THE
GAMEBellamy St. Pierre is not what he seems. Spirited and full of mirth, he's not nearly as carefree as he pretends to be, because the cares in his life are many, and everything about him has been carefully curated since he first came to be.
See, Bellamy Ignacio St. Pierre Ruiz grew up on tales of the old country. Tales of the beauty of Rouen, a city he didn't even set foot in until he turned twenty three. Tales of how different things were back in France. Tales of how, in seeking a better future, his great grandparents had sold most of their belongings, packed their bags, and had taken their children on a ship headed for South America when yet another war begun — in the way so many families had done during that terrible period of time. Bellamy never met these brave great grandparents of his, but the name St Pierre was passed down from them to his grandfather, from him to his mother, and from her to Bellamy.
Bellamy. French-sounding but not quintessentially French. Beautiful friend. His mother’s “best friend“, as she would often tell him since long before he even realised the pressure those simple words put on him. A single mother who had given up the job she loved at the French embassy in Santiago when she got pregnant with him, moving to Viña del Mar where her parents would help her raise him. A mother who worked herself to exhaustion to provide for him; to send him to the private school she could barely afford so that he could learn English, even then taking the time to teach him French before she managed to sign him up for French lessons, and later even violin ones to boot. ”If you know other languages, you can study abroad, and with a degree from a foreign university, you’ll have many more opportunities“ she would explain when he’d complain about how much he hated his school and what an awful time he was having. ”Belito, you’re going to go so far. You have to. For me.“ she’d add sometimes, after a few glasses of wine, when he’d put her to bed and resigned himself to the fact that he’d have to make breakfast for both of them once morning came.
All of these ambitions aren’t his, they were passed down like a precious family heirloom and are treasured because of the significance they have to someone who matters to him. The ambitions that, just as his great grandparents done had long before him, would lead him to be brave and work hard to move to a distant land in search of a potentially better future. He wished to make his mother proud, to quell her worries, and to pay her back for everything she sacrificed to grant him all of these opportunities, but in truth, even if he didn’t dare admit it to himself, he also hoped that things would be better if he actually managed to leave. A new country, a new life, an opportunity to reinvent himself into exactly the person he had always wanted to be. He loved Viña del Mar, but all of his life, everything and everyone had pushed him to want to leave the city. And so, ot was this hope and those inherited ambitions that pushed him to study, to work hard, and to go through the TOEFLs, IGCSEs, SATs, even IBs, and all of those exam acronyms — as a backup plan, not even the Chilean PSU was dismissed.
He aimed high, but even with all of his efforts, Bell knew he’d never be the doctor or lawyer or engineer his mother hoped he would be. Instead, when he made it into UPenn through a not-entirely-generous scholarship, he decided to aim for something more realistic and much more suitable for him: a modest business degree. Studying still was hellish to him, but in that environment, in that new place, in that chance to act exactly as he had always wanted to act around people who had never met him or known of his financial situation, Bell did finally flourish. He may have missed Chile and he may have missed his family, but he had fun, he made friends that he would always cherish, he learned so many new things about the world, and perhaps most important of all, he grew to be confident in himself.
Even now, Bell sometimes wonders if it was that confidence that landed him where he is now, or if it was just that luck was on his favour on the day he sent his résumé to AMZN Inc. among so many other places after obtaining his degree. Had his mother been right? Had it been the weight of the university’s name in his shiny new degree? The fact that he’s trilingual? The professional demeanor and work ethics that he developed over a lifetime of focusing on nothing but his future career?
Having proven himself as assistant to this important person and then that, he has climbed until reaching high; a junior position with many benefits, at the cost of being much more work than what he would have ever imagined. Something he’s undeniably proud of, but is he content with it? What is there to Bell’s life other than working? His love life has always been in shambles because of how much he has always prioritised school and then working, and when catching up with an old friend, the simple mention of playing a videogame and having fun with people there made him realise that he never made much time for things like those either.
He never had a Pokémon phase (it was the sort of thing all the rich kids in his private school who he desperately wanted to fit in with found “lame”), but maybe that doesn’t matter. Maybe having gotten his hands on a WorldScreen, UNOVR can be a game he can enjoy and for once not spend most of his time thinking of work. After all, even his boss seems to love it! ...And there come the thoughts of work once more. | INSIDE
THE
GAME Libra’s existence in UNOVR must meet two non-negotiable requirements:
- He must be cute, because of course he must. Why would Bell play any game if seeing his avatar doesn’t make him smile? Bonus points if he also gets heads to turn, of course. Maybe he’s a little taller than what Bell himself is (just a couple of inches, out of wish fulfilment), maybe his hair is blonde fading into a purple ombre instead of the soft grey Bell usually dyes his into nowadays, and maybe his features don’t look much like Bell’s own, but that’s not because he thinks this looks better. It’s really cute, and that’s what matters! He’s always really cute too! The differences are because of the second non-negotiable requirement…
- Under no circumstances must anything about Libra even hint to who he actually is, because if Tuesday were to find out that Bell plays UNOVR, his experience in the game would become… well… probably fucking insane, honestly. Nothing in Spanish. Nothing in French. Nothing Martín Marzán would take obvious interest in so as not to pique his curiosity (mythology, history, and art are out of the question, but Bell himself has never particularly cared much about any of these). Hence the name Libra, because while Bell does care about astrology and does read his horoscope almost religiously, he had the fortune of being born at the Libra-Scorpio cusp, and he has always told people that he’s a Scorpio simply because — according to him — it just sounds more interesting. Yes, he did put a lot of thought into all of this. He’s not stupid enough to underestimate his boss or to overestimate his own (non-existent) ability to lie about anything.
Maybe there should have been other requirements included in his careful planning. Such as actually looking into how the game is played, figuring out what classes he'd like to unlock, or even trying to learn absolutely anything about Pokémon (he can literally only name two as a result of pure pop-cultural osmosis, and those two are Pikachu and Bulbasaur). Why would he bother with any of that, though? A game is just a game! It'll be fine! It's not like it'll be super confusing or anything! Plus, if he has questions (which he will), he can always ask Saint. Not like that'll ever annoy his friend or anything.
