LEVEL-5: MIRAGE PALACE EXPOSITION
Music: Electric Talk
Deep within a magma canyon in BETA ISLAND's BRIMSTONE CRATER was a mystic palace erected in defiance of reality. Discovered when explorer, Beta Tester, and glitch hunter Shalin Nariya clipped out of bounds atop the mountain, her interest was piqued upon seeing a bridgeless lava moat surrounding a palace whose upper floors disappeared into a haze of bright light.
Discovery> A new Dungeon has been discovered: LEVEL-5: Mirage Palace! Information> Recommended Lv: 18
Artist credit: Dan Franke
There appeared to be no way to get to the palace's tall double doors, not even by flying Pokémon; the burning moat was deep enough for flying Pokémon to be unable to simply fly over it without running into UNOVR's ten-foot height limit. The only clue to entry was a mysterious, wooden, blank sign simply hovering in midair. Before Shalin could approach the cliff's edge, she was stopped by a prompt preventing her from getting any closer:
Error> Full Party required.
Following a long but straightforward tunnel back to the surface, Shalin noted its coordinates before sending a message on UNOVR Dungeon chat:
I'm at these coordinates on Beta Island's Brimstone Crater, and I've discovered a new Dungeon. It's called the Mirage Palace, and it's unlike anything I've ever seen. I can't imagine the kinds of treasures contained within... if I could even get in the door. It requires a Full Party. so I need as much help as I can get, preferably at least five people. I've turned global DMs on. Shoot me a message if you want to help me with what sounds like a long dungeon crawl. WHAT TO EXPECT OPEN SLOTS: At least 4 characters. Tentatively one character per author, but I may allow two depending on interest. POSTING CYCLES: In the ballpark of 12 to 15, depending on player actions. This is expected to run about as long as Hearteater parts 1 and 2 put together. SPEED: 72 to 96 hour cycles. Moderator posts will come within 24 hours after the deadline (or earlier if all players post beforehand). Due to the length of this Dungeon, deadlines will be strict to keep the event moving. RUNTIME: Through the end of 2024, but it may bleed slightly into January depending on player actions. MECHANICS: Writing, exploration, logic, light puzzle solving, freeform combat. Site mechanics may influence combat, but mechanical combat will not be used.
This thread will provide a Zelda-style dungeon experience with ample opportunities for characters to work on unlocking specific classes. Emphasis will be on exploration and combat with some puzzle-solving elements, and there will be a boss fight at the end. Prompts will be provided in MODERATOR POSTS every round, and it is up to the players to craft narratives within the guidelines of the moderator posts. Though I am the DUNGEON MASTER of this event, much of the players' enjoyment will revolve around collaborating with one another and within the moderator posts!
Please note that this Dungeon will take place on BETA ISLAND, meaning that you will need a COMMUTER PASS to participate. If you do not have a Commuter Pass at the time the main Dungeon thread is posted, you will be removed from the Dungeon.
To prepare for the Dungeon, you must register a team of up to six Pokémon. Once the registration deadline has passed, that team will be locked in and static; you may not upgrade mid-thread. If you white out, you will despawn and will not be able to return.
D100 rolls in a special rolling thread (link will be in the first mod post) will be used in most cycles.
Combat will be FREEFORM. There are no planned PVP elements to the Quest; this is intended to be a cooperative effort. While mechanical combat will not be used, site mechanics will still matter. Class Abilities and Core Abilities may raise the success rate of your actions.
Players may find items that will be useful inside the dungeon. They may make grant dungeon rerolls, make attacking or defending more effective, make it easier for players to find secrets within the palace, and much more. Unless noted by a Dev, these items will cease to function when taken out of the Mirage Palace.
Players may find the following Basic Classes useful:- Beta Tester
- Bolter
- Dreamer
- Freezer
- Kindler
- Jeweler
- Seer
- Swimmer
- Specter
Characters will be permitted to have only one Pokémon out of their Poké Ball at a time, unless otherwise directed. Characters will be permitted to take one action (using a Pokémon move, switching a Pokémon, investigating an element, etc.) and use one Core Ability per cycle.
Characters will be allowed to miss three rounds without penalty. Every missed cycle after that will result in a fainted Pokémon. Characters whose entire Pokémon parties become fainted will WHITE OUT and be ejected from the Dungeon (Everworld optional). Characters that white out but have made a reasonable participation effort will still be eligible for Dungeon rewards.
There will be no set posting order.
SIGNUPS
Signups will be open until October 22, 2024, 11:59 PM CDT.
To sign up, simply post your response to the notice posted on the in-game Quest Board, and include the following in a SPOILER TAG in your post notes: - A list of up to six Pokémon (class levels and any special moves, such as TM and/or Everworld moves, included)
- A list and/or a screenshot containing your character's shop purchases
Below is an example of the screenshot that would be perfect.
There will not be a limit to the number of signups, but depending on the number of signups, I may limit signups to one character per author. Shalin Nariya will be participating, but she will be posting late in each event cycle and will generally not be assisting with puzzles unless the party appears to be struggling.
You do not need to use the exact signup form below, as long as all core information is listed. You may edit your signup post up until the deadline passes, after which your character loadout will be locked in and static.

"Aw, hell," said Jade, scratching her head.
The plea for help was obvious, but not specific. Surely there were other beach bums living the retiree life out here on Beta Island, right? She wasn't the only lazy sonnovabitch who used this game like a free vacation getaway? If you didn't mind the wild Pokemon lunging out at you every few minutes, you could close your eyes and pretend you were chilling in the Bahamas instead of shriveling up from dehydration in your friend's camper van.
The game came with its perils, though, and one of them was being a good-for-nothing do-gooder. Some damsel in distress-type chick was going into a volcano dungeon, alone? Sounded like she needed someone with highly-tuned survival instincts hovering over her shoulder.
The volcano itself was the problem. "Gotta bring fire types," Jade said, confirming for the hundredth time that yes, she did have Kindler equipped (no way was she spending time next to the Crater without some built-in oven mitts).
Why did she do these things...

Well, this was certainly a surprise. Morpheus didn't expect Shalin's name to be on the Quest Board. Not only that, she discovered a new dungeon in an area he hadn't been to before. Well, he did hear about it since he bought the Commuter's Pass and met Shalin for the first time. But he barely visited it since he heard only the basic three types including most of the starters were found there. Still, hearing about it made him wonder about the rewards found there. At least it was as straightforward as a dungeon as the last one he was in.
However, the only issue right now was his current Pokemon in his box. Ultra Beast aside, he didn't have any Fire-types with him (which in turn, didn't level up his Kindler subclass). But he did level up his Bolter subclass to the max after the raid, so that counts. Another problem was his Electrike was the only one who could take advantage of his class, so he needed another one to work alongside Yukina and the others.
He could try signing up using the Player feature. He saw some of them taking advantage like with the player in purple armor. But the risks would be much higher if he could get knocked out. Then again, the rewards outweigh the risks. He might as well take it considering his Snubbull did a lot for him in the last raid and he couldn't bear her to go into another risky venture after being knocked out. Plus, his Bolter class would take care of his Normal-type tome he purchased to avoid spending too much for a while. Speaking of which, the player's Frosmoth made him inspired to try evolving his own Snom. So he should focus on that first.
This is Morpheus. I got your call and I have the pass needed for the Beta Island. I'm on my way.
With that taken care of, it was time for him to prepare for his next destination: Beta Island. {Sign-up} Character Tag: MorpheusPokémon:Yukina the Glaceon | | Sweeper Glacies the Cryogonal | | Tank Solis the Solrock | | Tank Morpheus (Player) | No Type | Support Revi the Electrike | | Sweeper Luna the Snom | | Support Shop Purchases: (His main class is T1 Dreamer along with his T5 Gardener and T5 Bolter)

Alicia hummed a tune to herself, resting on a decently thick tree branch in the Misty Timberlands. With the madness of the World Event out of the way at last, she was slowing down a bit. Just enough to take a breather and wile away for a few hours just relaxing with her Pokemon. They all needed it as far as she was concerned. Perhaps she could’ve picked a better locale, but she doubted she was going to be bothered too much by whatever appeared. It was chance, really, that she happened to scroll through the various chats right as Shalin dropped a big message. Pity, it was bad timing on the glitch hunter’s part. She glanced around at her current team. Aside from Giyun and Fumar having a spat both because they were mad at each other and for old time’s sake, everyone was chilling in their own way. Who was she to bother them? … Oh who was she kidding? Alicia whistled, getting everyone’s attention as she jumped from her perched. ”Load ‘em up and move ‘em out, we got a friend in need!””Is it Shalin?” Tikani asked. ”Uh, actually, yeah. How’d you know?” Alicia responded quirking an eyebrow. ”Lucky guess.” the Meganium replied. ”A chance to show up this pile of steam is always appreciated! Giyun growled out with a grin. Fumar promptly headbutt the Duraludon, and the two got into a glaring match. ”Hah! As if you could show anyone up with that empty chrome dome! I’ll be the star of this one, Tiny Tinny!””Oh you’re asking for it now, Mr. Hot Air!” Giyun snarled back. ”Cool your heads or BOTH of you are getting left behind!” Alicia snipped out, not wanting to deal with the spat anymore. The two rival Pokemon kept the glaring up for a moment, before pulling away and turning their backs on each other with simultaneous ‘HMPH’s. She sighed and recalled them both, in order to make room to hear from her other planned teammates. ”Well, whoever is calling for assistance, know we stand ready all the same. We follow your lead!” Sylvene exclaimed once she was brought up to speed. ”You’ll need a medic or two, won’t you? It sounds like it’s going to be a long trek.” Pearl asked in concern. Alicia nodded, before making one more swap out to hear from the last one. ”D-Do we have to?” Shylla asked, shaking a bit. ”It sounds scary.””Come on now. This will be the perfect chance to get your feelers wet with a real adventure. Believe in yourself! You don’t want to be a fraidy Meowth forever, do you?” Alicia replied, patting him on the head in reassurance. The Toedscool wasn’t sure about that. But he heaved a sigh and tried to stand tall and proud as his answer. ”That’s the spirit!” Alicia chimed, before pulling everyone but Tikani back in and smiling. Getting up onto the Meganium’s back, she settled in as future’s lightning crackled. ”Let’s… GO!”Tikani nodded, and the boom of Electro Drift heralded their departure. He sorely, sorely missed Kindler. Like, what the fuck, he didn't realize how wildly different the temperatures could swing in UNOVR, traveling around fire and magma and heat and dessert. Sure, it wasn't all that needed in more regular temperature places, but here? In a magma canyon?
Unfortunately, even with his recently equipped Beta Tester class, he definitely didn't have the same mastery of it over Shalin, and he also hadn't figured out how to slightly cool down his body to mimic a weaker version of the Kindler Tier 1. Sigh. He felt like the Hibernal Heart in him was melting...
Anyway, this basically felt like the recon mission all over again, but instead of it being like, impending doom and death at the bottom of the dungeon, it seemed to be a bit more hopeful and jolly. Treasure, in other words. He did like the sound of that. Because of that, he put together a team that wasn't as tight and thought out as what he had for when they descended the Hibernaculum, but it would at least allow him to experiment more. And he could finally let Kanya join into something and not feel left out.
The goal anyway was to help out where he could. He had a feeling that other more powerful players were going to come in hot, and he was content with still being a support for now. Even he knew that - as not much time has passed between Hearteater and this dungeon - he had yet to gather enough power to feel that he had grown. And there was the matter of Gou still being in the Everworld, to boot...

Allies started pouring in as Shalin visited the Shop, finalizing her loadout and ter team for the intimidating-looking palace. It did not take her long to make her decisions; with the bubbling magma far below, master level Kindler seemed like a no-brainer. Clicking open Reynir's Poké Ball, she would let the Galarian Ponyta out for a run. While there wasn't enough room to properly get her trained for riding, she expected that Pokémon as mounts would be restricted with the palace, much like inside the Spirit's Grave and Seviper's Remains.
By the time she had left the shop menu (and the main menu), she was surrounded by faces both familiar and new. She greeted Morpheus , Kyukon , and Alicia Westfield before walking toward Jade Jager , though she looked a bit perturbed about the possibly flirtatious comment. "Thanks for responding to the call," she would address the sporty female. "Shalin Nariya, glitch hunter. I've been in a few dungeons like this before. This one feels different, which is why I put out the call for a party." The level recommendation that was well above her current level was part of it, too; she had the exploration skills. She just needed the DPS to be able to handle whatever combat was inside. If any of the dungeon Bosses were any indicator, she might find herself back at a Shrine after just a single hit against one. {Party}Character Tag: Shalin Nariya Pokémon: Rumble the Onix (Sweeper - 3/3/4 - Everworld Move: Trick Room) Prower the Floatzel (Sweeper - 3/3/4) Balan the Liepard (Sweeper - 3/3/4) - Huge Seal equipped) Sandy the Vibrava (Tank - 2/2/3 - Huge Seal equipped) Kiara the Litleo (Tank - 2/2/3) Reynir the G!Ponyta (Support - 2/2/3) Shop Purchases:

Well, he’d just finished his weekly roulette runs and finished killing time with Sidra in Eorzea (which inevitably resulted with him telling her to get her shit together because despite him being GNB on main and she’d decided to go NIN, he still had to bail her ass out a few times, much to his consternation) and decided he’d kill some time in the other game that he played—which he’d tried to get her in on, without much success.
Either way… there would be an interesting message that would flash across his screen the moment he’d signed into Unovr. And it was from a certain greenette who was looking for a companion to explore an… holy shit.
Why did it have to be an underground volcano castle?! He wondered if being a max-leveled Swimmer was going to be of any help at all, considering the location… he sighed.
He knew he had to bring his best, so that was what he would be lugging along.
He would send her a message that simply said, ‘on my way’ and then made the trip to Beta Island.

An automated alert pinged in Big Bee's UI. It was impossible to keep up with global chat sometimes, so he had a filter set up for global messages, and anything with the word 'help' in it was automatically turned into a proper alert. He put down his hand of cards and opened his UI.
it was from Shalin Nariya, an up-and-coming trainer. And she had found a cool dungeon on Beta Island! Because of the limited number of players with Beta Passes, dungeons popping up on Beta Island was a rare occurrence. It needed a full party, that meant six Pokemon. No problems there, he'd been meaning to bring along his new (old?) fossils to a dungeon!
Big Bee: I love beta island! I'll be right there. Bee sent the message and closed his UI.
Jam glared at him across the table. The Groudon let out a deep rumble and pointed at the table with one of his massive claws. It was Bee's turn, and had been for a while.
"What? I needed to respond to a message! I didn't even take that long." Bee looked at his cards again. "Hmmm. Yeah this hand is terrible. I fold." He tossed his cards onto the table. "Well dinner's on me, but even better news: We're headed back to Beta Island!"

"Are you sure this is going to work?" Ruby spoke to Wattson the Voltorb, who sat in the passenger side seat of her Jeep. "It feels... I don't know. Weird. I've never actually pushed the pedals myself before." She mumbled softly, examing the long blocks of wood that she had tied to her shoes. She certainly couldn't walk in these, they'd be like stilts! Not to mention, the booster seat she was sitting in to actually see over the dashboard and the steering wheel.
"I am absolutely, 100% sure." The Voltorb began, nodding his whole body. Or at least, as much as he could with the seat belt trapping him in place. "You should have much greater control over your position in the vehicle, if you are the one in control."
"If you're sure..." She'd slowly stretch out her foot, pushing the gas pedal and revving the engine. "Oh!" An excited laugh slipped from her lips, as she reached out to press it again, hearing the engine roar.
"That's the way to do it! Just take it slow, yeah? Out here in the crater, you got a lot of terrifying holes all over the place. Move very slowly, and let's put it into first gear."
"So when did you learn how to drive?" Rose raised her eyebrows curiously, glancing over at the Voltorb before slowly shifting the gearstick and moving forwards at a very slow crawl.
"I read the vehicle manual." He explained, as if that answered everything somehow. "You have done that, right?"
"Uh... The jeep came with instructions?" Rose smiled sheepishly, trying to keep her eyes out on the- Well, not road, there was no road. But she was focusing forwards. That is, until a message suddenly appeared on her screen. The car started to drift turning slowly as Rose read, before Wattson spoke up suddenly.
"Focus! We're going slow, but you can still get hurt."
"Sorry! I just got a message! People need help! I gotta reply!" Rose explained, putting the car slowly into park again as she began to respond.
"Well, at least you are not texting and driving." The Electrode rolled his eyes slowly.
Rose Garden: i am coming! i have lots of friedly pokemon who r gud ate fighting and i like explorin. dungoens are fun! !! k. pls b patient i am lrning to drive for realsies this time.
Selecting the coordinates, instead of pulling up on her UI map, they appeared on the little screen within the Jeep, the navigation elements seamlessly integrated. How interesting! That certainly had Wattson's attention, slowly attempting to lean forwards to look at the screen. "Hmm, not far from here. Just follow the arrows, and it'll take you there. Just, slowly, yeah?"
"Okay! Yeah! Slow!" Rose shifted the car into gear, and accidentally pressed down too hard on the gas pedal, having no idea how hard it needed pushed.

Beta Island was already a mystery in and on itself, so for the greenette to find something that was… seemingly ‘nonexistent’ on any map? Especially out on Beta Island (which definitely did not exist back on the European servers?)
He knew that she had done the strange ‘falling through the floor’ thing again. Who knew what she was going to get up into?!
Either way, he would pinch the bridge of his nose, before sending her a quick message that he was headed back to Beta Island, and that he might be just a little late…
