BACK TO SCHOOL: FINALS WEEK!
discord cross-platform event / ends september 23
With students back into the swing of things, and the trainer school bustling with activity, Hydance launches into the last phase of their back to school program: finals!
Thankfully, Professor Ash believes that the best way to prove knowledge is through open-ended, essay style questions. All of these tests are open book, with the goal being to demonstrate holistic knowledge of the subjects you've been studying.
EXTRA CREDIT QUESTIONS
Battling: (P.E) Why do gym leaders traditionally use monotype teams?
Regions: (Geography) Following the horrendous lack of knowledge and learning displayed during the Regions lectures, the professor set the bar quite low for this test. Pick a region. Any region. List any three landmarks or locations in that region and tell me why they are important.
Biology: (Science) Should regional forms (e.g. Alolan Meowth vs Galarian Meowth vs Kantonian Meowth) be reclassified as distinct species? Why/why not?
Statistics: (Math) Statistically speaking, which Pokemon is the best, and why?
Trivia: (Literature) Which is the first Pokemon? A) Mew B) Rhydon C) Bulbasaur D) Arceus
Bonus Question (Can be used to raise your grade in ANY subject) Write a Dex entry for this hypothetical Pokemon: Pebblosa
This event will end on September 23, the autumnal equinox. Have fun!

In the silence of the exam room, Sarah's cracked knuckles sounded like a 21 gun salute, ringing out as a tribute to all the trees slain to make her textbooks and notepaper.
The exam was open book. Plural. And beside her was a stack of tomes covering everything she could have expected to come up in the exam.
On her desk sat a mechanical pencil, two erasers, and extra lead.
The timer started and she flipped over her page.
Biology: Should regional forms (e.g. Alolan Meowth vs Galarian Meowth vs Kantonian Meowth) be reclassified as distinct species? Why/why not?
She read the question twice, underlining the words 'regional' 'reclassified' and 'species', and pulled out two books from her stack.
She set to work.

Regions: (Geography)Orion scribbled furiously at his desk. He'd spent a lot of time skipping school for cooler shit, like smoking cigs and drinking booze, but it was only after a wise old kung fu instructor had given him a come to Jesus moment did he realize the error of this ways. Now he was racing against the clock in order to get his perfect grades and hopefully impress the Professor with his studyly knowledge (All S's with that attendance rate? What a fucking genius!) Either way, he needed this essay to fucking ROCK, and so he would put his pen down to the paper and let that shit rip. The Johto Region is a wonderful region located to the west of Kanto, filled with a myriad of unique pokemon species. Due to it's proximity to Kanto, there is a significant overlap of Kanto pokemon that are also native to the region, but up until recently Johto pokemon were rather scarce in Kanto. Given that the barriers to western movement are not lesser than any barriers to eastern movement, this phenomenon currently defies many explanations.
The Geographical features of the region are for the most part rather flat, the eastern edge of the region is filled with mountains that go north and then westward, forming a protective little basin for the res of the region to sit in. These mountain ranges are filled with two notable mountains, Mt Mortar and Mt Silver. Mt Mortar is considered to be a good place to train, with many macho fighting type trainers going out of their way to strengthen both their own bodies alongside their Pokémon's physiques. Mt Silver on the other hand is considered to be incredibly dangerous, only the best of the best are allowed to attempt to summit it's peak, and stories say that some people even find the ghosts of legends on those mountains. There is also allegedly a shrine to Ho-oh on Mt Silver, the flame enshrined inside is used to light the torch that signals the opening of the Johto Pokemon League Tournement.
Aside from these mountainous regions, the rest of Johto is relatively flat, filled with lush grassy routes with the occasional rocky face or two to hop over or climb up. Major highlights would be the burned down tower in Ecruteak city which is believed to have been the roosting spot for the legendary pokemon Ho-oh, though when it was burnt down by a lightning strike. During this event, three pokemon perished in the flames, but Ho-oh descended and resurected them, imbuing each with one of the powers of the disaster. Entei was forged in the fire of the burning tower, Raikou was embued with the spark of lightning that started the blaze, and Suicune was embued with the cooling power of the rain that put the fire out. Now badly damaged, the tower is home to little more than ghost pokemon and local forest life. "Fifteen minutes" one of the exam proctors would call out. "SHIT!" Orion hissed, scribbling his pen faster. At this rate he wouldn't be able to talk about Celebi or lugia, but at the same time he needed to make sure his commas were all in the right place and he hadn't done the thing where he flipped letters around again. Fucking hell, he shouldn't have skipped so much school otherwise this would have been easy street! In the end he barely managed to eek out a conclusion statement to his nonexistant thesis and sighed. Maybe the Professor would dig him for his abs instead?

Biology: (Science)
Should regional forms (e.g. Alolan Meowth vs Galarian Meowth vs Kantonian Meowth) be reclassified as distinct species? Why/why not? Orion squinted at this question, sitting in for another special exam to help boost up his grades. He was vaguely aware of how the various species and how they had different typing's and whatnot, but to call them their own species? He scratched his head and drummed his fingers idly on the desk, much to the annoyance of the other students to his left and right who seemed distracted by his tick. He supposed it boiled down to what you defined as a species, which made things harder because he couldn't talk about breeds of cats and dogs in this situation because the professor had no idea what the fuck cats were like outside of the game. Bouncing his leg up and down, the fighter cracked his neck, clicked his pen so the...penny bit was ready to write, and began his work. In the curious case of the many Meowth, it is my personal opinion that to classify each individual form of Meowth as it's own species would equal parts an exercise in pedanticism and factually incorrect. If we look at the definition for "Species" in taxonomy we find that the definition is as follows.
Species: a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction.
If we apply that logic to this example, we find that the many various forms of Meowth are in fact capable of breeding, and in fact their evolutions are also capable of interbreeding. Now, this example does open a rather curious debate about how other members of the Field Egg Group can also produce viable offspring, does that make them too some form of Meowth? Or perhaps is there some great progenitor pokemon that all other pokemon are genitically based on and are simple form changes, but I doubt the current system of pokemon Taxonomy is ready to have that debate just yet.
That all being said, the current practice of referring to these alternate meowths as "Forms" seems...weird. It's not like a Meowth can intentionally take on the "Form" of a Galarian or Alolan Meowth, I would opt that we instead refer to them is "Breeds" of Meowth moving forward. This puts an end to the Species debate while also capping off anyone from trying to call a Rattata a Meowth as well.
Satisfied, Orion would click his pen and set it down, raising from his seat and moving to turn in this essay.

Statistics: (Math) Statistically speaking, which Pokemon is the best, and why? Orion stared down at the paper, his eyes growing tired from staring at prompts. Just a few more to go, once he was done he would reward himself with a whole day of doing stupid bullshit that would no doubtedly bring him infininate mirth. Perhaps he and the Bee would get to more antics? Lil man Jam still needed some training if he was going to grow up big and strong. That all being said, he would have to put all that to the side, clicking his pen into click mode, he would muse the prompt for a bit before beginning to write. To call something statistically the best is a futile effort, because there are infinitely many possibilities in which one thing may excel and be great at, but infinitely more in which they won't be. However, when most people talk of Pokemon, they simply speak of how strong they are. In regards to that conversation we can look no further than the mighty god of pokemon himself, Arceus. His might forged the concepts of time and space and everything inbetween. The legendaries are simple avatars of power he's shed in order to create wardens of Order over the world. Even with all of this power that he has seemingly given up, modern contemporaries have managed to gauge his power in the form of "Stats," which as a form of measurement of potential for all pokemon.
Not only does Arceus have the highest base stats of any other pokemon, but he also has the ability to change forms (and thus his type) at will allowing him to be whatever you would need in a battle. If we were to be presented with a "primal" form of Arceus with his full might brought to bear, it would be likely that the world itself would shatter from sheer force.
If that isn't the Greatest of all Time, I cannot fathom what else would be. Orion sat the pen down and bit his lip, unsure of himself. He was toeing a line with the whole stats thing, and he wasn't sure how the professor would handle that. After all, while this was a game for him, it wasn't for her and he was hoping reading all of this wouldn't cause her to have some sort of fucking glitch moment like C0D13 and cause her to go on some rampage and get patched out. Taking a deep breath he would click his pen into sheathe mode, rise to his feet, and turn in another essay.

Statistically speaking, which Pokemon is the best, and why? "I'm here for my Statistics test, Professor," said a sly Bergamot Gristleborg, leaning against the doorframe of the classroom. Though her words seemed normal, the way she spoke suggested some tomfoolery was afoot. "None of your tomfoolery, Riddle," the teacher said with a frown, gesturing towards the desks. "Have a seat like everyone else, please."The room was almost absent of other students - since the test was open-book and people tended to play UNOVR on their own time, Bergamot hadn't been expecting to run into anyone else. If she had, she could have planned to cheat off their paper or bribe them for the answers or something equally devious and never-before-devised by kids in school. She took a seat, and the essay question was presented immediately. It was exactly as she'd expected: the questions had been leaked online over 24 hours ago, along with the knowledge that Professor Ash herself would be grading them. The answer she had prepared, however, she was confident to be unique. Confident this would be enough to raise her Statistics grade from a D+ to a C-, Bergamot passed her finished essay to the teacher and sauntered out of class, tossing her hair over her shoulder.

Orion found himself taking a deep breath as he prepared this portfolio. The extra credit question had been something he could take home, to prepare a dossier for. He was half curious to swing by the lab and rifle through some of the reports to see if this Pokémon had actually been found somewhere, just to surprise the shit out of her with her own documentation, but he figured that after a couple chuckles from her he'd be given an F for academic dishonesty. That being said, he would stride right up to Professor Ashe's desk and set down a manila folder down in front of her alongside a styrofoam cup of coffee, made to her liking of course. "Welp, I don't have much experience writing this sort of thing so I spent much too much time staring at other entries trying to decide if I was going for a more Zigzagoon vibe or a Diglette sort of affair. Hope this is to your liking enough to bump my biology grade up eh?"
Pebblosa- The Mole Type Pokemon
Type Normal/Earth Egg Group: Field and Mineral Gender Ratio: 50/50 Height: 1” Weight: 26 lbs Foot print: Insert crudely drawn clawprint here
Found in Caves and Mountainous regions, the subterranean Pebblosa helps carve out tunnels for both it’s pack and other earth based pokemon with the sharp digging claws on its front legs. Equal parts naturally inquisitive, but shy, it is not uncommon to see Pebblosa’s poking their heads out of holes in cliff faces or fields to observe surface dwellers, only to skitter back into their holes when threatened. They have a love for shiny things, and are often the number one cause of lost items amongst hikers, with signage near their dens warning backpackers not to leave their belongings unattended. Their nests are often littered with cans, watches, crystals, and rare rock formations.
Waiting to catch a glimpse of her response should she read it then and there, he would linger for just as long as appropriate and then nervously slink away.

Sarah looked down at the attached image of the hypothetical Pokemon, Pebblosa. It was undeniably adorable, with its pointed nose and little necklace of rocks.
Bonus Question Write a Dex entry for this Pokemon.
"So it's obviously a Ground type," she said, "but where are its claws? What does it dig with?"
And then she noticed. There was a clear blade of stone coming out of its tail! Everything came together in her head and she set to work on her entry.

Why do gym leaders traditionally use monotype teams? It was over. All the battling, all the muscle training, all the theory. Momo had been honing her skills for so long on her own that she'd forgotten what it was like to be a beginner, surrounded by other people. Novices. Rivals. While she was no stranger to competition she was new to the finer details of Pokemon Battling. Or rather, she had been. This is it, Momo thought, turning over the essay sheet. What we've been training for.Critical thinking wasn't her best suit, but she resolved to treat it like an Eiken test and summoned her best writing ability. She wouldn't be winning the High School Essay Contest, but Momo was confident enough in her answer. When the teacher called time, she passed her essay sheet up to the front of the class with the other students, resolving to accept the result whether it was good or bad. It was a question that had resonated with her— she, who had mastered aikido and had come to UNOVR searching for not only stimulation, but challenge, and new things that she might apply in her own dojo. It had nothing to do with being a cute girl. Nothing. Just for a moment, her confidence wavered. What if the reason they use monotype teams isn't for strength, but appearances? she wondered, her essay already in the teacher's hands. She couldn't stop her mind from following the thought. Pokemon of a single type are often designed similarly, with complimentary colors. Or perhaps it's like dogs, and the Pokemon a Gym Leader has reflect their personality, or how they want to be perceived. If so, how did Momo want people to see her?

Laguna was in cram mode. There wasn't much time to finish the final exams, and she had so many to take! She had admittedly, given up on the Math class. There was no way to fix that grade. She always did suck at math anyways. Whipping out her pen, she quickly began to get to work! An essay on Gym Leaders should be easy enough to write about. Gym Leaders are perhaps one of the most famous forms of Trainers. Their role is known throughout the entire Pokemon world, even in regions where their role typically does not exist, such as the Alolan region. They are still widely known and held in reverence regardless.
Said to be masters of Pokemon battling, powerful trainers in their own right. So why is it that they focus solely on a single typing of Pokemon? Focusing on monotype teams might seem flawed at first, with obvious weakpoints to exploit, but in this essay, we will explore the reasons for such a truth.
The simple matter that needs addressed, is that Gym Leaders are not trying to win every single fight. They are not the Elite 4, who's entire job is to fight the best of the best trainers and ensure they are worthy of even attempting to become a Champion. No, Gym Leaders fight trainers with a much simpler reason in mind.
They are teachers, first and foremost. Their goal and mission is to help teach and train the new generation of trainers. While some Gym Leaders admittedly struggle at this task, it is their job's statement to help people learn.
If a Gym Leader had a perfectly balanced team made from all types, it would be very easy to make a super strong team that could win fights against any new trainer. Instead, Gym Leaders typically have teams all consisting of one type to teach trainers how to deal with their respective element. A gym battle should be just as much a lesson, as it is an actual battle.
Just as a Poison gym leader prepares a trainer for how to handle powerful damaging status effects, Electric gym's often teach about paralyzed effects or electric terrain. Each type has it's own strengths and weaknesses, and trainers learning them, memorizing them, is an essential part of everyone's journey.
Why the Elite Four dedicate themselves solely to monotype teams, however, is less easily explained.

This next essay was... very simple. Just three landmarks and describe their importance. It seemed like it was almost too easy. Like even the professor was giving up. To be fair, she imagined it wasn't exactly easy. With certain regions existing only in side games, or in anime-only scenes, and locations changing drastically between games and anime, there was certainly room for confusion. The Johto region is a region built upon its connection with Pokemon and their importance to them all. Nothing better showcases this fact than some of its most important landmarks.
Sprout Tower stands tall, reflecting off a beautiful lake in Violet City. It is over 100 feet tall, held together by a giant flexible pillar that is allowed to shake from side to side to protect it from Earthquakes. A technology we know today as 柔構造 (jūkōzō), and applied to hundreds of modern high-rise buildings. It is said that the pillar was indeed once a 100-foot-tall Bellsprout, but the fact is not confirmed.
However, what is confirmed, is that it stands as a symbol of peace and tranquility throughout the Johto region. The monks who train and study with their Bellsprout there are wise beyond their years, teaching tourists and trainers alike that all living beings can coexist through cooperation. Going further to show just how far Johto's culture is ingrained in its willingness to work with Pokemon.
Bell Tower, previously known as Tin Tower, is one of two towers within Ecruteak City. An icon of the town itself, only a select few are even allowed to enter it. However, it and its sister tower were built entirely with the idea in mind to foster friendship between Pokémon and People. As the eastern tower, it was said to awaken Pokémon.
Not only that, but it was also said to be the roosting place for a legendary Pokémon. None other than Ho-Oh, a powerful Pokémon said to grant eternal happiness just by being in its presence. However, it has since flown away from it's tower after the other one was burned down, now in search of a pure-hearted trainer.
Speaking of the other tower, Brass Tower once stood just as tall as it's sibling, unfortunately now named Burned Tower. As the eastern tower was said to be a place to awaken, the western tower was a place for Pokémon to rest, even Lugia was said to roost there until the structure's unfortunate fall. Lightning struck and burned the tower, but that is not the end of its importance.
The birthplace of the Legendary Beasts, Suicune, Entei, Raikou. The fire caused Pokémon that were resting there to perish, and Ho-Oh granted them new life. It is said the lightning strike, a raging blaze that consumed the tower, and the sudden downpour that doused it have some relation to the three legendary Pokémon.
These three towers are an excellent example of Johto's relationship with Pokémon. Their bond and desire to work with them, to grow with them, and to understand them, caused them to develop these towers, which have now ascended into legendary status themselves.
If there is anything to take from this, it is that Pokémon and people can always work together to make even mundane architecture something worthy of inspiration.

Which is the first Pokemon? Now this wasn't a fair question. Not even close. It didn't specify enough! First pokemon in what? The Pokedex? All of literal creation? How absolutely mind-boggling. Ooooh, Hydance knew what they were doing when they made this essay question. How infuriating. Pokemon are by themselves mysterious and powerful creatures with abilities not even fully understood by humans. Even the greatest researcher has yet to unlock some seemingly simple truths of Pokemon. One of the biggest and most hotly debated questions of our time, is which came first?
In the beginning, it was said that there was absolutely nothing but Arceus. It seems almost too simple, but according to Sinnoh belief, Arceus himself was the first Pokemon born from an egg that appeared from nothing, one who created all Pokemon and potentially even all of creation itself. Considering the Ransei region looks startlingly like Arceus itself, it is entirely plausible.
And yet, Mew is the genetic ancestor of all Pokemon. Or at least, was believed to be the case before Arceus turned out to be more than myth and legend. Whether the Arceus that has been acting within the Sinnoh regions and beyond is the one and true creator of the universe is still an unknown fact, it has apparently been known to outright create eggs of legendary pokemon themselves for trainers who have been deemed worthy.
And yet, note the specific wording. Mew is the genetic ancestor, and yet Arceus created all of existence. It is equally possible that while Arceus created the universe, they used Mew's DNA to create the pokemon that lived within it. While it is also equally possible that Arceus created Mew itself, who then went on to be the genetic ancestor of them all.
Whatever the case may be, so long as Arceus exists and is proven to be as powerful as it appears to be, then it's undeniable that it was the first Pokemon.

Now this was something interesting! Make up a Pokedex Entry for a hypothetical Pokemon? Oh, she could do this for a living if she had the time! What a world to live in, where she not only got to be around Pokemon but invent creative ones too! Her smile was a mile wide as she got to work.
Pebblosa: The Stone Gut Pokemon
Type: Rock Height: 11" Weight: 30lbs Gender Ration: 10% Female / 90% Male
Pebblosa swallows stones to help with the digestion of its favorite prey, insect Pokemon. They prefer rocky areas with high plant density, ensuring they'll always be able to find a few bugs to eat whenever they flip over a stone. It is, however, quite easily scared by Bug-type pokemon larger than it, which is unfortunately most of them, and it retains this fear until it eventually evolves.
Pebblosa only chooses the smoothest stones to swallow, however, some are pickier and have particular tastes. If the texture isn't quite right, or the color isn't exactly pretty, they'll refuse a stone until they find one just right. Unfortunately, given they require at least one to help digest almost anything at all.
