QUEST LINE 1: ASPER SAMPLING ASPER STORY QUEST NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTEDespite the bustling settlement outside the canvas doors, the Starter Lab is spacious and calm. Shelves of books, reports, replies, and specimens fill the space, dividing the hall into pockets, lanes and thin junctions.
Standing confidently at the center of her academic labyrinth is Professor Ash, your region professor.
"Asper's ecology does not align with my models," she says, her heels clicking on the new stone floor. "Former reports indicate that there should be numerous native species here, but based on the initial sighting reports there are numerous invasive species that have now become part of the ecosystem."
She sighs, and runs a hand along one of the shelves. She finds what she's after amidst a thousand labelled and color-coded folders, and opens the report to show you. Each double-page shows a pair of graphs, one of which is covered in spidery red annotations. "See this? Even the most common species like Patrat, Pidove and Lillipup have been substantially displaced. Patrat and Lillipup now only occur in a single patch of grass nearby, and Pidove nest exclusively in the settlement."
She closes the folder, and slides it back in place, perhaps a little harder than intended. "These models might as well be for a different region. We're looking for precision here, not some scruffy approximation. I know the corruption has impacted the environment, but there must be other factors I'm not taking into account. I need to remodel, recollect, and factor in the time since these initial collections."
Professor Ash motions to the holographic map projected above her desk. With deft taps she zooms and slides the image, bringing up the purple-tinted zone of Asper. You can see the settlement, and the three adjoining regions of unexplored wilderness: Birchwild Grove, Misty Timberland, and The Surge Steppes. "You can help by getting me a better sampling of what's out there."

Manish poked his head into the Asper lab and looked around. It looked nicer than the lab on Beta Island, but he did kind of miss how the old one looked. He took a few nervous steps in, “Hello? Um, pro…professor? I uh, I think I have something that you um, have you seen a Foongus yet? I uh, I saw on the uh, well see, I mean, you want to know what’s um, out there? Well, uh, I caught this Foongus in the Birchwild Grove.” Manish pulled up the sleeve of his western style button up shirt to reveal a groggy Foongus.
“Oh wait, no, hang on. That’s the wrong one. That’s Egg.” Manish rolled his sleeve back down before rolling up the other sleeve to show another sleeping Foongus clinging to that arm. “This one. Yeah, this is Egg 2. He decided to come with me when I offered to grow mushrooms for him.”

Kath Ulu burst through the door.
"GO GO DRILBUR!" She yelled, throwing her Pokeball at Professor Ash.
It boucned off the wall, about a foot from Professor Ash's character model, and landed on the ground.
Drilbur emerged, arms wide, confused.
"You ever see ANYTHING LIKE THAT?" Kath yelled, eyes wide and manic like a Psyduck. "You see that shit?! That's a Drilbur!"
The Drilbur said its name. "Dwilbah!" and smiled.
"So freaky," Kath said, and immediately returned it to its pokeball. "Seeya, teach!"
And with that, she was gone.

Professor Ash starts to look at the Foongus up manish's sleeve, then blinks as it is covered back up and replaced with... another Foongus. "Yes, I can see the first one was born in captivity," she says, making a quick note on the shape of the wild Foongus's cap and gills. She examines the mushroom Pokemon thoroughly and gives a great sigh. "I'm relieved to see some native Unova Pokemon remain. Of course, I would expect poison-types to be particularly resilient to corruption."
She flips to a new page on her clipboard. "Thank you for your effort. I'll make sure some research funds are transferred your way. Keep up the good work, manish."
When Kath Ulu enters the lab and completes her childish display, Professor Ash sets down the books she'd been carrying with a loud slam. She's given only enough time to confirm the Drilbur exists before they're off again, apparently only entering the lab to fulfil game prerequisites. Ash doesn't exactly appreciate the dehumanizing treatment, but she is a practical woman.
"Another Unova Pokemon," she muses, eyes fixed on something on the ground. She squats down next to where the Drilbur had briefly appeared, examining the smudge of dirt left behind. Based on the color and general makeup, it corresponds to soil samples taken from the Surge Steppes.
"...I suppose that's something."

"I've been hard at work," Sarah said, approaching Ash. "Check these out." She set three Pokeballs on the counter: Klink, Drilbur, and her pride and joy, Duraludon. It was her second true dragon. And it was gorgeous. As she put down the balls, a warning appeared above the Drilbur ball. "It looks like Kath beat me here. Well, no matter." She took back the ball. "Scan these two. Both from the Surge Steppes. The Klink is, whatever, but the Duraludon is a gorgeous specimen. He was quite a challenge to take down."

Orion opened the door, Achilles perched on his shoulder. In one hand he held a journal, the other a pokeball. "Yo Professor! I come bearing gifts of the intellectual kind!" A grin spread across his lips as he hunted her down. "The first" he proffered a pokeball. "A Yanma native to the Surging Steppe, these guys are either really common over there, really aggressive, or both. As for the other," he waggled the journal. "I uh, took some notes about my base observations of the Steppe, just some things I noticed and observed."
The notes read as follows.
My adventures in the steppe have been rather interesting, my only two observed pokemon are Klink and Yanma, the latter of which I have seen about three instances of and are incredibly hostile. The region is a vast grassland, though despite the tall grass (about up to my knees in some places) I have yet to see any grass or normal type pokemon. The carriage I arrived on was pulled by strange Ponyta with black flames, I'm not sure if that's some sort of variance like those with blue flames that are exceptionally rare, or perhaps some form of regional difference like Alolan pokemon? The main landmarks of the region are large spires of metal that loom over the place like big teeth, and bolts of lightning often strike these. One interesting thing I noted is that for a while after these strikes, the spires turn into large magnets that attack all sorts of things (like my spurs). I think these things attract steel pokemon, but that's only been proven once. I'm willing to bet that electric pokemon are also lurking around, though I will need to find some proof on that.
The giant shine feels very much like the bedrock shrine I encountered on Beta Island, and I'm concerned that if we aren't careful we might accidentally cause another storm type scenario. The air crackles with energy and ozone and acts very similarly to what I've heard the High Tide Shrine did. It even feels the same ambiently, as to what legendary pokemon it could be a shrine to, I have no clue. Hopefully if time tells, it will be in a good experience and not another nightmare situation.

Furrlicity strolled into the makeshift lab like he was the cock of the walk. Opening his menu, three pokeballs appeared in his hand.
"I went to the Grove and caught a bunch of shit. Could have got more but I ran out of room."
Calling the three pokemon out, Furrlicity showed off the Paras, Sewaddle, and the Deerling. The Paras hissed at Ash in aggression and lifted his claws up but otherwise didn't move towards her. The Sewaddle just blinked dully at her, one eye at a time, before inching over and trying to chew on a loosen paper that was within her reach. Deerling flicked his tail and shook his head, then randomly charged forward to headbutt a box of papers.
Furrlicity rolled his eyes at the pokemon's antics.
"... Sorry about that." Half tacked on, but he shrugged. "When I get more room I'll go back. The Grove is really nice." He was the type of player who enjoyed exploration more than leveling, after all.

It does not escape Professor Ash's attention that all three Pokemon Sarah Lee presents are steel-types, but she chooses not to make such an obvious comment. "Duraludon is a powerful Pokemon," she agrees after scanning the two Pokeballs. She swipes through a readout on their stats, pulling up a hologram of the chunky metal dragon. She closes out a moment later, pulling up a rotating Klink model instead. "And unlike Klink, certainly not native to this region— at least historically. A fluke, or a true migration, I wonder?"
More data was needed.
Sarah Lee has been transferred 50 BYTES! orioncayge is a pleasant surprise, and Ash looks up with her brows raised as he offers her the Pokeball and field notes. "You wrote a journal?" she asks, incredulous and (in no small measure) pleased. She holds out a hand. "I'll take it here. It must be significant, if you've made the effort to jot it down."
She reads silently, nodding when she sees mention of local Klink, and stops to re-read the passage about steel spires and magnetism again. She looks up to meet the Bandana Guy's eyes. "This is very insightful," she says. "And certainly explains the prevalence of steel Pokemon I've had reported. Do be careful out there— instances of strong magnetism have been proven to have negative effects on the human body. Nausea and dizziness are the most common."
The Professor gives Orion an approving look. "I look forward to your next report," she says. She gives you a small spray bottle of bug repellant as well. "Hopefully this will help keep further Yanma at bay. They can be aggressive during breeding season."
orioncayge has been transferred 25 BYTES! Furrlicity Purrfection's haul from the Birchwild Grove seems to interest the Professor very much. She notes down two more Unova Pokemon on her ongoing list as well as the Paras. "Paras are generally cave-dwellers," she comments, glancing up at Furrlicity. "Their presence in the Grove may indicate hidden caves or underground activity. Then again, perhaps they've simply found a new ecological niche."
She gives you a nod when you state your intent to go back. "I'd appreciate that," she says. "I suspect many strange and wonderful things we have yet to discover."
Of course, the opposite is also implied.

She'd found exactly one wild Pokemon so far that she'd bothered to catch. A feathered fellow that had attacked her and Big Bee in the Steppe. Meaning that if she could beat him here she could get points refunded to use for more catches. Something she was definitely looking forward to. The bird in her arms she stepped back into the lab in order to show it off.
"I found this bird in the Steppes. It put up something of a fight. I think it's a Rufflet."
The bird glowered at her as it ruffled it's feathers. Pecking a little at her hands. < I'll show you a little bit of a fight. >
But it didn't hurt. Not anymore. After all the Rufflet was her Pokemon now so it couldn't damage her. That was the price it paid for losing the fight after all.

"Hey, prof." To be entirely honest, she could have made do with not coming back to the lab, since tracing back one’s steps is undoubtedly a waste of time, and Tuesday hates wasting time. But! It could be argued that the whole point of deep dive VR is the interactivity and escapism, and for those things to be possible, it’s necessary for the game to be eternally adapting.
What would happen if she returns to the professor’s laboratory, telling her about her “so-called” adventures?
Time to find out!
"So, I was just in Birchwild Grove and I accidentally stepped on this thing when going in the tall grass, check it out." Out from a pokéball comes a Petilil, and the moment it does, it looks at its surroundings. Realising that its at a strange and unfamiliar place, the Bulb Pokémon shivers, all before loudly BAWLING.
Tuesday rolls her eyes, but at least the Petilil doesn’t seem to be scared of her... considering the way it clings to her leg, at least – peeking at Professor Ash from behind it.

Orion was back, looking somewhat sleepy as he trudged into the lab, two cups of coffee in his hand. One for the professor, one for him. Wedged between his body and elbow was the same journal he'd shown her last time, though this time with more notes. "Mornin Prof." He would start, setting her coffee on her desk. "Just like you like it, didn't know if you'd had your cup of joe yet but I..." he let out a long yawn. "Have not been sleeping well as of late so I need like two to get started nowadays."With a grin he set two balls before her. "Behold! A Blitzel and a Sneasel (pending catch finalization)" With a flourish he brought both out. "The Blitzel was tough, he went Four v 1 against my team, the only reason we managed to win was a lil divine intervention." He paused. "I'll get to that in the notes. Second is the Sneasel found in the Misty Timberland. I'm not super familiar with the area, but these seems to be something...weird going on there." Lastly he would set his journal on her desk. "I added a couple more notes based on specific incidents I encountered here. I've visited another shrine and had some...paranormal encounters in the woods." Entry 2: The precipice shrine seems to hold great power. I found myself fleeing there when under attack by a Blitzel, my pokemon holding him back for me whilst we ran. I offered another prayer to it, they seem to react to that sort of thing, and my wounds healed nearly instantly. When I returned to find my team, the surge of power had evolved them. Hades and Achilles were probably already close, but Ares was a new addition to the team and had trained significantly less than the rest. Could this be the shrines doing? Or simply the three of them rising to the occasion?
Entry 3: The woods are rather unnerving to walk through. Visibility is low, aside from the occasional light glowing off in the distance. Folk lore has taught me that investigating those would be unwise while alone, so I'm staying on the beaten path today. It was doing this I found...well, a crypt. Im not sure why it was so close to the road, but peering through the fog I managed to find a some sort of small stone building. When I investigated inside, I found a woman in white seemingly cursed in a coffin. I was commanded to wake her, and when I managed to do so she jolted from her coffin and...well I'm not sure, I lost consciousness. I woke up in the coffin, and occasionally find myself back in it when I wake up in the morning. I'm not sure if Im sleepwalking there, or if some sort of...magic is pulling me there. Further investigation is needed.
Entry 4: Last night was...well it's hard to say. The woods have an effect on you, especially at night. The darkness settles in and things just kinda...fade away. I was looking for nocturnal pokemon to help expand the catalog when I saw a light breaking the darkness. I set off to investigate and...well things get blurry from there. It was like, some kind of trap laid out by a spirit of dubious intent. A lantern on a post in the middle of a clearing with ten trees. On it, I found the words Deja Vu written in raised metal lettering. I investigated, finding nothing peculiar, I set off. After a while more of wandering, I found the same clearing, although I don't recall making any turns. Curious, I investigated some more, but something was...wrong. I have no idea how many times I wandered into that clearing, each time my mind grew fuzzier and fuzzier. No doubt I would have succumb to the trap had the Sneasel not woken me from that dazed state. I managed to break free by smashing the lantern with a rock, but I head some sinister spectral laugh fill my ears. I'm not sure I'm done dealing with whatever that creature was...

When she steps into the lab, water drips off her clothes and onto the probably-perfectly polished tiled floor. She had come here straight from the Misty Timberland, and after her encounter with a particularly aggressive avian pokémon, best believe she’s still soaked.
The pokémon in question, a blue duck that apparently had been given the ever so original species name of Ducklett, is in her arms; wiggling, struggling, and attempting to open its wings to break free. It even tries to bite her more than once, but despite her realistic pain threshold setting, Tuesday does no more than coldly stare ahead.
”This thing is a menace.” She declares, not even sounding annoyed. A factual statement and nothing else. ”Found it in the timberland. It took three of us to bring it down. Three.”
No, she doesn’t sound impressed, but she figured she should make Professor Ash aware of the pokémon she encounters while exploring Route 2.
She’ll have her revenge, just you wait.
Perhaps after logging off Mars will have duck à l'Orange for dinner.

After flattening a Deerling with his ass, Furrlicity figured he should go visit the Shrine and the professor again. He had been hard at work catching pokemon to show her. The Vulpix stayed in his pokeball; something told him that Buzzster Hooperham would visit and claim the glory for that particular cutie.
So, he calls out not one but two Shroomish and his Jigglypuff.
"Got these both in the Birchwild." He allows the professor to look the three of them over. Motioning to one of the Shroomish, it gave a malicious little grin and hopped around as if to get into mischief. "This one is really interesting. When I checked his info, he has an 'EVIL' label no other pokemon I've seen before have. This one doesn't have it." The first Shroomish he had captures certainly seemed evil enough. In a silly sort of way. The other one just seemed shaky and weepy.
"This one was really hard for my team to take out." Motioning to the Jigglypuff, he leans over and gives her a pat on the head. "It took two of my pokemon. She did this status thing where she put my Espurr to sleep. Almost knocked out my Shinx, too, but she took her down in time."
Frowning some, he crossed his arms and stood back.
"I've only been exploring in the Birchwild but I think we're hitting some type of rarity gap or... I don't know the phrase. I'm a baker, not a scientist. Anyway," Waving it off, he continued. "I'm running into a lot of dupes and I've heard talk a lot of other people exploring there have, too. We might need to do something drastic to chase the last few pokemon out of hiding if they're being that stubborn."
Showing Shroomish and Jigglypuff from the Birchwild!

"That is a Rufflet," Ash confirms, looking over the high-poly eagle pet as it attemps to savage the woman's pretty hands. "Another Unova Pokemon for my survey. Thank you, diva ."
She hands you a pair of thick leather gloves. "If you're interested in taking up falconry, we may have an agent in The Surge Steppes who could help train you." She sends the NPC's details to your UI and turns away, adding Rufflet to the ongoing list.
diva has been transferred 25 bytes! "Hello, Tuesday ." Ash greets you normally, as if she was expecting you. She was not expecting the sheer decibel power of your crying Petilil, however. When you look back up, you see that she has put a pair of oversized earmuffs on her head.
"That was close," she says, removing them as soon as the Petilil's tears have gone down to sniffles. "I had to break out my anti-Whismur ear protectors. Perhaps a bit dramatic, but one can never be too careful."
She types Petilil's name into the Unova list. "Thank you for the data. Interesting... the biodiversity of the Grove is becoming clear."
Tuesday has been transferred 25 bytes! Professor Ash greets Orion with less formality, scooping up the coffee and fixing the blond with an appraising stare. "You... look a bit worse for wear," she observes.
Her observation may be detached, but there's a note of real concern in her voice. She lays a firm, gentle hand on his shoulder. "Don't push yourself too hard out there. It's important to take breaks," she says.
That said, it's time for some light reading. Ash sits down at her desk to pore over your latest entries, sipping her coffee absentmindedly. She nods occasionally, and frowns once or twice.
"You're familiar with vampire mythos?" she speaks up suddenly. "It's hard to tell without seeing the crypt for myself, but you may have woken a vampire." As if realizing how out of character that sounds, Ash coughs and elaborates. "Or something that acts like a vampire, more precisely. Of course, true vampires are a fabrication originally meant to symbolize the rich, upper echelons of society preying upon the poor."
She touches her neck, raising a brow. "No marks, I assume?" She shakes her head. "Hmm. Perhaps it was just a specter. Still, it must feed off something."
Ash swivels in her chair, considering your third and final entry. "You know what Deja Vu is, don't you?" she asks, then continues just in case you don't, "Medically, it's what we experience when information meant to be stored in short-term memory gets accidentally sorted into long-term memory instead, and has to be retrieved."
She stirs her coffee. "Perhaps you found yourself in a long-term place instead of a short-term place. A place for staying, instead of a place for traveling through. It's a fascinating phenomenon. It's unfortunate the experience was so harrowing for you— I'd love to study it more."
Ash looks up with a smile. "Please continue bringing these things to my attention. It gives me... something to think about." There seems to be more meaning packed behind her words.
None of this has to do with the two Pokemon Orion brought in. Ash barely remembers to scan them. Her mind is filled with other things.
orioncayge has been transferred 50 bytes! Tuesday returns, and Ash's eyes widen when she sees the Duckett. "This Pokemon took three trainers to take down? Its regenerative power must be extraordinary." She scans it and a rotating hologram of the waterfowl appears above her desk. "I wonder if the mists of the Timberlands help fuel its Aqua Ring, or allow it to draw water from the air itself."
She has to admit, she's surprised to see Duckett in a forest. All her records of Ducklett and Swanna show a preference for open air, so as to be able to fly away easily from danger. Was it just the mists, or was something protecting them?
Tuesday has been transferred 25 bytes! The wild Pokemon lists have been updated.
