Lacrimosa flinched back from the short words, as if wounded further. Oh, yes, it was all his fault and he felt just... terrible. It didn't seem like it was doing anything to Muin, though. But others were milling around, so he needed to keep up the charade.
But even that felt like a weight, with the heartbeat-pulses of pain, and how bright the sky was. Once he got somewhere more secluded, he'd need to do more tests. It wasn't like Bunya seemed the type to be able to do much.
What to say, though, to what caused it all? "No, I... What if whatever this is gets into the shrines? I couldn't..." He let his voice fade to an exhausted whisper. Both times he had gone, Mistra had been different, so it was likely different every time. That made it easier. "I went in and there was this... Sea of darkness. And a voice, calling for help. I tried to get to it, but going through the darkness burned." Another little wince, more cradling of his arm. Maybe a stray tear or two, who knew. "I... I don't know how long it was but... I realized the person calling for help was me. I- I think I passed out, and... and I woke up here."
He looked at thenlittle cat again. "It's a good thing Wisteria was here... I don't know wht I'd do without her."

Lacrimosa watched QUAXCEE for a moment, before realizing he would rather rip out his own antlers before giving her a shred more of this time. He glance to the other man, catching that bare flicker of almost-recognition. Which... sure. Lacri had no idea who this was, though, and Sarthor certain didn't match up with Lacrimosa. So, he opted for a doe-like look of confusion.
And then another npc had to tromp in. Mom, for some reason, charging through the landscape to beat up a groundhog.
This was not exactly the scientific endeavor he had been looking for. "I had thought this was a children's game..." He mused. Mom and QUAXCEE were bringing that into question, though.
He glanced back towards the other trainer, giving him a smile. "How wonderful to meet you, Luxe- I'm Lacrimosa." He looked over Yuze again- nothing specific stood out, but everyone had their uses. "Are you a new trainer, too?"

He was exhausted. The pain still had yet to abate, but Lacrimosa wasn't of a mind to do anything about it. What was he meant to do? Scrape and beseech a "legendary" for aid? Cleanse himself of whatever scant connection he had to understanding?
No. No, he could manage a bit of pain, if it meant he could finally accomplish his goals.
His goals should have entailed heading back, to Mistra, but unfortunately he had been dropped all the way back into the stupid settlement- And there was more idiocy to be found outside the gate.
Another player, some pink thing, and a chirping voice:
You too!
Lacrimosa paused, looking between the pokemon, and the other trainer. He offered a wan smile. "Oh, no, I'm sorry- Don't mind me." He said, trying to ease his way out of the situation.
QUACXEE did not care. Having selected two players, she drifted over to the tall grass.
POKÉMON ARE FOUND IN TALL GRASS- JUST LIKE THIS!
The sound of her voice was making his arm throb. "Ah- I've already caught a pokemon," He offered, trying to get her to shut up, or stop, or anything.

Lacrimosa glanced sidelong at whomever deigned to speak to him- but any disdain that would have crossed his face was masked with pain. "I- Um..." Wincing, he tried to sit up without putting any weight on that arm, cradling it to his chest. "I... no. I'm afraid not..." He shook his head a bit, stilling as it incurred a wave of dizziness.
This was... inconvenient.
"I went to that- the area the professor asked us to explore." He blinked up at Muin, looking pitiful and downtrodden. "Whatever's there is... so angry. I don't understand." Lacrimosa paused, a moment, looking at Wysteria, and then to Muin once more. "You... haven't gone, have you?" Like he was concerned about the other's safety, or something.

Lacrimosa was devoted to seeking out information wherever he could, but… this was so dull. A hollowed out tree full of birds. It was a pain more than anything, and instead of panicked he simply looked annoyed as he walked down the inside of the tree.
<There’s so many…> Wysteria’s baby soft eyes were wide with wonder that went unshared. She froze as a massive Pidgeotto swooped in front of her, screeching. <Lacrimosa!>
He glanced back at the squeak of terror. Right. He was meant to be a dutiful trainer. ”You can do it!” Lacrimosa called back at the little cat.
She blinked, confused. ….she could? With renewed vigor, she lunged, snapping at the bird’s wing and bringing it down.

Lacrimosa awoke to pain. His head was searing, every trace of light that hit his eyes nearly blinding. Every movement was throbbing, pain leeching over his skull and down his neck. He wondered, perhaps, if this was part of it-
But he forced his eyes open to the light, and saw not the corruption and grasses, but a cobbled road, a hill and church harried by tremendous storm. This was... the settlement. Briar-bane. What a name for it. More things crept to him- the pain lacing down his entire body. The cat, still there, bunting their head against his side. Did it really have nothing better to do?
Lacrimosa could waste no more time laying on the ground- For one, it was ungainly. And secondly... he needed to go back. Demand what he was owed. He moved to push himself out- a cry of pain escaping him as his arm simply gave out under him, crumbling back to the ground like ash.
Wysteria gave a panicked yelp, jerking back, and casting her eyes worriedly over the area. There had to be someone who could help- <Wait, please!> She begged, scampering over to Muin , looking up at them with glossy eyes. Hopefully he could understand... <My trainer- The Professor said not to, but we went anyway- Something's wrong. Please help him!>

Minutes? Weeks? He did not know.
what you're trying will fail.
Kazuki had long since stopped asking questions.
you cannot hope to accomplish anything alone.
"Ali," He wheezed, voice raw. Alistair. His assistant. An incredibly gifted student.
Lawful. Kind.
The words rang like church else. He hated them.
You need us.
Lacrimosa forced his eyes open, just a crack. Finally. Some progress.
Kazuki barked a laugh. you will suffer. And you don't care, do you?
Lacrimosa didn't try to pull away from where he was being held. It was fruitless.
"Please."
Kazuki laughed again. Very well.
And then just blackness.

trigger warning | LOVECRAFTIAN / COSMIC HORROR, UNREALITY, MEDICAL/SURGICAL TRAUMA
His heart was pounding so loudly he could not hear. The cat screamed at something. He did not care.
Lacrimosa dug his hands through the corruption as if it were a pile of leaved, coming away with nothing. He had to be here. Kazuki had not been there when he awok, so he must still be here.
His chest hurt. He had to keep looking.
The cat had gone silent. Good- good, then at least he could hear himself think. But the pounding in his ears did not abate, and a pressure was growing in his skull. Where-
There you are.
It was him, it was Kazuki's terrible voice. Lacrimosa whirled, teeth bared. Kazuki was standing there, hair in a neat braid, tucked into a surgical cap. His face covered by a mask. Body dressed in scrubs.
Right on time. Let's get you fixed up.
Lacrimosa lunged at him, nails clawing into his arm-
And a sharp pain in his head forced him down with a scream.
DON'T WORRY. YOU WONT BE ABLE TO FEEL A THING.
The trainer's eyes were black as he looked down at Lacrimosa, not even given the dignity of passing out from pain.
"Wha-"
He was yanked up, held eye level and dangling before Kazuki, who was just staring at him.
I'm going to ask you some questions. I need you to answer them. They won't be difficult. You just need to be sure you're still talking, okay?
What was this? What was this? "Fuck you," He rasped, before a white-hot rod of pain shot behind his eyes.

trigger warning | LOVECRAFTIAN / COSMIC HORROR, UNREALITY
Lacrimosa left Bunya's tent, walking straight for the barrier to Mistra.
He had to go back. It wasn't a thought, an opinion, an idea- it was simply fact. The cat was yowling at him every step of the way, and he ignored it. If it didn't want to come, it could stay behind. Or go find Kazuki.
The thought of the other man forced an undignified snarl from him, and he shoved his way through the loading zone.
Nothing happened.
There was grass, some far off trees, and the dark patches. Nothing shifted. Nothing changed. There was no presence, no feeling, no understanding.
The only thing that moved was the damn animal pressed against his leg.
Lacrimosa felt his heart, pounding against his ribs. Why was there nothing here? What had happened?
Where was Kazuki?
"Find that trainer." He growled, stalking away without even seeing if the cat would do as he asked. It didn't matter. Lacrimosa walked, fearlessly, into one of the dark patches. Waiting. Expecting it to welcome him, to impart that knowledge.
Nothing happened.

He couldn't stop his hands from shaking.
Lacrimosa had waited. Given it a few days. Logged out, transcribed every last thing he could remember. Poured over it. Logged in again, and instantly felt the rage return to him. But he could manage. He could be civil. Bunya was a scientist, after all. He could respect that. He paused outside the tent, and tried to compose himself before heading in.
"Dr. Bunya," He greeted, polite. Pleasant. The way any other player would. He gave her a smile. It looked correct. It did not reach his eyes. It did not reach anywhere, honestly. "I've brought by a sample for you." A specimen he never picked up. Perhaps the game had decided his desperate efforts at survival- ones that failed- counted, though whatever he had gotten under his nails still would not add up to this. It was contained in a glass vial, one he also did not have before. Perhaps it was for safety.
He held it tightly in his hand, feeling the cool glass against his skin. His hand shook.
He debated dropping it, and letting the corruption out. Or perhaps he should throw it at Bunya. She could see, first hand, what it would do. Surely a fellow scientist could respect that? He debated finding that man- Kazuki- and shoving it down his throat.
Lacrimosa, gently, set the vial down on the desk.

TRIGGER WARNING | LOVECRAFTIAN / COSMIC HORROR, UNREALITY
Lacrimosa stepped back as Kazuki reacted violently, sound pitching and straining far worse than it had before. It left his ears ringing-
And then, there was nothing.
Lacrimosa was still standing there, in the plains, a patch of darkness swirling at their feet. Kazuki in front of him, broken and in pain.
Everything was exactly as the game wanted it to be.
"What-" His voice was.. normal. Soft, pleasant. There was nothing mechanical, no clicking of keys on a keyboard, no strings of code whirring in the back. The man's name, too, had been ripped from him- only fuzzy memories of a hospital room remained. This was a game, a program, one connected to the mind and the dreams and he no longer
knew anything.
Lacrimosa felt his head spin. He knew, though, didn't he? He knew that there was code around them, programs that moved the grass and pokemon and even their own breaths- He just- He reached for it, mentally, physically, and nothing was there. Nothing responded. Nothing listened.
He looked at Kazuki, lips pulling back into a snarl, eyes bloodshot and wild, face morphing into something terrible. "What did you do?!" He howled, like a beast possessed, grabbing at Kazuki's arm again- but the grip lacked so much, now fully representational of the form Lacrimosa was taking. "You do not get to steal from me!"
The shadows behind him moved- and then Lacrimosa grabbed at Kazuki again, more desperately, with both hands- as he was being pulled. Not tethered, like Kazuki had been, but dragged, down, into the dark puddle he had once displayed mastery over. "No!" He shrieked, clawing at Kazuki, and then the ground-
And vanishing, swallowed entirely.
Wysteria had, at some point, simply stopped moving, eyes fixed at where Kazuki and Lacrimosa had been entangled. Her eyes were fixed on where her trainer had been, but now were unmoving. The swirling darkness did not move her fur, and she didn't seem to even be breathing- simply stuck, frozen, unchangeable.
Until Lacrimosa vanished entirely, and Wysteria seemed to just dissolve, leaving no trace of either of them.

TRIGGER WARNING | LOVECRAFTIAN / COSMIC HORROR, UNREALITY
Lacrimosa looked back when Kazuki began to scream. He had frozen there, trapped like a fly on a web, a clot in the veins of the world threatening failure. He drifted to the man, just looking at him, past him, beyond him. "How interesting," He breathed, like in the presence of a god, or lover, or something both. "How wonderful." He reached forward, not to help Kazuki in any way, but to brush fingers across his cheek, marveling at the touch.
"I can see you," He said. It was understatement- he could see every pixel, every facet that made up Kazuki, every neural input translated to movement, to breathing and blinking and slamming fists wildly. "How," He, too, was breathing hard- entirely unlike Kazuki. His eyes were bright, blown out with a wild excitement. "Beautiful."
Wysteria's experience was cared not for- for she was nothing, ai coding and a simple cat mesh, adorned with slim grasses and color. Kazuki- Kazuki was more interesting. Interesting in that he had wandered here- here- after someone else, and interesting still in all that he was. In pixel, in code, in thought. In person. He can see the frantic jolting of aliased edges, the thoughts, shrieking, i can't move i can't move i'm trapped i can't get it off get me out.
The dark shadows rise up, but in lieu of some hulking monster they simply settle again, curling around Lacrimosa like a cloak, like an affectionate feline, like a ghost. He welcomes the embrace, the knowledge, the potential.
"What's happened to you?" He breathed, circling Kazuki's avatar, now, fingers trailing across his chest and shoulders as he moved. "Who hurt you, hm? Atsushi Himura?" Every syllable is pronounced, given its own space to breathe, and his eyes never, never leave Kazuki. Never leave Atsushi, laying there in a half-stripped bed, a leg bound in a heavy cast.
Lacrimosa looks, looks at the strands interwoven, strung around Kazuki like a thousand million puppet strings, and grabs one, and pulls.

Lacrimosa looked... baffled, to put it kindly. "Singular?" He repeated. That- The logistics of that were... not something he much wanted to think about. Shaking his head aggressively, he followed after Taylor, looking at the outside of the cottage when she knocked. It was... pretty enough. Quaint, really. What one instantly thought of when "simple cottage" came to mind, complete with flowers climbing up a trellis. Did no one have any creativity?
And then a... thing opened the door, swollen and misshapen. Lacrimosa fought to keep from jerking back, just looking at Taylor from the corner of his eye- And, clearly, she was just as offput as he was. But a woman came up, soon enough, which did little to fix the creature that stood there, but answered one question, at least- the mutated thing was not their "mother."
Still, he forced a smile, letting himself be ushered into the house. Dark wooden baseboards and butter-yellow walls assaulted him as he entered. The couch even had a massive crocheted throw over the back of it. Hideous. There were pictures, up on the walls, portraits and photographs of countless other people. Were those, too, other players and "children?" What were they implying with this woman...
"Thank you for lunch," Lacrimosa said, a bit timid, trying to be kind. The kitchen, at least, was less of an eyesore. Glass-fronted cabnitry belied mismatch, kitschy dishware. There was the smell of vegetables and herbs, a massive pot roiling under a lid, and a cutting board prepped with fresh cuts of meats, cheeses, and toppings. He pulled at a drawer, at least willing to pretend- "Oh, the silverware's one over, Lacri."

He tossed aside another handful of gravedirt, looking over. The pokemon had split, again, Wysteria seeming fine, the spirit flagging. The cat twisted, looking back at Lacrimosa, mewling a little question. <What should I do?>
This question, at least, Lacrimosa seemed to understand innately. "Keep going." Her ears fell, tail instantly drooping. There was no need- the phantump would gladly leave now if chased off. But Lacrimosa stood there, watching, face impassive.
"I said," He enunciated, unyielding. "Keep. Going."

Wysteria lunged, jaws snapping around one of the errant branches, the Phantump rocking back as she did. It let out a small wail, and twisted and writhed, managing only in pricking Wysteria with one of the branches. The cat fell off, tail lashing as she picked herself up.
Lacrimosa, meanwhile, was not paying attention to their fight. His attention had returned to the graves, and he had begun to irreverently start digging at one idly with his hand. Seeing what was underneath would be interesting. Would it be something coded in, or something supplied by the subconscious? Hopefully the latter.
