There was a deep, foreboding feeling in Heather’s chest. It was just like when Seattle was attacked. Everyone tried to defend everywhere, all at once, and the city fell like a house of cards. The coastline was indefensible, but so many tried, and so many died. Those who tried to flee into the wilderness were picked off like animals from the herd. But Heather had lived on, by holding out inside…
“The crater?” Grookey asked incredulously.
"The crater," Kath repeated, marching up the cragged slope of the volcano. "It's the safest part of the island."
Bulby singed his foot on one of the smoking geysers. "Uhuh... you sure about this, man?"
"Trust me," Kath reached the top.
The CRATER lay before them, a deep, volcanic basin of black and grey stone, punctuated with sulfurous geysers and boiling tubs of thousand degree mud. The air was choked with smoke, and no one was choking more than Grookey.
"Are you ACK- ACK- KIDDING ME?!" He spluttered in disbelief.
"No, I am not kidding you." Kath's eyes were dark, as if focused on another war in another place. "The coastline isn't going to last one second against that monster pokemon from the depths. It doesn't matter HOW MUCH we reinforce it, it's gone. It's the COASTLINE for goodness sake."
"What about the canopy?" Bulby still cradled his foot. "Man, heaps of grass types are gonna take shelter there."
"You're right," Kath nodded grimly. "That's why we're going to have to work hard to get them to abandon it."
"Huh?" The pokemon gasped in unison.
"We need EVERYONE committed to ONE area of the island," Kath pointed her index finger with a dangerous lack of discipline. "That means driving people and pokemon away from the canopy... by any means necessary."
"Any means necessary?" Grookey coughed. "Maybe the first thing we should do is make the place breathable!"
"I hate to say it," Kath conceded, "but you're right."
"I am?"
"That's why I'm going to go around the crater with GLACEON to remove some of the more present, anti-grass dangers, terraforming as much of it as I can to neutral territory. Some of the fire types might object, but it's common ground or no ground at all when that water-type crashes over the island."
"I'll make leaflets!" Bulby quipped. "I'll share them around the canopy, advertising the new livability of the crater!"
"I'll head to the coastline and initiate a widespread disinformation campaign to compel pokemon and trainer alike to abandon their homes and relocate their reinforcements efforts to the crater," Grookey said. "...baby!"
The three of them stared at the crater. Dark, smoking, and ever-foreboding. Yeah. This was the place.
