer's hearing for a critical moment.
Goroh was ready for the shockwave, using the momentum of his QUICK ATTACK in tandem with his partner's attack to springboard toward Sylvene. His wheels were spinning fast enough to create a mini-vortex that would mandate both strength and speed if the ailing Pidgeotto wanted to escape the fate of being made roadkill.

”Ah-wawawa!” Nushi cried out as the earth quaked and shards of glass from condemned buildings exploded outward and feel towards him. He flailed and swam as fas he could, but he couldn’t quite escape the debris. Several shards stabbed into his body, and he was going to start losing HP quickly if something wasn’t done. But Veluza had tricks up their non-existant sleeves. Tricks that Alicia got a first hand hint of. She grimaced at the thought of doing it, but Nushi both needed to shed some weight and pick up the pace. ”Nushi… FILLET AWAY!””Slice and dice!” the Veluza replied… as he suddenly sliced himself with some Aqua Cutters in order to shed the unneeded mass. With a now much slimmer, and cartoonishly rendered (to preserve game ratings), body the psychic fish zipped about with speeds that he originally only got close to with active Aqua Jet use, which he put to use trying to help Sylvene. But it was too late. He started his interception too slowly, and Sylvene didn’t try to avoid the oncoming attack. With a crash from the quake-assisted jump, the bird was sent spiraling down again, completely uncontrolled this time until Alicia found the chance to recall her. So instead, the fish made to keep Goroh distracted with his vastly increased speed. Because he knew who was coming out next, with Granmarg on the field. Alicia then smiled, as she knew who she was going to call out next. ”You’re up Tikani. GIGA DRAIN!”Alicia’s starter appeared in a flash, as the Bayleef immediately locked on to Granmarg. His vast stamina was something that needed to be chipped away at as fast as possible, if they were going to bring Giyun and Venex in safely. ——————————————————————— Tikani - (GIGA DRAIN) Use a healing/ draining move Nushi - (FILLET AWAY) Use a multi-stat boosting move [Atk/Sp.Atk/Speed] AP: 20 {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: KO Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Condition: Fair Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

At last, momentum was back on Josh's side, Goroh wheeling down Sylvene and giving him the speed advantage. As much momentum as the ground-type attack added to the Cyclizar's, it still hurt, leaving both Pokémon in poor shape and their beat attacks on cooldown. It was a huge issue for Josh, as he had opened the door for the Veluza to FILLET AWAY safely. Not even the Cyclizar could keep up now. Tikani was also Alicia's ace. "...Wow, you're good," Josh sighed, even the quick thinker stumped.
There really was no way out, was there? Unless...
"Hold, Granmarg," Josh ordered. "Protect Goroh." If the Veluza wanted to get to the Cyclizar, it would have to go through the equine first... and it wouldn't be able to do so without invoking a nasty COUNTER. Goroh had his own nasty plots, too, staying behind the tougher Pokémon before making a sudden break for Tikani. His rear wheel screeched against the pavement, burning permanent rubber into it as they spun fast enough to create a vertical whirlwind. If the physical motion of the Bayleef being wheeled via RAPID SPIN didn't sting, then the moving air surrounding it would. If done quickly enough, it would leave the horse with enough energy to execute its plan and turn the match around!

Alicia knew that stance. It had defeated her the last time, allowing Granmarg to utterly annihilate Venex in their first battle. But things were different this time. Currently, her flier could actually hear and understand her. ”Keep your distance! AQUA CUTTER!” Alicia called. She left Tikani to her own devices for the moment, trusting her first partner. Nushi veered away, leaving Goroh alone for the moment to focus his fire on the stocky Mudsdale. Alicia grinned. As long as she could keep someone hammering on Granmarg, even he would fall. And if those hits were constant Super Effective strikes? All the faster. Meanwhile, Tikani’s leaves sparked with electricity briefly and ever so slightly. She could see the Cyclizar coming a mile away. She was different now… Ever since she came back from the Everworld, or so Alicia shared with her, she was overall faster. Her mind could think faster when she needed it to. Her legs could push her to rates she had never dreamed of before. The Bayleef wondered, briefly, if the cause of her demise was so powerful that it engraved itself upon her soul. But only a moment. But she tracked Goroh throughout his charge. Maybe she would unnerve him with how she locked her eyes on his directly. But Alicia had asked her to try to… downplay her improvements. That she wasn’t sure when, if ever, she wanted to unveil what had come upon the Bayleef. At the very least, if she was going to call it out, she wanted it to be a stunning spectacle. Tikani could understand that. And she agreed, this was something that should be made into a stunning occasion. So she pretended she couldn’t react in time to evade. She braced herself, letting Goroh crashed into her. She twisted her body as she did, flexing. Shoving the Cyclizar just off course. And then she shoved. Wheels squealed as Tikani, baring the brunt of the RAPID SPIN with a grimace, carried Goroh with her. Despite their similar sizes, in part to Alicia’s class, Tikani had leverage and muscle mass on her side. The Bayleef let out a bellow as she moved to BODY SLAM him into a building wall. ——————————————————————— Tikani - (BODY SLAM) Try to Crush your opponent Nushi - (AQUA CUTTER) Consult External Data [Prior battle] AP: 24 {PARTY}Tikani (Bayleef) [3/3/4] Condition: Good Sylvene (Pidgeotto) [3/3/2] Condition: KO Giyun (Duraludon) [3/3/4] Nushi (Veluza) [3/3/2] Condition: Fair Yggdril (Hydrapple) [2/3/3] Condition: KO Venex (Naganadel) [3/3/4] Josh Devlin

Alicia and her team had learned the Mudsdale's tactics, the Veluza swimming out of range. Dropping the counterattack, the horse would go for a more direct strike, and a powerful but unwieldy one at that. Whinnying in pain as he charged through the water-type attack, the stout horse made a wide turn toward Alicia's Pokémon and suddenly bucked, looking to slam his heavy hooves into the Veluza with a nasty MEGA KICK. The strain of such an attack proved to be the ground-type's downfall, leaving Josh with only three Pokémon on his belt.
The BODY SLAM likewise spelled the end for the Cyclizar, but not before making one last desperation attack: with a flick of its powerful tail, the beginner-friendly ride Pokémon attempted to use the leverage to fling Tikani away in a BREAKING SWIPE. The heroic effort sapped the last of Goroh's strength.
And then there were two: Nitro and Izoni. The Skiddo looked nervous to be staring down such strong Pokémon, while the Naganadel pointed her sting at the Veluza, MARKING her.
Josh himself looked frustrated with himself. "I hate to admit it, but I think the level advantage isn't the reason you're winning," he said with a disgusted look on his face.
