It was already the middle of summer, and Josh needed a laptop. After all, if he was going to perform at SpeedGaming Live 2024, he needed a computer to run his tracking equipment on, as well as interfacing with multiworld. There was going to be a four-player, two-team Zelda and Metroid multiworld shown on stream for opening day, and in prime time, at that. Without a laptop, though, he wouldn't be able to run that kind of software on it. And his laptop had a serious issue. Worse yet, it was just outside warranty. He had no recourse with the manufacturer. He was going to have to get it fixed.
Searching for local computer companies that were reputable was trouble. There was one in Peoria that caught his eye: a small startup by the name of Tech 'n' Code Lass. Though it recently entered the market, the overwhelmingly positive reviews drew him to at least inquire about it. He went to their website and initiated a chat with their representative, describing his problem:
Good afternoon. I've got a Dell laptop that's just outside the one-year warranty, and it crashes every time I plug in a USB device. I've never had any problems with it before. Attached is a screenshot of the crash screen. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you!
As he waited for a response, he grabbed one of his old Nintendo consoles and booted up a wildly popular indie roguelike that remained a cult classic years after its release. "Now what was I doing on this run?" he said to himself, his eyes shifting between the two screens...

Helen hummed softly, wiping her brow and happy with another job well done. Some unfortunate soul had tried some DIY regarding some new components without really paying full attention. Amazing how a fan pointing the wrong way could cause so such critical issues. But every PC needed to be cooled to one degree or another, so the error was a big issue. Running some stress testing to make sure the machine ran well and didn’t need any other kind of repair showed that she was done here. She’d cut the poor guy some slack on the bill. Partially because it was a simple fix and partially because she could really afford to. When she first got into this, she had no idea she could get far enough ahead to be able to afford some luxuries. And hey, the good publicity was its own payment in some ways. Like right now. Her rig gave another work chime at her. Someone else made contact via her website. No rest for the wicked, hmm? Hopefully she wouldn’t need to inconvenience this person having them send their machine in. The things she could resolve over text or a quick face-to-face call were the nicest. And then she took a look at the message. Oh boy. This was going to be a doozy, she could already feel it. Flicking a setting to inform her prospective customer they were connected, she began typing rapidly. Every time, huh? So we can skip the ‘turn it off and on again’ step, good to know. There’s a number of things this could be, so I’d like to ask a few questions to try and narrow it down. Does this happen when any USB device is plugged in, or just one specific one? If it’s the latter, does any other device freeze similarly when the device in question is plugged in?“This… is going to be a thing…” Helen muttered in her mousy way. Hopefully her customer would appreciate the small attempt at humor at the start? ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Josh laughed when he read the agent's reply. That was one of the reasons he liked the small startups: unlike in a call center environment like the one he had worked in for a few years, they didn't have to abide by a quality rubric, from what he could tell. This agent was a lot more human. He had been on both sides of the customer service interaction before, and the interactions were more productive when there was no QA form involved... but that required hiring people who actually cared about their jobs.
It was already clear that this firm cared about its employees.
Yep, we can skip that part. If it helps you, I would consider myself just above medium skill with a computer. Last time I had to troubleshoot my computer, I found that my hard drive space was being eaten up by my antivirus' log file it never ever cleaned out since I got the machine. Had to use WizTree to locate the file and delete it. It goes without saying that a 735 GB log file is a bit... excessive. Anyway, your question. I've tried three different USB devices: an external hard drive, an SD card reader, and even a brand-new flash drive that's never been used before. As soon as I plug them in, I get the same crash. Same screen, all three devices.
Hopefully this agent would be able to help him get to the bottom of what was going on. If he had to get another new computer, he would have to completely pass on the new core set coming out this fall...

Helen grimaced at the reply. While her humor at least appeared to go over well, the answer she got pointed towards a problem with something on the computer itself rather than a thing with a given USB device. She’d expected as much, but she had to cover her bases. But a log file that bloated as well, along with it being for antivirus specifically… Something had to have gone pear-shaped in the computer’s coding somewhere. The question now was if the coding freak out was due to software or hardware. Unfortunately, she was fairly confident both scenarios would require her to get a look at the Dell in question to see what went awry. Given it was a laptop and not a tower, replacing a damaged component was not likely to be in the cards just based on the general construction mentalities on the types of devices. Unless it was a hard drive issue. Even in laptops you could get to and replace those easily enough. She, however, was suspecting that some subtle malicious programming got in at an earlier point and had been mounting up until now. And given the initial timing mentioned about the start of the file, it seemed to have occurred shortly before this customer had ever laid hands on it. If that was the case, it might’ve been better that it was out of warranty in a roundabout way. A big company would never admit to having sold a faulty machine if they could help it and would yank someone’s metaphorical chain if pressed. Even if they did honor the warranty eventually, she at least would be quite dissatisfied with them for it. And she doubted she would be alone in that mentality I see… I was hoping it was the device rather than the laptop itself. I’ll be frank, this is sounding like a severe issue. I was going to ask if the laptop’s drivers had been updated recently as that can cause some issues here and there in Dell, but the otherwise unrelated distended log file points in another direction entirely. I’ll need to see the laptop in person at this point. Just in case of a worst case scenario, have you backed up your hard drive recently?Helen hated asking that question. Often times the answer was ‘no’. And of course the customer was incapable of backing the hard drive up now since any external hard drive they could reasonably access was connected via, wouldn’t you know, USB... Meaning she’d have to use her own equipment to make it happen. Which would incur an extra charge, though she did try to keep her rates on that task lower than most in the hopes of softening the blow. Of course, if it was virus or malware like she was suspecting, she’d need to eradicate it entirely. As well as back up the recovered files even before she could consider sending the machine back. As well as very strongly recommending that they get rid of whatever backups they did have beforehand lest they reintroduce the problem. After that was an exchange of information so that she could receive the machine and then, hopefully, ship it back once she was done. As well as providing a means for him to keep in touch face-to-face. There was an extremely common choice most “casual” people used, but she made sure to have accounts on a number of such video-call apps in case that one wasn’t an option for one reason or another. It wouldn’t be the first time she worked with someone who’d either had a bad experience with or outright lost access to one or more applications. … She did need to get out more though… if they requested it to be done in house and they were close enough, perhaps she could consider adding house calls to her list of options. She’d… promised herself to try and reconnect with and make the best of ‘Helen Rose’. Maybe this was how she could break the curse she felt saddled with? ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Josh grimaced as he read the agent's answer. Had Dell sold him a lemon? He wouldn't be surprised; this was not the first time he had received a faulty computer from them. Back when Windows Vista was the newest operating system, he had ordered a laptop from them that had all kinds of issues. That one he was able to return under warranty. This one didn't have its issues rear their ugly heads until just after the warranty expired.
He wasn't getting any more computers online. There was this wonderful computer store that had some of the best reviews in Illinois. Bisconti Computers. Their prices were reasonable, their devices came with extended warranties rather than having to buy a warranty, and they often got good deals on their prebuilt machines. He would have taken his computer there, but Bisconti, being in Rockford, was two hours away. This was his best bet. Sighing, he typed up his response.
I didn't think it would be a simple fix when I did some Google-fu before contacting you. Definitely not buying from Dell again. Should have just gotten something local. The hard drive's a copy of the one from my last computer. Made a copy of it when I upgraded from it, so the data should be copiable again in case something goes wrong. It's a year old but better than nothing. You have an appointment calendar I can look at? Second shift makes it tough for me to schedule. If it helps, I am local.
He hoped scheduling would be painless. If he didn't have to be present, he could always schedule the repairs to be done while he was at work. He worked from home, after all, on a separate computer provided by his company.

I usually have devices that need a closer look mailed in. Going along with that, I also have an open door policy on contact requests for status updates and just general communication and transparency. I understand how important someone’s computer can be for them. Especially in the event that it’s used for more than recreation.
That all said, I am open to alternate options that you might find more agreeable given you’re local. You actually caught me at a good time for scheduling as well because of that. Take a look at this.
Quickly taking a snap of her current planned schedule, Helen attached the image to her reply message. While a number of slots were filled, each of the days had an open slot noted simply as (Local, Flex). The appointments that were taken were also noted to be incoming deliveries, rather than hard locked times.
Second shift was no big deal for her. The beauty of being in business for herself was that as long as the customer was happy with the service and result, she had free run of how she handled things. She and the customer she was in contact with were the only people she had to answer to. Helen imagined if she joined up with a big brand name team she’d be a lot more miserable doing this kind of work.
As you can see, I’m in between sets of orders at this time. Means I have openings to take a surprise like this on. So the question now boils down to ‘how soon do you want your laptop looked at?’
Helen made no promises how long it would take to fix the issue. All she had were suspicions after all. But as long as it was a software issue, she was confident she could have this done quickly enough. If it was hardware… she didn’t like the thought of it but the customer would likely have to shell out for a new machine. Everything was up in the air until she got her hands on that Dell.

Thankfully for Josh, this laptop was used only for recreation. He had his employer's VPN software installed on it as a backup, but preferred to use the company-provided computer, as it was optimized for their somewhat archaic servers. The virtual machine he connected to was running Windows 8. In 2024. Get with the times!
He reviewed the schedule and found a late morning appointment that was in the very near term: it seemed to be the next available late morning time slot for any day. He shared the personal information needed for the in-home appointment, such as his address and phone number.
I reviewed the schedule, and the late morning above should work. I do want to warn you that I live with my retired family, and my dad's a bit talkative. I'll move the laptop to the basement so you can work in relative peace, but he might be a bit chatty when you walk in the door. See you in a couple days, then?
Little did he know the connection that their business relationship would blossom into...

Helen nodded softly and took a screen shot of the information she needed so she could refer to it later. As well as having to shove down a sense of trepidation. She never did interact with people directly very well… but she had to adjust to it eventually. Otherwise… she’d never break her self-perceived curse. Of course, she had to assure her customer that the potential complication he mentioned was alright. Even if it meant lying through her teeth… That’ll be fine. It’s hardly the first time someone wants to chatter the ear off anyone who’ll listen. See you then~!And with that… it was just a matter of the appointment day arriving. Once it had come, she loaded her F-150 with what she needed and punched in the data she needed into her phone’s GPS map app. Phone number, fortunately, was just a formality at most times in case she had to make contact and inform of a delay or a rescheduling. That wasn’t the case today though, and Helen arrived at Josh’s residence with a few minutes of time to spare. Deciding it would be best to go now and if needed use the extra time to squash the issue, the tech girl slung her pack over her shoulder and hopped out. Locking her rig, she approached the front door and gave it a series of knocks. Adjusting her little custom cap that she decided to get made in the intervening time, with her start-up’s name on it, she put on a practiced smile as she waited for an answer. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

The tilde at the end of the agent's message was a sign of the human element: a business AI would never have that kind of emotion in it. He smiled, giving the conversation a positive review before submitting it and closing the website.
On the appointment day, Helen would find Josh's residence, located on the northeast side of town. It was quite the property: a 2/3 acre ranch that was spacious but not overwhelming, a 2.5 car garage, and a well-cut front yard. Notably, it was in what was considered the second safest neighborhood in the city of 150,000.
In Josh's hand was an old Nintendo portable that he had been playing while he waited for the representative to arrive. Seeing the cap, he knew the right person had come. "Great to see you," he greeted the young lady, the spiky-haired young man wearing a shirt featuring constellation-like images of Unown, Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. "Josh Devlin. Thanks for your short-term flexibility."
The polite man would offer Helen a can of lemonade in case she was thirsty. "The laptop's actually in my basement, if you don't mind coming down there. I have the air conditioning turned off because my mom and dad are on vacation in Minocqua. It's about eight hours north of here, and the basement stays cool enough that I don't have to run the air unless it's... really hot."
Josh would lead Helen to the cool basement where the laptop was stored. The first things she would see would be a pool table with a tear in its felt, its surface instead filled with boxes of Magic cards. If she looked to her left, she would see a shelf filled with Raikou memorabilia, from plushes to plastic figures to trading cards. "It's set up on my desk, near where the desktop is at," he gestured toward a black, two-piece corner desk that looked like it could have used a dusting, though it wasn't in urgent need of doing so.
If Helen was familiar with "organized chaos", she would recognize that was how Josh preferred to keep his living space. Except for the Magic cards. Those were meticulously organized.

Helen smiled softly, muttering out a quick thank you at the sound of some lemonade. A cool drink was always nice. And coming down to the basement was of course fine. She already knew, after all, but didn’t see a need to comment on it yet. “Pleasure to meet you.” She squeaked out, squeezing the strap of her pack subtly. She had to speak up if she was going to do more in-home appointments! She couldn’t hide a little mic in person! But at the same time she was so nervous… … Wait… hadn’t she heard that voice before? And that name for that matter. There’s no way someone was such a full-on self-insert, was there? She couldn’t imagine doing that for herself. A topic for later, she came here for a job. Organized Chaos was definitely something she was familiar with. She’s seen plenty of it over video calls, and her own place had a touch of it as well. And then she spotted something that seemed a dead-ringer. The shirt she could brush off as him being a fan of the Johto games in particular. But that much memorabilia of Raikou specifically was… pretty difficult to ignore. Unless she was severely misreading the situation… she went on numerous adventures with this person already. “Right then, let’s get a look at this poor baby…” Helen cooed out softly, unpacking the gear she would need and getting to work in short order. Given her suspicion, she used a special keyboard code to change the Dell’s boot-up type to a safe mode. Which would let her explore things while stalling the presumed malicious software from causing any more damage for the moment. “So uh… big fan of the electric Legendary Beast, huh?” The tech asked to pass the time. The curiosity just burned too brightly, and she could handle some chatter while she was working. ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Josh tilted his head to the side a little, leaning a little more closely to try to hear Helen's soft voice. The desktop computer on the other half of the desk where the laptop was set up had another giveaway to her customer's digital identity: the desktop background was a first-person perspective from above a Raikou's back, like one was riding on it. The sides of the image were blurred, presumably from the terrain whipping past. Another detail that might take some thinking to notice was how much of the Raikou's thundercloud was visible. Looking at it made one feel like they were sitting on the charging Beast, being pushed back by the force of the air in their face.
"It's been my favorite Pokémon since I started playing the series," Josh made conversation, pulling out his handheld console and playing a certain poker roguelike on minimum volume as to not distract Helen any more than he already did. "Since I was a kid, I've admired fast animals. With Raikou's lore placing him as a god of speed, he's been atop my favorites list. It's part of why I liked Guardian Signs so much."
Josh stepped away from the computer briefly to get a can of lemonade of his own, letting Helen get to work. It agitated him when he worked on his dad's computer and his dad hovered over his shoulder, watching. It was only courteous to let her work in peace -- but still be close enough to keep her company.

Helen nodded to herself, smiling a bit. That background image was another mark indeed. The Josh she knew had shared wanting to ride on Raikou's back before. Of course he would have this kind of image available to him. Or... maybe he commissioned it from an artist he knew and this was the result? Either way, it was a striking piece that definitely pointed to the connection she was imagining. ... She hadn't thought about it before, but the sight of the thundercloud, and remembering Raikou's overall design, it made a lot of sense why it was in the shot the way it was. "Suicune was the only one I'd particularly cared for out of the trio. But that's not because it's a better design or anything. It's because when I got to Crystal, Suicune was the only one I was able to catch and use. Roaming Legendaries have been my bane for... forever, really. To the point where I don't even bother searching for them when the game implies, or states, that one is out and about. And then chuck my Master Ball at it if I do happen to encounter it, like with Latios in Ruby." Helen admitted with a shrug. She then glared at the Dell with a huff, getting to work on both it and her own machine. "Yup. Nasty bit of coding it seems. This one's going to need a special touch. But good news is that you likely won't have to get a new system." ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

Indeed, it was a commission. A commission that was on a number of things. Were Helen to peer over at an eating table, there would be a pair of playmats at one side, and one of them had that same image printed onto it. The playmat was frayed on its edges, showing how much it had been used over the years. "Even before I got into Pokémon, I loved fast animals. I was one of those naive boys that dreamed of riding on a cheetah." The more he learned about them, the more he learned how impossible it was. The sprinters were too frail to lift all but the most lithe person on their backs, and even then, their backs flexed so harshly that the forces of its gallop would be painful for a human to absorb.
Josh's mind wandered to his first playthrough of the second-generation games. "Ironically, I think the difficulty of capturing them contributed to why I like them all so much. The journey of capturing all three was months long. I also caught them in reverse speed order. So there's this tale in my head of being in the game world, catching Suicune, then using Suicune to pursue Entei, then using Entei to pursue Raikou." At the mention of Latios, Josh disappeared into his bedroom long enough to grab an adorable Latios and Latias plush. While not as big as the Raikou, they weren't exactly tiny, either. It seemed he had an appreciation for fast Pokémon of all kinds, not just ones with a gallop to them.
The pudgy gamer breathed a sigh of relief when he would be able to keep his computer intact. "Huh, usually I'm pretty careful about where I go online," he remarked. "Good luck with it."

Helen giggled softly, smiling at that. That was one hundred percent Josh indeed… Young people always had wild dreams it seemed. She did too once upon a time before realizing what Reality was like. But… UNOVR let her actualize at least one of them. “If we’re sharing olden time dreams… I wanted to be one of those awesome comic and anime heroes. Larger than life, in charge of their futures… the glory of hard-won success is certainly nice too. Even if it comes with its tragic moments as well.” Helen added shyly. She didn’t remember if she’d told him as much as Alicia, but that didn’t change that it was true. If she had… maybe it would make him start thinking. The next laugh she gave was a bit sharp. Much as she was fighting her fears, they still managed to get a barb in here and there… “Kinda hard though. I mean… just listen to me. Who’s going to feel secure hearing me say ‘everything will be alright’ or something similar?” At least someone had had good fortune with the roaming felines of Johto. Helen nodded softly in appreciation, showing interest in the specifics of the small tale Josh was weaving. “Let me make one thing clear.” She then cut in when Josh mentioned being careful. Her confidence about her diagnosis actually caused her voice to pick up for a second, before dipping back down. “This? This isn’t your fault. When you brought up the immense antivirus log file dated basically the moment you started using the device, I suspected that the malicious code was on the device before you even got a hold of it. And from what I’m seeing? Yeah, this thing was designed to fail. I’ll need to do some recoding to make the computer work again once this problem is eradicated, but it’s not that big a deal. Old hat for me at this point.” ——————————————————————— Josh Devlin

They really weren't too different as children, were they? Both wanted to be heroes with superpowers. Josh's superpowers being dominion over animals and the capability to befriend and saddle animals that would be impossible to do so otherwise. Though he had his favorites, he would have loved any of the big cats. That love of feline predators was what drew him to the Beasts. He was firmly on the feline side of the cat-dog debate, but he didn't want to bring that up to Helen. It was quite a contentious point, and would never be resolved. After all, all three had both feline and canine traits. It was just a matter of what the beholder saw in them.
It was part of the reason Josh preferred the term Beasts for the ultrafast Johto trio.
"But you're already a superhero to me," Josh reassured the shy tech. "You're fixing an issue I've had with this computer for... long enough." He was happy to have such an expert on his side, and a relatable one at that.
It came to his surprise that the device was compromised the moment he got it, according to Helen's expertise. "So it was a lemon from the beginning... Arceus, me," he said in place of naughty language. "Wonder how many people had this same problem, because it's awful suspicious to be having issues with it right after the warranty's up."
