Laguna had to admit, she wasn't entirely sure why she brought Bertha here. Sure, they were now swimming down in the tree to follow some green worms, which also didn't make any sense, but UNOVR rarely made sense. Who ever heard of a whale swimming inside a tree?
"Hey! Hey boss!" Bertha shouted out to get her trainer's attention, rolling around in the water floating. "I'm tired."
"You can nap later, Betha," Laguna began, her eyes scanning across the top of the water for another one of the Pidgeottos causing havoc. "Just keep an eye out, and be careful. Those worms have got to be going somewhere."
Sure enough, one of the aforementioned bird Pokemon soared down, attempting to wrap their claws around Bertha's round body, but found no real grip. With a lazy slap of her fin, Bertha yawned as the bird flew off. "Sorry boss, too tired. I'm gonna take a little Rest."
"Bertha, come on, we have to swim!" Silence followed, no response. "Bertha?"
The only sound was soft snoring, causing Laguna to groan.

"You know? That might be a fun idea! Exploring the depths of these waters would be interesting. A good idea to bring some swimming pokemon with us, though. Don't want to get stunned by those Frillish. Even if as Swimmer we can't drown, still a wise idea."
Her eyes would grow wide seeing the latest catch, grinning ear to ear. "Wishiwashi!" She practically leaped off her crate over towards the fish on the hook, wiggling desperately with obvious tears in his eyes.
"Oh, don't worry little guy." Laguna would speak, quickly capturing the fella. "You'll be coming home with me! I got big plans to take care of you!"
Satisfied with their catches already, Laguna's own rod was still in the water on a pure business sake. Might as well keep catching things for ol' Blarney, but she was quite satisfied.
"Oh man, I've been wanting one of those guys for forever. We really did catch each other's wishlist, huh?"

"That's, probably the smallest dragon you'll ever find!" Laguna laughed with a wide, genuine smile on her face. Knowing Sarah got to find the Pokemon that they were for sure keeping after all this was nice. Especially wonderful that she fished it up for them.
"Hah, who knows what else is down here! Just think, we're the first people to use this spot. If someone else had fished before us, they might have gotten that Tatsugiri first!"
Still, with the giddy excitement still bursting, she readied her line and set about fishing once more. Dropping her line into the water again.
"Just think, maybe we'll find something wild! It would be pretty poetic to find like, a Luvdisc or Alomomola for ol' Blarney. But... I'll be honest, I don't want one."

"You know, Wishiwashi is cute. And also terrifying. I think that's why I love it so much." She chuckled softly as she settled back into the calm of fishing.
It felt like something was nibbling at her hook with the gentle motions of the bobber, but nothing concrete yet. Perhaps it was being cautious? Pokemon were intelligent, after all.
"A Skrelp would be pretty cool! Maybe we'd have a bit of better luck finding them in the ocean, but maybe this leads to the ocean? I got no idea how far this underwater puddle goes."
A few moments would pass by with nothing biting. Wondering if she no longer had any bait on her hook, she began to reel it back in, only to surprisingly catch something! "Oh!" She exclaimed with a laugh, quickly reeling in the catch. "Got something sneaky!"

"Honestly? Kind of hoping we can find a Wishiwashi! Or, maybe a Veluza? Just something interesting that would be fun!" She hummed in thought, looking down into the water when the fish suddenly leaped up at Sarah!
Or perhaps more accurately, jellyfish.
Not wanting them to get struck by the poisoned tentacles, and no time to summon her own Pokemon, she just bashes the small Frillish on the head with her fishing rod, and it crumples to the floor.
And once again, the whole place smelled like lemons.
"Geez, good thing we weren't actually in the water." Laguna would mumble idly to herself, quickly catching the Frillish before it could attempt more harm. "You and your jellyfish, huh? It seems like they like you." She'd speak with a laugh, clearly teasing. "Maybe these waters are a bit more dangerous than we thought at first."

Law? American law presumably, given they were on the American server anyways. EVen still, she hummed in thought. She hadn't really expected it, but it was kind of cool.
"Oh! Well, art is kind of always nebulous." She responded with a smile on her face, once again dropping her line into the water. "Sometimes, I just doodle random things. Anything that comes to my mind. I admit I've doodled Pokemon more often than I can remember nowadays. Remind me to send you a few pics later!"
Turning to face Sarah, she continued. "But like, professionally? I've done work for all kinds of things. I don't work for any like, animation studio or anything like that. Mostly freelance work. There's no end to other people creating their own content that needs artists like me to help make their vision become true. Sometimes people try and cheat me out of actually paying, but I keep all my bases covered legally. So, there's that."
She sighed softly, eyes glancing back over towards the water. "Some more stable employment would probably be nice, but I'm making do by myself. Got my own place, able to buy groceries, and spend so much of my free time playing video games. Can't say it's bad, you know?"

Of course, online everyone always responded in unique ways. She didn't really know how to read people, but learning people's hobbies still said a lot about them. It just so happened that Sarah's hobbies were quite interesting. Past and Future, huh?
"Oh, I'm an artist!" Laguna said proudly with a smile on her face. "Studied for a very long time, went to art school, the whole thing. Sure, it's work, but I also do it for fun. It's uh... been a long time since I got out in nature." The topic certainly seemed tense, like there was more there than she was willing to share.
"But, uh, yeah! I also like video games, obviously. Though this is really more like a new world than just a game, I guess. It's fun exploring it all. Been helping out Professor Ash with some reports that... I should probably finish writing after we're done."
A tug on her rod brought that line of conversation to a brief halt, grinning as she tugged hard and began to reel in a new catch.

"Hmm, Galarian Meowth makes the most sense. I'm not sure if their poison is actual poison, or if it's like electric shocks, or ghost soul nonsense? Pokemon are weird."
She probably would have rambled about her theories some more, when Sarah caught a fish. Reaching around, Laguna helped by grabbing onto their waist and holding them steady as they yanked up the fish. Immediately, Laguna was in awe.
"Awwww, that's a Mantyke! And it's so big for such a little tyke!" She'd giggle, patting the big guy before catching them properly and setting them aside with the previous catch.
"We're doing well for ourselves! Maybe even after Blarney has found all the fish he wants, I might even come back here to keep fishing." Laguna would slowly drag a smaller crate over towards the pond, something for them both to sit on.
Simply humming as she watched the bobber, a question popped into her head as she turned to face her fellow trainer. "So, we've fought together several times, but I don't actually think I know you that well. What do you do for fun?"

The sight of the Frillish on the line had Laguna grinning ear to ear, pulling the jellyfish-like Pokemon up. She had to agree, there was something about it that seemed enticing, but she knew better.
"That, my friend, is a Frillish! They're a ghost-type pokemon as well, and paralyze people and drag their prey to the bottom of the ocean so they drown... On that note, don't touch the tendrils."
Laguna dropped her line back in the water, but only after making sure the Frillish was caught and a no longer a danger to anyone. "I have a hard time imagining them serving Frillish to cats... But what do I know? Pokemon eat weird things."

"Honestly? Who knows!" Laguna was readying her own line, adjusting her bait and tackle, trying before dropping her own into the pool. The important part was to keep their lines far enough apart that they wouldn't tangle.
"I mean, maybe something that lives in underwater caves? Or maybe something came in from the outside? Whatever the case, probably something the cats eat."
She hummed softly in thought, leaning back against the crate herself. "Either way, this is pretty nice. I haven't gone fishing yet. And in, well, the grander world beyond, heh, I haven't gone fishing in years. A shame, really."
Not even a full minute after she had dropped her hook, the bobber wobbled in the water and Laguna quickly tugged on her fishing rod. "Already? Looks like we have the best spot!"

Every other place was likely overfished, but Laguna had spent more than enough time at the Cat's Meow to know it held a great secret.
Well, in truth, a secret that only mattered right now.
A hidden fishing hole in the basement of the establishment. Honestly, it was kind of ingenious.
She had been waiting for her partner for this expedition in one of the hot tubs, and nearly missed them coming in. "Aww shoot," Laguna mumbled to herself as she climbed up and out, quickly drying herself off. "If only we could fish, while still being in one of the tubs. Now that would be nice." Slipping down the hidden stairs and into the basement, Laguna smiled with a wave as her bare feet slid across the floor toward the well. Wearing an unbuttoned Hawaiian-style shirt over her bikini. Didn't cover much, but she didn't really get cold either. "Well, well, well. Look who finally showed up. Ready to catch some fish?"
She quickly tossed her borrowed fishing rod and tackle out on top of one of the nearby crates as she continued. "I know it looks like I'm the late one, but I've been here for an hour already. I tell you, some of those tubs are fantastic. But enough about them, you think the saloon catches fish down here themselves to feed their cats?"

The shadows seemed to move around them, and Laguna's stomach dropped. Like a cold stone settled within, freezing her from the inside out, weighing her down.
"Gadot, I don't-"
"Shut up." They spoke in response, causing Laguna to wince. "You and I both know this is the only way. Unless you want to give up, I suggest-"
"I know! I know what to do!" Laguna shouted back. "You don't have to lecture me. I get it. I do." There was that lingering temptation to just, go out with them. Spare them the sacrifice, and go out together. But unfortunately, not only would that help nobody, least of all the trapped Pokemon in the Pokeball, but someone's words echoed in her head...
"A shared death is not a shared fate-"
"... Alright. I'll do it." She reached down, grabbing the star from Gadot's leg. The limb shimmered and faded, leaving them with just one. A feeling that made Laguna herself grow numb.
Instead of tossing it into the distance, Laguna would float the star up beside them, waiting for the Starcatcher to come and devour it before slashing with all her might at the mysterious creature. If she couldn't process her feelings healthily, then violence always worked.

Did the exit even exist? At this point, she was starting to doubt it. Did everyone else make it out okay? Weren't there other targets more tempting than her? At the last minute, she had to toss her final remaining star out into the abyss to draw the attention of the Starcatcher away from them.
But that also meant there were no other chances. None that she would accept, anyway.
"Come on, move faster, move faster-" She willed her limbs as if saying it out loud would change anything at all. Just don't look back. Keep moving. Don't stop. Never give up. She had to believe they could do this, positive thinking would help her push through. If only she fully believed in herself.
Gallade Gadot suddenly spoke, interrupting her repetitive mantra. "Laguna if we don't-"
She shut down those words immediately. "We will. We just, have to keep trying."
There was silence for a few moments longer before they spoke again. "... You're a wonderful woman, and I appreciate it. But if it comes to it, I will sacrifice what I can if it means you are seen to safety."
Laguna made no audible comment. There was that word again... Sacrifice. She was starting to hate that word.

"Laguna!"
Her vision was overwhelmed with darkness as she spun into the abyss, slammed by something she couldn't even see coming. Her head was spinning, and she struggled to focus.
"Laguna get up, or you're going to be eaten next!"
The words from Gallade Gadot suddenly snapped Laguna back to reality. Being hit by a fast-moving object out nowhere had her her deeply lost in her thoughts, negative memories threatening to bubble to the surface as she snapped out of it.
One of her stars was missing, presumably eaten instead of her right away, but her Pokeball had been flung out into the void again.
"Gah, forget me! Just go!" Laguna shouted once more, turning to try and grab the Pokeball out from floating in the voice once more.
"What are you, an idiot?" Gadot suddenly shouted back, and Laguna winced instinctively as her hand wrapped around the Pokeball again. She expected some chastising about struggling and failing to be a hero for something she couldn't even confirm existed. For all she knew, it was an empty Pokeball.
And yet, the words she got had a soft smile spread across her face instead. "We're in this together, quit trying to do it yourself. We didn't stop being partners when the spotlight turned off."
Tears floated out from Laguna's eyes, as the celestial partner floated back to grab their arm. "Alright" She spoke softly, one hand gripping tightly onto the dagger, the other still on the Pokeball. "Let's go."
The dark mass in the shadows approached once more, but Laguna this time would simply hold the knife out, ready to strike just in case, rather than tempt fate. Perhaps the threat of a visible weapon wielded defensively might deter whatever the Starcatcher truly was.

Well, things could have definitely gone better.
A jagged plate was her only tangible reward in her hands before things began to devolve. Something moving down in the abyss. Something was devouring stars one by one, and they were next on its meal plan for the day.
Laguna had no desire to stand around and find out. Injected with the Gorebyss Ink, her body blending in with the darkness, she'd turn around to hear orioncayge calling out to her. "Hah!" She began, catching the bandana he tossed her way. She began to tie it around her limb to attempt to limit the blood flow as she called back. "Yeah, yeah, excuses! We'll fight properly some other time!"
Twirling about in the air, she turned to face her partner in all this. Gallade Gadot. Their stoic face remained calm, despite the obvious nerves Laguna could sense.
... Was that how she looked deep down? Confident on the surface, but oh so obviously nervous? Like a scared kid putting on a brave face?
"Gadot!" She called out, twisting around in the air to take their hand into her own. "Let's blow this popsicle stand!"
"Right. These popsicles sucked anyways." With a nod and a quiet laugh, the two began to attempt to rush out of the void they found themselves in as fast as they could, following the trail of the incomplete constellation that had gained the majority of her stars. That is until her plans were drastically altered in an instant.
A Pokeball floating in the void, just barely visible from the corner of her eye, almost unnoticed given its black and blue coloration.
"Keep going, don't wait for me."
"What is that supposed to-"
Before her partner could finish their question, Laguna had already pushed away. Dagger in one hand, the other arm outstretched reaching for the Pokemon. Rewards of a video games mockery of a gameshow or not, she had spent too much time with these Pokemon to abandon any one of them. They'd be safer in her arms than in the stomach of the Starcatcher.
Her arm stretched out, finally wrapping her fingers around the Pokeball. "Gotcha!" Laguna shouted in joy, turning around only to see a sight that made her heart drop. That same jagged, black shape from before, difficult to see and all the more terrifying for it, was cruising through the darkness.
Straight towards Gallade Gadot.
"Hey, Asshole!" Laguna suddenly shouted at the top of her lungs twirling her fancy flaming kicks around to try and gain their attention. And sure enough, a mass of darkness began to make towards her.
"Viens me chercher, connard." Laguna mumbled in French to herself, stabbing outwards the very moment something got within reach. Here was only hoping she didn't get in way over her head, as usual. Presuming nothing went wrong, she'd book it as soon as she could, eager to get out of there.
