{TRANSMISSION FROM PROFESSOR ASH} INITIATING FAST TRAVEL TO: BROKEN SUNDIALHEARTEATER PT.1
1. THE BEGINNING OF THE ENDThe Broken Sundial looms from the darkness like a giant shield, its shining face bleached white by desert sun and sanded smooth by desert winds. The world is calm. The air shimmers with heat, rising off the sands.
There is no sign of any Ultra Beasts. It's far too late in the day to catch the Night Parade: the time is noon, the sun burning high above you.
Burning.
Something else is burning. As the four of you stand before the Sundial, blinking in the bright light, something incongruous occurs. Stars appear in the day sky, salt on ultrablue. They spark. They shine. They grow closer.
Who said meteor showers can only occur at night?
Explosions of sand burst up from the ground in geysers as meteors plummet all around you on tails of fire. Each one narrowly misses, a sudden flurry of starshower by the game meant to shock and disorient your senses.
When the sand and flame clear, the Sundial is changed.
Now pocked by meteor blasts, shards of its former surface have fallen away, leaving the sands riddled with crumbled tile and metal plates. Underneath, a new pattern has been revealed, like a forgotten fresco waiting beneath drywall.
Rather than numbers, a series of hieroglyphs run around the exterior of the sundial in place of standard numerals. As you reach out to touch the image at the top of the clock, it pops up with a text description.
I am not 12. At the one-o-clock position, the icon tells another story.
I am a multiple of three. Things start to piece together. The icons on the sundial each represent a number, as on a standard clock. However, they are not in order. "Broken" indeed. Lastly, an inscription runs around the sundial face that Josh Devlin wouldn't have remembered from his previous visit here, forming a half-arch like a rainbow with a date and time signature in the center. It seems four slots are awaiting input. Sarah Lee, the Commander | Josh Devlin, the Specialist | Kyukon, the Inheritor | Ruby, the Observer

Sarah shaded her eyes against the midday sun and looked up at the flat, towering face of the sundial. "Josh Devlin. You're the expert. What do you know about this place?"
The air was still ruffled, full of sand, smoke, and stardust. Sarah turned a slow circle, noting nothing of interest from horizon to horizon. They were alone out here. There was no 'secondary team' if this went South.
"Kyukon, Ruby, those meteors knocked off parts of the sundial. See what you can find in the sands, I think we'll need every hint we can find to solve the puzzle." Sarah set Warlock the Pidgey and Bader the Druddigon to search with the others. The chunks of sundial couldn't have gotten far. Focus the Braixen, Lavender Knight of the Whitecayge Coalition, stood by her side.
"Lots of connections," Sarah said, making notes in her UI. "Sun and Fireworks are only one apart. Same with Moon and Wasp."
"What do the symbols mean?" Focus asked. She strode forward and placed her paws on the surface of the grand construction, checking for hidden buttons or loose stones. "Are they meant to represent numbers directly?"
"Perhaps," Sarah answered, frowning as tried to transcribe hints at the same time as talking. "But this can't have been part of a cohesive language. Numbers are one of the first thing that gets turned into symbols, and using complex pictograms like this would be backwards. I think they are one-off symbols."
Sarah realized something and went back over her workings. "Tower is three. It's a multiple of three and a prime number. Only one of those." She made a definitive note.
In the end she had only a single number figured out, but with hints about many more. The Sundial prompted her for four numbers beneath an ominous title. "The beginning of the end. The end of what? The game? The sundial? Does anyone know what this could be referring to?"
She dragged four symbols into the prompt boxes. Without knowing what it wanted or what the symbols were, her chances were one in a million. But there was still a chance...

The sun is blinding. This was the first time (other than the colossal battle), where even the Kindler class could not mitigate the heat from the environment. He felt stifled, but what more of his fellow players who didn't have it equipped? It was his first time in this place, with the imposing circular slab looming over them like an eye, watching their every movement, or a clock, if it were moving. But before he could take a closer look, spots in the sky began to glow brighter than the sun, if that was even possible. It took him a few seconds to realize what they were, and he immediately reached out for one of his Poke Balls.
❝Anta, Wide Guard!❞
The Mantyke's antennae glow white before a series of yellow and brown hexagons form over her and her trainer. The range, despite its name, is not that much because of her size and the amount of time she was given to set it up, but it turned out that the move did not matter in the end. The stars were preprogrammed to ensure they missed, and Arthur had to keep his footing on the ground to keep his wits about him.
And then the explosions stopped. Arthur immediately withdrew his Mantyke after a quick thank you, knowing full well that she would not survive long in the desert.
The dust took a while to settle, but the sundial's looming presence stood above the sand clouds, revealing a new form for them to decrypt. He had done some Googling on the Ultra Beasts a few nights before the expedition took place, and so their appearances were fresh in his mind. ❝'M guessing that mosquito is supposed to be Buzzwole.❞ that name stuck out to him the most because he actually met one in person and up close. He didn't memorize the other names, but he remembered how they looked, and they did match with the carvings on the dial.
But that was not helpful to them, other than identifiers. The real challenge was the number-logic puzzle that appeared when they hovered over each symbol.
Sarah Lee started to speak. It made sense - he remembered them from the Survivor event, and their position as commander was not contested. They were, he believed, the oldest player amongst them. The logic seemed sound, especially with some of the text descriptions missing their clues. ❝Right...of all the places we had to explore.❞ he muttered, for a desert was certainly not a pleasant place to be. Arthur pulled out two Poke Balls and let out Gou the Monferno and Hie the Poochyena. At a last minute reflection, he decided that a nose for sniffing things out was more important than a dragon that might act out due to age. Gou was there partly as a bodyguard, mostly to act as shade for Hie. In truth, there was nothing to see for miles. The only thing that would be able to pounce on them was underground, and he didn't want to think about that. Arthur was curious to see that Sarah also had a Druddigon with them, but there was no denying it was more mature than his own. It would be nice if Mugan would be able to meet them in the future.
Ruby was the only person Arthur had never met in this team. He thought about them splitting up to cover more ground, but Hie was struggling to find anything in the swirling sands. He admitted that this was a really tough first job for a Pokemon that he had only gotten to know a few days prior. Eventually though, the Poochyena let out a bark and ran off from Gou's shadow, pawing and attempting to dig at a half-buried fragment, but his paws were getting burnt by the noonlight sand.
❝Hie, wait, good job, no your paws--❞ he picked up the mutt, who quickly settled down, and it was up to Gou to loosen and pull out the chunk with the Druddigon's help.
Well, he hoped that hint was helpful. He hadn't even gotten a good look at the actual puzzle yet. He suggested to Ruby that they should return with this piece for now before seeing if there was another one to find. Once they did get back, he waved to Sarah Lee and told them what they found.
❝Wait, did you already try guessing? Did you confirm if we have an unlimited number of tries?❞ there was a hint of panic in his voice, but the prompt box in front of him didn't seem to say anything about errors...he tried to reel back his worry. ❝If we have unlimited attempts, brute force is a final but possible resort.❞ he definitely did not want to get to that, because who knew what kind of dangers lurked out here? Beyond the creatures, the sun would continue to beat down on them brutally. This was a race against time.

"Right, I did go poking around here," the newly-minted Ironsmith replied, able to feel Raiden's heartbeat. Sliding down from the Zebstrika's back to take a look at the familiar yet unfamiliar sundial, the young lad noticed a relationship between the symbols and Ostellia's wildlife. "These are... all the Pokémon native to this region," Josh voiced his observation. "The Jellyfish, Cockroach, and Monster were all from Route 7, the Mosquito, Cockroach, and Origami were all from Route 8, and the Rocket, Tower, Wasp, and Firework were all from Route 9. That insignia in the middle... see if that follows any specific order. That might give us a clue."
As Sarah Lee posed her final question, a thought came to Josh's mind. That format the sundial was asking for looked... oddly familiar. "Gimme some time to flip through my Logbook..." he trailed off, even the KINDLER showing signs of being unable to deal with the heat. He had been in the desert at night with Nero , when it was much cooler outside. This was in the middle of the day. If the heat was affecting him this much, even with his mastery of the KINDLER class, he felt bad for the heat stroke he expected those without KINDLER mastery to suffer.
"Aha, this is it," Josh had a eureka moment, opening his quest log of Exploring Sector Jarzick. "Control-F works wonders even in the modern age, doesn't it?" he mused as he broadcast the entries to the rest of the party.
{Log Entry 1}20:00 11-11-XXXX
The situation has escalated. I received word the Pokémon League was destroyed at 18:00 last night, for reasons you probably know as well as I do. Our sister lab was vaporized, as were most of my colleagues. Unfortunately, there is no time to grieve.
My work on the extradimensional portals has been coming along well, but I never expected we'd need it so soon, or in such dire circumstances.
The public is being told it was a freak terrorist act, but that story won't hold up long when it crosses the ocean and they get a good look at it. Everyone is afraid of bad press for now, but what about the lives of the people of this region?
{Log Entry 2}13:40 11-13-XXXX
It's dead. It's actually dead. We won. I could faint, I'm so happy. Of course, there were casualties— so many, some of which will haunt me for the rest of my life— but we really did it. The portal grid was the key— what's really amazing is that we were actually able to fashion a weapon out of what we found on the other side, especially given the time restrictions. I wish we'd been able to do it faster— many innocent lives were lost— but in the end, I'm happy it worked out this way.
They're calling me a hero.
{Log Entry 3}19:55 11-25-XXXX
Something is wrong. A darkness persists, even after the threat is gone.
Am I being paranoid?
I hear a voice in my sleep. It calls me a killer, and calls itself the judge.
"Those dates are in this exact same format as this one," the Specialist pointed out. "If we can piece together enough information, I want to try something that uses the numbers from those dates. Maybe some of the numbers wrap--"
Before he could finish his sentence or make a guess, the starshower knocked Josh off his feet and into the sand around him. The angle at which he landed forced Raiden back into his Poké Ball and Ulysses out of it. The Dewgong, not nearly as adapted to the heat as Josh was, almost immediately began overheating. Light red numerals, alongside dark red ones, began cascading in front of the ice-type's model, his blubbery body not designed to withstand the desert heat nor the scorching sands.
For Josh no longer had Swimmer equipped, meaning the Dewgong's body baked on the scorching sands.
Will lock in my team later tonight! {Party}Trainer Subclass: Kindler 5, Bolter 5, Ironsmith 1 Tank: HP 3, Attack 3, Moves 3 || Escape Sweeper: HP 3, Attack 3, Moves 4 || Dodge, Escape Support: HP 3, Recovery 3, Moves 3 || Buff Team: Josh, Apollo the Celesteela, Izoni the Naganadel, Raiden the Zebstrika, Ares the Charmeleon (will be evolving mid-event), Ulysses the Dewgong

As expected, Josh Devlin's insight was invaluable. While Kyukon had drawn the first link, Josh had filled in nine more of the symbols. Sarah looked over the sundial with new eyes. "All of the species from Ostellia," she said, tagging them in her UI. "What about these ones? The Sun and the Moon?"
"The middle insignia is a mystery. It potentially marks a path of some sort, but some of the symbols are never used, and some of the lines start between symbols. I'm not sure what that could mean." She toyed with the lines for a minute. "Actually. It's not one path. This diagram doesn't describe a single, continuous path. It describes two different paths that overlap but never meet. Look at this." She sent the others images one and two to show her working.
"There are two starting points, so I've shown the first step of red and the first three steps of blue. And now you can see they'll never merge!"
"Instead, both lines just move in a triangle and end up where they where at the end of the first image." Sarah frowned at the situation. "I'm not sure if it's related at all to the four-digit puzzle, but we can keep it in mind. Perhaps it makes more sense once all of the symbols have a related digit."
She swapped info and questions with Josh in the midday heat. A haze shrouded the two as they worked, and tiny blue flames sizzled off Sarah's hands as she tapped away at her UI, adding notes here and there. At some point she sent out Ron, her Charizard, and he extended his mighty wings to give her and Josh some shade. It did little to quell the heat.
Sarah read through the shared journal entries. "Where did you find these?" she asked, noting the dates.
Sarah looked between the notes and the entry field of four digits. "Only two of these work," she said, striking through the bottom two. "And based on the message, my bet would be on 1 - 8 - 11 - 10. The destruction of the Pokemon League sure sounds like the beginning of the end. Unless we have another date for when this threat first appeared?"
The starshower knocked Josh over and Sarah offered him a hand. "Ruby! We need your healing," Sarah said swiftly. "This Dewgong is in bad shape, and the heat is making it worse." Sarah hadn't put a single BYTE into support. She was built for the front lines, but that left her useless in moments like this. {LOCKING IN}Trainer Subclass: Kindler T5, Catalyst T5, Steeler T1 Tank: HP T4, Charge Atk T4, Level/Moves T5, Guard/Disrupt Sweeper: HP T5, Fast Atk T5, Level/Moves T5, Recoil/Dodge/Escape/Sacrifice Support: HP T1, Heal T4, Level/Moves T1, No Core Abilities Team: Emboar (Sweeper - Shiny - Fire/Dragon) Braixen (Sweeper - Shiny + Noble Seal) - Fire/Psychic) Luxio (Tank - Electric/Dragon) Druddigon (Tank - Primal Seal - Dragon) Pidgeotto (Sweeper - Icicle Seal/Huge Seal - Flying/Ice) Dunsparce (Tank - Normal)

What about the Sun and the Moon? Sarah had asked. Arthur crossed his arms, unsure if they should keep on searching for the other missing piece or try to figure something out here. They got lucky that the piece that fell from the sundial was not too far off from where the structure was, but what about the other? Then again, it really should not have gotten far, considering the blast radius of those missile-like meteor showers.
❝Sun and Moon are the names of the games where the Ultra Beasts came from, right?❞ if he got any looks about it, he would then follow up with, ❝I did some Googling before the start of the World Event.❞ anyway, that basically seemed to clue in that the Sun and Moon were the legendaries featured on the covers, but he didn't know if it meant that they were going to encounter them here, or if they were just important in some other way.
In any case, they didn't directly contribute to the puzzle, he felt. Not this one, anyway. In games, they felt more like stand ins for a larger lore that was yet to be revealed.
Arthur received the picture with the lines that Sarah Lee drew. While interesting, he didn't want to add them into the potential complexity until they had no other options. Besides, the clues themselves already offered plenty. They needed to at least get the numbers down first, because even if they had the answer to the four slots, it didn't matter if they didn't even knew which numbers meant what.
Upon seeing the other trainer's Charizard, Arthur felt a pang of envy and admiration. It was not surprising for them to have such a powerful Pokemon, but he sure wished that he had someone who could block the shade. Stura came to mind, but there was no way he was going to endanger Torino 's Pokemon for his own foolishness (he was briefly considered, but ultimately his conscience gave way). While Sarah and Josh were discussing about the sundial, Arthur decided to take a crack at the puzzle's contents so far (at least, part one of it). He pulled out his UI as well and began to work in the heat. While puzzles were not his forte, he had played a few puzzle games when he was particularly bored, and this was more of logic than equations.
Sarah was right, the Tower being (3) was the start of the puzzle. With the hint that he brought back, that gave them a few more options: the Sun must be either Two, Ten, or Twelve. Three was already out of the picture. But then thinking about it more, he realized that it was a matter of elimination, particularly because of the Firework's clue. If their numbers were chronologically beside each other, then the Sun couldn't be two or twelve, it had to be (10).
❝Sarah, the Sun is 10, the Firework is 11.❞ and based from their discussion, that was two out of the four numbers they needed. However, that was not the end of it, for a second stream - an aftershock of the showers came, and this resulted in more kicked up sand and Josh bringing out a Pokemon he recognized but hadn't seen him ride. The Dewgong looked to be in terrible shape. ❝We can't heal them here. We need to find shade first, otherwise the heat will only undo any relief. Put them back in the ball.❞ the seal looked like it was wilting, even if it wasn't a flower. If he was already a little worried about Anta getting burned from her brief Wide Guard, what more of this Dewgong who couldn't float?
The situation in front of him agitated Arthur. If the game was not going to warn him about limited guesses, he might as well give it a try. Opening his UI and prompting the screen to appear, he slid four icons with his finger and locked it in.

Ash was counting on her to keep track of her teammates, to keep an eye on their mental health. That Hearteater, whatever it may be, was a psychic foe worthy of some reasonable fear.
There was a lot to be worried about.
She had to take a deep breath, quelling her nerves on the whole situation. They were going to be diving into the depths of dangers, with ramifications for the whole of UNOVR. The heat of the desert, the meteors exploding around them upon hitting the ground, all of it's terrifying. And yet, none of it compares to the fear of confronting her own fears.
She can do this.
She had to do this.
If she didn't do this, nothing would matter. She might as well just be a fly upon the wall, watching for eternity and just as weak as one too. Being the Queen of the Dreamworld would mean absolutely nothing if she never, not once, attempted to make a difference within the waking world. Her grand gestures of encouraging others to seek a better future, to act upon their own desires, would mean nothing if she stopped there.
She could do this, but that didn't stop her from uttering a silent prayer, hoping that her dear friend, King Articuno could watch over her.
Ruby was otherwise quiet as she helped search through the desert sands, following the orders of Sarah Lee , and it was a relief when they found a few of the answers. But at some point, she had to stop being a wallflower. She had to engage, be a part of things, talk with these strangers. Her eyes were just looking upwards at the Dial, listening to the conversations, but just existing wouldn't be enough.
She had to take care of them, after all. Ash, perhaps everyone, was counting on her. She had worked with Sarah Lee before, the memory as clear as day for her, even if it wasn't for the other trainer. The Dream World acted in mysterious ways. Duchess Sarah of Whitehouse, of course. Or at least, they used to be. Whatever title they claimed now would be just as correct as anything else.
But the others were a mystery. If only she had time to get to know them before the mission started, but they didn't have any time at all.
When she was called over to help, Ruby was swiftly pushing up her sleeves to get to work. Without any further hesitation, she tossed out two of her Pokémon. The twin Indeedee, Dear and Darling. They immediately made their way over towards the Dewgong seeing it in physical pain, and the two swiftly lifting them up off the desert sands as Darling herself moved to patch up their wounds. Certainly the two helper Pokémon were much stronger than they looked, Dear especially. The two literally survived off of the happy emotions and energy of others, like the most positive kind of symbiosis she could imagine. Of course they'd throw themselves at lifting the seal up together without a single complaint.
"I would agree. They need to go back in the ball, if they're suffering this heavily. This is not the environment for them. Perhaps they can help once we get inside?" Ruby began, finally reaching into her backpack. She always carried so many things in preparation for the world around her, ready for anything.
And that included sunburns. As odd as it was, the 'Sunburn Debuff' was just as painful as she remembered a true sunburn to be. Not that she got out much before coming here, that is. She'd toss a tube of sunscreen with a cute little Sunflora on the label gently over towards Josh Devlin . "At the very least, protect them! And yourself, for that matter. Pass it around while we work on this? I've already layered up before I left the house today."
She scanned across the hints, only to pull out a pen and paper from her backpack as well. "If the correct answer is when the League fell, and the Sun is 10 and the Firework is 11 as you claim, then we only need to know what symbols 1 and 8 are. There's only two possibilities for 1. The Plug, and the Origami. But-"
[tangent="We found something!"]"Dee!"[/tangent] [tangent="Something is beneath our feet!"]"Indee!"[/tangent] Both her Pokémon cried out at once, causing Ruby to turn. She looked over, and it seemed they had been standing atop another hint, just buried beneath the sand. They'd moved to the side, kicking sand away to reveal it when they helped take care of the Dewgong.
PLUG: I am a fire-type
"Hmm, thank you Dear, Thank you Darling!" She'd give them the sweetest thankful smile, hoping to translate her appreciation before returning her attention to the puzzle. "I can, only imagine that hint, relates to Pokedex entries? The only way I can relate that to a number. Either way, number 1 is Bulbasaur and not Fire, which means Origami has to be 1. Which means, we only need one more." She's writing down Origami, Sun, and Firework in her little notebook as she continues.
"Which means, we only need to figure out 8. And fewer and fewer symbols can possibly be that. So, with any luck... We should only need a few more guesses, if that, to resolve this. Presuming we have the date right, of course." She purses her lips, her nerves threatening to raise up, worrying they had everything wrong, but what better evidence they have?
Reaching forwards, Ruby selected her first proper guess. "I am, guessing Jellyfish. If it's wrong, someone try a different one."
Origami. Jellyfish. Firework. Sun.

The sun's rays were steadfast and painful, so he was thankful for the sunscreen that Ruby was passing around. That was plus points to him on resourcefulness; something that he didn't consider to bring. As it didn't look like they were going to venture into the sands again to look for another broken piece of the sundial, he decided to return Hie into his Poke Ball for now, which he hoped that cooler than the blistering heat out here.
He hid the fact that he got the symbols totally wrong in that last input, even if he made a show of figuring out what the other numbers were. That would be a secret he would take to his fictional grave. At least they were able to find another hint, which pointed them to the right direction in figuring out which one was (1). Since the hints were pointing to locking in three numbers, it seemed very possible that the answer they discovered earlier was the correct combination. Now they just had to figure out which one was (8).
Ruby decided to give the input a try, and so he watched her while keeping one of his hands over his eyes in an attempt to lessen the glare. A couple of moments passed before something happened: a sound that seemed to be a click in the middle of the desert winds.

Click. The sundial creeeeaks, lowers horizontally, then opens like a camera aperture, sand-scored panels sliding effortlessly across one another like a folding fan. It dilates in an instant, as if the dunes themselves suddenly gasped for breath.
Like the top half of an hourglass, the Sundial opens down, revealing a great basin of trickling sand. You are reminded of a Trapinch's nest, a funnel-shape leading down to the jaws of an unknown enemy.

Into the termite nest, into the dunes.
You spawn in sand and shade, the desert sun now miles above you. You’ve descended into a wide, circular, sandy cavern, the first level of a dungeon of unknown depth. Your minimap indicates a tunnel ahead, leading further out into this level. But that’s not what you’re most concerned with at the moment.
The cavern is packed with bodies.
A slew of Pokémon utterly drained of color, crisp and white as new coloring-book pages. Their bodies lay in piles, discarded and unmoving. Upon examination, the bleached Pokémon do not seem to be dead - they seem paralyzed, sedated like insects in a spider's web. Their glazed, open eyes stare at nothingness.
Except for one.
A splash of color, red as Martian soil. Perhaps because it was already mostly white to begin with, a lone Litten— in its shiny form— has been overlooked. The cat struggles feebly, buried beneath the dead weight of sand and other bodies.

The sundial shifted and split, and Sarah's Pokemon drew close. Druddigon stomped over to her side, the youngster forgotten. Warlock spread her wings wide, sheltering trainer and Pokemon alike like a protective hen. Focus stood stalwart at her side, Noonlight wand gripped firm in one paw. Charizard pushed to the front, flames dripping from his jaws.
The tension was as oppressive as the heat.
The maw of the Hibernaculum drained down into the unknown. The entrance to the dungeon was unlocked, hungry, and waiting. Sarah's tongue found a rest at the corner of her dry lips. She looked at the others. There was no need for discussion. They were here for one reason alone. If there was talk of turning back, the time for it was long passed.
Sarah reached for the UI prompt and pressed it with a a steady hand.
> YES, I’M READY
A moment later her shoes crunched against cool sand, digging gentle divots in the fine-grained grit. The cavern was packed with Pokemon, and Sarah withdrew half of them to give the group space. Warlock's wide wings disappear, as do Ron's. Druddigon is returned too, leaving only her deep footprints. That left only Focus.
"I will stay."
"I would not ask you to leave."
Sarah addressed the group, honing in each of them in turn. "Wonderful work, Queen Rubella. Solving the puzzle so swiftly bodes well. I was already assured of our skill and strength, so it is good to know we have luck as well."
Next was Kyukon. His quick-thinking Wide Guard hadn't gone unnoticed. Nor had his finding of the missing chunk in the sands. "Your reaction speed is impressive. I see why Claw speaks highly of you. I will be counting on your eyes."
Last was Josh, who she had already discussed things with in-depth. His breadth of current knowledge was impressive, and she wanted to keep him close as they pushed further in. She walked towards the colorless creatures, motioning for him to follow. "Josh, my resident expert, what do you know of these?" She inclined her head at the bleached Pokemon. "Have there been reports of anything like this throughout Ostellia? Anything losing its color?"
Something spoke from under a stack of bodies. Movement among the frozen forms. Sound among the silent sand.
"⊬⍜⎍'⍀⟒ ⋏⍜⏁ ⌰⟟☍⟒ ⏁⊑⟒ ⍜⏁⊑⟒⍀⌇,"
Sarah's head whipped towards the noise. Ulysses at first squirmed upon being picked up from the sands. This was the first time the Dewgong had been out of his Poké Ball since Josh unequipped Swimmer to make room for Ironsmith. It was enough time for the scout to withdraw the Dewgong for his Zebstrika. The electric horse, too, began sweating, though not as badly as the ice-type did. "Ruby , thanks so much for bailing him out. He's been suffering Corruption poisoning ever since we found that one of the doors in the Doortals leads very deep into Mistra," he told the tale of how the poor seal got in the trouble he was in to begin with.
As the way to the HIBERNACULUM opened, a red message appeared in the center of Josh's UI:
Warning> Once you enter the dungeon, you will be unable to use Fast Travel, access the Main Menu, or access the Shop until the dungeon has been completed.
This was scary stuff. Being unable to access the Main Menu meant, among other things, meant that he could not log out. If his connection dropped, the dungeon might not allow reconnections. Even so, the allure of treasure and a place to show off his new equine Ferrari was too much for him to resist.
Decision> Will you enter the Hibernaculum? ► Yes No
Climbing aboard his Zebstrika before confirming his decision to continue onward, Josh's vision faded to white. Closing his eyes to avert them to sun-like brightness. The moment he spawned in place, he felt Raiden rearing in fright, the electric equine utterly terrified of the colorless Pokémon scattered throughout the tunnel.
Josh himself was too occupied with keeping his mortified steed under control to hear Sarah Lee 's inquiry. "Easy, boy!" the child exclaimed as he tried to rein his Pokémon in. It was only by his vast experience as a Pokémon rider that he was able to calm the horse, who was still glowing with far more sparks than normal: a sign of nerves. He gave the electric-type gentle pats in an effort to keep him under control. "Sorry about that; can you repeat?" Were she kind enough to do so, Josh would frown and answer her, "No, nothing like that to my knowledge. This is all brand new to me."
Before he could get too much farther in conversing with their leader, the skittering sound frightened the Zebstrika a second time. Without as much of a command from his rider, the Pokémon galloped down the trail at full blast. There was no whoop from the young man; only sheer concentration as the rest of the party could hear only the continuous sound of blurred hooves clacking against the tunnel floor at a rate too rapid to discern each individual footfall. The horse's four legs mid-EXTREME SPEED were but a continuous black and white blur as the Specialist sped deeper into the Hibernaculum.
Roll: Progress 13, Progress 22- Josh withdraws his Dewgong, preventing further heat and wound damage to it. - Josh enters the dungeon mounted on his Zebstrika, who is frightened by the monochrome Pokémon. - Josh responds to Sarah Lee that he had not encountered this phenomenon anywhere in Ostellia. - Zebstrika dashes off in Extreme Speed after hearing the alien sounds. {Spoiler}{Party}Trainer Subclass: Kindler 5, Bolter 5, Ironsmith 1 Tank: HP 3, Attack 3, Moves 3 || Escape Sweeper: HP 3, Attack 3, Moves 4 || Dodge, Escape Support: HP 3, Recovery 3, Moves 3 || Buff Team: Josh 500/500 Apollo the Celesteela 500/500 Izoni the Naganadel 250/250 Raiden the Zebstrika 250/250 Ares the Charmeleon 250/250 (will be evolving mid-event) Ulysses the Dewgong 167/192

In a desert like this, the only place a dungeon could be was under, and down was where they went. The mechanics listed were not surprising: he ensured that his schedule was cleared for the day, and he specifically asked not to be disturbed. Whether or not his parents or brother would follow did not matter - he made sure to station one of his more trustworthy bodyguards outside his door, just for extra measure. Just in case.
This was going to be a long, long day.
In the new area, the temperature was notably cooler, but that was a blessing only joined in a fraction of a second. The tunnel was not unoccupied, which was stated as much in the description, but what it did not say was what else was in here. Even he couldn't help but freeze at the sight that sprawled before them. Many he did not recognize, and some he didn't even realize at first glance until he took a closer look, as the color being washed out of their fur, scales, and skin was uncanny and just downright wrong. How was this even possible? Was there a Pokemon that could steal color, and in effect, life-force as well? And yet, and yet they barely breathed - the slightest allowance in whatever was keeping them in place allowed their chest to rise and fall, but everything else was robbed from them.
They stared, and if Arthur moved into their line of vision, they stared at him.
Hie yipped in fright, hiding behind his trainer. Gou was also similarly frightened, with his whole body trembling, but he still stood in front of Arthur, preparing for the dangers ahead. However, he muttered to his Monferno that his flame would catch too much attention in a space like this, where the tunnel only seemed to be moving away from the light. He would call for him again later when needed, so he called him back and switched him out for another Pokemon that was more suited to seeing in the dark: Kanya. The Floragato quickly covered his mouth before he could make a noise at what he saw, knowing full well that his usual talkativeness was immediately going to be the death of them. He made sure to stay silent and stick close to his trainer until he was given instructions.
Arthur appreciated Sarah Lee 's comments, replying with a small nod. ❝Thank you. Your leadership has certainly been helpful in keeping us grounded.❞
However, the cautious atmosphere was not to last. The sight unnerved Josh Devlin 's Pokemon, and before anyone in the team could hold him down, he sped into the tunnel, right into the thick of danger and basically announcing their presence to the horde. He had to bite his tongue hard to avoid cursing aloud, and he swore he almost tasted blood. I can only hope that whatever's waiting for us is still much further below, or only look at Josh instead of us.
He lightly shook his head, focusing at the task at hand. Sarah had caught a noise, a garbled sound that reminded him of how retro games voice their characters without an actual person speaking. He approached the commander and saw what they were looking at: a cat, white and striking red, piled but peeking out of the bodies of limbs and paralyzed faces. The words it spoke were nothing like he had ever seen before, and for some reason they hung in a dialogue box, perhaps begging them to try translating what it was saying. For now, though, he gestured Kanya to help him pull the cat out, which meant moving the soft, faintly warm bodies aside. He tried his best to ignore the goosebumps on his skin as well as not lock eyes too long with one particular Pokemon. It helped that none of what they were moving could make a sound.
Eventually, they got the cat out. Its body was limp and made no attempt at wanting to walk on the floor, so Arthur ended up keeping it in his arms, kind of like how he used to carry Kanya back when she was a Sprigatito.
Rule #1 of Dungeon Spelunking: Never pick up unsuspecting cute creatures in a dungeon.
The thought passed his mind, remembering how this could easily be a trap, but so far...it seemed okay?
❝You're not going to eat me, right?❞ he muttered softly to the cat, but he already got it out, so he couldn't just...leave it. Man. He asked Ruby if she could try to heal the cat and leaving the Pokemon with her; otherwise he would end up carrying it the whole way.
Anyway, even with all of these bodies, there was a walkable path that they could tread. Perhaps it was a path walked by whoever brought these things here. He was reminded of How to Train Your Dragon, where the dragons were bringing sacrifices to a much larger dragon. This might be the invasive species bringing these Pokemon to the Hearteater...or something. He told Kanya and Hie to scout ahead, try to find anything that smelled particularly off besides the bodies, the sand, and the lingering scent of the sun. But don't go far. Ensure to stay within everyone's sight. And be as quiet as you can.
The trainer would inform Sarah and Ruby that he would also try to get an idea of the perimeter and see where the tunnel led. At this point, the hooves of Josh's Pokemon could no longer be heard in spite of the echoes in the tunnel. He walked forward, lifting his feet to ensure that his steps made as little sound as he could (something he learned as a kid, because it was not good manners to stomp on stairs, and he sometimes needed to sneak past people in the large, large mansion). He noted that the species were really all sorts of Pokemon, and he had no idea how long they had been here nor if they were all from Ostellia.

The click had Ruby caught off guard, not expecting her first attempt to be the right answer. It seemed luck, or perhaps fate was on their side. She recalled both of her Pokémon, hoping they wouldn't be in danger as soon as it opened.
She briefly wondered what Articuno would have said, about the nature of their choices as she watched the panels shifting and sliding to reveal the dungeon within. Perhaps something like, how the world constantly changes based on every single act one person makes, that nobody can live to perceive the true path of the future before it happens.
One just had to trust themselves to act as best as one could.
Ruby had no idea what to expect within, but she was already attempting to steel her own nerves as she accepted the UI notification. What other choice did she have?
She was here now. For better or for worse.
> YES, I’M READY
Bodies.
So many bodies.
She was not ready for this.
Ruby herself nearly went stark white herself, incredibly pale as the sheer depth of the situation washed over her. Panic had her sweating almost instantly, unable to tear her eyes away from their paralyzed, colorless forms. They were still alive, judging by their shallow breathing, but this was a terrible fate. It was an intensity that weighed upon her heart, dragging her down and down. All those poor souls, trapped, tortured... and nobody had ever known until now.
She could only hope that they were able to escape into their dreams, that they weren't stuck here in limbo as likely as that unfortunately was. What could possibly have done something like this time to them? Was this all the Pokémon that had once lived within Ostelia? What about the rest of the region?
Ruby was almost paralyzed herself before she realized Sarah Lee had called her Queen Rubella a few moments ago. Pulling herself away from her fear, she took a few deep breaths before nodding her head. It was enough of a shock to be called that in real life and not in the Dream World that it snapped her from it all. "R-right. We should be careful, going forwards. Stick close to your Pokémon, don't let this happen to them."
"Report anything strange you see, keep in contact with each other. Even if you feel strange or have a weird thought, please let me know. If this thing is psychic, it might mess with our heads, and I've had enough of things forcing others to do as they please. I want everyone to tell me if you need anything at all. We only have each other. If we split up, we-"
She watched as suddenly Josh Devlin dashed forwards atop the back of his Zebra Pokemon, and she instinctively winced. Those hooves clacking would almost certainly draw attention, if anything heard them within.
"... We stand less of a chance of being able to help each other. If someone wants to catch up, encourage them to wait for us? Do you think you could do that Sarah Lee? You're the lead here, I am certain they'd respect your words."
Still, that noise that spooked them had Ruby's curiosity. A white Litten, making strange noises. That wasn't like any Litten sounds she had heard before, and she had seen many of the illegal, yet loved cats coming through Mom's house to be familiar enough with them.
When Kyukon's Pokemon freed them, Ruby would immediately moved towards the Litten without any hesitation, nodding towards the other trainer in appreciation. She could absolutely look after them. For something to have survived within this place alone was incredible, but certainly not unchanged. She'd frown, only to finally resummon Darling. The motherly Indeedee would move to try and scoop up the cat Pokémon, should they let them, and check to see if they sustained any other notable wounds.
"Stay at my side, Darling. See if you can sense anything odd with your horns, okay? We expect its a psychic threat that lives here, and all of this this... confirms it to me."
[tangent="I am the soul of caution."]"Deedee."[/tangent]
"And you, my new kitten friend? Are you okay? Something must have happened to you." Ruby would speak softly, hoping that they'd understand her as she spoke directly to the Litten, even if she couldn't understand them. "We're looking to find... The Hearteater. If you can help us in any way, please. But I wouldn't judge you if you wanted to run, you've clearly gone through so much. Are you able to speak to my friend here? She's really nice."
Ruby would follow up the rear of her group as they passed through the tunnel, taking her time to slowly examine each and every corner in the tunnel as they pushed down into the caves. All the while, Darling would be focusing with her psionic abilities instead, attempting to sense wayward emotions of any kind. Trying her best to stay focused and remain on the task at hand, Ruby kept herself breathing in an out every few seconds. It was like walking straight into the depths of hell, with nothing but her siblings and their Pokémon friends at her side.
If nothing else, she suspected Ash's words that electronic communication being interrupted would hold true, but that didn't stop her from at least attempting to give them a call to report in. Someone had to at least try, even if it didn't work. Ash should know right away, that they found the bodies.

The pale bodies lay, bleached like shells in the sun. Ruby identifies many of them. As she moves past each one, a small tooltip appears. Very little information briefly flickers across the screen, but something about it doesn't seem quite right.
Litten is purring in Kyukon's hands, a strange, modulated sound, but allows itself to be relinquished to Ruby's Indeedee. She finds it is male, uninjured, and surprisingly heavy. It looks up as Ruby speaks, flicking its ears. It clearly hears her, but shows no sign of whether it understands or not. Still, it seems happy. Hopeful, even.
It does not speak again.
As Darling fine-tunes her mind, opening herself to emotion and mental connection, she feels something. First, two Ultra Beasts, closing in fast on a moving target in the tunnel ahead. But second, her power brushes lightly against something in the distance.
Something dark. Something crawling. Something witheringly old.
Something that isn't aware of your presence, yet.
PROBE DEEPER? [-5 Resources]
The blonde boy has already raced far out of sight. Sarah Lee and Ruby follow in a hurry, knowing without a mount, they'll lose him. Sarah Lee smells the danger coming— a cloying sweetness in the air, a sign of something wrong. It reminds her of her guildleader CLAW's cigarette smoke. Something has noticed the runaway Josh, and soon to notice you as well.
Sarah Lee has gained the team a +5 to Combat Rolls for the upcoming encounter By the time his teammates catch up with him, Josh has already found trouble.
As the blurred shape of Zebstrika flashes down the sandy tunnel, two pale shapes accelerate to flank him, one on either side. The hum of wings fills the air like zippers as the twin assailants use Quick Guard to bring Raiden's progress to a screeching halt.
They land in the hallway, blocking your forward path. Long, slender legs and flattering insectoid bodies bend and gyrate, revealing the bodacious PHEROMOSA SISTERS from your animes.
Still in Indeedee's arms, oblivious to the battle at hand, the white Litten suddenly perks up.
⌇⌿⌰⟟⌇⊑⊬ ⌇⌿⌰⏃⌇⊑⊬, it hums suddenly. ⌇⌿⌰⟟⌇⊑⊬ ⌇⌿⌰⏃⌇⊑⊬... Kyukon watches his teammates hurry after Josh Devlin, whose spooked and speedy mount has fled blindly into the dungeon. He follows more slowly, cautiously, footsteps softened.
As he rounds a corner, the white-haired trainer hears his foot come down on something unexpected. Water. The cavern floor is wet, here. It's the last thing you expected to find in a desert— but then again, who knows how far the dungeon actually is from your original starting point?
Following the trickle, Kyukon finds an offshoot tunnel that slopes uphill. Clear liquid trickles past your feet, smelling of salt and fish. Seawater. This passage leads to the sea.
EVENT IN PROGRESS: CANNOT ESCAPE a sudden pop-up reads if Kyukon tries to venture too deep into the watery cavern. Nevertheless, a small 'locked door' icon appears on his minimap, marking what appears to be an alternate entrance to Hibernaculum. Distantly, he may be able to see the ghostly-pale shapes of more Pokemon bodies just beyond the threshold, piled and floating in cerulean pools.
UNLOCK ENTRANCE? [-5 RESOURCES] The hatch is underwater. Kyukon will have to swim to reach it, and the distance sounds of battle from behind him indicate his less fortunate teammates may have started combat.

Josh leaned forward as Raiden sprinted down the tunnel, the boy clutching the reins for dear life. EXTREME SPEED was far too much for him to handle at his current skill, the rider screaming and begging for his Zebstrika to slow down. It wasn't until the burst of speed wore off that the Bolter could get his ultrafast horse under control and back to a pace he was comfortable with. As sweat dripped down his hair and electrolyzed on his mount's name, two Invasive Species caught up to him, the boy scout more than familiar with them from hearing their vibrations during the race at the Thunderworks.
Only these two didn't have the crazed Shalin Nariya weighing down their wings.
The QUICK GUARD abruptly stopped the horse, causing him to rear and Josh to go tumbling off. At the very least, he seemed to be obedient in combat. As much as he wanted to hurl Maragion at the pesky roaches, he needed all the firepower he had. "Area attacks if you can, everyone! There's two of them!" he shouted, though he was lacking in them himself. His plan was to soften up both of them so that the true combat master, Sarah Lee , could fell them in one powerful attack. Just as he finished his suggestion, a UI message he had been waiting for couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
Information> Josh reaches level 18. Information> Ares the Charmeleon is eligible for evolution.
Calling upon the strongest fire-type he had, Josh hurled Ares' Poké Ball between the two Pheromosa, raising his FIRE STONE high above his head. With his mastery as a KINDLER, he triggered an explosion of heat and fire around the Charmeleon's tail.
Enveloping his entire body, the tail flame multiplied in size. Only when the dragon beneath him spread his wings did they dissipate, the proud Charizard bellowing at one of the Pheromosa. "You leave my friend ALONE!" the newly-evolved Pokémon spat. His wing blades and claws glowed a brilliant red-orange, his large body one giant heat shimmer as he took into the air and tackled one of the spindly insects with a violent FLARE BLITZ. Were he to make crashing contact, he would grab his long tail and whip it toward the foe repeatedly, setting it on fire in as many places as it could.
Inspired by the evolution, Raiden got ready to Flame Charge the other one. "Hold up, Raiden!" Josh cried as he raised the Z-GLOVE over his right hand skyward. Its NORMALIUM-Z crystal gleaming a brilliant red instead of its normal white due to the master KINDLER's attacks being NEVER NORMAL, the BREAKNECK BLITZ turned into a fire-type move. One Josh had christened a name for.
"HYPERNOVA BLITZ!"
The Z-Move was just as fast and powerful as its Normal-type counterpart, though its enhancement from Josh's perfected class left a trail of fiery hoofprints behind Raiden. The great distance between each step showed just how fast the horse ran for the few seconds the intense rush lasted. After the discharge of Z-Energy, Josh felt lethargic from putting his own spirit into the attack, taking one knee.
Roll: Combat roll- The Pheromosa catch up to Josh, their QUICK GUARD stopping the Zebstrika cold and letting Josh get him under control. - Josh warns Sarah Lee and anyone else that can hear him to use area attacks if possible due to the enemy's numbers. - Josh raises his FIRE STONE skyward, evolving Ares the Charmeleon into a Charizard. - Charizard uses FLARE BLITZ on one Pheromosa. - Zebstrika uses Z-MOVE: BREAKNECK BLITZ (Never-Normal'd to Fire-type) on the other Pheromosa. {Combat breakdown}Raiden the Zebstrika: Breakneck Blitz Base damage: 31 Rarity bonus: 5x4 (20) Super-Effective: 20x4 (80) Z-Move: 10x4 (80) Class Bonus: 5x4 (20) Leadership Bonus: 5x4 (20) Total: 251
