Whew! Okay, that was probably the shortest detour so far compared to all of the other stuff he had to do. With the newly obtained Mudbray in his hand, he threw out Gou's Poke Ball as well, letting out the Monferno for support while the tiny brown horse neighed and lightly clopped his hooves on the wood. <Righto! What's happenin'?>
❝Uh, well, you need to hit a bird.❞ Arthur realized the dilemma too late - Mudbray was a ground type Pokemon, and the birds, well, were flying type. Immunities didn't exist in UNOVR apparently, but there was still the matter of getting the bird to fly down here to get hit. In the end, he asked Gou to capture a bird, and when he brought it down, the Mudbray put on a yellow glow and ran with a timed Rock Smash, making sure not to hit the Monferno by accident.

So as it turned out, the next prompt was also new, and he realized none of his Pokemon virtually had a psychic type move. He panicked, flicking through his limited amount of Pokemon, before realizing that there was a singular move that counted, even if it was not an attacking one. Right, well, he wasn't going to go out and try to catch another Pokemon if he didn't have to - he didn't want to mess with RNG. Thus, he pulled out Anta's Poke Ball once more and commanded the Mantyke to use Agility.
At a Pokemon? He could feel Anta's question when she looked at him with a confused expression.
He shrugged in response. ❝I guess just try to dodge them instead.❞
Anta let out a few bubble noises before swimming up in the air to one of the Pidgeys and then sticking her tongue out. Somehow that was enough to goad the bird to attack, to which the Mantyke glowed slightly. When the bird tried to strike the Mantyke, it only hit the afterimage, and Anta effortlessly appeared a little further away, giggling.

Thankfully the next prompt swiveled back into something familiar, and it was something that Gou could do. With the Pidgey trying to attack the Mantyke but failing, it basically gave the Monferno an easy opportunity to leap over to where they were (by traversing through a vine swing) and then landing a speedy Mach Punch on the frustrated but oblivious bird. Even if they lacked in strength besides their invincibility, they certainly did not lack in numbers. The Monferno was frankly getting tired of all of this and wanted this done as soon as possible.
<Are we close to a hundred yet?>
❝We're not even at fifty.❞ Arthur sounded equally as defeated, but at the same time he couldn't really give up, not when they got this far.
The Monferno felt then the urge to curse like his trainer, but he kept it to himself.

<How much more until fifty then?>
❝Actually, just two more!❞ he shouted back, still on the ground-level of the canopy. It definitely seemed like the Pidgeys were lessening, and the game was insisting that they only need to hit two more before, he supposed, the rest would retreat. Then where were the other fifty Pidgeys they had to beat down? Were they somewhere past the tree? Did they have to climb into the clouds or something?? That would be pretty insane, but also pretty cool.
He gave the order for Gou to use another set of Fury Swipes, to which the Monferno grumbled before quickly locking on a flying Pidgey, which was hovering somewhere near a branch. So he just needed to swing towards it, let go of the vine at the right time, and let his claws glow before he swiped at the bird. This felt like deja vu.

❝Actually I might've miscounted!❞ the numbers on the prompts versus how many Pidgey they needed to beat confused him. So was it one more? Two more? Well, so long as the number was increasing, it was better than nothing. This next prompt asked for a Galar Pokemon once more (and Arthur withdrew Mudbray earlier since that was his first time out of the Poke Ball), so he let out Bari, who popped out energetically and was ready (to eat).
<Remember, I'm vegan!>
❝I didn't ask you to eat a bird.❞ Arthur retorted before telling him to get up there and Bite a Pidgey to finally get them out of here (or was it in the next one? He was still confused). The squirrel let out a squeak as a bit of a war cry before running up the tree and then when he gained enough height, jumped off the trunk and landed on a passing Pidgey before letting out a crazed noise and then chomping on the bird's back. It was pretty gnarly.

When the Pidgey disappeared after the squirrel was doing some chomping (it wasn't deep, but it was probably still painful, and it was enough to clear the prompt to respawn the Pokemon), he caught Bari by returning him back to his Poke Ball and then letting out the only Pokemon he had that had an electric type move: Buru. The Snubbull hadn't seen the floor climb for some time, so she was surprised to find that they were in a completely different floor, with the sky peaking out from the canopy, and a lot, lot of vines and leaves.
<You want me to climb that?!>
❝Well no, you just need to bite a bird.❞ (biting seemed to be a recurring motif, and so was punching, and so was slashing things with claws).
But of course there was the matter of how to get up there when the Snubbull was definitely not equipped to scale trees compared to Arthur's other Pokemon. Thankfully, there was a Pidgey on the ground level - maybe the game was telling them to hurry up and finish this already instead of staying too long. Thankful for the opportunity, Arthur commanded the Snubbull to run forth and take them home, and Buru didn't really have much reason to argue. She barked and ran, letting electric sparks fly from her mouth as she pounced on the final bird and chomp with a powerful shock.

...did he read that prompt right? They had to go back in??
Just as Buru cleared the final Pidgey, giving them the grand total of 50 (the UI even gave them a little Congratulations! You're halfway there! pop up, which felt sarcastic), the canopy floor rumbled like a mini earthquake before revealing a hole was supposed to be a "chute". Peering down, there were more carved stairs that led someplace...wherever it was. And also, there were Pidgeotto in there. And nests made of twigs. Why were they Pidgeotto instead of Pidgey? Did the tower level up?
He had to withdraw Buru for the next prompt and call down his other Pokemon to follow him into the tree's depths. He wasn't sure if his only Hoenn Pokemon could handle a larger bird, but with the logic of the Tower, they still only had one HP, right? ❝Come out, Hie.❞
Well, he didn't have to send the pup to them, he just had to do something. ❝Announce our presence for us, would you?❞
The Poochyena barked before hopping down the steps and letting out a loud Roar, bouncing and echoing on the walls of the tree trunk and startling the Pidgeottos, whipping them into a frenzy. The lime green worm was barely noticed, but Arthur saw it, a trick of the light? A figment of a previous memory? Only one way to find out.

Actually Arthur lost track of which Pokemon he had out. He decided to withdraw all of his Pokemon since none of them could hit the current target anyway just for a refresher, and then pulled out his Cottonee to hit the prompt that only she could do. It was lucky that even if it was a grass type move, the Pidgeottos did look like they followed the rule of the Tower, and so fainted as soon as a wisp of HP was snuffed out of them. Unfortunately, that didn't make them great targets for Mega Drain. The Cottonee looked like she was expending more energy using the attack compared to gaining anything from it.
<So for how long are we doing this again?>
❝We're more than halfway. I can say that at least.❞ Arthur responded as he moved down the steps. He couldn't go too quickly since nests and birds were often taking up residence on some of the steps, but in moments when there was a clear path, he would step down a little recklessly, and almost slipped on one of the branches before putting one of his hands on the wall to stabilize himself. He chided himself, thinking that there was no use to this if he slipped and died in-game. Slow and steady won the race, after all, if this was between a turtle and a hare.

❝Sorry, Gou, looks like the dice rolls like you.❞
The Monferno shook his head as he was brought out on the steps. The rest in the Poke Ball was too short, and now inside the stinky walls of the tree, he was a little more irritable. <Let's just keep knocking these guys out.> he muttered before getting a better look at the birds. <Wait are they bigger now?>
❝Yeahhh...❞ well, he explained quickly that it didn't matter, they would still faint after a single hit, but they did look more menacing - their shrill calls louder and deeper; their talons bigger as well as their beaks, and their wingspans more imposing, casting larger shadows.
Well, there was no point in expending more energy than necessary. As one Pidgeotto approached Gou, he made his eyes glow red, glaring intensely at the wild Pokemon, before said bird was covered in a red aura and let out a fearful squawk and ran off.
❝Oh hey, that's new.❞
<No, I just never felt like I could pull it off before.>

❝Hie, come back for now.❞ he returned the pup back into his Poke Ball once he got within range - he was wandering a little too far down the steps, but anyway, he needed to switch out someone again for the next prompt. Curious about how this was going to go, he let out Kanya, who at first took the shape of his original form before suddenly growing into that wispy final evolution; a visual sign that it was temporary, but it excited the cat all the same, happy to feel himself in what he could be.
<OHOHOHO!> he laughed a villainess' laugh (perhaps somewhere another player would be proud or mocking), <It doesn't matter if the birds get bigger so long as I have my beautiful tricks!>
The cat snapped his fingers and let the flower ball disappear and reappear much deeper into the downward spiral of the stairs, shocking some birds as it exploded and and made the steps under Arthur vibrate ever so slightly. Gou wondered if he was going to be that drunk on his final evolution or if it was just a Kanya thing. Arthur just hoped that the attack actually hit a bird somewhere, but the counter did go up, so it was successful?

Shit, the next prompt called for a rock type move, but the only one that he knew for that was Stura, and he was too big for this hollowed out trunk of steps. Flicking through his box, he was surprised to see that Anta's profile was not grayed out, for it turned out that she did have a move that was apparently classified as a rock type. Well, that worked for him - it would at least give them less of a chance of collapsing the steps from the rock snake's weight and size.
He withdrew the Cottonee for now to bring out the Mantyke once more, and this time commanded her to use Wide Guard. As if responding to make sure the protection was not used without reason, the Pidgeotto assailed them with gusts of wind. Thankfully the quickly set up shield was enough to divert the winds with some push back, but the updraft was strong.

And now he needed a ground type attack. Once again, Stura was a more obvious choice, but he was trying to avoid bringing the house down--wait, he had the little donkey now, didn't he? He almost forgot that it was a ground type! He had to switch Gou out this time to let out Banko (who was not properly introduced the first time he was brought out). He did a full body shake, down to his tail, when he was let out of the Poke Ball, letting out a short neigh before waiting to be told what to do. The trainer pointed at one of the approaching Pidgeotto and told him to use Mud-Slap, and the donkey did not question type differences (not knowing about that), so he kicked up some mud that came out of nowhere and managed to land it squarely on the eyes.
<Bullseye! Take that, birdbrains!>

Ah shit, this was another new one. Binding or trapping moves? He actually didn't understand what those were at first until he had to pull up his list of Pokemon and figure out why Gou was the only one that had one (he was panicking for perhaps half a minute, thinking he had to catch another Pokemon) - that was until he saw the highlighted move. Ohh, okay, it made sense to him now, but this was a very specific type of move.
So he withdrew Anta and let the Monferno out of the Poke Ball. <That rest was short-lived.>
❝Sorry, sorry, this one's all yours.❞
The fire type figured that they were not going to catch a break until his trainer was tired of the climb for the day, so for now it was going to be another assault. This time around, he let out the new move for a test once again, shooting a Fire Spin at one of the Pidgeottos and trapping it in its vortex.

A new prompt, but much easier to complete compared to the previous one. Flinching was something that many more moves did and were also more widespread; one of which was standing right in front of him, stifling a yawn. When Arthur asked him if he was willing to Bite one of the birds, Kanya said no, that was more of the pups' thing, wasn't it? (referring to Hie and Buru). But the cat was already out of his Poke Ball so it would make things a lot faster, please? The Meowscarada rolled his eyes before he relented. Fine, just one bite.
The cat tried to pick the least stinkiest bird out of the lot, if that was possible, and decided to go for one of the lower Pidgeottos that was perched on one of the steps, preening itself. Without warning, the bird was grabbed by paws, and it squawked in surprise and protest before getting a bite on the neck, like a true reenactment of prey and predator. It was kind of like watching a nature documentary until the Meowscarada immediately stopped biting and proceeded to spit to get the taste out. <Blegh...>

<Oh, boss!> the Mudbray hopped up the steps, clearly enjoying this little romp. <Anythin' else I can do? I know I'm new 'n' all, but I can pull m'own weight!>
Well, at least someone was energetic. The next prompt went up and it was a very broad one, so in fact, there was one move that the donkey could do to satisfy it (though it wasn't an offensive move by any means). ❝Uhh, can you show me how you do Iron Defense?❞
<Sure! One Iron Defense, comin' right up!> Banko's body was then surrounded by a light blue glow, and as one of the Pidgeotto, who noticed the move's activation, flew up to meet him head on, the donkey was able to stop the physical attack without even flinching. Whether it was a wing or a tackle, he was able to push back and then yelled a battle cry in response.
