Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

UNOVR had had so many intentional quirks already that Nero hadn't initially questioned the abrupt end to the quest in Mistra, assuming his own system might have glitched slightly and messed up the ending but that it was otherwise supposed to have played out that way. It was only later when he'd heard other people talking about it that he'd realised just how odd it was, especially with those strange gifts that hadn't been explained and the thing that had happened to Bunya... But then honestly, he still wasn't sure if it was all a long con or not. Reddit seemed to think it was, but whatever man, he'd gotten two new Pokemon out of it and his avatar hadn't died, so let's just call it a win. He was out here in the familiar early areas in an attempt to test them out a little in battle, though had so far not come across any wild Pokemon to train with. The Misty Timberlands were like this sometimes, seemingly devoid of life like a dream world where you could chase imaginary movements into a deeper and deeper abyss... It was as frustrating as it was fun sometimes, but Nero had come prepared. First of all, he'd sent his Yanma up above the tree line like a remote controlled helicopter to try and seek out signs of life. When she'd come back with nothing to report, he'd climbed a tree himself and looked down from above like a bird scanning for prey from its perch. When that too had failed, he'd decided to take a leaf out of the Timberland's book and try an altogether more mystical method, closing his eyes and trying to sense something out there through the darkness... some sort of sign that they were not in fact alone...

Sure, this was a game, and the rules of the real world didn't strictly apply, but still, it was weird, right? There was no-one else around here to see him at least, which emboldened him enough to try whistling into the darkness too, wondering if that might attract something... Funnily enough, the echo that came back to him sounded a little unusual actually... Frowning but still not opening his eyes, he whistled again, and sure enough, there was a different twang to the response. It came back... not exactly louder or quicker but harder almost... like it had... bounced off of something? Maybe he was imagining it. These woods played tricks on you after all, and he'd heard people talk about all sorts of glitches out here. He couldn't help but try one more time though, this last whistle again sounding different to the last, and somehow Nero knew what this one meant. His eyes flashed open all of a sudden, hand already on the golden Pokeball in his inventory as he was aware before his eyelids could even shift that he would no longer be alone when they opened.

Thankfully, it was just a little thing, and not much of a threat at all, so his delayed acknowledgement of it wasn't any sort of problem. He'd been looking for training fodder anyway, and so his brand new Kabuto was sent out to face the creature just a moment later, the small crab scuttling forwards towards the enemy it had found. Much like the Aerodactly that Nero had also received, this Kabuto seemed very young, as though it had hatched rather than simply been revived as an adult version of itself. That probably made sense though, right? When they cloned DNA in the real world, the thing came out as a baby not an adult, right? Dolly the sheep? Anyway, it didn't matter, it just meant the little Pokemon needed a bit of additional training before it would be useful in battle. It ignored Nero's first few commands, too curious of the world around it, but eventually acknowledged the voice saying, "Scratch it!" coming from behind. A little claw did indeed strike out towards the Dewpider, a little unsure as to why it was doing this, but happy to learn on the job all the same.

Was it strong despite its apparent mental age? He'd assumed the childishness would mean it was Level 1 but maybe not? Or was this more to do with him, Nero's own player level affecting the strength of all of the Pokemon in his possession, even the new ones? Maybe it was a bit of both - this was a rare find after all so it made sense that it would have some better stats than others. Still, as Nero watched it slash away at the Dewpider once more, he couldn't help but wonder how much stronger it would be when he evolved it too... He'd been thinking of doing that soon anyway, hoping that would help it to mature faster too since he wasn't much of a babysitter. Just think of how could a scratch from the blades of a Kabutops would be, when Kabuto's little claws were this strong already...

He had a decent handful of Pokemon already, and his Yanma was a good enough bug for him for now. This had been a chance to see Kabuto in action, and it had worked as a test for that. The little fossil Pokemon was great already, a strong little battler even now with very little practice on the field. The crab scuttled back to Nero now that the battle was over, the trainer petting its smooth shell with an amused smile like it was a dog coming over for attention instead. It was kind of cute like this. But eh, he wanted power, not cute. A few buttons were pressed on the user interface in front of him, and soon the evolution menu was up, Kabuto highlighted on it, ready to be acted on. With a confident click, Nero set the wheels in motion, the small crab glowing and then growing rapidly, revealing an awesome looking Kabutops that had Nero beaming with excitement. Awww yes! This was the sort of Pokemon he needed, how cool was that?! He had been about to close out the menu to focus on his new beast when he noticed another option highlighted, Yanma could evolve? Oh yeah, it got an evolution in Sinnoh, didn't it? And actually, it's evolution was pretty cool too... Alright, why not? Might as well get his team looking as badass as it could as soon as it could. Another few buttons, and the Yanma still out of its ball from it's earlier attempt at being a spy helicopter was soon covered in light as well. A far larger and more vicious dragonfly was left behind, hovering beside Nero's new assassin crab. "Wicked..." he murmured to himself with a smile as he stared at the two powerhouses in front of him. Just wait until he got a chance to show these off to people. He'd be an intimidating force to be reckoned with in no time.
