The tower was less a structure and more of a tree. A really, really tall tree that had a seemingly endless supply of branches that reached out to different parts of the sky. He knew that Josh Devlin was in a similar space but in another "room" - this was going to be a solo run, after all, and this was going to be a race. When he had to pick his options to start this tree, the game did ask him if he was sure he was going to go at this with no other party members. It even gave him a little special option where he could delay all rewards until the end, which may seem weird, but it worked out for Arthur because he didn't have the box space to house all of these Pokemon.
It also meant a faster processing time, and everything was now all on him. If he got walled somewhere, it was because he didn't have the correct Pokemon for the prompt, and that was going to be a problem. The solo climb also meant that he had access to all of his Pokemon quickly, and he could swap them out at any time. He kind of wished that this was possible in other dungeons, but then again that would just make it feel like cheating.
He let out a deep exhale. ❝Right, let's see what the Pidgeys have for us.❞

The first Pidgey appeared to greet them, squawking loudly and swooping down to meet them in the makeshift battlefield. The tree's layout is shaped like a tower - when Arthur went through the entrance, which was an opening at the bottom of the trunk, he found himself in a much larger, open space than he expected. Game logic, he decided, with the wooden walls surrounding him and towering above - looking up, he couldn't see the ceiling. There were still 9 floors to climb, and how many flights that would be? He had no idea. He decided it was best to focus on the Pidgey and the counter that appeared at the bottom center of his UI.
He pulled out his first Pokemon, Koro, and the Kricketot took the stage with gusto.
❝Koro, use Struggle Bug!❞
The bug type glowed a light green before releasing a various missile-like streaks, homing at the Pidgey before exploding on impact.

That Pidgey went down quick, and another would come to take its place. The birds this time around seemed to descend from out of nowhere, but it was clear that they were blocking the spiral, wooden staircase that was the way to the next floor. The next prompt appeared and it asked for a Johto Pokemon, so he quickly returned the Kricketot before the wild Pokemon could swoop in and do damage. He had to take a couple of steps back as the bird moved closer, as if taunting him, but unluckily for it, he had their next weakness lined up.
He tossed a Poke Ball to reveal his Snubbull, who immediately appeared over the bird and opened her maw, ready to bite. The Pidgey, surprisingly, couldn't react fast enough, and was trapped in her jaws and relegated to being a chew toy. Thankfully, the game was not graphic about this, choosing to show the Pidgey with swirly eyes and a couple of misplaced feathers.

Buru spat out the Pidgey after giving the bird a couple of wild shakes, no longer interested in feeling feathers on her tongue. <What's with all the birds?> there was a bit of a growl in her voice, but that was mostly how she spoke, and she was looking around on where she was now, realizing that they were not in an ordinary area.
❝We're doing a tower challenge. Gotta defend the worms from the birds.❞
<Worms? Yuck! The birds can have them.>
Arthur rolled his eyes. ❝I'm also competing with another trainer to climb all of these floors.❞
<Sounds exhausting.> a brief pause, <Are you gonna ask me to climb the whole thing?>
❝Only if the birds' weaknesses line up with what you can do.❞
<Hmph! Those stairs look too tall for my beautiful paws. You need to carry me. Or let Gou do it.>
He let out a sigh and just gestured her to attack the next bird, which was just standing there, unsure of what to do. The pink dog locked eyes on the Pidgey and let out a rolling snarl before running and leaping with a readied ICE FANG.

<I'm tired!>
❝Already?!❞
<I want to be carried!>
Arthur was reminded of one of his demanding nieces, who got bigger and bigger every time he saw her. Not in a chubby way, but in a time was passing and she was getting longer and taller kind of way. And also heavier. She liked getting carried, and every time he let her climb on him, he could feel his spine cry out. Thankfully, Buru was much lighter and did not make his back give out. He was annoyed that Buru was already giving up since she could still clear the next prompt, but he had a lot of Pokemon that could use Bite, actually.
So he let out Mugan, who he was pretty sure had way more energy than Buru. The dragon let out a roar before running to the next Pidgey target, which freaked out at the much larger and scarier Pokemon but could not escape the jaws of defeat (he used Bite).

<You try to run around and bite birds!> she was using her whole body not just to speak, but to shout, mixed with long r's and a rumbling that reminded Arthur of an engine. Buru was already in his arms, watching Mugan do some head shaking of his own, before he spat out the bird and ran to the next one. But because the prompt had changed with the next bird, the trainer reacted a little too late to stop his dragon from trying to bite the Pidgey, and they all got to see that "invincibility except to one thing" first hand.
Mugan was about to bite the Pidgey, only for it to use a tiny part of their wing, the very tip, to stop his jaw from moving any further. This clearly surprised the dragon, who felt like he was biting into a forcefield that he couldn't break through. The bird then let out a loud squawk to scare the dragon off, and it actually worked, making him yip and run behind his trainer, curling his tail close to his feet. Aw, poor guy.
❝Buru, c'mon, we need your Charm again.❞
<...fine, that's easier than running and biting.>
He put her down on the floor and she walked up to the very cocky bird. She then put her paws close to her face, giving the cutest look she could manage. The bird was awestruck, starstruck! And then fainted.

Arthur had to try to console the dragon while Buru went back to her trainer to get carried again, like the little princess she was. He found it challenging and uncomfortable to pet the dragon with his rugged, spiked skin, but thankfully most of the scaly surface was more of bumpy rather than sharp. However, that meant he had to bring out another Pokemon to deal with the next prompt, and even if he could swap out Pokemon whenever he liked, he still could only have a maximum of three Pokemon out at a time. Maybe a continuation of the arena match feature, so eventually he'd probably have to switch out someone depending on the next prompts.
Anyway, he sent out Gou to take out the next Pidgey, which flapped its wings loudly and flew towards them. The Monferno, in retaliation, used Mach Punch to strike back (have you ever tried to punch a bird?) The fist connected with the bird's stomach, and it got stopped in its tracks, falling onto the floor with legs up.
<...what are we doing?>
❝Doing the tower challenge.❞
<Right.> Gou looked around, remembering how the tower usually had other players in it. <Where's everyone else?>
❝There is no one else.❞ he was scratching Mugan's chin, and the dragon let out a cross between a purr and a growl.
<Excuse me?>

<So this was a challenge from the guild master?>
❝I'm more of a prop than a challenger.❞ he replied as they inched closer to the stairway that would lead them to the next floor. As they were walking at a much slower pace, he took the time to actually see what was in this room. It wasn't empty, by any means. There were snaking vines and soft trunks, intertwined together to create a strange and overgrown environment. There were many leaves, most attached to their stems, but a good number scattered on the floor. A wooden path could still be made out though.
<And you wanted this?>
❝I only see benefits to completing the challenge. Maybe we'll even get a special reward.❞
The Monferno let out a slightly frustrated noise, but then decided that honestly, this place didn't look dangerous? If they were just going to do nothing but punch Pidgeys and climb up stairs, then maybe he was getting his tail up in a twist for nothing. He supposed the frustration might've come from not being told about this ahead of time, but if they were going to be here for a while, at least he got to spend time with his trainer some more. He hadn't steered them wrong before...
<We can get out any time, right?>
❝Yeah this is pretty low stakes, don't worry. Only Josh is going to get punished if he loses.❞ he then pointed to the next Pidgey, scratching the ground, and told Gou to use Ember to follow the prompt.
The Monferno lightly shook his head before he released a burst of flames at the the bird. Thankfully, this area was much sturdier and fireproof compared to the canopy; the fire quickly died after making contact. <If you say so.>

<Is it really going to be just all Pidgey?>
❝That's what the quest said.❞
The Monferno had moved ahead, thinking that he could just punch through another bird, but like what happened with Mugan, this bird was somehow much more powerful than the others, easily parrying the attack and letting out a shriek. Notably, the Pokemon here didn't seem too concerned about attacking or doing damage to the Pokemon, but their indestructibility to anything that wasn't what followed the criteria was true. Gou, who hadn't gotten the memo until after a minute or so after, began rapid-fire punching the bird, but it dodged everything like a ghost.
❝The Pidgey here have to be beaten by specific criteria. Each of them seem to have a different one.❞
He let out a huff, feeling that he was just punching air. <You could've told me that earlier.>
Arthur shrugged, checking his UI before lowering his body with the intent to put Buru back on the ground. The Snubbull did not like that and started to squirm and growl, but the trainer semi-pleaded that she was the only one who could beat this Pidgey. ❝Just another bite. Pleaaase?❞
After a few more huffs and puffs, the Snubbull walked to the Pidgey, who was just kind of standing there with a dubious look, before he squawked in horror as the dog used Thunder Fang.

Ah, the Monferno kind of got it now, but truth be told, if this was supposed to be a place to train, well...it wasn't really all that great. The Pidgey didn't fight back - they just kind of flitted around or were just waiting to get hit, and that wasn't going to happen in actual fights anywhere else in this world. Nonetheless, he did notice that his trainer seemed happy by their progress, muttering something about "bytes". He asked if he could punch the next bird this time - at first he said yes, but when it didn't work, Arthur gave it another read before groaning.
Turned out that he misread, and he panicked for a moment, wondering if he had any Pokemon suitable, until the UI helpfully told him that the dragon behind him had a large tail he could use to whack the bird. Perfect!
Actually, their prompts have been pretty easy so far, Arthur noted. Was it because they were only in the first level, or was he just getting good rolls? He let his Druddigon (with some coaxing) swing his tail at the...how many-eth bird was this, the ninth? Yeah, that was what the UI said, and they would finally reach the last Pidgey blocking the stairway.

❝It's either you bite 'em or I return you in your Poke Ball.❞
<Why are those the only two choices? This is outrageous, it's unfair!> (it was weird to hear that in a young girl's voice, because even Arthur knew where the line came from, but he supposed it matched - it just made it sound more whiny despite the supposed seriousness of the words). <I don't have to bite them, and you can return Mugan!>
The dragon let out a whine; his claws pulling on Arthur's shirt, threatening to make a hole if he decided to pull a little too hard.
❝Well okay, you can do something from here, right? You can Growl at them, I think that counts.❞
Buru looked at her trainer with a Are you serious kind of face. Why was she being asked to work so much? Why couldn't Gou or the dragon or anybody else do it? She got that she was currently the nearest int terms of proximity and that the birds had certain conditions, but still! She just wanted to eat and nap and soak in the sunlight, was that so much to ask? There was not much sunlight entering in here, save for the pockets that allowed a few rays to come in, a little blinding to look at depending on the angle of one's gaze.
The last Pidgey stared them down; its brows as furrowed as it could be.
The Snubbull, on the other hand, did as told, putting her teeth together and letting out a low and loud Growl. Surprisingly, it did scare about the Pidgey, and the path to the stairs was clear. Huzzah!
Only nine more floors to go (oh God).

The stair climb itself was uneventful. They were nicely carved from the wood, made for a player's shoes instead of naturally molded, so it was even and smooth, just a little tiring on the legs because he was out of shape. After climbing not too many steps, the stairs would open to a much more breezy room, as there were more openings that led to large branches outside of the tree, and more sunlight was coming in.
Also, the Pidgeys here had bread on their wings, held together by game logic. Were those hats? Were they speaking French?? (Arthur was not well-versed in languages at all, and at the speed of what they were squawking, he couldn't tell whether it was some kind of French or Italian or Spanish or something else).
❝These birds in the middle of migration or something?❞
The English angered them, a banned language, and one immediately rushed in. Gou parried the bird away, but the invincibility meant that it didn't break a sweat. Buru let out a yelp in retort to being withdrawn, but he had no choice since none of his current Pokemon hit the criteria. He then let out his Vulpix, who swished her bangs to the side of her face before looking back at her trainer with a gaze that asked, Why are these birds European?
The answer was that he had no idea, and just asked her to use Ember on it, so she waited for an opportunity to shoot flames without hitting Gou, and burned the hon hon baguette Pidgey to scare them off.

Damn! And he just withdrew Buru too, she was going to throw a fit. He quickly apologized to Rou and said he might need her later, and the fire type took it in stride. The Snubbull was brought out again right after, and instead of throwing a hissy fit right away, she just looked at him with a deadpan expression. <I told you, you can just let Mugan take a break!>
But the dragon was clinging to Arthur's leg every time they stop and stood, and he found it a little bit adorable, actually. Okay, maybe he was uncomfortable with all of these weird Pokemon flitting about. Fair enough, he withdrew Mugan as well for the time being so that he could take a break. Maybe he was overstimulated or something, which was something he learned when one of the family friend's kids threw a tantrum in their house that one visit.
<So what do you need me to do?>
❝Oh you gotta act cute again. Charm 'em.❞
<Is there no other move I can use?>
❝I thought you were tired of biting?❞
But it was clear that the Snubbull found her using Charm to be either boring or weird that it was an effective attack, when all it normally did was just catch a Pokemon off-guard. Anyway, the cussing Pidgey seemed to like it, and he wasn't sure about this, but was the Pidgey starting to..flirt with his dog?

<This bird's creeping me out!>
The other Pidgeys in the room squawked in anger, using their baguettes as beat sticks and hitting the ground in a weird cacophony. With the next prompt up as well as the next target, Arthur decided to step in, shoo the bird (he could've sworn he heard the Pidgey click his tongue and say some more derogatory things at him), and then bring out another one of his Pokemon that fit the criteria.
<oOOooOO?>
With Tier 1 Swimmer equipped, the Mantyke was pleased to find that she was floating in mid-air, and she could swim around freely without obstruction. He commanded her to use Tackle and knock that one bird with the red scarf and blue beret off its feet, and he could hear a happy cry as she swooped in, true to her flying type.

And the next prompt aligned in Anta's favor: another bird, this time with a green scarf and a mustache, was picked from the slowly dwindling Eurobirds. He pointed at the target and ordered her to use Water Gun. She pulled her body back for a moment, gearing up her attack, before releasing a burst stream of water, forceful like a high-powered faucet, and did a direct hit on the stached bird. It didn't stand a chance!
Gou crossed his arms, watching the whole thing unfold. This was definitely kind of like a rapid-fire beat down, but he remembered his trainer saying that they had a hundred to go through, and they were just at the beginning! Should he do something else to pass the time? But sparring would just use up unnecessary energy that he might need later...
