Patch 0.1 is here, and with it, the opening of Beta Island! This glorious, sunlit isle is just a hop, skip and a shipwreck away from the Asper mainland, and is full of lush, untextured jungle, buggy beaches, and Pokemon that run according to their programming.

The crash and pull of the ancient waves reminded her of her old life. Of a time when she could truly go outside. And more than that, it reminded her of time before time. At the beach she could feel the billions of years of life washing around her in the warm, summer waters. For Sarah, a day at the beach was like a day spent back before the world grew a crust of concrete and copper. She'd almost jumped for joy when the new event had been announced. Fishing? That meant hours spent on a hot beach, water washing over her bare feet as she reeled in new and exotic Pokemon. So that's why she barely thought twice when she got an unsuspicious text from her good friend Kath Ulu. Hello fellow trainer, meet me at Portabello Pond to participate in the current event. Catch you there! A little formal for Kath, maybe, but there was no way that Sarah would miss out on a chance to make some summer memories with her friend. But there was no beach in the Fungal Fields. Instead, a thick carpet of lichen covered the ground like sentient foam. Mushrooms that grew as tall as double-decker busses ringed the pond like ancient, edible sentinels, that was slicked with a bitter crust of frozen, pre-dawn dew. It was 4am and the goddamn sun wasn't even up. All of the online event guides said that the earlier you arrived at a fishing spot the better the catching would be, and this pond was completely uncontested and unsullied. In a few hours the sun would be up, and thousands of other fishermen would swarm this pristine locale for their shot at the new, rare Pokemon. But for now it was just her. She sent a quick message to Kath Ulu. At Portobello Pond. It's very cold! Where are you?

The walls were a pale green white, and there were no windows. She could not see the sky, yet the ceiling was not enclosed. It just kept going, and when she tried to look up it was as if the walls simply did not end. She couldn't see her hands, either, and she could only look around in 45 degree angles, just like in an early 2000's First Person Adventure Game. There was a rushing sound, but it was in her mind, not her ears. She wasn't even sure if she had ears. To make matters worse, there were awful paintings of trees and swamps around the place, and a photo of a bunch of Treeckos next to the bed (which was too hot and too wet). But Kath couldn't focus on any of that. She was too focused on the horrible thing that was staring at her from across the room. Actually, it was a lot like that scene out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the astronaut is lying in a bed facing off against the black monolith beyond the infinite. Except there was no black monolith. No. Instead, there was a white circle with a black outline. The exit to the pokeball. *** Treecko stepped foot on the fungus fields. She approached Sarah Lee cautiously, from behind. She watched the trainer look out at the water with an optimism and eagerness for life that Treecko found, frankly, enviable. Suddenly, Kath's phone buzzed in her pocket (Treecko was wearing shorts). At Portobello Pond. It's very cold! Where are you? Treecko stared at it. This was it. The moment she'd feared. She thumbed a message back. Don't freak out. Then she stepped forward. She tapped Sarah Lee on the waist, because Treecko was only waist high, and then stepped back again. She had a fishing rod ready, and a belt full of pokeballs. "Hello," she said. "I'm here to fish."

The stupid laughter tinkled through the Fungal Fields like hail on glass, reaching Sarah Lee and Treecko moments before the villainess herself sailed into the scene, fishing rod perched jauntily on one shoulder. "You're in my fishing spot, Sarah Lee," Bergamot said sinisterly. Despite her theatrics, there were dark circles under her eyes. "Who told you that the mushiest and shroomiest brides would be here in Portobello Pond?" Morgana had been spreading the rumor on her Tumblr, but she hadn't expected to reel in the snooty Valedictorian with her cock-and-bull story. What a stroke of luck! Or was it? Her gaze fell on Treecko. Interestingly, the lizard seemed to suffer no negative effects. Then there was a tap at her waist and she turned around to be greeted by a Treecko with a fishing rod. "I see," Sarah replied. It wasn't too strange to see a Pokemon out alone without its trainer, but why hadn't Kath Ulu come in person? "Where's Kath?" Sarah asked, looking around for her friend. "Did she make you carry all of her fishing gear?" There was no sign of Kath, and Treecko was holding her phone. Sarah's eyes narrowed. "Why would I freak out?" The tension was shattered by the shrill laughter of an impending nuisance: Bergamot Gristleborg. Sarah equipped her rod, holding it like a kendo sword. It wasn't baited, but just having something in hand while Morgana was nearby always made her feel better. "This isn't your fishing hole, it's public land," she said, breath steaming in the frigid air. She'd checked the zoning beforehand just to make sure. "And I'm not after mushy or roomy brides or whatever you just said. I'm after rare water types. Something you and your legion of common Magikarp wouldn't know anything about." Sarah grinned, satisfied with her sick burn. In a strange way, she was glad to see Morgana. Morgana was like a raven. A portent of interesting things to come. It was impossible to know if she heralded good or evil or merely chaos, but at the very least their morning would be memorable. She gestured to Treecko with all five of the non-green digits on her dominant hand. "Treecko isn't mine. She's Kath Ulu's. My Treecko is far more draconic, and refuses to carry my gear." "How far away is Kath?" she asked Treecko.
