"Hold up! I gotta get my math hat on."Yggy pretended to don an invisible baseball cap while pulling up his Pokemon's move lists from his UI. He stood there counting on his fingers as the others kept the tide of Patrat at bay. "Got it!" he exclaimed suddenly, jumping over a Patrat who swung a flaming stick at him with its stubby paws. The embers caught on his pants, but he was able to shake them off with a little leg-jiggling. Boy, if I didn't have heat resistance I'd have panicked way more, for sure!"Aw, you made me lose count!" he complained, trying to bring back the list of moves he'd had in his head. "Okay, Kitkat! You're first. Feint!"The Meowth wove towards the Patrat he'd jumped over, pretending to dodge to the left before slipping right instead, placing herself perfectly to rake her claws down the back of its head. "Next, Watson, you use Aqua Tail!" The Oshawott's cheerful call of agreement was drowned out by the torrent of swirling water that formed around his rudder, expanding, lashing out with sweeps of sparkling liquid. The water snuffed out the burning sticks with a hiss. "Knock 'em down with Brutal Swing again, Ducker!" Yggy called to his Farfetch'd in the rafters, who was still blocking more Patrat from dropping down on them. The mallard lay about himself with no hesitation, swiping bodies left and right with hollow thunks of his leek. "And last, Tigger!" Yggy squatted down to pet the Litten on the head. "You're gonna use Flare Blitz, okay? Don't hurt yourself too bad!"Fire cloaked the little black cat Pokemon, who took off in a streak of flame. It burst through the falling Patrat like dominoes in the path of a flaming arrow. "C-c-c-combo!" Yggy said, covering his mouth with one hand to make his voice echo. "Yay, that was perfect!" He was lucky to have such nice Pokemon! ...Now, when was he going to get that other one? BRUTAL SWING - 60 FEINT - 30 FLARE BLITZ - 120 AQUA TAIL - 90

Yggy Br00ks's math combo had cleared out the main room. The stairs in the corner stretched invitingly up to the next level, a physical representation of their success and growth. All that remained was to clear out the riff-raff.
"Yggy, quick, let me borrow your math hat," Big Bee said, carefully taking the invisible baseball hat off his friend's head. He pulled up his own UI and made some quick notes. "Okay fantastic. Meowth! You're up!" In blatant copyright infringement, Big Bee send out his cat. The little feline blinked one eye at a time, gazing wet-eyed around the smoky battlefield. "We need to draw out the last of the rats. Use Pay Day!"
The cat looked up at him, then convulsed, hawking up a pile of wet coins onto the wooden floor. They clattered expensively. At least this place isn't carpeted.
Patrat came running at the sound of cold, wet, cash, crawling out of the woodwork and scurrying towards the giant bounty, blinded by greed to the trap they are rushing towards. Two of the rats reach the hoard just in time for Clobbopus to grab them.
Tensed, powerful tentacles encircle the greedy Patrat. The sea creature, a giant to the vermin, pulls them up into the air like a movie monster picking prey from a crowd. More rats run for the gold, but an octopus had many arms. With a whirl of limbs, the half-dozen Patrat and tipped upside down and slammed into the ground. SUBMISSION
The early bird may get the worm, but it's the seventh, eighth, and ninth Patrat that get the gold, racing through the carnage as the creature of the deep pulverizes their kin. One of the rats grabs a whole coin and rolls it away across the floorboards.
It runs right into Grookey. They monkey grins, gums pulling back from its sharp, simian teeth. *Gulp*
Grookey let out a shrieking, warrior's howl that froze the Patrat in their tracks. They dropped their gold, covering their sensitive ears against the onslaught of furious sound. Big Bee did too, as his Grookey howled and beat its chest with his stick.
Taka scoffed. "Cleanup." With ears full of water and a room full of easy prey, he surged in on a low wave, sweeping the Patrat and the gold away with an Aqua Tail that sent a wash of brine and bodies down the stairs to the ground floor. "Easy."
With the room clear, Big Bee looked to the stairs up. He grinned at the others. "Shall we?"

As the thirtieth Patrat is swept down the stairs, another popup appears in your UI. You've received another reward!
The Patrat have taken note of your tactics, and your weaknesses. They know you're coming, and have set Home Alone style traps on the next floor.
As you make your way to the staircase, a flash of pink flies past one of the outer windows.
You have defeated 30 Patrat and unlocked Espurr (R)! The next reward will be unlocked at 40 Patrat.

"Child's play," Bergamot said, tossing her hair as Big Bee finished off the last of the rodents on this floor. She didn't bother to thank him as the notification popped up, her first of the Tower Challenge so far. Her face lit up. "An Espurr!" she exclaimed, leaping up to catch the Pokeball which materialized before her. She cupped it in both hands, beaming. She wouldn't advertise it exactly, but since nobody had let her steal their Pokemon yet in-game, this was the first Pokemon besides Guillotine she'd gotten. "Another minion for the Ultimate Villainess," she said quickly, pocketing it and looking around. A flash of pink caught her eye from the window she'd flown in from. Was someone else up here? Morgana hiked up her skirts, collected her Guillotine, and proceeded up the stairs to the next floor. While she was on her way, a bucket at the top of the stairs tipped over, spilling a hundred tiny ball bearings into a soup can that proceeded to roll down the railing towards Morgana in a rain like candy skittles. "Guillotine!" She blocked her face with the Piplup, who opened her mouth and shot out another BUBBLEBEAM. Ball bearings pinged and shot in all directions as they ricocheted off the bursting bubbles and Morgana had to duck as they bounced and rolled all around her. "Ugh! This isn't working."Morgana perked up as she realized she had other options, for the first time ever. "Espurr, go!" The kitten materialized on the steps beside her and Morgana beamed. "Remove this obstacle," she declared, "And the foul Patrat behind it, as well!"Espurr concentrated, and the ball bearings still rolling grew still, then floated into the air, surrounded by a faint haze of psychic power. They emptied themselves back into the soup can, which floated over to Morgana. She caught it with the hand that wasn't holding Guillotine. Curses. That was my dramatic gesture hand. There was a squeak from behind her as Espurr turned and sent the responsible Patrat floating out the window as well with a CONFUSION attack. That's one down, Bergamot thought, trying not to be discouraged by the thought. Espurr was looking up at her expectantly. <Mrrow,> it said, glancing at the can in her hands. She felt a twinge of something like nostalgia, or a strange familiarity. Had she met this Pokemon before? "Here you are. For your trouble," Morgana said, handing it the soup can of ball bearings. "I don't know why, but I think I'll call you Senga."PIPLUP USED BUBBLEBEAM (65) ESPURR USED CONFUSION (50) = 115

As Sarah made her way up the stairs she spied a tripwire. It was made of cheap twine, and stretched across the top stair. One end was tied to a loose nail and the other was wound around a swiveling spur of wood. A magnifying glass was taped to the wood in such a way that, when triggered, it would fall down and land directly in a sunbeam. Presumably it would then focus the sunlight and ignite the exposed fuse of a firecracker that was pointed right at her.
Sarah smirked internally. Externally she was calm, cool, collected, and completely still. She sent out Ron the Charmeleon and kneeled down casually next to him, as if checking out a patch of his scales. "Listen closely," she whispered into his earhole, "these rats have a firework trap at the top of the stairs. It will take about six seconds to activate on that step just above us."
Ron nodded.
"But we aren't going to trigger the trap."
Ron shook his head.
"Instead, we're going to set off their whole stack of fireworks at once."
Ron nodded vigorously.
"So hit it with all the fire you've got. Ready? Go!"
An inferno rumbled in Ron's chest. His eyes fixed on the box of fireworks. There were Sinnoh Sizzlers, Kanto Krackers, even a Groudon Cannon! He reared up, a true dragon in all but typing, and unleashed a gout of azure Dragon Breath!
The flames hit the crackers, detonating and spiraling off in a dozen sprays of multicolored sparks. Tremendous flames of deepest purple licked the ceiling, transforming into curled tongues of every color imaginable. Sarah stepped back, the breath pulled from her lungs by the gorgeous display of proud draconid strength.

This tower was tall as hell.
And when Furrlicity entered, all he found was dead bodies.
Patrat were strewn everywhere on floor one, piled up on floor two, strung fro the rafters on floor three...
"What in the hell."
It was also devoid of people, which probably meant this place was completely looted by other players. He wondered if this would be like those public Minecraft servers where every building you found would be stripped of whatever if could offer. Either way, he wanted to see what was up here; maybe someone had left a chest unlocked or dumped 'bad' stuff they couldn't fit higher up. 'Bad' stuff actually being 'Good' stuff when you had nothing.
He rounded the steps up to floor four, a few rubber balls bouncing down as he did, and stopped flat when he was met face to face with some other people. There was a pause as he glanced around at the gaggle of weirdos. Well, when one at the circus, better not complain about the clowns...
He plucked Tiramisu Ice Cream Cake Milk from his bag, where the Sobble had taken to hiding, and tossed her on the ground like one would a basketball they maybe didn't like.
"I don't know what's happening but I want to get free stuff." A tutorial box popped up when he said this, voice activated!, and he skimmed it over. "Who can tell me where a rat is?"
About that time, one ran out from a hole, trying to make it across the way with a box of thumbtacks. It had a makeshift army helmet on it's head and tears in it's eyes. This Patrat was green. A rookie. Too young for war. The hopes of his whole platoon was riding on his back. If he wouldn't get these thumbtacks to the guys upstairs....
Furrlicity stepped on it's tail and leaned over to pick it up. When he did, a sack of flour on a rope sailed over his head, missing him entirely. Ba dum tiss.
"So, I just attack this thing or whatever, right?" Tossing the Patrat down next to Tiramisu Ice Cream Cake Milk, her attacks popped up. All of them were grayed out except one. "Bind?"
The Sobble sighed and wrapped her grubby little grabbers on the Patrat, which screamed dramatically and collapsed.
From the trenches, the Patrat commander who sent that kid out fell to it's knees and cursed God for taking such a young life.
Sobble used Bind! (85% Accuracy)

Lucky could see Furrlicity Purrfection pass by as he bounded through an otherwise empty floor. The sudden sight of movement woke him back up. Lucky had been climbing this tower casually after everyone else, though this was unbeknownst to him at the time. All he knew is that he was waiting here on the Nasty Plot his Dartrix had cooked up-and somehow convinced him to follow. Lucky, for better or worse, was sitting as bait to lure out a shy Patrat he'd seen a few times on this floor for the past hour or so. The plan was to sleep, and Furrlicity had unfortunately put a stint on that plan for the time being. Lucky sure wasn't going back to sleep after that... Still, that didn't mean he couldn't fake it. He'd worked for various companies with a non-time standard job for years now. There was nothing Lucky doubted about his ability to force himself to take a nap on a dime, even if he wasn't actually sleep-sleeping. And lo and behold, minutes later, the foolish rat fell for the ploy. It approached poor Lucky, intent on stealing his stuff from his bag! But this was all they were able to think before everything went black. The Dartrix stood overhead the rat, wing raised. She had caught her prey. Now all she had to do was to wake up her master... Why was this so hard? Did he really fall asleep so fast? Dartrix used Sucker Punch! [Tower]S9B7lo221d1001d100

For the most part Manish was just trying to stay out of the way at this point. Not that he was really an active participant before, but even he could see that the Patrat were getting smarter…organized. Manish had listened to his parents talk about unions enough to recognize when one was forming and everyone knows that when people–or Patrat–band together, they are stronger. But seeing as how more people were starting to join their ragtag group of people, Manish wondered if maybe they were making a union of their own. Or were they the invaders? Afterall, the Patrat were already here. “Hey Ryan, um, are we the bad guys?” Ryan was doing his best to navigate both himself and Manish around all the various traps around them, but he had to pause at the question. <Bad guys? What do ya mean?>“Well, aren’t we the invading force? Like, the Patrat live here, right? Or I mean, it is called the cat tower, but um, if the cats aren’t actively here, doesn’t that mean that the Patrat have squatters rights?” Manish froze and put his head in his hands. “Oh geeze, are we attacking a passive group of unionized squatters just trying to find a place to live? We are the bad guys!”<Uh, wow. That’s a lot to unpack there. But I’m going to go with a solid no. We aren’t the bad guys. Probably. I’m mostly sure that we aren’t. Afterall, the Patrat are using improvised weaponry and I don’t think the ‘passive good side’ is supposed to do that.> Ryan pointed his vines at a Patrat that was wielding what looked like a broken off table leg. “They do if they are defending their home!” Manish whined. He was starting to spiral into another ethical debate within himself. Manish was moments away from a full blown panic attack when he started to hear a familiar drone and looked around. He didn’t see anything, but did feel his hand start to move towards one of his pockets. Almost like the droning noise was taking over, he wrapped his hand around a pokeball and pressed the center button. In a flash of light the droning grew louder and he found himself staring directly at Cereal. <Oh not this again> Ryan sighed. Cereal stared deep into Manish’s eyes, a loud <brrzzzzzzzzzzzt> drowning out all noise, including his internal fight. “You’re right, Cereal. You should use Covet on that Patrat” Manish said in a monotone voice, eyes glassy. Cereal nodded and turned towards the Patrat that was moving closer with the table leg held high above it’s head. <Brzzzzzzzzt> Cereal commanded and as if in a trance, the Patrat lowered its weapon and handed it over to the pseudo-cat. With a wide eyed nod, Cereal then wacked the Patrat upside the head with its own weapon, sending it flying down a nearby hole. The crack snapped Manish out of his daze and both he and Ryan looked on in horror. “Holy shit!” He yelled before instantly losing his color and looking at everyone around that might have heard him. “No one tell Mother that I swore!” CEREAL uses COVET

After using up all his brain cells trying to hit 300 power with his Pokemon moves, Yggy was happy to lend his math hat to Big Bee . "Knock 'em out, bro!" He was distracted from watching his adopted game-brother and the other players who'd joined them in the Tower, because something was happening with Tigger. After taking out the Patrat in the rafters, the Litten's body was contorting, back arching as if about to hack up a particularly brutal hairball. "Oh, crap! Are you okay, little guy?" Yggy asked. Avoiding stray Pokemon attacks and deceptive Patrat scouts, he loped over to gather the little fire-type up in his arms. Embers sparked along the Litten's spine, but Yggy's fingers passed through it harmlessly. "You didn't eat one, did you?" Litten and Patrat were practically the same size, there was no way that was possible. <It's 'kay,> panted Tigger. <Just... a phase.>Then he evolved. Yggy rocked back on his heels as the sparking cat Pokemon suddenly blazed in his hands. The sound of ringing bells filled the tower floor as the flames coalesced, forming a golden collar around the new Torracat. Yggy staggered at the sudden increase of weight, lowering the bobcat gingerly back to the ground. "So that's what you were up to!" he exclaimed, then felt a little twinge of guilt. Shouldn't Watson have been the first to evolve? The Oshawott was his starter, after all. He cast a guilty glance across the floor at the little water-type. Watson didn't seem to have noticed-- he and Kitkat were teasing a nunchuck-wielding Patrat over near the staircase. Is it because I'm a Kindler? Maybe fire-types just evolved faster because of his Trainer Class... Like a new toy, it made Yggy want to try the new Tigger out. "You're not hurt, right? Can you use Flare Blitz again?" He couldn't hide the eagerness in his voice. Having just seen the Litten use it a moment before, he was eager to see how much the move had 'powered up.' <Mmm,> Tigger said, bunching his hindquarters. His short tail lashed, once, eyes fixing on the nunchuck Patrat. <Yes...>The blaze consumed him as the cat tore through a full pillar in a cherry-red wrecking ball of teeth and claws. Chunks of wood flew in all directions as he punched the Patrat through all the way to the previous floor. A smoking, ember-studded ring remained in the floorboards where it had fallen, which the smoking cat came climbing up from a moment later. He limped a few steps and sat down, rubbing a paw over his whiskers. <How was that?> he asked mildly. Yggy had stars in his eyes. TORRACAT USED FLARE BLITZ!

"These rats are worse than the ones in the city. Jesus."
There were just so many of the little bastards.
They swarm Emperor when Finn lets him out to deal with the infestation, and he's forced to scramble for what other pokeballs he has on his person to make up for the deficit in power. There are those he's named, such as Caiman the Totodile and Dinar the Meowth, but he even brings out the unnamed Chespin, Litten and Espurr he'd stuffed in his box.
Emperor leads the charge with a stream of bubbles, soaking and distracting a group of Piplup while Dinar and Caiman savage them with gnashing teeth. Chespin anxiously remains on the sidelines, vines lashing out at any rat that dares grow close.
His Litten has none of the grass-type's reservations, rasping his terrifying cat's tongue along one of the rats until it seems paralyzed with fright.
Espurr doesn't seem to be doing much beyond purring, but apparently that's disarming enough.
If I never see another one of these things, it'll be too soon.

Big Bee noticed his friend manish was in trouble, talking up an ethical storm while the battle raged around him. "Grookey, they're amassing in the drawing room, go see what you can do," he said, and ran over to help his friend. He arrived at the tail end of the debate with Ryan.
"We're not the invaders," he assured Manish. "We're sightseers! We came here to get to the top of the tower and they attacked us on the way through! I'm pretty sure this place is listed as a World Heritage Site too, so they aren't allowed to even live here-" he was cut off as a severed beam swung down from the ceiling, missing his face by an inch and ramming into the wall hard enough to splinter the wood. "HOLY SHIT!" he shouted, echoing Manish's exclamation from before. "Uh, I won't tell if you won't. Orange! Clear out the rafters!"
Combusken bounced between two pillars, kicking up and up until she was above the Patrat. With a fiery screech she descended on them like a bird of prey.

<Asshole, watch out!>
But Finn has Pokemon speech disabled, so the only warning he gets is frantic chatter from his Piplup partner before it feels like he's hit by a goddamn train. Where Big Bee had managed to avoid the hell being rained down from the rafters, Finn wasn't so lucky.
With his pain threshold on realistic, he stays on the ground with a low groan. At least the virtual reality setting made it so that he didn't have the wind knocked out of him or any broken bones, but fuck did it hurt. There's a hammer that looks like it's from some carnival game swinging merrily from the jury-rigged contraption above. BONK! is written cheerily on its front.
"Kill 'em for me," he insists, flapping a hand at his team.
While his Croconaw sprays mud toward the snickering rats who'd tried to assassinate their trainer, Piplup pecks at them and the Meowth scatters coins... before seeming to regret her decision, frantically running around to pick them back up.

Allotta bounced the stairs, trying to be super stealthy and cool about it. Maybe if she could group back up with her new pack of weirdos, none of then would notice she had logged out quickly to go piss. Shame she had missed the last floor; looks like absolute chaos had happened.
"Hey, guy- ah!" As she got closer to Finnegan Fjord, Big Bee, and manish, a wayward Patrat, the last of this floor, rolled out some colorful marbles. She tripped instantly and with all the grace of a newborn giraffe. Allotta hit the ground like a sack of bricks- but not before trying to grab onto the nearest thing to her.
Sadly, this nearest thing was manish. There was a good chance he was either going down with her or she had just jerked his pants down. Whichever was funnier.
"Ough...." She was so busy recovering she didn't notice the new popup for the moves at first. Pokeballs rolled from her pocket- three of them. Her Sobble, Meowth, and the all powerful GUN.
The Patrat was quickly destroyed and the last bastion of hope for this floor terminated.

The next floor appears to be one of (surprising) respite. A checkpoint and rec room has been set up for the players here, complete with foosball, vending machines, and bunk beds. Since you're approaching the halfway point, it's time to rest up and chow down!
However, Goldilocks-style, Patrat ruin everything. The chairs have been sat in. The beds have been slept in. The microwave has been used to cook fish. Everything you try to play with has been sabotaged or already claimed by Patrat in some way.
Drive the interlopers from this room!
You have defeated 40 Patrat and unlocked SHINX (Uncommon)! The next reward will be unlocked at 50 Patrat.

Big Bee needed a rest. He entered the common room with the dreary exhaustion of a man returning from war. "Oooaurgh," he sighed, sinking down into one of the chairs. The Patrat had jumped on it, ruining the stuffing distribution, but it was still better than standing.
"Here, TKO," he said, reaching into hit pocket and pulling out some change. "Here's a few Bytes, can you get me something from the vending machine?"
The little octopus reached out, grabbing the digital coins with its gloved hand. "Wonderful..." it said, waddling off towards the machine, its head swaying heavily, as if full of water and complex thoughts.
TKO could only reach the lowest buttons, so he punched in the number for a packet of Nidoritos. The fire red packet hit the tray heavily, and TKO pulled it out onto the floor, dragging it back to Big Bee like a sack of potatoes. "Oh nice, chips," Big Bee said, reaching down to grab the bag. Something's wrong, he thought, as he picked up the corner. It shouldn't be this heavy.
"It's an ambush!" he shouted, letting go of the bag just as it tore open from the inside, revealing a Patrat holding a sharpened corn triangle. "AHHHH!"
TKO wrapped two tentacles around the bag, crushing chips and Patrat alike, and suplexed the tangled armful. The break room exploded in shards of chips and cheese dust, and the Patrat was knocked out cold. TKO picked up the unconscious rat and stuffed him into the nearby garbage can.
